Coffee files retirement papers
(8/16/10) According to multiple reports, 49ers RB Glen Coffee has filed retirement papers Monday with the league office, so there's no going back for him now. Coffee told The Sacramento Bee that his immediate plans are to go back to the University of Alabama to get his degree and then a Master's degree.
Coffee gives reasons for quitting
(8/14/10) Now that he's made the decision to quit the game, RB Glen Coffee told The Sacramento Bee that his immediate plans are to go back to the University of Alabama to get his degree and then a Master's degree. Coffee told The Bee why he couldn’t reconcile football with his faith. "His will, I felt, wasn't football,” Coffee said. “I felt like I forced football because everyone expected me to. He told me a long time ago to walk away."
Coffee says he's quitting Niners
(8/13/10) Shocking news out of Santa Clara on Friday. Out of the blue, backup RB Glen Coffee, the second-year man out of Alabama, released a statement that he's quitting football. Earlier this week coach Mike Singletary mentioned Coffee would be one of his main ball carriers in San Francisco's exhibition opener in Indianapolis. "This has been a tough decision for me to make, but at this time in my life I feel it is best for me that I move on from football." Singletary said he did not see this coming. "I respect his honesty and respect him for not going through the motions," Singletary said. "All I asked him was, 'Are you sure? Have you really thought about this?' He said, 'Yes, I have. I thought about it for a long time.'"
Coffee, Dixon in competition
(8/11/10) 49ers coach Mike Singletary said Wednesday that RB Frank Gore won't play much, if at all, Sunday at Indianapolis in the preseason opener, and that the bulk of the carries would be going to RB Glen Coffee and rookie RB Anthony Dixon. Singletary likened Dixon to "a bull in a china cabinet."
Singletary wants more from Coffee
(8/4/10) 49ers coach Mike Singletary would like to see more from backup running backs Glen Coffee and Anthony Dixon. Both are competing to be the No. 2 RB behind starter Frank Gore. "Glen has to work and keep his head up so he can see what's going on around him," Singletary said Wednesday. "Dixon is a big guy who runs like a small guy." Even though Gore is the starter, Singletary did say all three rushers could see playing time each week. "The third guy has to be more of a special teams guy," Singletary said. "Then we have to convince Frank to not want the ball every play."
