News: The Lions signed receiver Devin Thomas to a futures contract earlier this offseason. Thomas had left the Bears in August of last year, choosing to retire. He's obviously changed his mind.
Analysis: Thomas will battle for a spot on the roster. He shouldn't be considered in Fantasy.
News: Former Bears receiver Devin Thomas said Wednesday that he is ready to un-retire from the NFL, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. "Im officially a free agent so DT fans I will keep y'all posted where I land," he wrote on his Twitter account. "I finally feel complete as a human being and i am ready to return to the NFL! Im not old, banged up, or hate the game. I retired to set fire to my spirit and find truth."
Analysis: Thomas originally said he stepped away from the game in order to stay healthy. "What am I risking when I step onto the field?" he told the paper. "Do I want to be in a position where I can't play with my kids? Do I want to end up leaving the game with all kinds of brain damage where I can't remember things? It's a good time for me to step away." Now, he wants to return. He'll have to find a team and shouldn't carry much Fantasy value.
News: Bears wide receiver Devin Thomas has retired. He left the Bears on Sunday and later announced his retirement. The former Washington Redskins and New York Giants player offered no immediate explanation, saying on Twitter, "I have decided to retire from the NFL."
Analysis: A 2008 second-round draft pick by the Redskins, he was cut in 2010 and made three catches last season with the Giants. He had 43 career receptions for 482 yards and three touchdowns and averaged 24.1 yards per kick return.
News: Chicago and receiver Devin Thomas have agreed to a one-year contract. The Bears announced the move Wednesday on their website.
Analysis: Thomas has 43 receptions for 482 yards in four seasons with Washington, Carolina and the New York Giants. He was mainly a special-teams contributor for the Giants last season and recovered two fumbles in the NFC title game against San Francisco, including one that set up the winning field goal in overtime, for the eventual Super Bowl champions. In terms of Fantasy value, Thomas doesn't have much. Ignore him on Draft Day.
News: After having a scary moment at the end of the first half Week 15 against the Redskins, Giants WR Devin Thomas has been cleared to practice. Team doctors have diagnosed him with a burner, which is a relief because Thomas was carted off during halftime.
Analysis: Thomas didn't have any catches before getting hurt and is mostly a special teams contributor for the Giants. Continue to leave him off Fantasy rosters.
News: After the last play of the half Week 15, a Washington kickoff return, Giants receiver Devin Thomas was lifted on a stretcher and carted off. There was no immediate word on his injury, but his neck was stabilized as he was removed. Thomas was moving his legs he was attended to by trainers. Later, the team said Thomas was being evaluated for a neck injury, but he was up and walking around.
Analysis: Thomas didn't have any catches before getting hurt and is mostly a special teams contributor for the Giants.
News: Giants WR Devin Thomas was able to play Saturday night in the preseason opener at Carolina even though he recently broke his pinkie finger so badly that the bone actually broke through the skin. Thomas finished the game with three catches for 23 yards.
Analysis: Thomas probably played because he sees an opportunity to make plays for the Giants with Steve Smith now with the Eagles. The Giants are looking for a third WR behind Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham, and Thomas will likely compete for the role. While we don't expect much from him this season, he is worth keeping an eye on. Still, don't plan on drafting him in the majority of leagues.
News: Giants WR Devin Thomas' dislocated pinky finger actually broke through the skin, so he will be out of action until the training staff feels there is no risk of infection, coach Tom Coughlin told reporters.
Analysis: This is not what the Giants need and it's not good news for Thomas, who was having a strong camp. The Giants just lost TE Kevin Boss, haven't re-signed Steve Smith and the depth chart behind Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham is up for grabs. Thomas isn't worth drafting in Fantasy, but he has the potential to be part of the Giants' passing game in 2011.
News: Giants WR Devin Thomas suffered an apparent injury on Friday, as his finger was dislocated. He suffered the injury while dropping a pass. There was no immediate timetable given by the team in terms of when he will be back on the field.
Analysis: Thomas has bounced around from Washington to Carolina before landing in New York. He has never been able to settle into a situation since being highly touted out of Michigan State in 2008. Thomas has just 40 career catches over three seasons, and he didn't haul in a single ball in 2010. Fantasy owners should keep an eye on his health, but he is not worth selecting in any format on Draft Day.
News: The Giants claimed WR Devin Thomas off waivers from Carolina on Wednesday.
Analysis: Thomas will help an injury-riddled Giants receiving corps, but he's unlikely to make much of an impact in Week 12 against the Jaguars with only a couple of days to learn the playbook. Continue to ignore Thomas in Fantasy play.
News: The Panthers waived WR Devin Thomas on Tuesday.
Analysis: Thomas started this season with Washington but was waived by them. Carolina then picked him up and now have waived him themselves. Continue to ignore Thomas in Fantasy play.
News: The Carolina Panthers have shored up their banged-up secondary by signing safety Gerald Alexander. The Panthers waived receiver Devin Thomas Tuesday to make room for Alexander, a Boise State product who was Detroit's second-round pick in 2007. Reserve safeties Jordan Pugh and Marcus Hudson are injured. Also, Keith Null becomes the latest Carolina QB as linebacker Sean Ware was placed on the practice squad injured reserve. Null started four games last season as a rookie with St. Louis and threw three touchdowns and nine interception.
Analysis: None of these players were or are expected to be regular stat contributors in the first place. Keep them off of Fantasy rosters.
News: Panthers WR Devin Thomas (groin) was limited in practice Thursday. He hasn't played yet for the Panthers and this injury doesn't help his status for Week 8 at St. Louis.
Analysis: Thomas was claimed off waivers a few weeks ago from Washington and thought he was going to be activated in Week 7 against the 49ers, but he was not. While he was out, the Panthers' passing game emerged, as did WRs Brandon LaFell and David Gettis. Thomas now has an uphill battle to fight once he is healthy. Continue to ignore him in Fantasy until he makes some sort of impact.
News: Panthers WR Devin Thomas said he thinks he'll be active Week 7 against the 49ers, even with the return of Steve Smith (ankle). "Thankfully I'm not on the side of Smitty, so I don't have to worry about his position," Thomas said. "But I think I'm going be in the mix. The more I know, the more I'll play."
Analysis: Thomas was claimed off waivers from Washington during the Panthers' bye week. He has had some time to get acclimated to the offense -- an offense that desperately needs a jump start. The Panthers are dead last in total and scoring offense. Carolina is going back to QB Matt Moore in Week 7. Thomas has been a bust since entering the NFL, but now that he has a new home, maybe he will showcase his skills. The 49ers have been tough on receivers in 2010, allowing them to average just 16 Fantasy points per week. Thomas is more of a wait-and-see Fantasy project.
