Niners make flurry of moves Saturday

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8/30/2014) The 49ers made a slew of moves Saturday to pare their roster down to the required 53 for the regular season.

Among those moves was the placement of cornerback Kenneth Acker and fullback Will Tukuafu on the injured reserve list.

San Francisco cut the following players: T Carter Bykowski, TE Asante Cleveland, WR Lance Lewis, LS Kevin McDermott, CB Darryl Morris, G Al Netter, DL Lawrence Okoye, WR Kassim Osgood, T Michael Philipp, NT Mike Purcell, G Ryan Seymour, LB Shayne Skov, RB Alfonso Smith, G Adam Snyder, S C.J. Spillman, LB Chase Thomas, S Raymond Ventrone, WR L'Damian Washington and RB Glenn Winston.

Alfonso Smith doesn't make cut Saturday for Niners

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8/30/2014) Veteran running back Alfonso Smith has been released by the 49ers.

Smith, who signed with the team in late July, played all 16 games with Arizona in two of the last three seasons. He managed 54 yards on 18 carries in 2013.

Alfonso Smith signs with 49ers

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/28/2014) The 49ers signed running back Alfonso Smith Monday.

Smith saw limited work with the ball in his hands last season while playing all 16 games with the Cardinals. He carried the ball 18 times for 54 yards and a touchdown, with most of that work coming in the first three games of the season.

Cardinals fail to tender four players

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/11/2014) The Cardinals declined to tender offers to four restricted free agents: tight end Jake Ballard, running back Alfonso Smith, linebacker Marcus Benard and defensive end Ronald Talley. All will become unrestricted free agents at 4 p.m. ET.

Alfonso Smith's time in Arizona may be up

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/2/2014) Cardinals running back Alfonso Smith, a restricted free agent, "may be allowed to test the market," reports the team's website. Smith dropped down the depth chart and finished with 28 touches last season.

Rashad Jonson, Alfonso Smith good to go

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(12/1/2013) Cardinals defensive back Rashad Johnson (ribs) and running back Alfonso Smith (ankle), who were listed as probable on Friday's injury report, are both active for Week 13 at Philadelphia.

Three Cardinals probable Week 13

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(11/29/2013) Cardinals S Yeremiah Bell, S Rashad Johnson and RB Alfonso Smith are probable Week 13 against the Eagles.

All three players were able to participate in full practice Friday. Both Bell and Johnson were limited in practice Wednesday.

Cardinals backup pass catchers do little against Colts

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(11/24/2013) Cardinals WR Andre Roberts, WR Jaron Brown, RB Alfonso Smith and RB Stepfan Taylor did little Week 12 against the Colts.

Roberts turned in the best game, picking up 43 yards on three receptions. Brown caught just one pass for 16 yards. Smith and Taylor each had one catch. Smith gained 6 yards, while Taylor gained just 1 yard.

They'll take on the Eagles Week 13.

Alfonso Smith will play Week 8

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10/27/2013) Cardinals running back Alfonso Smith is active Week 8 against the Falcons.

Smith could see more action with Rashard Mendenhall out. Andre Ellington is expected to get the start, so Smith will not be the primary option.

Cardinals dealing with some minor injuries

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10/25/2013) Cardinals wide receiver Jaron Brown (ankle) and running back Alfonso Smith (hamstring) are both expected to play in Week 8 against the Falcons, and are listed on Friday's injury report as probable. Wide receiver Brittan Golden (hamstring) was limited in practice throughout the week, and is officially questionable for Sunday's game.

Cardinals get offensive contributions

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(10/13/2013) Several Cardinals made minor offensive contributions in the loss at San Francisco. Running back Stepfan Taylor ran twice for 7 yards, while running back Alfonso Smith ran once for 2 yards and lost a fumble.

Receivers Andre Roberts and Jaron Brown each caught a 5-yard pass, with Roberts targeted four times and Brown once. Tight end Jim Dray made a 4-yard grab.

Cards get several minor contributions Week 5

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(10/6/2013) The Cardinals received minor offensive contributions from a few role players Week 5 vs. Carolina.

Running back Alfonso Smith had three catches for 20 yards and tight end Jim Dray caught a touchdown and finished with two catches for 13 yards. Tight end Rob Housler and wide receiver Andre Roberts were both held without a catch.

The Cardinals will travel to San Francisco for a Week 6 showdown against the 49ers.

Alfonso Smith disappears after early touchdown

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(9/22/2013) Cardinals running back Alfonso Smith capped off the team's opening drive with a 3-yard touchdown run Week 3 at New Orleans -- a score he helped set up with rushes of 3 and 21 yards a few plays earlier. Those were the only three carries he got all day. He did have a 7-yard catch later in the contest, but it was his only target on the day.

Smith will likely continue to play just a supporting role when the Cardinals visit the Buccaneers in Week 4.

Cardinals backup running backs get limited work

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7:44 pm ET) Cardinals running backs Stepfan Taylor and Alfonso Smith got limited work against the Lions.

