Jeff Tuel pushing Thad Lewis for No. 2 QB job

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/22/2014) Quarterback Thad Lewis is not guaranteed to be EJ Manuel's backup. Lewis and Jeff Tuel split time with the second team Tuesday.

"We have a battle for the second-team quarterback," coach Doug Marrone said. "We're trying to find out who it is. Jeff did a nice job in OTAs and he's earned himself some more reps."

Thad Lewis emerges in second half against Patriots

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12/29/2013) Bills quarterback Thad Lewis is no Pro Bowler, but he is at least consistent. He has passed for between 197 and 247 yards in each of his five starts this season. He hit the high end of those totals Sunday at New England.

Lewis appeared unlikely to approach that number after passing just eight times in the first half, completing three for 62 yards. But he came on strong after intermission, hitting T.J. Graham on a 41-yard pass and 12-yard touchdown off a run fake in the third quarter.

He finished 16 of 29 for the 247 yards and score.

Thad Lewis in, EJ Manuel out for Sunday game

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12/29/2013) What was expected is now official. Thad Lewis will start the Week 17 game for the Bills at quarterback. He had been deemed probable with a shoulder ailment. Starter EJ Manuel, who was doubtful, has been ruled out for the clash at New England with a knee injury.

Handful of Bills probable for Week 17 battle

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12/27/2013) The Bills have deemed five players as probable for Sunday at New England, including quarterback Thad Lewis (shoulder), who has replaced doubtful EJ Manuel (knee) as the starter, and running back Fred Jackson (ribs).

The others are wideouts Marcus Easley and Marquise Goodwin with knee injuries and defensive tackle Kyle Williams (Achilles).

EJ Manuel to sit, Thad Lewis to start against Patriots

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12/27/2013) A knee injury had ended the year for Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel. He will sit in favor of Thad Lewis on Sunday against New England. Doug Marrone made that pronouncement a week after exclaiming that Manuel would definitely start in the season finale.

Manuel finishes with 180 completions in 306 passing attempts (58.8 percent) for 1,972 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. His knee problem will have cost him six games.

Bills quarterback situation for Sunday still muddled

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12/27/2013) Bills starting quarterback EJ Manuel (knee) participated in the media availability portion of Friday practice, but backup Thad Lewis was taking more reps, the Buffalo News has reported. The team has yet to announce who will play Sunday at New England.

Bills vague about Week 17 starting quarterback

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12/24/2013) Bills coach Doug Marrone said he wants to see how rookie EJ Manuel's knee responds to Tuesday's practice before deciding on a starting quarterback for Week 17 at New England, reports the Buffalo News. Marrone did say Manuel threw the ball well.

If Manuel isn't ready, Thad Lewis would make his second straight start and fifth overall.

Bills don't ask for much from Thad Lewis

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12/22/2013) The Bills didn't need Thad Lewis to do much in Week 16, but he did enough to beat the Dolphins for the second time, 19-0.

Lewis completed 15 of 25 passes for 193 yards in the game, and was held out of the end zone for the second time against Miami. He tossed one interception and finished with 13 rushing yards on eight carries.

Lewis has appeared in five games this season, starting four of them. He enters Week 17 against the Patriots with 845 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. It is not clear if Lewis will start the final game of the season, with EJ Manuel still dealing with a knee injury.

Only use Thad Lewis in case of emergency

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12/19/2013) With EJ Manuel sidelined by a injury, the Bills will once again turn to Thad Lewis to start in Week 16 against the Dolphins. He will be facing the Dolphins for the second time this season in his fourth start, and will be looking for a repeat of a Week 7 win.

Lewis wasn't particularly strong in that game against the Dolphins, as he finished without a touchdown, the only time he hasn't scored as a starting quarterback this season. He finished the game with 202 yards through the air and 13 on the ground, while throwing one interception.

Lewis looked better than expected as a starter, but Lewis hardly put up strong enough numbers for Fantasy owners looking for a boost at this point in the season. Against a Dolphins defense that has allowed the sixth-fewest Fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks (15.9), Lewis is little more than a desperation play for this Sunday.

Thad Lewis makes his return in reserve role

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11/10/2013) Bills quarterback Thad Lewis (rib) is active and in uniform as he returns to a backup role in Week 10 against the Steelers Sunday. Lewis will take a seat on the bench with EJ Manuel also returning from an injury.

Four probables dominate Bills injury list

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11/8/2013) The Bills are in fairly good health heading into their Sunday game in Pittsburgh. Four players have been listed as probable. They are quarterbacks E.J. Manuel (knee) and Thad Lewis (ribs), defensive tackle Kyle Williams (Achilles) and wideout Marquise Goodwin (hamstring).

All were full practice participants on Friday.

Thad Lewis practicing in full, likely to return to backup role

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11/8/2013) Bills quarterback Thad Lewis has been able to practice in full after missing last week's game with a rib injury, but that doesn't mean he is set to return to the starting lineup in Week 10 against the Steelers. With EJ Manuel expected to return from a knee injury, Lewis will likely take on a backup role for the Bills.

Thad Lewis expected to practice this week

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/4/2013) Bills coach Doug Marrone said quarterback Thad Lewis (ribs), who sat out Week 9, threw passes Monday and is expected to return to practice this week. Lewis could start Week 10 at Pittsburgh, if EJ Manuel (knee) isn't ready to return.

Bills QB situation unsettled heading into Week 10

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/4/2013) With Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel close to returning from a knee injury, quarterback Jeff Tuel sounded uncertain Monday if he would make another start Week 10 at Pittsburgh. Tuel started Sunday's 23-13 loss vs. Kansas City, completing 18 of 39 passes for 229 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

"I'm not sure," Tuel said of his starting status for Week 10, per ESPN.