News: The Panthers have claimed WR Devin Thomas off waivers from the Redskins. He's expected to help on special teams initially and eventually work in the offense. The Panthers are off in Week 6 but he'll try to acclimate himself with the offense before their Week 7 game vs. the 49ers.
Analysis: Thomas has good speed but never made it as a receiver in Washington. He's a bit injury prone and certainly isn't up to snuff as a quality option, but with the Panthers' receiving corps a big mess, he can't hurt. Don't even consider him until he starts seeing regular playing time.
News: According to The Washington Post, the Redskins released WR Devin Thomas on Saturday. Washington's top draft pick from the 2008 draft got buried on the depth chart this season and hasn't recorded a receiving stat yet this year. With an opening on the roster Washington promoted running back Keiland Williams from the practice squad for Sunday's game against Green Bay. "I still don't know, to this day, what it was or what I did," Thomas said Saturday afternoon in a lengthy phone interview. "I went out and I worked as hard as I could. Even when it was clear, you know, that they weren't going to play me, I just kept doing everything I could to try to show them I deserved to be out there. I had guys [teammates] telling me I should be out there and that they knew I could help the team win."
Analysis: Thomas is staying positive as he said later in the interview that he's ready to go to a team that wants him to make plays and help them win. It is unclear which team will sign him, but the former first-round pick will find a team sooner than later. Until he lands a team, however, Thomas can be dropped in all Fantasy leagues. He's been a bust thus far in his career -- just 40 catches for 445 yards and three touchdowns in 31 games -- so only time will tell if he pans out.
News: Redskins WR Devin Thomas said WR coach Keenan McCardell and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan talked to him about his role. Thomas does not expect to play much, if at all, from scrimmage vs. Houston in Week 2. Thomas also didn't play a snap on offense in Week 1 against Dallas.
Analysis: Thomas has just 40 catches for 445 yards and three touchdowns in 31 career games. He has definitely been a bust of an NFL player and who knows when, or if, he will break out. Keep Thomas reserved in Fantasy heading into Week 2.
News: Redskins WR Devin Thomas did not play one snap from scrimmage vs. Dallas on Sunday night and he might again be relegated to kickoff duty in Week 2 vs. Houston. He said he doesn't understand why he's not playing. "No, I don't," Thomas said.
Analysis: Thomas is looking like a major bust at this point after being taken in the second round a couple of years ago. He should only be stashed away in very deep Fantasy formats at this point.
News: Redskins WR Devin Thomas, who was a starter for much of last season, was only a factor on kickoff returns Week 1 against the Cowboys. He didn't even get a target on offense, much less a catch.
Analysis: Anthony Armstrong and Joey Galloway have both leaped past Thomas on the depth chart, so you really have no reason to own the underachiever in Fantasy anymore. Leave him on waivers for Week 2 against the Texans.
News: Redskins WR Devin Thomas, who had just 25 catches for 325 yards in 2009 even though he spent much of the year as the team's No. 2 WR, will enter the 2010 season lower on the depth chart. He will likely return kicks Week 1 against the Cowboys, but his role on offense is less certain. "Going in, he's not slated to do as much because of the group we've got going," offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said.
Analysis: Thomas apparently didn't impress enough this preseason to remain ahead of Joey Galloway and Anthony Armstrong on the depth chart, but based on his performance last year, you weren't looking to add him in Fantasy anyway. New Redskins QB Donovan McNabb likes to spread the ball around, but against a tough Cowboys defense, Thomas likely won't be much of a factor. Leave him on waivers in Fantasy.
News: The Washington Post reports that Redskins WR Devin Thomas is expected to see more playing time in Thursday's preseason finale against the Cardinals in Arizona after he didn't get any playing time at wide receiver Friday night at the Jets. "Had to make some decisions today about who we're going to play," Shanahan said after Friday's game. "It's really hard to get receivers in the mix unless you play them, get them running a little bit." But Shanahan said Thomas will get "a lot" of action next week.
Analysis: Thomas is vying for a shot to start opposite Santana Moss, but the fact he didn't play much in Friday's game is not a good sign. The third game of the preseason is thought of as the dress rehearsal for the start of the regular season with regulars playing the longest they will at any point in the preseason and with teams gameplanning and going through weekly routines like they will during the regular season. If Thomas wasn't a part of the dress rehearsal, it isn't a good sign that he'll be a starter come Week 1. He'll have a chance to make some noise in the finale, however, with the regulars likely to play very limited snaps. If he can open some eyes against the Cardinals, there could be hope yet. Continue to monitor Thomas' performance. He's worth a late-round pick on Draft Day in deeper leagues as a potential sleeper, but it all depends on his winning a starting job.
News: Redskins WR Devin Thomas is in a major fight for a roster spot. With others making big plays, he needed to do something Friday night in the preseason opener against Buffalo. And he did. Thomas got behind the secondary for a 44-yard touchdown pass. He was open enough that he was able to slow down a step to catch Rex Grossman's pass. Thomas finished with three catches for 64 yards and the score.
Analysis: This performance will help Thomas a lot. He's entering his third year in the NFL, and we still believe Thomas can have a breakout year. He has to outplay some mediocre competition in the aging Joey Galloway and the inexperienced Roydell Williams and Anthony Armstrong, and we hope Thomas can emerge as a starter. Continue to monitor Thomas' performance, and he's worth a late-round pick on Draft Day. He needs to have more performances like this as the preseason goes on.
News: Redskins WR Devin Thomas hasn't impressed the coaches during training camp, mainly because he's inconsistent. That was verified when the Redskins' initial depth chart came out Tuesday and had Thomas as a third-string receiver behind the likes of Joey Galloway, Anthony Armstrong and Roydell Williams. Thomas is listed as the team's top kick-return man, though, so chances are he'll earn a roster spot.
Analysis: Thomas might be a trendy sleeper pick because he's entering his third season, but he's not likely to break out and play big week in and week out. Unless he shows us -- and the Redskins coaching staff -- something in the preseason, we don't think he's worth drafting this summer. He'll likely be available off waivers in most leagues.
News: Former second-round picks Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly are listed with the third-team offense on the Redskins depth chart, released Monday. Roydell Williams and Anthony Armstrong are the No. 2 receivers. Thomas, for now, is the No. 1 kick returner.
