Chargers list 16 players on Week 6 injury report

(10/10/2014) The Chargers listed 16 players on their final injury report leading up to Week 6 at Oakland. Running backs Donald Brown (concussion) and Ryan Mathews (knee), along with linebacker Manti Te'o (foot) and cornerback Shareece Wright (knee) were ruled out for Sunday.

Deemed questionable were the following players: wide receiver Malcom Floyd (calf), tackle D.J. Fluker (ankle), outside linebackers Jarret Johnson (back, ankle) and Cordarro Law (ankle), offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger (back), safety Darrell Stuckey (quad) and linebacker Reggie Walker (ankle).

Wide receiver Keenan Allen (quad), outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu (hamstring) and Dwight Freeney (knee), inside linebacker Donald Butler (shoulder) and tight end David Johnson (knee, shoulder) were the only players ruled probable for the game.

Donald Butler, Malcom Floyd, Ladarius Green, Jarret Johnson, Cordarro Law and Jason Verrett are all active for the game. All six entered considered probable, so their availability shouldn't come as a surprise. 


Chargers release final Week 5 injury report

(10/3/2014) The Chargers listed three players as questionable to play in Week 5 on Friday's final injury report, including linebacker Dwight Freeney (knee), defensive tackle Corey Liuget (concussion) and tight end David Johnson (shoudler).

Freeney didn't practice Thursday but was able to work in limited fashion on Wednesday and Friday. Johnson and Liuget returned to a full practice Friday.

The Chargers listed five players as probable to face the Jets in Week 5, including tight end Ladarius Green (hamstring), cornerback Jason Verrett (hamstring) and linebackers Donald Butler (shoulder), Jarret Johnson (shoulder) and Cordarro Law (ankle).

The following players have been ruled out for Week 5 action: running back Ryan Mathews (knee), offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger (back), cornerback Shareece Wright (knee) and linebackers Manti Te'o (foot), Jeremiah Attaochu (hamstring) and Reggie Walker (ankle).


Chargers DST shows promise

(9/9/2014) The Chargers DST showed big-play potential in Monday's 18-17 loss at Arizona.

Linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu blocked a punt and had a blindside strip-sack of Philip Rivers, with linebacker Dwight Freeney recovering. Safety Marcus Gilchrist jarred the ball loose from running back Andre Ellington, with linebacker Donald Butler recovering. Attaochu and defensive end Corey Liuget each finished with one sack.

The Chargers DST plays the Seahawks in Week 2.

(3/2/2014) Chargers middle linebacker Donald Butler, who just signed a multiyear contract to stay with the team, has missed 24 of a possible 64 games in his four-year career. A groin injury kept him out of four games each of the past two seasons.

“My biggest thing is I need to be on the field for all 16 games,” Butler said, per ESPN.com. “Obviously, the last two years, both years, I missed four games because of the same injury. To me, that’s unacceptable.

“You get paid to play all 16 games, and so my biggest thing is now I fully understand what I have to do this offseason to make sure that, come the regular season, I’m ready to go -- and that’s all 16 games, along with the playoff run we intend to make.”

Butler, 25, wrote on Friday "feeling blessed" and the "deal is done." He was scheduled to be a free agent this offseason. 

Butler had 84 tackles with just a half-sack and one interception in 13 games last year. His sack total was the lowest of his career.

(2/21/2014) Free-agent-to-be linebacker Donald Butler might not be a free agent at all if the Chargers can help it. The team views him as a leader and someone they'd like to bring back, general manager Tom Telesco told U-T San Diego

"He's our starting Mike linebacker, and he played at a pretty good level this year," Telesco said. "I thought he played really well in the playoffs. He's young. I think his game is still continuing to improve. He's a guy we'd love to have back, and hopefully, he feels the same."

The team might have to use the franchise tag on him if they don't have a deal done before the start of free agency, though that could be tough on them given their limited salary cap space.

Brown, whose deal runs out in March, was moderately productive in 2013. He recorded 84 tackles, but managed just a half-sack and one interception. His sack total was the lowest of his career.

Chargers DST can't get off the field

(1/12/2014) Despite losing several players to injury, the Chargers DST did not get blown away by the Broncos' top-ranked offense in the 24-17 playoff loss at Denver. But San Diego could not get its defense off the field.

Denver converted 9 of 13 third downs and controlled the ball for more than 35 minutes. 

The Chargers DST forced two turnovers, cornerback Richard Marshall recovering tight end Julius Thomas' fumble and linebacker Donald Butler intercepting a deflected pass in the end zone. The unit produced no sacks.

Butler picked off Eli Manning for his first interception of the year. The Chargers would score on the ensuing drive. Butler finished the game with five total tackles (three solo) in a 37-14 victory.

The others are end Lawrence Guy (toe), free safety Eric Weddle (toe) and linebacker Jarret Johnson (hamstring), all of whom are probable.

(10/28/2013) Chargers inside linebacker Donald Butler was unable to practice Monday due to a lingering groin injury, reports the Union-Tribune. The co-captain has missed the past two games and is in jeopardy of missing Sunday's visit to Washington.

"I'm taking it one day at a time," Butler said, per the paper. "I'm not getting too far ahead of myself. I feel better every day since I started resting it and it's gotten stronger every day. One day at a time."

(10/15/2013) The Chargers DST, which came in as the second-worst Fantasy unit, put together a stunning performance Monday night without starting linebackers Donald Butler and Jarret Johnson. The defense held the Colts to 267 total yards and 2-of-10 third-down conversions.

San Diego won 19-9, marking the first time Andrew Luck did not account for a touchdown this season.

Cornerback Derek Cox tied for the team lead with five tackles and created the game's only turnover when he intercepted Luck late in the fourth quarter. The pass was high and deflected off Reggie Wayne's hand. Defensive end Kendall Reyes had a 9-yard sack.

The rejuvenated Chargers DST could have another strong outing Week 7 at Jacksonville.
