(9/30/2014) The Lions might need to promote running back George Winn from the practice squad or sign a free agent because they currently have two healthy running backs, Reggie Bush and fullback Jed Collins, reports the Detroit Free Press. Joique Bell is recovering from a concussion, while Theo Riddick and Montell Owens are dealing with pulled hamstrings.

All three were knocked out of Sunday's win over the Jets. Lions coach Jim Caldwell has not provided any updates on the injured trio. Detroit hosts Buffalo in Week 5.

Hamstring injury knocks Montell Owens, Theo Riddick out of Week 4

(9/28/2014) Lions running backs Montell Owens and Theo Riddick were both forced out of Sunday's game against the Jets due to hamstring injuries, per ESPN.

Owens, who had been nursing a hamstring injury as of late, was on the sideline in street clothes in the second half. Riddick also re-aggravated the injury in the first half. He had one carry for two yards before leaving the game.

The Lions will host the Bills in Week 5.

(9/26/2014) The questionable tag for premier wide receiver Calvin Johnson (ankle) highlights a lengthy injury report issued Friday by the Lions.

Those ruled out are tight end Joseph Fauria (ankle), linebacker Travis Lewis (quad) and cornerback Cassius Vaughn (ankle). Safety Don Carey (hamstring) and tackle LaAdrian Waddle (calf) are doubtful.

Fullback Montell Owens (hamstring) is the lone questionable. The probables are defensive ends Ezekiel Ansah (knee) and George Johnson (groin), running backs Joique Bell (knee) and Theo Riddick (hamstring), defensive tackle Nick Fairley (biceps) and safety James Ihedigbo (neck).

(9/21/2014) The Lions have listed QB Kellen Moore, CB Cassius Vaughn, S James Ihedigbo, FB Montell Owens, LB Travis Lewis, T LaAdrian Waddle and WR Ryan Broyles as inactive Week 3 against the Packers. 

Lewis and Vaughn had already been ruled out prior to gametime. Ihedigbo and Owens entered the game considered doubtful.

Owens was taken back to the locker and was evaluated for a head injury. The team has not revealed the extent of the injury, though he was unable to return.

Lions might keep two fullbacks

(3/30/2014) Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said the team might keep both fullbacks currently on the roster: Jed Collins and Montell Owens

"Montell can play fullback, but Montell is sort of a tweener halfback/fullback guy," Mayhew told MLive.com. "Obviously Jed, he's a hammering fullback. I've seen him play fullback on some run downs and short-yardage situations, he can play some special teams for you in some other situations. So they're really two different types of players.

"There's a way where you keep both of them, so we'll see how it all plays out."

(11/17/2013) The Lions have made RB Montell Owens, DE Ziggy Ansah, CB Bill Bentley, T Corey Hilliard, WR Nate Burleson, QB Kellen Moore and G Leroy Harris inactive Week 11 against the Steelers.

Owens was ruled out Friday due to a knee injury. Both Bentley and Burleson were doubtful. Ansah attempted to get his ankle going during pre-game, but it was determined he should sit against Pittsburgh.

Owens has been on short-term injured reserve, so he can't officially be activated until the team's Week 9 bye. However, he can return to practice.

"He’s been doing a lot with the trainers," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said, per the Detroit Free Press. "He’s worked really hard to come back. He’s going to make a good contribution to our team. Hopefully, it’s sooner rather than later, but a lot of that will depend on how he looks in those two weeks of practice."

“Montell can do a lot of different things for a team,” coach Jim Schwartz told ESPN.com. “He can play special teams. He can run the ball, he can block, he can pass protect and is a very good leader in the locker room.

(8/31/2013) The Lions will place special teams player Montell Owens on injured reserve with a designation to return, the Detroit Free Press reports Saturday. Owens suffered a knee injury in the third preseason game against New England.

Owens remains on the 53-man roster for now, because the Lions cannot place him on short-term IR until 4 p.m. Tuesday. Owens will not be able to return for at least six weeks.