Analysis: Thomas, entering his third year in the NFL, has a lot to prove before Fantasy owners can trust him. We see him playing a big role in Washington's offense this year, but he has to play better in practice if new coach Mike Shanahan is going to trust him. We view Thomas as a No. 4 Fantasy WR, and he's only worth a late-round pick in deep leagues.
News: The Washington Post reports Redskins coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan are waiting to see more from third-year receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly. The paper reports Thomas "hasn't displayed the type of play-after-play consistency the Shanahans like to see from that position." And Kelly "hasn't distinguished himself yet" either thus far in the offseason.
Analysis: We expect Thomas to step up and play well opposite Santana Moss, and he should improve in his third year. Thomas is worth a late-round pick in deep leagues, and hopefully he starts to be more consistent.
News: The Washington Post reports that Redskins WR Santana Moss, who is rehabbing from knee surgery, was working out fully during the OTA session Monday. As he continues to recover, the Redskins are hopeful third-year wideouts Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly inspire confidence for the remainder of the offseason program. If Moss is out for any point this season, Thomas and Kelly appear to be the Redskins' best options at the position. Kelly opened last season as the starting Z receiver, or flanker, opposite Moss, the split end or X receiver. The previous regime planned for Thomas to eventually replace Moss at X, which is usually the position reserved for wideouts with momentum-changing, stretch-the-field speed, which Thomas possesses, and for Kelly to be a chain-moving big target.
Analysis: Moss might be sidelined to start the season, which could open the door for Thomas and Kelly to have a bigger role. We like Thomas as a No. 4 Fantasy WR, and he's worth a late-round pick in all leagues. Kelly is not worth drafting in the majority of leagues, but he could be worth adding off the waiver wire if he starts out the season playing well and Moss is limited.
News: New Washington coach Mike Shanahan said Wednesday he's impressed with young receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly. "Devin Thomas (hamstring) has been hurt through most of the minicamps and OTAs," Shanahan said. "It's good to get Devin back and watch him in these OTAs because I didn't get a chance to watch him except for the first day in our minicamp. Malcolm, it's like all of the receivers, learning the system, getting the chance to show their skills. It's going to be an interesting question here over the next two months, three months. We got a number of wide receivers that are competing for a position. I like what I have seen thus far."
Analysis: Thomas, now that he's healthy, should compete for the No. 2 WR job opposite Santana Moss. He is entering his third year in the NFL, and he should be in line for a breakout year. We like Thomas with a late-round pick in all leagues on Draft Day, and he should be considered a sleeper in deep formats.
News: The Philadelphia Eagles traded QB Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins for a pair of draft picks. The Eagles will receive a second-round pick (37th overall) in this month's NFL draft and either a third- or fourth-round pick next year. It is believed that McNabb will take over the starting job from Jason Campbell, which means he'll be throwing passes to promising young receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly this season.
Analysis: There are no concerns about McNabb learning Mike Shanahan's version of the West Coast offense as it's similar to what he ran in Philadelphia. Tack on McNabb's history of connecting with his receivers for touchdowns both deep and short, and there will be some opportunity for Thomas and Kelly to make some plays. The guy with more potential here is Thomas given his ability to get going deep, whereas Kelly has struggled with knee injuries and is more of a physical short- and mid-range type. We do like what this trade does for Thomas -- he's now more of a sleeper on Draft Day whereas before he might not have been drafted. He's a lock for the middle-to-late rounds. As for Kelly, he's no better than a late-round pick even with the upgrade.
News: Redskins WR Devin Thomas is optimistic about his upcoming season, his third in the the NFL but his first under head coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Thomas has spent the offseason working on his attitude and says he's matured and ready to accept more responsibility in the offense. Thomas expects to work all over the field, not just in a single spot, and believes that Kyle Shanahan's success in Houston will translate to the Redskins' pass attack in 2010. "[The Texans] were the leading passing team and everything like that, so I just feel like it's going to be great for us," Thomas said. "We have so much talent, they're going to use all of us and put us in situations to win. I'm real confident in what we're going to do now."
Analysis: Earlier this offseason Mike Shanahan said he will evaluate all of his receivers and make additions and subtractions if necessary. Thomas should be a cinch to make the final roster, and some Fantasy owners will roll the dice on him because he's entering his third season, which is typically when receivers break out and begin to become more productive. The biggest problems we have with Thomas is his inconsistency on the field and the nagging injuries he's played through. There is big-play potential with Thomas, but there's no promise that he'll put up huge numbers. You should expect him to top the 325 yards and three touchdowns he had in his second season, though. Figure Thomas to be worth a late-round pick in drafts.
News: New Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said in an interview with CBSSports.com at the NFL Annual Meetings in Orlando, FL that his receiving corps will get a thorough review before next month's draft just so he knows what he has on his roster. Shanahan said he's watched film on the likes of Santana Moss, Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly, but he wants to see them up close and personal. "The idea is to take them through normal workouts and see where these guys fit into our system," Shanahan said. "There's nothing like actually working a guy out, working with him on the field, be in meetings with him for a month. Actually getting to minicamp, watching the guy run routes, see how he fits. ... It's an evaluation. Not a tryout because they're on our team. But it might be a tryout because if they don't do good they could be off the team."
Analysis: This seems to be Shanahan's plan at all positions this spring, but his receiving corps is especially without an identity. Santana Moss is a wise veteran but horribly inconsistent while third-year receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly have yet to live up to their potential. All three have a solid shot to make the final roster, but all three could continue to post disappointing stats. We see Moss as a quality No. 4/reserve Fantasy WR worth a middle- to late-round pick while Thomas and Kelly are late-round fliers.
News: Redskins QB Jason Campbell said in an interview with CBSSports.com that he expects Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly to make tremendous strides in 2010, which will be their third year in the NFL. "I'm definitely excited about those two," Campbell said. "Devin is a guy who is big, fast and strong. He really came a long last year. Malcolm is a long-arm guy who can go up and get the ball. Once we continue to work with him and he continues to get more comfortable he can definitely become a big-time receiver for us and a possession receiver." Thomas finished the season with 25 catches for 325 yards and three touchdowns, all career highs. And Kelly also set career highs with 25 catches for 347 yards.
Analysis: We expect Thomas and Kelly to improve in 2010, especially with the addition of Mike Shanahan as the head coach. The Redskins have to decide if Campbell will remain the starting QB, but that's a move we expect to happen. And the Redskins actually have some talent in the passing game with Santana Moss, Chris Cooley and Fred Davis. But there is room for Thomas and Kelly to make an impact, and they are worth drafting as late-round fliers. Thomas has more upside in standard leagues based on his big-play ability, and Kelly has higher value in leagues where receptions count.
