Shields absent from OTAs

News: Packers cornerback Sam Shields was a no-show at OTAs on Tuesday according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Shields is a restricted free agent who hasn't signed his tender offer.
Analysis: Sounds like Shields is showing his displeasure of not receiving an extended contract. Last season Shields returned from a high-ankle sprain to land four interceptions and 11 passes defensed in his last six games. With playing time expected to go up in 2013, he should figure into draft plans with a late-round pick.

Shields takes pick back to the house

News: Packers defensive back Sam Shields came up big early on during Saturday's NFC Divisional Playoff game at San Francisco. Shields picked off a Colin Kaepernick pass and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown. He also registered four tackles and defended two passes in a 45-31 victory.
Analysis: Shields picked off three passes in the regular season and had just nine carrer interceptions prior to Saturday's game. Still, the 25-year-old only recorded 29 tackles this season, which was far less than his 45-tackle total the previous season. He is set to become a restricted free agent next season and should be ignored in all IDP formats come Draft Day next season.

Shields has well-rounded day

News: Packers defensive back Sam Shields recorded both a sack and an interception Week 16 against the Titans, but he had only one solo tackle. The interception, which was his third of the year, came on a diving grab on a pass intended for Kenny Britt in the first quarter.
Analysis: Shields is a valued member of the Packers secondary, but his numbers leave a bit to be desired. Of course, injuries are part of the reason for that -- he missed six consecutive games earlier this season -- but even so, he's just a so-so option in Fantasy IDP leagues.

Shield picks off Stafford

News: Green Bay defensive back Sam Shields came up big for the Packers during Sunday's contest against the Lions at home in Week 14. Shields picked off Matt Stafford in the second quarter for his second interception of the season. He also added three tackles (two solo) in a 27-20 victory.
Analysis: Shields has now seven interception in his career and has not been able to make much of an impact in Fantasy. He has just 21 tackles and two interceptions on the year and is not considered to be a worthwhile option in all Fantasy formats moving forward.

Shields exits with shin injury

News: Green Bay defensive back Sam Shields was forced out of Sunday's Week 6 contest against the Packers in the fourth quarter with a shin injury. Shields did make an impact on Sunday before he was helped off as he picked off Matt Schaub for his first interception of the year. Shields finished with four tackles before he was carted back to the locker room for further evaluations.
Analysis: Shields has just six career interceptions entering Sunday's game and now has 18 tackles on the year through six contests. He was taken out of the game after getting kicked in the shin, as the Packers would not reveal the severity of his injury during the game. At this point, it seems as it may have been a precautious approach late in the game. We'll continue to monitor his status in the coming days. Shields does not rack up a ton of tackles and is considered merely a low-end option in deeper IDP formats, when healthy.

Shields sets new INT mark

News: Packers DB Sam Shields recorded his third interception of the year in Week 14 against the Raiders -- setting a new career high. He picked off QB Carson Palmer in the fourth quarter, clinching the 46-16 win. Shields also had one tackle in the victory.
Analysis: Shields is having a career campaign for the Packers as he has been seeing more time after a breaking rookie year. But because he does not rack up a ton of tackles, continue to view him as more of a low-end Fantasy DB in IDP formats.

Shields to play 'smarter'

News: Green Bay CB Sam Shields, who’s practicing after being cleared last week to return from a concussion sustained in Week 6, said the injury wouldn’t drastically change his aggressive style of play. Shields was hurt after getting hit trying to return an interception out of the end zone. “I’ve just got to be smarter,” he said.
Analysis: Shields has matched his interception total from his rookie season (two) through only six games this year. The 23-year-old isn't a starter, but is a regular contributor for the Packers and has racked up 23 tackles. Consider him a low-end option in Fantasy IDP formats for now.

Shields cleared to return

News: On the first day of the Packers bye week, CB Sam Shields (concussion) was cleared to return to action, according to coach Mike McCarthy on Monday. Shields, who was concussed trying to return an interception Week 6 against the Rams, had made progress all week and McCarthy said the bye should help him recover fully. He sat out Week 7.
Analysis: Shields might not be in the starting lineup, but he plays regularly for the Packers and is on track for his best statistical season in 2011. It's just that he has very low-end Fantasy appeal when healthy. He should be back in Week 9 at San Diego.

