Vikings' QB race taking shape

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/30/2014) Vikings quarterbacks Matt Cassel and Teddy Bridgewater are likely to get the bulk of the snaps moving forward, reports ESPN.com. That means Christian Ponder will get fewer reps.

"You can't work three [quarterbacks] for a long time, so the reps will get divided up differently," Turner said.

Turner added preseason games will factor "heavily" into the team's decision on a starter.

Christian Ponder 'eliminating' negative plays

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/8/2014) Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder isn't given much chance of beating out Matt Cassel or rookie Teddy Bridgewater, but coordinator Norv Turner said Ponder is making progress in the new offense.

"Christian Ponder, I know people like to beat up on him, but I've been impressed with Christian," Turner said, per the team's website. "With his physical ability and the way he's worked and the progress he's made. He's eliminating a lot of the negative plays."

Vikes won't name starting QB until well into training camp

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(6/17/2014) While most expect Matt Cassel to open the season as the Vikings' quarterback, coach Mike Zimmer told USA Today he won't name a starter until well into training camp.

"I want to give everybody an opportunity and make sure that it's a legitimate opportunity for all of them," Zimmer said after the team opened its mandatory minicamp Tuesday. "Then we'll start narrowing down the reps as we get going. But it won't be for a while."

Cassel will have to fend off rookie Teddy Bridgewater and former first-rounder Christian Ponder.

Zimmer declares Vikings starting QB job open

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/17/2014) Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said he plans on giving all of his quarterbacks an opportunity to compete for the starting job in camp, suggesting that rookie Teddy Bridgewater could overtake veteran Matt Cassel for the gig.

"Everybody wants to rush into things," Zimmer said according to ESPN. "I want to give everybody an opportunity and make sure it's a legitimate opportunity for all of them. And we'll start narrowing down the reps as we get going."

Cassel had taken the majority of snaps through the early OTAs with Bridgewater behind him and Christian Ponder running third string. It was previously believed that Cassel would begin the year as the starter and eventually give way for Bridgewater.

Zimmer said he wouldn't name a starter "for a while."

Christian Ponder to share first-team reps

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5/25/2014) Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder will share first-team snaps with Matt Cassel and rookie Teddy Bridgewater in offseason practices, reports NFL.com. The move could be designed to enhance Ponder's trade value, as Minnesota is expected to start Cassel or Bridgewater, the report added.

Fantasy owners might have to wait for Teddy Bridgewater

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/9/2014) The Vikings have plans to not rush Teddy Bridgewater along in his progress and have no problems starting the season with Matt Cassel as their starting quarterback.

"There is no pressure on this kid to come in and play," GM Rick Spielman said. "We're very comfortable with Matt Cassel right now. We're very comfortable with Christian Ponder. He'll come in and compete and then the coaches will determine if he's even ready to play this year."

With playing time not promised to Bridgewater and a good but not great receiving corps waiting for him even if he does play, Fantasy owners shouldn't get too excited about his prospects this season. That can change of course if he does do well in training camp and unseats Cassel. Until then, he's only worth drafting with a middle- to late-round pick in dynasty/keeper leagues and a pick between fifth and 15th overall in rookie-only drafts.

Vikings GM: We won't trade Christian Ponder

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5/6/2014) Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said the team won't trade quarterback Christian Ponder. "That would leave us with one quarterback, I will not do that. We're going to need two quarterbacks -- three," Spielman told 1500ESPN.com.

Minnesota recently declined to exercise the 2015 option on Ponder, meaning he'll be a free agent after this season.

Vikes decline to pick up Christian Ponder's option

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5/4/2014) As expected, the Vikings declined to exercise the fifth-year option on quarterback Christian Ponder, which would have paid him $9.7 million in 2015. Ponder will be a free agent after this season.

Christian Ponder not sweating future, hopes to rebound

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/1/2014) If Christian Ponder sees the writing on the wall, he's not letting it get to him. The fourth-year quarterback knows he faces an uphill battle for playing time this summer but is coming into the season with a positive attitude.