News: Redskins QB Richard Bartel, WR Devin Thomas, RB P.J. Hill, DB LaRon Landry, DB Marcus McCauley, LB Alvin Bowen, LB Curtis Gatewood and DL Albert Haynesworth have all been ruled inactive for Week 17 at San Diego.
Analysis: Landry, Thomas and Haynesworth are all out because of injuries. Haynesworth is the most valuable Fantasy player out of the trio. He is upset at his role in Washington and could find a new home in 2010. However, whether he stays or goes, Haynesworth is still a decent Fantasy DL. Landry will be more of a No. 3 Fantasy DB on Draft Day 2010. As for Thomas, he came on late in the season and it will be interesting to see his role next season. He is probably going to be more of a Fantasy sleeper next Draft Day. The remaining inactive players are mostly reserves and don't have a lot or any Fantasy appeal.
News: Washington DB LaRon Landry and WR Devin Thomas have been ruled out for the team's Week 17 game against the Chargers.
Analysis: Landry is a decent option in IDP formats when healthy while Thomas is just a low-end Fantasy option who will miss his third game in a row.
News: Receiver Devin Thomas, who missed Sunday's game vs. Dallas with a sprained ankle, did footwork drills Monday and will try to play next weekend at San Diego.
Analysis: Thomas might see limited reps based on his health. This is something we'll keep you posted on, but he's far from being a legit Fantasy option, even in Week 17 against a possible second-string defense for the playoff-bound Chargers.
News: The Redskins have listed the following players as inactive for the Week 16 Sunday night game against Dallas: QB Richard Bartel, WR Devin Thomas, CB Kevin Barnes, LB Alvin Bowen, LB Curtis Gatewood and DL Renaldo Wynn.
Analysis: Thomas hasn't been much of a factor the last few weeks since the Week 13 game when he went for 100 yards and two scores on seven catches. You can keep him on benches or waivers. The rest of the players listed above have little to no Fantasy value at this time.
News: Redskins WR Devin Thomas (ankle) did not practice again on Thursday as Washington hosts the Cowboys in Week 16. Thomas injured his ankle on a return in the Monday night Week 15 debacle against the Giants. Jim Zorn said Thursday that, out of all the injured Redskins, Thomas is the one most unlikely to play.
Analysis: Thomas hasn't been much of a factor the last few weeks since the Week 13 game when he went for 100 yards and two scores on seven catches. He caught three passes for 33 yards against the Cowboys in Week 11 and we figure similar production to be the case for the Week 16 game. That makes his Fantasy appeal low, if he can play in the game.
News: Redskins WR Devin Thomas (ankle) did not practice on Wednesday as Washington hosts the Cowboys in Week 16. Thomas injured his ankle on a return in the Monday night Week 15 debacle against the Giants.
News: Washington WR Devin Thomas did not make a single reception on Monday night at home against the Giants in the Week 15 thrashing. Thomas left the game with an ankle injury and did not return as this one got out of hand early.
Analysis: Thomas had that game in Week 13 against the Saints where he went for 100 yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions. He only had two catches in Week 14 against Oakland and was even less of a factor on Monday night as he spent some time injured with an ankle problem. You still can't count on him for more than two or three catches per game, making him a low-end Fantasy WR for Week 16 against Dallas on Sunday night. He made three catches for 33 yards against the Cowboys in Week 11.
News: Redskins WR Devin Thomas, who had seven catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns last week, didn't even come close Week 14 at Oakland. He had two catches for 38 yards and one carry for minus-4 yards.
Analysis: Thomas' performance this week was more what you've come to expect from him this season. His 100 yards last week represent nearly a third of his season total. You still can't count on him for more than two or three catches per game, making him a low-end Fantasy WR for Week 15 against the Giants.
News: Washington WR Devin Thomas had his breakout performance on Sunday of Week 13 in an overtime loss to the New Orleans Saints. Thomas caught seven passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns in the game. Quarterback Jason Campbell found him for a 5-yard score in the 2nd quarter and again in the 3rd from 13 yards out. Thomas had a long gain of 40 yards and clearly looked like Campbell's favorite target in the game.
Analysis: Thomas methodically and deliberately improved this season until this Week 13 explosion of Fantasy value. The Redskins may have found a new No. 1 receiver and Jason Campbell looked very comfortable relying on Thomas in the passing game. He still needs to do this consistently before we anoint him the chosen one but Thomas value has never been higher in Week 14 against the Oakland Raiders. He's definitely someone to add in all leagues right now if you have the roster space.
News: Washington WR Devin Thomas caught four passes for 46 yards on Sunday of Week 12 as the team lost at Philadelphia. His long was 35 yards.
Analysis: You can definitely see the beginning of Thomas Fantasy value now as hes improved his stats for three straight weeks. Thomas made two grabs for 37 yards Week 10, caught three for 33 in Week 11 and was even better against the Eagles Sunday. The Redskins play at home against the Saints in Week 13 and New Orleans isnt as good as Philly against the pass. That said, Thomas still hasnt done anything consistently well and we can only label him a injury replacement, at best, for Week 13.
News: Washington WR Devin Thomas caught three passes for 33 yards in the Week 11 loss at Dallas.
Analysis: Thomas now has five catches for 70 yards in his last two games, easily his best two-game stretch of his career. Still, with only 12 catches the entire season and one touchdown, his value is too limited for Fantasy use in Week 12 at Philly.
News: Washington WR Devin Thomas made two receptions for 37 yards, including a nifty catch and run for 27 of those yards late in the game, in the Week 10 win over the Broncos.
Analysis: Thomas went for 45 yards and his first touchdown in Week 7 against the Eagles but has done virtually nothing since and had done nothing before. He has low-end Fantasy appeal and you can keep him on waivers for Week 11 at Dallas.
News: Washington WR Devin Thomas saw a start in the Week 9 loss at Atlanta. He failed to make any catches in the game.
Analysis: Thomas had his first touchdown catch the last time out against the Eagles on Monday night before the bye. Thomas has seven catches for 71 yards on the season and also has a load of drops. Thomas is never a solid Fantasy play. The Redskins play Denver Week 10.
News: Washington WR Devin Thomas recorded the first touchdown catch of his career on Monday night against the Eagles. It was only one of two catches he would make in the game until the late stages. He finished with three grabs for 45 yards and the score in the 2nd quarter. Thomas also dropped a pass that hit him square in the hands.
