News: The Steelers announced Thursday quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will start Week 14 vs. San Diego after missing three games with shoulder and rib injuries. He has been above the line in all areas, coach Mike Tomlin said, per the team's official website. Really, the only question we cant answer is taking a hit. Obviously that will be answered in the stadium on Sunday. I am extremely comfortable with his ability to work the field both vertically and horizontally. He has great velocity on his ball. Were ready to go. Roethlisberger told reporters Thursday he took 80-90 percent of the first-team snaps in practice, according to the NFL Network. "I felt good," Roethlisberger said. Charlie Batch had started the last two games in Roethlisberger's absence.
Analysis: Batch led the Steelers to a huge win Week 13 against the Ravens, but it's not like he put up great numbers in his two starts. Roethlisberger was going to start as soon as he was healthy enough and that's going to happen Week 14. Make sure to drop Batch off all Fantasy rosters.
News: ESPN reports Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who has been sidelined the last three games due to shoulder and rib injuries, hopes to return Week 14 vs. San Diego. His strength and range of motion is improving as soreness in his shoulder and chest have diminished. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Steelers are expecting Roethlisberger to return Week 14. However, coach Mike Tomlin was singing a different tune Tuesday. While he said Roethlisberger threw "successfully" Monday, Tomlin said the team is planning for Charlie Batch to make another start Week 14. "Charlie is our guy," Tomlin said. "As we sit here today, we are building our plan around Charlie."
Analysis: You have to believe this will be a situation where the Steelers monitor Roethlisberger during the practice week before making a decision about his Week 14 status. If he is not ready to play, then the Steelers probably will have no hesitation going back to Batch for another week. Batch is coming off a big win Week 13 against the Ravens. He was much better than his Week 12 performance at Cleveland, but Batch still managed just one touchdown. He would be nothing more than a desperation Fantasy start Week 14. The Chargers are yielding 252.7 passing yards and 19.2 Fantasy points per week to quarterbacks. Quarterbacks have totaled 21 passing touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 12 games against San Diego.
News: Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch threw for 276 yards and a touchdown while leading Pittsburgh to a 23-20 win over the Ravens in Week 13. Batch, who was making his second straight start in place of Ben Roethlisberger, completed 25 of his 36 pass attempts, including a 7-yard scoring strike to Heath Miller, which was first first TD pass since 2010. He was also picked off once in the victory, but was able to spread the ball around as he completed a pass to six different receivers.
Analysis: Batch was terrible in his first start last week, but bounced back in a big way against the Ravens. The veteran was able to bring the Steelers back from a 10-point deficit in the second quarter and directed a 61-yard drive in the closing minutes that lead to the game-winning field goal. However, Big Ben is hoping to get back on the field in Week 14 against the Chargers, so Batch's run as a starter could be coming to an end. Even if the 37-year-old did earn another start, he would be worth using in most formats against San Diego.
News: Pittsburgh quarterback Charlie Batch will earn his second straight start in Week 13 against Baltimore after Ben Roethlisberger (shoulder) and Byron Leftwich (ribs) were officially ruled out with injuries. Batch, who lost at Cleveland last Sunday in his first outing since Dec. 24, 2011, will face a Ravens defense that is allowing 259 passing yards per game and an average of 13.3 Fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks.
Analysis: Batch completed just 58.8 percent of his passes last week (20 for 34) as he accounted for 199 yards and three interceptions against the Browns. He also failed to generate a touchdown as the Steelers' only offensive score came on a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Chris Rainey in the second quarter. Fantasy owners should expect Batch to cut down on the turnovers, but he is still not a worthwhile option in nearly all formats for Week 13.
News: Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch will looks to have a tough matchup on tap in Week 13 against the Ravens. Baltimore enters the contest allowing an average of 259 yards and 13.3 Fantasy points to opposing QBs, which ranks fifth overall. Batch, who threw for 199 yards and three interceptions in his start against the Browns last week, has a 50-50 chance to start against the Ravens, ESPN reported Tuesday.