Wide receiver Steve Johnson seems to think Manuel will ready to return next week. Tuel started Sunday in place of Thad Lewis, who was out with a rib injury.

"(Manuel) said he'll be ready on Sunday. After that there's no excuses," Johnson said.

Thad Lewis sits out with injury to ribs

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/3/2013) Bills quarterback Thad Lewis (ribs) was ruled inactive for Week 9 vs. Kansas City. Jeff Tuel drew the start in place of Lewis, who was listed as doubtful after practicing in a limited capacity Friday.

Thad Lewis unlikely to play Week 9

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/2/2013) Bills quarterback Thad Lewis is unlikely to play Sunday against the Bills in Week 9. The Bills have named Jeff Tuel the starting quarterback and Matt Flynn as the No. 2 quarterback, according to CBSSports.com NFL Insider Jason la Canfora Saturday.

Lewis was originally listed as doubtful on Friday's injury report due to a rib injury. Tuel will make his first career start.

Thad Lewis doubtful for game against Chiefs

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11/1/2013) Thad Lewis had been deemed a 50/50 possibility to play for the Bills Sunday against Kansas City, but the percentage has dropped considerably against his availability. Doug Marrone has placed his status as doubtful for the game with a rib injury.

Lewis returned to practice on Friday, but didn't throw the ball during the open media period of the session. His streak of three straight starts has almost certainly come to an end.

Bills down to two possible, one unlikely starter at QB for Sunday

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11/1/2013) It appears that the battle for the Bills starting quarterback job Sunday against Kansas City is down to two. Doug Marrone officially ruled out E.J. Manuel (knee) and proclaimed Thad Lewis (ribs) doubtful on Friday.

That leaves Jeff Tuel and Matt Flynn as the most likely starters. They have shared first-team reps in practice throughout the week.

Thad Lewis back on practice field, but not throwing

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11/1/2013) It seemed that the Bills muddled quarterback situation received a bit of clarity on Friday when Thad Lewis (ribs) returned to practice. But Lewis was not throwing passes during the media availability portion of the session, which leads to speculation that Jeff Tuel or Matt Flynn will start Sunday against Kansas City. They shared first-team reps Wednesday and Thursday.

Lewis started the last three games in relief of E.J. Manuel, who remains out with a knee injury despite his limited practice participation this week. Lewis has enjoyed some success. He has completed 62 of 103 passes for 652 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Bills to make quarterback decision Friday

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(11/1/2013) The Bills will decide on a starting quarterback for Week 9 Friday.

The team has to decide between Thad Lewis, Jeff Tuel and Matt Flynn against the Chiefs. Lewis is dealing with back and rib injuries, and will be evaluated Friday. If he's able to go, he'll start. Otherwise, the team will have to turn to either Tuel or Flynn. Head coach Doug Marrone added that he'll go with the player who gives the team the best chance to win.

Thad Lewis still has shot to play against Chiefs

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/31/2013) Despite his absence from practice the last two days, Bills quarterback Thad Lewis has a 50-50 chance of being active for the game Sunday against Kansas City.

Doug Marrone said Thursday that he has yet to decide if Lewis (ribs, flu) will make his third straight start in place of the injured E.J. Manuel.

Thad Lewis still getting red light for practice

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/31/2013) Bills quarterback Thad Lewis might be the least likely starter among those available for Week 9 against Kansas City after being sidelined again Thursday in practice with a rib injury. Lewis has started the last three games, but was not seen during the media availability portion of the session, per ESPN.

Jeff Tuel and Matt Flynn split first-team reps Wednesday. Rookie starter E.J. Manuel returned on a limited basis after missing three weeks with a knee injury, but will not play Sunday.

'It could be anyone' starting at QB for Buffalo Week 9

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/30/2013) Do you want to know who will start at quarterback for the Bills Week 9 vs. Kansas City? Well, apparently the Bills want to know that answer as well.

Bills quarterback Jeff Tuel delivered a surprising message when talking to reporters Wednesday after splitting the first-team reps at practice with Matt Flynn since Thad Lewis was sidelined by a rib injury.

"Coach Marrone walked in to the room and said, 'It could be anyone," Tuel said about the quarterback situation for Week 9.

Lewis has been the starter the last three games with EJ Manuel sidelined by a knee injury. Manuel practiced on a limited basis with the second-team offense Wednesday and appears inching closer to a return as well.

Thad Lewis a no-go for Wednesday practice

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/30/2013) Bruised ribs prevented Bills quarterback Thad Lewis from practicing on Wednesday. Jeff Tuel was taking the first-team reps, per WGR.

Lewis played throughout Sunday against New Orleans with the ailment, but struggled with three fumbles and an interception.

Starter E.J. Manuel remains sidelined with a knee injury, but has ramped up his recovery and could be close to returning.

Thad Lewis struggles to play catch-up

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/27/2013) With the Saints able to sell out for the pass leading by multiple scores, Bills quarterback Thad Lewis couldn't get anything going in the second half Week 8 at New Orleans, completing just 12 of 22 passes. He threw an interception on the Bills' second-to-last drive and nearly threw another on their final drive as he struggled to stay upright against a pass rush that sacked him four times on the day.

His overall numbers weren't bad. He completed 22 of 39 passes for 234 yards and a touchdown, hooking up with wide receiver Steve Johnson for a 13-yard score in the second quarter, but the interception wasn't his only turnover. He also lost two fumbles, including one on the first play of the game.

Lewis has thrown for at least 200 yards in each of his three starts this season. With E.J. Manuel still sidelined by a sprained knee, Lewis figures to start again Week 9 against the Chiefs.
