Chiefs quarterback Chase Daniel earns win in start

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(5:56 pm ET) Replacing an injured Alex Smith, Chiefs quarterback Chase Daniel was able to do just enough to help lead the Chiefs to a 19-7 victory over the Chargers Sunday.

Daniels completed 16 of his 27 pass attempts for 157 yards. While Daniel did not throw a touchdown, he also avoided throwing an interception.

Chiefs' Alex Smith will sit out finale with lacerated spleen

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/26/14) Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith has been diagnosed with a lacerated spleen, an injury that will keep him sidelined for his team's pivotal Week 17 divisional showdown against the Chargers, trainer Rick Burkholde told reporters, per ESPN.

Smith sustained the injury after taking a brutal hit to the abdomen against the Steelers in Week 16. He noticed the discomfort following the game, but did not believe it to be serious.

Smith will not need surgery, although his injury will require a six-week timetable which will virtually keep him out for the remainder of the season, if Kansas City advances to the playoffs. The Chiefs will need to win against the Chargers and have the Ravens and Texans lose in order to clinch a spot in the postseason.

Smith signed a five-year, $76 million contract before the start of the season. In 15 games, Smith passed for 3,265 yards with 18 touchdowns and six interceptions. For the second straight season, Chase Daniel will make a start in Week 17. Daniels completed 21 of 30 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown in a last-minute overtime loss to the Chargers in 2013, which clinched San Diego a playoff spot.

Kansas City opened as a 3-point home favorite. The line moved to 3 1/2 points, as of Friday before Vegas slashed the line due to the news of Smith's injury.

Chiefs draft Aaron Murray

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/10/14) With pick No. 163 in the NFL Draft, the Chiefs selected quarterback Aaron Murray from Georgia. Murray is expected to challenge Chase Daniel and Tyler Bray to be the No. 2 quarterback behind starter Alex Smith.

Murray will likely sit for at least a year since Smith is entering the final season of his contract, although don't be suprised if Smith still gets a contract extension in Kansas City. Either way, don't expect Murray to start any time soon barring injury.

Murray finished his career at Georgia by passing for 3,075 yards, 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 11 starts in 2013 before suffering a torn ACL in his left knee against Kentucky. He is the only quarterback in SEC history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in all four seasons and is the conference's career record holder in touchdowns (121) and passing yards (13,166).

His status for the start of training camp is questionable with his knee.

Chase Daniel effective in first career start

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12/29/13) Chiefs quarterback Chase Daniel got the start in San Diego with Alex Smith resting, and the fourth-year backup played well. Daniel completed 21 of 30 throws for 200 yards and a touchdown and scrambled seven times for 59 yards. He did not commit a turnover.

Daniel hit receiver Dexter McCluster for a 2-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Daniel spread the ball to seven different receivers and led his team into range for the game-winning field goal. Alas, Ryan Succop missed the 41-yarder.

Daniel will go back to backing up Smith in Saturday's wild card game at Indianapolis.

Chase Daniel expected to make first career start

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12/29/13) With the Chiefs resting Alex Smith, quarterback Chase Daniel is expected to make his first career start at San Diego. Daniel has thrown 17 passes in his four-year career.