Taylor picked up 2 yards on 1 carry, while Smith had just 1 yard on 3 carries. Smith also had 1 catch for 5 yards. They will take on the Saints Week 3.

Alfonso Smith an intriguing Fantasy Scout Team option

by Nando Di Fino | Senior Fantasy Writer
(9/11/2013) Cardinals running back Alfonso Smith carried the ball 10 times for 26 yards in Week 1 against the Rams, accounting for 38 percent of the team's carries.

It was widely expected that Rashard Mendenhall would get a heavy workload in the offense, so Smith's emergence in the running game came as a bit of a surprise. It may have been due to Mendenhall's knee issues in the preseason -- an attempt to lighten the load early for the team's top runner.

The problem with relying on Smith for more carries going forward is that he has company on the depth chart -- Stepfan Taylor, Andre Ellington, and Ryan Williams. Guessing which way coach Bruce Arians may go for Week 2 is a tough task; he could continue with Smith, who is a punishing pass blocker. He could try out Taylor, an exciting rookie; he could put in Williams, a healthy Week 1 scratch.

If Smith gets another decent workload in Week 2, he may be worth a handcuff add. For now, though, he's probably best left on Scout Teams until a clearer picture emerges of how he will be used.

Alfonso Smith heavily involved

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(9/8/2013) With Ryan Williams a healthy scratch, Cardinals running back Alfonso Smith got 10 carries behind Rashard Mendenhall against the Rams. Smith gained just 26 yards, his longest run going 7 yards.

Smith, who was targeted once without a catch, faces the Lions at home in Week 2.

Alfonso Smith looking like primary backup

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(9/6/2013) Cardinals coach Bruce Arians does not really have a set rotation for the backup running back spot behind Rashard Mendenhall, but he did tell AZCardinals.com Friday he thinks Alfonso Smith will likely be the first option.

Smith appears to have earned the backup spot with a strong preseason, during which he rushed for 82 yards on 22 carries. The Cardinals open the season Sunday against the Rams in Week 1.

Patience allowing Alfonso Smith to take 'the next step'

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(8/26/2013) Cardinals running back Alfonso Smith is having a productive preseason. He's managed 22 carries for 82 yards through three preseason games, including five carries for 44 yards Saturday against the Chargers.

Smith is starting to emerge as the No. 2 running back Rashard Mendenhall.

"I’ve put some good stuff out there," Smith said, per NFL.com. "I’ve been putting in work. There’s no surprise in me. I’ve been here the whole offseason. I’ve been lifting. (Running backs) coach Stump (Mitchell) has been coaching me up great telling me to be patient and patient, and it’s finally paying off.

"I’m being patient and now I have to take it to the next step."

Rashard Mendenhall has injured knee

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/25/2013) Cardinals running back Rashard Mendenhall left the team's preseason game Saturday night vs. the Chargers with a right knee injury, according to the official team site, but it does not appear to be serious. He was spotted walking during the game and didn't receive treatment after the game according to the Arizona Republic

The news isn't as positive for guard Jonathan Cooper, who the Cards took with a first-round pick. He broke his leg and could miss the entire season. That sends the Arizona offensive line back to where it was last year in terms of ability to block for the running backs.

Mendenhall played fairly well against the Bolts, totaling 47 yards on six carries.

Alfonso Smith is currently working as the No. 2 running back behind Mendenhall and would conceivably get playing time if Mendenhall were sidelined.

Rashard Mendenhall looking sharp

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8/17/2013) Veteran running back Rashard Mendenhall did nothing Saturday to hurt his status as the Cardinals' featured back. He rushed for 32 yards on seven carries in the first half against the Cowboys and is likely done for the day as Alfonso Smith is getting reps.

Cardinals reserves put in work in preseason opener

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8/10/2013) With both Ryan Williams and Rashard Mendenhall out for Friday's preseason opener against the Packers, the Cardinals had plenty of opportunities to put the bottom half of their depth chart to work. Stepfan Taylor and Alfonso Smith received almost all of the work at running back in the game.

Taylor was the more impressive of the two runners, as he led the team with 64 rushing yards. He also got the bulk of the work, running the ball 20 times while being targeted once in the passing game. Smith started the game but was ineffective, rushing for just 21 yards on 12 carries.

Smith and Taylor are battling for the possible third running back spot on the depth chart.

Rashard Mendenhall joins Ryan Williams on sideline

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/4/2013) Cardinals running back Rashard Mendenhall joined teammate Ryan Williams on the injury list Saturday when he was held out of practice with knee tendinitis according to the Arizona Republic. Coach Bruce Arians doesn't consider the issue serious and says Mendenhall will be back Monday.

Of course, Arians said last week he expected Williams in action soon and he's on crutches. A knee issue that required a doctor's visit has kept him out of action. He's unlikely to play in the Cardinals' first preseason game.

Rookies Stepfan Taylor and Andre Ellington along with veteran Alfonso Smith are taking reps in their place.