Not only have the Vikings re-signed quarterback Matt Cassel but they have not discussed picking up Ponder's fifth-year option. It is not believed they will pick it up since it would cost them over $9 million.

"Honestly, I'm not thinking about it," Ponder told ESPN. "Plus, the option doesn't really mean much. They can cut me without anything after this year so it doesn't matter."

Vikings 'looking so hard' for a quarterback

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/24/2014) Christian Ponder's presence on the roster does not figure into the Vikings' quarterback plans. "We have to have a quarterback, so we are going to have to find some, and that is why we are out here looking so hard and why we'll continue to look in free agency," new coach Mike Zimmer said, per NFL.com. "We'll find a guy."

Minnesota could select a quarterback with the No. 8 overall pick. The Vikes also have met with Matt Cassel in an effort to re-sign the free agent.

Christian Ponder to stick with the Vikings, but ...

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(2/14/2014) Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said third-year quarterback Christian Ponder will remain with the team but also "sounded committed" to adding a young quarterback, ESPN reported. The Vikings aren't expected to re-sign quarterback Josh Freeman and fellow signal-caller Matt Cassel exercised an option to become a free agent.

Ponder hasn't lived up to the expectations of a typical first-round quarterback. In nine games last season Ponder accounted for 11 touchdowns and 13 turnovers and lost his starting spot to Cassel.

Might be wise for Vikes to keep Christian Ponder

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/11/2014) The Vikings don't view Christian Ponder as their quarterback of the future, but "even as inconsistent as he's been during his career, it might be wise for the Vikings to keep Ponder," reports the Minneapolis StarTribune. Ponder is the only quarterback on the roster now that Matt Cassel has opted out of his contract.

Minnesota wouldn't clear cap room by getting rid of Ponder. He's owed $3.2 million for 2014, but it's all dead money that will count against the cap regardless, the paper noted. If the Vikings don't bring back Cassel, who will have suitors in free agency, Ponder could serve as the temporary quarterback until the one Minnesota drafts is ready to play, the report said.

Norv Turner: 'We need a good young quarterback'

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/6/2014) New Vikings offensive coordinator said team brass is in agreement that "we need a good, young quarterback," reports KARE-TV. Turner, however, left the door open for Matt Cassel's return after Cassel opted out of his contract this week and called the team's quarterback situation "a process."

Christian Ponder is the only quarterback on the roster. Turner said he's been impressed with Ponder's ability to throw from outside the pocket but added Ponder must limit negative plays.

Report: Vikings expected to explore Christian Ponder trade

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/3/2014) Quarterback Christian Ponder is under contract for 2014, but "it seems likely the Vikings would try to get what they can for him in a trade," reports ESPN.com. The team's first-round pick in 2011 hasn't panned out.

In nine games last season, Ponder accounted for 11 touchdowns and 13 turnovers and lost his starting spot to Matt Cassel.

Christian Ponder cleared to return Week 15

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12/9/2013) Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said Monday quarterback Christian Ponder has been cleared to return after sitting out Sunday's game against the Ravens with a concussion. However, Frazier said he hasn't made a decision on who will start at quarterback Week 15 vs. Philadelphia.

Vikings list Week 14 inactives

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12/8/2013) Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder (concussion), cornerback Josh Robinson (chest), tight end Kyle Rudolph (foot), defensive tackle Chase Baker, guard Jeff Baca, wide receiver Rodney Smith and tackle Mike Remmers were among the team's inactives Week 14 at Baltimore.

Christian Ponder out Week 14

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(12/6/2013) Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder has been ruled out Week 14.

Ponder is still dealing with concussion-related symptoms. He was yet to pass the concussion test, and will not be able to practice until he passes the test.

Christian Ponder not cleared yet

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12/4/2013) Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said quarterback Christian Ponder has not passed the concussion protocol and that Matt Cassel likely will start Sunday at Baltimore, reports VikingUpdate.com. Josh Freeman will serve as the backup.

