Kicker Matt Prater would like to re-sign with the Lions

(1/8/2015) Kicker Matt Prater said he would like to return to the Lions' roster in 2015. He converted 21 of 26 field goals in 11 games after signing with Detroit in October.

"Yeah, I definitely want to come back here and I've talked with my agent and told people in the building that I want to come back," Prater said Monday, per The Detroit News. "I feel loyalty here because they gave me an opportunity and I had a lot of fun being here."

Prater was signed to a one-year deal after being cut by the Broncos on Oct. 3.

"I had other teams interested, too, but I really wanted to come here because I saw a great team," Prater said. "Coach (Jim) Caldwell and (special teams coach John Bonamego) and everyone, I wanted to come here to work with them. They put a lot of trust in me, so I didn't want to let them down. Now, I feel like I owe them, and so I want to stay here as long as I can."

(1/4/2015) Lions kicker Matt Prater made both his field-goal attempts in his team's 24-20 Wild Card loss to the Cowboys Sunday.

While the Lions had to deal with shakiness at the kicker position this season, cycling through three different kickers, Prater made both his kicks in the loss Sunday, with both field goals coming from within 40 yards. He also added two extra points for a total of eight points in the game.

(12/28/2014) Lions kicker Matt Prater had two extra points in Detroit's 30-20 loss to the Packers Sunday.

Prater was held without a field goal attempt for the first time since joining the Lions. He finishes the regular season a perfect 19 for 19 on extra points and 21 for 26 on field goals.

He and the Lions will head to Dallas for the wild card round of the NFC playoffs next week.

Prater hit field goals from 23 and 46 yards. He is now 16 for 20 on field goals since being signed by the Lions.

(11/27/2014) Lions kicker Matt Prater finished with 10 points during a 34-17 win Week 13 vs. Chicago. Prater made field goals of 40 and 46 yards, while converting four extra points.

Prater has totaled 10 points twice in seven games and is averaging 6.3 points per game. The Lions are back in action Week 14 vs. Tampa Bay.

Prater converted a 26-yard kick in the opening quarter. He had his second attempt blocked, but bounced back with a 50-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to tie the game with 12:02 remaining. He converted 2 of 3 field foal attempts and added two extra points in a 20-16 victory. He has knocked down 5 of his last 6 field goal attempts in the past two games.

(10/26/2014) Lions kicker Matt Prater drilled a game-winning 48-yard field goal as time expired to give his team a 22-21 Week 8 victory over the Falcons in London.

Prater's first attempt went wide right, but he was saved by a delay of game penalty that pushed his kick back 5 yards. He added a 22-yard field goal in the third quarter and a 20-yard shot in the fourth. He finished 3 for 3 in field goal attempts with one extra point, totaling 10 points in the win. He is 5 for 7 on the season.

(10/13/2014) New Lions kicker Matt Prater contributed to the team's kicking woes Sunday against the Vikings, missing 2 of 3 field goals during a 17-3 win. The Lions, who already cut kickers Nate Freese and Alex Henery, have made just 5 of 15 field-goal attempts this season.

However, despite Prater's struggles Sunday, Lions coach Jim Caldwell doesn't appear to be searching for another kicker just yet, per the Detroit Free Press.

"I think (with) wind like we had today, you're going to have an issue," Caldwell said. "He kicked a 52-yarder, which was great. We have all the confidence in the world in him. I mean, the guy's got a great track record. We feel good about him."

(10/12/2014) Lions kicker Matt Prater didn't help the team's kicking woes much Week 6.

Prater made just one of his three attempts during the contest. To start the second quarter, Prater missed from 50 yards out. He would redeem himself from 52 yards out later in the quarter. Prater had one more opportunity, but couldn't hit from 44 yards out. He made his only two extra point attempts. Prater will take on the Saints Week 6.

(10/7/2014) The Lions will sign kicker Matt Prater to a one-year deal, ESPN reports. The Lions confirmed the agreement Tuesday night, according to the Associated Press.

Prater won a kicking competition with Jay Feely after the Lions waived Alex Henery Monday. He has made 81.6 percent of his field-goal attempts during his eight-year career, including 25 of 26 attempts last season. While he spent half his time kicking in the friendly environment of Denver, he has made 80 percent of his field-goal attempts on the road in his career.

(10/7/2014) The Lions are expected to sign free-agent kicker Matt Prater, ESPN reports.

The Lions waived kicker Alex Henery Monday after he missed all three of his field-goal attempts in Week 5. Prater and Jay Feely were brought in for a tryout, and it appears the team is set to go with the former Broncos kicker.

(10/6/2014) Former Broncos kicker Matt Prater and former Cardinals kicker Jay Feely are scheduled to work out for the Lions Tuesday, according to ESPN. The Lions announced Monday they released kicker Alex Henery, who missed three field goals in a loss to the Bills Sunday.

Former Bucs kicker Connor Barth is also expected to be at Tuesday's workout, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The move would save the team $2.294 million in cap space.

Prater is coming off a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. He had been one of the most prolific placekickers in the sport. He is 21 for 27 lifetime on boots of 50 yards or longer.

(8/24/2014) Broncos kicker Matt Prater, the league's second-leading scorer last year, has been notified he'll be suspended for the first four regular-season games for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Prater has been in the league's alcohol program since he was charged with DUI in 2011. His attorney, Harvey Steinberg, told the Denver Post that Prater got suspended for drinking a few beers at home. "[Matt] feels terribly for his teammates," Steinberg said. "It's cost him personally, both professionally and financially."

Prater nailed 25 of 26 field-goal attempts last year, including a record-breaking 64-yarder against Tennessee. Rookie Mitch Ewald is his backup.

(1/26/2014) Broncos kicker Matt Prater contracted a virus that caused him to miss three straight practices last week, but he is flying with the team to New Jersey and will play in the Super Bowl, reports the Denver Post.

The paper notes that the last time Prater visited MetLife Stadium, in Week 2, he had five of his eight kickoffs returned by the Giants. That was highly unusual for Prater, who led the league with 81 touchbacks. Denver's kickoff coverage unit has not had to make a tackle since Dec. 29 at Oakland.