Shields out with concussion

News: Packers DB Sam Shields was listed among the inactives for Week 7 against the Vikings. He suffered a concussion in Week 6 against St. Louis.
Analysis: Shields already has two interceptions on the year and is six tackles away from matching the mark from his rookie campaign. No word yet on when he might be able to return so keep an eye on his status going forward. When healthy, Shields should be considered a low-end Fantasy DB in IDP formats.

Packers to evaluate Shields

News: Green Bay DB Sam Shields, who suffered a concussion in Week 6 against St. Louis, was listed as doubtful on Friday’s injury report. He hasn’t practiced all week, but coach Mike McCarthy said the nickel back is making progress and will undergo more tests on Saturday.
Analysis: McCarthy added that the results of Saturday's tests will determine if he can play in Week 7 against Minnesota. Shields has progressed in his second NFL season and has registered 23 tackles and two interceptions in five games. He still remains an inconsistent Fantasy producer and should be viewed as a low-end option in IDP formats.

Shields suffers head injury

News: Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy announced after the Packers’ 24-3 win over the Rams on Sunday that CB Sam Shields sustained a head injury and was being evaluated. Shields was hurt when he was leveled after a third quarter interception in the end zone. He finished the game with five tackles and the interception.
Analysis: Shields has minimal Fantasy value when healthy. Keep an eye on his status heading into Week 7 at Minnesota, but don't plan on using Shields in most formats.

Shields grabs first INT of year

News: Packers DB Sam Shields picked off Broncos QB Kyle Orton in the end zone and then brought it out to Denver territory for a 60-yard return. That was his first pick of the season. Green Bay would go on to win the game, 49-23. Shields also recorded three solo tackles.
Analysis: Shields now has 15 tackles on the year for Green Bay. Prior to Sunday his last interceptions came back in the NFC Championship game against the Bears, when he had two. The Packers secondary hasn't been great this year and Shields hasn't done much to help change that. Continue to view him as a low-end DB option in Fantasy IDP leagues.

Shields picks rookie mark

News: Green Bay DB Sam Shields recorded two interceptions in the Packers' 21-14 victory over Chicago in the NFC Championship on Sunday. Shields, who was undrafted out of Miami before signing with Green Bay at the beginning of the season, became the first rookie to post a sack and two interceptions in a playoff game. "Young Sam Shields grew up today," safety Charlie Peprah. "We're going to need that two weeks from now."
Analysis: Shields has become a stellar discovery for the Packers in their secondary. He continues to play strong defense and now has four interceptions in 16 games this season. Both of his picks in Sunday's game came on passes at least 15 yards downfield. If he maintains his recent progression, he could make for a viable DB option in IDP drafts for the 2011 season.

Shields hurts knee in practice

News: Packers rookie DB Sam Shields hurt his knee during practice Wednesday.
Analysis: Shields is mostly a backup DB for the Packers, but has started five games in 2010. He is a nice young talent, but remains unworthy of Fantasy ownership for now.

Shields gets first INT

News: Packers rookie DB Sam Shields registered his first NFL interception in the first quarter of the Week 9 game against the Cowboys. Dallas QB Jon Kitna gave Miles Austin a 1-on-1 chance against Shields in the first quarter, and the rookie came down with it. The game wasn't all positive for Shields, who was out-jumped by Cowboys rookie WR Dez Bryant for a touchdown in the second quarter. Shields added a solo tackle and another pass deflection in the win.
Analysis: Shields, the Miami product, was moved all around in college and ended up playing DB in his senior year. The Packers took a flier on him after he was not drafted and he's ended up starting a few games for the injury-rattled Packers this season. Still, he does not make enough plays to warrant Fantasy value just yet, but he sure gets plenty of passes his way, so he could be on the rise.