Analysis: Thomas has seven catches for 71 yards on the season and now the touchdown. He also has far too many drops and doesnt get open nearly enough in the offense with a dismal quarterback throwing him the ball. Thomas is never a solid Fantasy play and the Redskins have a bye Week 8 anyway. Leave him on waivers.
News: Washington WR Devin Thomas carried the ball once for 2 yards Week 6 in a loss to the Chiefs. Thomas was targeted a few times in the passing game but did not make a catch.
Analysis: Thomas' best game was Week 5 when he caught three passes for 19 yards. He was rewarded with the start against the Chiefs but still did nothing. He's not worth using in Fantasy play Week 7 against the Eagles.
News: Washington WR Devin Thomas caught three passes for 19 yards Week 5 in a loss at Carolina.
Analysis: This was Thomas' best game of the season as he had just one catch for 7 yards before Week 5 in four games. Until Thomas becomes a bigger cog in the passing game, we do not recommend even having him on your Fantasy roster. The Redskins play Kansas City Week 6.
News: Washington second-year WRs Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas each went without a single catch during a Week 4 win over Tampa Bay. They were each targeted a few times but failed to come down with the ball.
Analysis: Thomas has one reception for 7 yards this season and Kelly has six grabs for 65 yards. Clearly, Kelly is the better Fantasy option but that is not really saying much. The Redskins' passing offense is dismal and Jason Campbell has a hard enough time finding Santana Moss and Chris Cooley consistently. Leave both Kelly and Thomas on waivers for Week 5 at Carolina.
News: Washington second-year WR Devin Thomas made his first reception of the season in Week 3's loss to the Lions. It went for 7 yards.
Analysis: Thomas has been targeted numerous times this season but Jason Campbell has struggled getting him and fellow second-year receiver Malcolm Kelly the ball. Until Campbell can establish a better rapport with Thomas he should be left on waivers in all leagues. Do not use him Week 4 against the Buccaneers.
News: Redskins WR Devin Thomas was targeted a few times in Week 2's win over the Rams. He did not make a catch.
Analysis: Thomas has failed to make a catch in each of the first two games this season and his quarterback Jason Campbell continues to struggle finding his receivers. Thomas does not need to be on Fantasy rosters at this time. Washington plays at Detroit in Week 3.
News: Redskins WR Devin Thomas had only one touch in the season opener at the Giants, but it wasn't a reception. He carried the ball once for no gain.
Analysis: Thomas is just a backup receiver and doesn't figure to make much of a Fantasy impact this season. Leave him on waivers for Week 2 against the Rams.
News:Malcolm Kelly has won the three-way battle for the Redskins' No. 2 receiver. Coach Jim Zorn said Wednesday that Kelly earned the nod ahead of veteran Antwaan Randle El and fellow second-year player Devin Thomas. Kelly was limited by a knee injury as a rookie a year ago but has come on fairly strong this preseason. Randle El will move to the slot on passing downs while Thomas is expected to work as a situational deep threat.
Analysis: For now, neither Randle El nor Thomas are worth owning in Fantasy play outside of the deepest of leagues. They'll have a shot to get stats later on this year if Kelly can't stay healthy. Because of his speed, Thomas has more potential than Randle El.
News: Redskins WR Devin Thomas corralled three catches for 36 yards vs. the Patriots in the team's third preseason game. Thomas has five catches for 55 yards during the preseason.
Analysis: Thomas still has yet to completely break out and be a reliable option for the Redskins. He's really looking like the type of receiver who needs three years to get a full understanding of what it takes to be good in the NFL. Since he's in his second season with Washington, expectations should be held in check. A speed receiver with decent size, count on Thomas as a reserve Fantasy option worth a late-round pick in drafts. He will have some opportunity to surprise this season.
News: Washington WR Devin Thomas (hamstring) was able to play in the team's first preseason game on Thursday against the Ravens. He made one catch in the game for 12 yards.
Analysis: Thomas could end up being a nice Fantasy sleeper this season as head coach Jim Zorn seems to have a decent amount confidence in him. He'll be worth taking a flier on in the later rounds on Draft Day.
News: Redskins head coach Jim Zorn said second-year WR Devin Thomas will get "as many reps as we can" in the team's preseason opener at Baltimore on Thursday. Thomas had been hampered by a hamstring injury but practiced on Tuesday. "We threw Devin a lot of balls today, and he was in there taking a lot of reps, getting a good feel for his legs," Zorn said. "We missed a couple with him, but when you're out of practice, you can see how he and the quarterback in the offense were off. They'll gel back again. The good thing is that things will come quicker now that he has the confidence in his legs."
Analysis: Zorn seems confident in his receiving protege, and Fantasy owners might be equally confident to take a look at Thomas with a late-round pick in drafts. He's got sleeper potential given the opportunity he'll have to play if he can stay healthy.
News: Stripped down to his black skintight shorts on one of the hottest days of the year, Devin Thomas was a lonely figure on the Washington Redskins practice field Monday morning. He ran sprints around orange cones, pantomimed catching the ball in pass patterns and stretched his nagging hamstring against the goal post. "It's frustrating not being able to be out there with the guys right now," said Thomas, the sweat dripping from his forearms, "so I'm doing everything I can to get back." A half-hour earlier, when the regular practice had ended, another second-year receiver walked off the field. Malcolm Kelly has also been battling a hamstring issue during training camp, but at least he was back in a helmet and full pads and was able to participate. "They just have to play," said coach Jim Zorn of his two young receivers. "They've got some distance to come."
Analysis: Zorn is asked daily about Thomas and Kelly, the 2008 second-round draft picks who were supposed to provide instant offense to the coach's West Coast passing attack. The results last year couldn't have been more disappointing: Thomas struggled learning how to run the pass patterns and caught only 15 passes in 16 games; Kelly had hamstring, knee and ankle injuries and caught just three passes in five games. The Redskins are counting on Thomas and Kelly to help their passing game, but they still remain just low-end Fantasy fliers at this point.
News: Redskins WR Santana Moss and Devin Thomas tweaked hamstrings during the morning practice in the rain Thursday and sat out the afternoon session.
Analysis: Thomas didn't quite have the rookie season the Redskins would have liked in 2008, recording just 15 catches for 120 yards. He also made just one start. Thomas had lasik eye surgery in the offseason and he feels the procedure will be a big help in 2009. The Redskins are counting on Thomas to help their passing game, but he still remains just a low-end Fantasy flier. This injury is not considered serious.