Vikings not ready to name Week 14 starting QB

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12/2/2013) Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said he's not ready to name a starting quarterback for Week 14 at Baltimore until Christian Ponder, who left Sunday's game with a concussion, is evaluated Monday and Tuesday. Matt Cassel came off the bench Week 13 to lead Minnesota to a 23-20 overtime win vs. Chicago after Ponder was injured late in the second quarter.

Josh Freeman is also on the roster, but he's been inactive for the last six games.

Christian Ponder suffers concussion Week 13

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12/1/2013) Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder had to leave Sunday's game vs. Chicago because of a concussion. He was injured late in the second quarter and was ruled out for the remainder of the game just after halftime.

Matt Cassel came on to replace Ponder, who was just 3 of 8 for 40 yards and no touchdowns. Ponder didn't get many chances to throw the ball before getting hurt as Minnesota primarily ran the football in the first half.

The Vikings are back in action Week 14 at Baltimore.

Continue to keep Christian Ponder out of active lineups

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/27/2013) Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder is coming off one of his better starts of the season Week 12 at Green Bay. Ponder finished with a quarterback rating over 100 for just the second time this season, with both of those outings coming in his last three starts.

Ponder will be looking to build off his strong run Week 13 vs. Chicago. Ponder didn't play well in a 31-30 loss Week 2 at Chicago, completing 16 of 30 passes for 227 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Quarterbacks haven't performed overly well against the Bears. They have averaged 16.4 Fantasy points per week, which is tied for the ninth-lowest average. Unfortunately, Chicago has held quarterbacks to less than 20 Fantasy points in four of the last six games. Quarterbacks have also totaled just 16 passing touchdowns to 14 interceptions in 11 games against Chicago.

Ponder has just one multi-passing touchdown game this season and hasn't been a trustworthy Fantasy option. He doesn't have a great matchup Week 13, so this is not the time to get brave and put Ponder into active Fantasy lineups.

Christian Ponder efficient in Week 12 tie

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/24/2013) Quarterback Christian Ponder and the Vikings allowed Green Bay to erase a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit Sunday, and the NFC North foes ended Week 12 in a 26-all tie in overtime. Ponder had a pretty efficient afternoon in the tie, completing 21 of 30 passes for 233 yards and one touchdown.

Ponder finished with a 103.9 quarterback rating, but he was sacked six times. Ponder's lone touchdown pass came on a 12-yard throw to Rhett Ellison in the third quarter, which gave Minnesota a 20-7 lead.

Ponder came close to playing the hero in overtime, but his 17-yard touchdown pass on 3rd-and-14 with 3:59 remaining was tipped by a Green Bay defender and went off the hands of Cordarrelle Patterson in the back of the end zone.

The Vikings are back in action Week 13 vs. Chicago.

Christian Ponder active for Week 12

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/24/2013) Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder (left shoulder) is active Week 12 at Green Bay. He was listed as probable after practicing in full all week.

Christian Ponder probable Week 12

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(11/22/2013) Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder is probable Week 12 against the Packers.

Ponder is dealing with a left shoulder injury, but was able to fully participate in practice. Ponder was able to play through the injury Week 11.

Week 12 not the time to turn to Christian Ponder

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/21/2013) Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder will be back under center Week 12 at Green Bay after being pulled during a 41-20 loss Week 11 at Seattle. Ponder has won just once in seven starts this season and goes for win No. 2 Sunday.

One of Ponder's losses this season came Week 8 vs. Green Bay. The Vikings posted 31 points, but Ponder was just 14 of 21 for 145 yards and no passing touchdowns. He did, however, have a rushing touchdown.

Through 10 games against the Packers, quarterbacks are averaging 264.4 passing yards and 21 Fantasy points per week, which is the ninth-highest average. Quarterbacks have totaled 19 touchdowns (18 passing) to seven turnovers (four interceptions) against Minnesota.

Ponder has thrown for multiple touchdowns just once this season and could be without Greg Jennings (Achilles) again Week 12. Fantasy owners haven't been relying much on Ponder in 2013, and it's still recommended you look toward other alternatives Week 12.
