Packers 'still open' to bringing Jermichael Finley back
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/25/14) Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Friday that he's "still open" to Jermichael Finley coming back to the team. Speaking with the media, McCarthy said he still considers him a Packer and wouldn't put a deadline on bringing himback. He also hasn't consulted with the doctors on whether or not Finley is healthy enough to play after suffering a major neck injury last season.
TE still open for Packers
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/17/14) The Packers are trying to figure out their tight end situation heading into training camp, reports ESPN.

The longer Jermichael Finley (neck) remains unsigned, the more likely it appears his time in Green Bay -- and perhaps in the NFL -- is over, despite his desire to continue to play.

The Packers re-signed Andrew Quarless to a two-year, $3 million contract in March, but that's hardly starter's money. The door is open for rookie third-round draft pick Richard Rodgers, who performed well enough during the organized team activities and minicamp practices (which Quarless missed because of injury) to move into the starting spot. Rodgers has the kind of dynamic athletic ability that Finley brought to the position.

The wild card there is Colt Lyerla, the undrafted but talented rookie from Oregon. Had Lyerla not left the Ducks' program and run into trouble subsequently last year, he might have been a high draft pick. The Packers also will have to assess whether Brandon Bostick can make a bigger impact than he did last season.

Jermichael Finley set for barrage of tests Wednesday
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/15/14) Free agent tight end Jermichael Finley will undergo an MRI, a CAT scan and other tests Wednesday, then send the results around the league in hopes of landing a job before training camp, reports USA Today. Finley underwent spinal fusion surgery last November.

He's been working out and catching passes. The Packers are still the frontrunners if Finley returns, the paper said, but he's also drawn interest from the Steelers and other teams.

The Steelers' neurosurgeon, Dr. Joseph Maroon, performed Finley's surgery in November and cleared him in May, the paper said. Finley said Maroon assured him the chances are "99.9 percent that if I get back on the field, I'll be more protected and in better shape than I was before my injury."

Finley indicated he's gotten some contract offers, but not for the money he's seeking.

Jermichael Finley still hoping to return to Packers
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/9/14) Free agent tight end Jermichael Finley told ESPN.com he's working as hard as he can to return to the Packers. While Finley said this is the best he's felt "during this entire crazy process," he has yet to be cleared by team doctors.

Finley underwent neck fusion surgery last fall.

Rodgers rooting for Jermichael Finley
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/17/14) Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is rooting for tight end Jermichael Finley to make a comeback from his neck injury, reports ESPN.

"I would want to play until they told me I couldn't play anymore," Rodgers said. "He's younger than I am, and we're competitors. We have to be in our arena doing what we love to do, so it would be near impossible to keep me off the field. I'm sure he feels the same."

Rodgers said he has been in semi-regular contact with Finley throughout his recovery from neck fusion surgery. He said he does not know what doctors have told Finley, but he knows his former teammate wants to keep playing. Finley, who is a free agent, still has his nameplate above his locker at Lambeau Field.

"I've talked to him about him and his psyche," Rodgers said. "I haven't talked to him about his specific injury."

Finley met with the Packers' doctors late last month in Green Bay but has not yet received medical clearance from the team to continue his playing career.