News: Redskins coach Jim Zorn said Friday that Devin Thomas is ahead of Malcolm Kelly as the two receivers try to come back from injuries, which ruined their rookie year in 2008. "I would say that Devin is a bit ahead of Malcolm, but Malcolm right now is going to continue to accelerate," Zorn said. "He's also learning some of the details not just learning the overall picture. He's probably further ahead than I thought he would be coming out here. I'm excited he's competing, he's just working on some of the details to get himself open a little bit better." Zorn said Thomas has a chance for a starting job, which would mean he could overtake Antwaan Randle El. "We have a lot of confidence in where he's headed," Zorn said of Thomas. "I think Malcolm Kelly is coming on, Devin is showing that he is a little more seasoned than Malcolm right now, but they're both going to be competing and Antwaan is not going to give it up, so we're having great competition at that flanker position especially with those two guys."
Analysis: We still need to see Thomas and Kelly on the field and how each are doing, but it appears like Thomas is a WR to target with a late-round pick in deeper leagues. Randle El remains the starter for now, but he also is worth a late-round flier.
News: The Washington Post reports Redskins QB Jason Campbell is counting on young receivers Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas this season. "They're ready for us to lean on them," Campbell said. "I'm saying that because of what I've seen from them" in workouts. Campbell worked closely with Thomas, Kelly and TE Fred Davis, also entering his second season, during the offseason. "You could just see the development and the improvement," Campbell said. "You could see the change in their approach and their understanding about the game. With Devin, he's going into his second year in the league and I think he's getting some things figured out. And Malcolm ... the key with Malcolm is just to keep him on the field and keep that knee right. ... And Fred, Fred has a lot of talent. He can be a guy who we really take advantage of with Chris Cooley. These are talented guys, and I just saw a lot from them to be real optimistic about. I wouldn't say that if I didn't believe it."
Analysis: Like Campbell said, the key with Kelly is health. Thomas needs an opportunity, and Davis would be better if Cooley wasn't around. All three aren't worth drafting in standard leagues, but they are worth keeping an eye on during the season in case they start out playing well to add off the waiver wire.
News: According to the team web site, Redskins WR Devin Thomas is working on running better routes. "In the NFL, it's not always about speed, it's about how you use your speed," Thomas said. "A lot of times I get caught up with running fast, but you have to balance your speed with how you run your routes." As a rookie, Thomas caught 15 passes for 120 yards. Thomas says he is determined to improve this offseason. Thomas has also developed a better rapport with that Campbell. "Devin is getting a better understanding of the game," Campbell said. "The more he can understand, the more he can help us. He's an explosive guy. He's a big play guy. The thing we want to do is continue to encourage him."
Analysis: Thomas has been slowed by a hamstring injury this offseason, but he also is expected to be back in action during OTAs. That's a good sign, and Thomas should be considered a sleeper this year. Plan on drafting Thomas with a late-round pick in deep leagues.
News: The Washington Times reports the Redskins are counting on second-year WRDevin Thomas to make their offense more dynamic this year. Thomas was a disappointment last year. He failed the conditioning test that opened training camp last summer and missed 18 days with a pulled right hamstring, ruining his preseason. The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder didn't fare much better in the regular season, catching just 15 passes for 120 yards and no touchdowns. He also led the Redskins in offensive pass interference penalties. "Devin didn't get as many opportunities as I hoped he would've," receiver coach Stan Hixon said. "It seemed like something always happened. Devin plays 100 miles an hour, and he needs to learn to understand the game more." Hixon said Thomas "seems to be a lot more confident" because he knows the offense better, a statement with which Thomas agreed. "It's that time," he said. "It could've been last year, but we was going through our struggles, everybody learning the offense. I was frustrated, but I knew there was no point in bickering about it. This year, man, I feel like it's ready. It's more than the pot boiling. You see the steam, and you hear the tea kettle whistling. It's time to take it off the stove."
Analysis: Thomas, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus, also had corrective lasik eye surgery recently and should be better off for it. Hopefully all of this will make him a better player, and he's worth a late-round pick in deeper Fantasy leagues this year. He should also be owned in dynasty leagues because down the road he might develop into a quality player.
News: Agent Drew Rosenhaus posted on Twitter that client Devin Thomas of the Redskins had corrective lasik eye surgery recently and should be better off for it. Thomas was a bust as a rookie, catching only 15 passes for 120 yards (an awful 8.0 avg.), scoring only on a run. "The Redskins have been very pleased with his recent work," Rosenhaus wrote.
Analysis: Thomas is one to watch this summer. We don't anticipate calling him a worthwhile draft pick, but if he shines in the preseason, then he could certainly carve out a role in the offense this season. He belongs only on dynasty/keeper league rosters at this point.
News: The Washington Post reports that Redskins second-year receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly were noticeably in better shape than they were last year, but that both are still having trouble shedding their injury-prone tags. Thomas re-aggravated his right hamstring injury from last year's training camp while Kelly couldn't practice as he is still recovering from microfracture surgery. Both players are expected to be ready for training camp in July, if not sooner.
Analysis: Thomas has spent his offseason working out at Redskins Park in hopes of improving in his second season, but the hamstring injury will set him back. Kelly is still hopeful to be a regular option in the offense. Neither player is expected to be close to a No. 1 option for Washington, and that's going to limit their Fantasy value heading into 2009. If anything, Thomas is a late-round flier in the deepest of seasonal drafts, and both are late-round options in dynasty/keeper formats.
News: Redskins rookie wideout Devin Thomas caught one pass for 17 yards in Week 16's win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Thomas was targeted a few more times but they were either dropped or were poor passes from Jason Campbell.
Analysis: The Redskins are finding success using Thomas on short routes and trick plays, and they're obviously hoping that he can eventually take a small pass or end around and turn it into a long gain. Seasonal Fantasy owners shouldn't want anything to do with Thomas, while those in dynasty/keeper leagues have reason for owning Thomas as a long-term candidate to play. He should continue developing this season and into 2009. He's not worth a start against the Niners in Week 17, however.
News: Washington rookie WR Devin Thomas did not make any catches in Week 15's loss to the Bengals but he did rush once for eight yards.
He's not worth a start against the Eagles in Week 16, however.
News: In the Redskins' 24-10 loss at the Ravens in Week 14, rookie WR Devin Thomas had three catches for 26 yards, which falls 2 yards shy of tying his career-high. However, Thomas had three catches in a game for the third time in five games.
Analysis: The Redskins are finding success using Thomas on short routes, and they're obviously hoping that he can eventually take a small pass and turn it into a long reception. Seasonal Fantasy owners shouldn't want anything to do with Thomas, while those in dynasty/keeper leagues have reason for owning Thomas as a long-term candidate to play. He should continue developing this season and into 2009. He's not worth a start at Cincy in Week 15.
News: Washington rookie WR Devin Thomas scored his first touchdown of his career in Week 13's game against the Giants. It came on a rush and not a pass. Thomas took an end around 29 yards to the end zone in the 2nd quarter to put the Redskins on the board. Thomas did not make a catch in the game.
Analysis: Thomas has 11 grabs for 77 yards this season and still has a minimal role in the offense. It was nice to see Jim Zorn get him involved with the end around but that figures to be rare and we don't expect too many more touchdowns from the rookie this season. Don't go picking him up for Week 14 at Baltimore.
News: Washington WR Devin Thomas did not make a catch in Week 12 at Seattle despite being active for the game and seeing playing time. Backup QB Todd Collins was active but did not play and the same goes for third-string RB Shaun Alexander.
Analysis: Thomas has a minimal role on offense and doesn't deserve a look in Fantasy. The same is true of Alexander and Collins heading into Week 13 at home against the Giants.
News: In the Redskins' 14-10 loss vs. the Cowboys in Week 11, rookie WR Devin Thomas caught three passes for 14 yards.
Analysis: Thomas has posted three catches in back-to-back weeks and looks like a semi-regular part of the Washington offense. The second-round pick out of Michigan State still only should be owned in dynasty/keeper leagues only, but he's starting to see an expanded role the likes of which might see him develop as the season rolls on. All that said, don't expect him to be a Fantasy asset when the Redskins play at the Seahawks in Week 12.
News: Redskins WR Devin Thomas, who entered the game with only five catches all season, made three catches for 14 yards Week 9 against the Steelers.
Analysis: Despite the three catches, Thomas has a minimal role on offense and doesn't deserve a look in Fantasy. The Redskins have a bye in Week 10 before hosting the Cowboys in Week 11.
News: Washington WR Devin Thomas, a rookie, caught one pass for nine yards in Week 8 at Detroit.
Analysis: Thomas is not a reliable Fantasy option and someone who should not be starting in any Fantasy leagues just yet in his early career. He might catch a pass here and there but they come few and far between. He's not recommended in Fantasy.
News: Washington defeated the Browns in Week 7 and the following players got into the game but did not stat: WR Devin Thomas, FB Mike Sellers, WR James Thrash and TE Todd Yoder. Backup QB Todd Collins didn't get into the game but was active.
Analysis: Thomas has at least three offensive pass interference penalties already this season and he only has four catches total. Thomas is not a reliable Fantasy option and someone who should not be starting in any Fantasy leagues just yet in his early career. The rest of the aforementioned players have no Fantasy value as the Redskins meet the Lions in Week 8.
News: Washington had several players play in Week 6's loss to the Rams but not stat: WR Devin Thomas, FB Mike Sellers and TEs Fred Davis and Todd Yoder. Backup QB Todd Collins did not get into the game.
Analysis: Thomas has at least three offensive pass interference penalties already this season and he only has four catches total. Thomas is not a reliable Fantasy option and someone who should not be starting in any Fantasy leagues just yet in his early career. The rest of the aforementioned players have no Fantasy value as the Redskins meet the Browns in Week 7.
News: Redskins rookie WR Devin Thomas looks like one. Thomas caught two passes in Week 5 against the Eagles for 28 yards but was flagged for another offensive pass interference call.
Analysis: Thomas has at least three offensive pass interference penalties already this season and he only has four catches total. Thomas is not a reliable Fantasy option and someone who should not be starting in any Fantasy leagues just yet in his early career. Leave him on the waiver wire for Week 6 at home against the Rams.
News: Washington rookie WR Devin Thomas started on Sunday in a win over the Cowboys but he did not record any stats.
Analysis: We thought Washington would try and get Thomas more involved in the passing game, but that didn't happen in Week 4. That makes Thomas not a reliable Fantasy option and someone who should not be starting in any Fantasy leagues just yet in his early career. Leave him on the waiver wire for Week 5 at Philadelphia.
News: Washington rookie wide receiver Devin Thomasalmost had his rookie moment in Week 3 against the Cardinals. Thomas found himself wide open down the sideline and QB Jason Campbell hit him for a 66-yard TD catch, what would have been his first as a pro. Unfortunately, there was a penalty on the play and it didn't count. Thomas finished the game with two catches for seven yards. He also took part in an end around that saw him rush for 16 yards and a Redskins first down.
Analysis: Despite just seven yards on two catches, it was obvious the Redskins were trying to get Thomas involved in the passing game. He's going to play more and more as the season goes on. That said, he's still not a viable Fantasy option heading into Week 4's meeting with Dallas.
News: Washington WR Devin Thomas and TE Todd Yoder were both active for Week 2's win over the Saints. Both players saw action in the game but did not pick up any offensive stats. Backup quarterback Todd Collins did not play but was active.
Analysis: Thomas is worth a look as a long-term Fantasy keeper but is not worth owning in Fantasy Week 3 when the Redskins take on the Cardinals. Collins and Yoder are also not viable Fantasy options next week.
News: Redskins rookie WR Devin Thomas played in his first professional game Week 1 against the Giants. He recorded the first catch of his career, and only reception in the game, at the 8:45 mark of the third quarter when Jason Campbell hit him for a 5-yard gain. He was stopped short on a 3rd-and-6 play by fellow rookie DB Kenny Phillips.
Analysis: Thomas, a first-round pick, appears well on his way to being the Redskins' third wide receiver by Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El. However, that might not equate to a lot of stats right away since he still has to learn the intricacies of Jim Zorn's offense. Thomas still remains more of a long-term Fantasy keeper heading into Week 2 against the Saints.
News: Washington rookie WR Devin Thomas played in Saturday's preseason game against the Jets but did not catch a pass. Thomas did return two kicks, however, for a total of 46 yards.
Analysis: Washington is looking for some playmakers behind Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El, and the rookie wide out could pay immediate dividends. They'll need to get him some passes in a game situation first, though. For now, consider Thomas a very low-end reserve in seasonal leagues and a second-round pick in rookie-only drafts.
News:Redskins DB Laron Landry (hamstring), DL Erasmus James (knee), WR Anthony Mix (rib) and RB Clinton Portis (coach's decision) won't play during Saturday's preseason game against the Jets, and RB Rock Cartwright (ribs) is doubtful, according to head coach Jim Zorn. WR Antwaan Randle El (hamstring) will be a game-time decision. Three players returning from injuries -- CB Carlos Rogers (knee), linebacker Rocky McIntosh (knee) and receiver Devin Thomas (hamstring) -- will make their preseason debuts. DE Jason Taylor, who has been bothered this week by a foot injury, will play briefly.
Analysis: The Redskins are dying to see their first-round pick Thomas in action. Washington is looking for some playmakers behind Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El, and the rookie wide out could pay immediate dividends. For now, consider Thomas a very low-end reserve in seasonal leagues and a second-round pick in rookie-only drafts.
News: Redskins coach Jim Zorn said Monday that rookie WR Devin Thomas was full-go at the morning practice and should be turning the corner on his recovery from a hamstring strain. "Today he did everything," Zorn said Monday. "We tried to pull him out and he kept himself in. He plopped on the ground one time to make a catch and bounced right up. I thought he accelerated very well. ... As he progresses this week, we could see him (at the N.Y. Jets). ... Now, he has to get assignments, route running, understanding what is going on. Hopefully he has had a chance to study and listen so that we don't lose a step as he enters back in the groove."
Analysis: Thomas should be OK and not miss much time. He has the chance to be a decent Fantasy option as a rookie, but any setback could hurt his chances of playing time this year. For now, consider Thomas a very low-end reserve in seasonal leagues and a second-round pick in rookie-only drafts.
News: Washington LB H.B. Blades, suffering from a knee injury, was kept out of Saturday's preseason game against the Bills. DL Erasmus James also was kept out with a knee injury. Safety LaRon Landry, LB Rocky McIntosh, CB Carlos Rogers and WR Devin Thomas all weren't fit to play, either.
Analysis: The big names on the inactive list for Washington are Landry, Rogers and Thomas. Luckily, it's a preseason game and not a regular season contest. None of these players are suffering from major injuries and should be ready come opening kickoff. Continue to monitor their progress during the preseason.
News: Redskins coach Jim Zorn said rookie receivers Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas on Tuesday need to improve their conditioning and said he anticipates the injured receivers will have a hard time having an impact on the offense early this season. Kelly, who has hamstring and knee injuries, and Thomas, who has a hamstring injury, were hurt early in training camp and are likely weeks from a full return. Kelly underwent arthroscopic surgery Monday to remove floating particles from his left knee, and Zorn said the early prognosis of a return in two weeks was "ambitious." Thomas was able to take part in limited drills in practice Tuesday but is unlikely to be able to practice fully until next week at the earliest.
Analysis: Figure on Thomas and Kelly making an impact later in the year. Neither is worth drafting at this time in seasonal leagues, but in rookie drafts, each is worth a third-round pick.
News: Redskins RB Clinton Portis (tight hip flexors), CB Carlos Rogers (knee), S LaRon Landry (hamstring), WR Devin Thomas (hamstring), WR Malcolm Kelly (hamstring), DL Anthony Montgomery (hand), LB H.B. Blades (knee), LB Rian Wallace (hand) and DE Erasmus James (knee) will not play in Sunday's preseason game against the Colts. DE Jason Taylor, obtained in a trade with Miami on July 20, is not expected to play nor is LB London Fletcher. LB Rocky McIntosh, coming back from a major knee injury, is unlikely to play as is WR Anthony Mix (hamstring).
Analysis: The big names on the inactive list for Washington are Portis, Landry, Thomas, Taylor and Fletcher. Luckily, it's a preseason game and not a regular season contest. None of these players are suffering from majors injuries and should be ready come opening kickoff. Continue to monitor their progress during the preseason.
News: Redskins rookie receiver Devin Thomas probably will miss the team's first exhibition game after pulling his right hamstring in practice Thursday. Washington's top pick in this year's draft is expected to miss about two weeks of training camp. That timetable would keep Thomas out of the Aug. 3 Hall of Fame game against the Indianapolis Colts. "We're going to see after two weeks how this thing looks. He may be ready in two weeks; it may be a few days later," Redskins coach Jim Zorn said. "We'll see how fast he can work himself into full speed." Thomas was optimistic that he will miss less than two weeks. Still, Zorn acknowledged there's a "learning curve" for any rookie. "He's got to nurse this thing back a little bit, but it doesn't mean he can't learn, pay attention," Zorn said.
Analysis: Thomas should be OK and not miss much time. He has the chance to be a decent Fantasy option as a rookie, but any setback could hurt his chances of playing time this year. For now, consider Thomas a low-end reserve in seasonal leagues and a second-round pick in rookie-only drafts.
News: WR Devin Thomas, the Redskins' top draft pick, has been carted away from practice after pulling his right hamstring at training camp. Coach Jim Zorn says the team doesn't immediately know the extent of the injury. Thomas was hurt Thursday while reaching over his head to catch a pass from quarterback Jason Campbell during 11-on-11 drills. Thomas was drafted in the second round, 34th overall, and signed a $4.83 million, four-year contract last week. "After we evaluate it, we can figure out what it means for him as far as getting back out on the field," Zorn said. "We'll get it calmed down, get it iced, evaluate it and get the diagnosis. Fortunately it's just a pulled muscle and theres no structural damage, so he'll be back soon."
News: Second-round draft pick Devin Thomas of Michigan State signed a $4.83 million, four-year contract with the Washington Redskins on Friday, two days before training camp. The deal includes a signing bonus of about $2.7 million for the wide receiver, who was Washington's top selection in April's NFL draft. The 6-foot-2, 218-pound Thomas was taken 34th overall and was the second wideout drafted. Thomas had one big year in college, catching a school-record 79 passes for 1,260 yards and eight touchdowns in 2007 as a junior at Michigan State. He also had a 29.1-yard average as a kickoff returner.
Analysis: Thomas has a chance to be a decent Fantasy sleeper in 2008. He was considered the best receiver coming into the draft by most prognosticators, and he will play in an offense in need of help at receiver. Consider Thomas with a late-round pick in seasonal drafts, and in rookie-only formats, take Thomas with a second-round pick.
News: Expected to be a first-round choice, the Redskins were able to snap up Michigan State WR Devin Thomas with the second-round pick they acquired from Atlanta. He is expected to fight for playing time as a mismatch slot receiver (or outside jump-ball receiver) this summer.
Analysis: Thomas is a good size/big speed receiver with excellent hands and an ability to go over the middle. His route-running skills are a little unpolished, but he's in the perfect spot (Jim Zorn's West-Coast Offense) to get acclimated and learn the game from the ground up. Don't expect a ton in his first year, but he could be a very effective wideout in the years to come. That's why owners should eyeball him with a late-round pick in seasonal drafts and a first-round choice in rookie-only formats this summer.