Analysis: Ben Roethlisberger was able to practice on a limited basis Wednesday and will get the start on Sunday, if he is healthy enough to play. However, coach Mike Tomlin already told reporters that he expects Batch to earn another start, which is why the veteran continues to take most of the first-team reps in practice this week. Fantasy owners should keep an eye on the situation moving forward to see who will get the start this week. However, even if Batch gets the nod, he would not be worth starting in most leagues in Week 13.
News: ESPN reports Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who has been sidelined the last two games because of rib and shoulder injuries, has a 50-50 chance to start Week 13 at Baltimore, according to a source. Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday he will "leave door open" for Roethlisberger to play Sunday, but he is preparing for Charlie Batch to start against Baltimore.
Analysis: Roethlisberger said Sunday he is going to try and get ready for Sunday's showdown with Baltimore, but this might not be a decision that is left up to him. The doctors have to clear him to play, so if he is still hurting come Sunday, then Roethlisberger might have to watch Batch run the offense again. Even if Batch starts Sunday, Fantasy owners will want to look toward better options. Batch struggled in a Week 12 loss to Cleveland and we aren't expecting a much-better performance Week 13, even if wide receiver Antonio Brown returns from an ankle injury.
News: Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was probably being generous when he summed up quarterback Charlie Batch's performance Week 12 at Cleveland. "Not good enough," Tomlin said after the game. That's probably an understatement as Batch, who was replacing injured quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich, threw three interceptions in a 20-14 loss. Batch completed 20 of 34 passes for 199 yards and no touchdowns.
Analysis: We weren't expecting a Roethlisberger-type performance from the veteran Batch, but his outing Sunday was pretty pathetic. Then again, the entire Steelers team struggled. They turned the ball over eight times, which included five fumbles. There are reports Roethlisberger could be back Week 13 at Baltimore. Even if Batch has to start again, he is not a recommended Fantasy option.
News: Steelers coach Mike Tomlin updated his quarterback situation Tuesday. He said starter Ben Roethlisberger, who sat out Week 11 with shoulder and rib injuries, is making positive progress, but he is considered doubtful to play Week 12 at Cleveland. Tomlin said Byron Leftwich, who started Week 11 in place of Roethlisberger, is out Sunday because of multiple rib fractures. The Steelers are expected to sign either Brian Hoyer or Mike Kafka, who both worked out Tuesday, but Charlie Batch is expected to start Sunday against the Browns. "We have a great deal of confidence in Charlie," Tomlin said.
Analysis: The early reports are that Roethlisberger might have a chance to return Week 13 at the earliest, so it's not a surprise he is considered doubtful Week 12. It seems the Steelers are moving forward with Batch this week. Fantasy owners should only start Batch in a pinch. Quarterbacks are averaging 264.5 passing yards and 19.4 Fantasy points per week against Cleveland. However, quarterbacks have managed just two passing touchdowns in the last four games against Cleveland. Batch made a start for Pittsburgh in 2011, completing 15 of 22 passes for 208 yards and one interception in a 27-0 win vs. St. Louis. He has plenty of NFL experience, but Batch hasn't been a regular starter since the 2001 season. He has made just seven starts since the 2002 season.
News: CBSSports.com NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports sources said Steelers quarterback Byron Leftwich is expected to be out an extended period after injuries he sustained Week 11 vs. Baltimore. While the timetable is still being examined, the Steelers are expected to work out quarterbacks this week. ESPN reports Leftwich fractured two ribs Sunday. Leftwich was already replacing the injured Ben Roethlisberger, who is week-to-week with shoulder and rib injuries. Sources said Roethlisberger could be back Week 12 at Cleveland, but Week 13 is more likely. Charlie Batch is the only healthy quarterback on the Steelers' roster and might have to start Week 12.
Analysis: Batch made a start for Pittsburgh in 2011, completing 15 of 22 passes for 208 yards and one interception in a 27-0 win vs. St. Louis. He has plenty of NFL experience, but Batch hasn't been a regular starter since the 2001 season. He has made just seven starts since the 2002 season. But he could be pressed into action Sunday against the Browns because of injuries to Roethlisberger and Leftwich. However, since no teams will be on byes Week 12, you should be able to find a better Fantasy option to start. Batch would merely be a desperation play, if he starts Week 12.
News: The Steelers announced Monday that they have signed veteran No. 3 quarterback Charlie Batch to a one-year contract. Batch, 37, a Pittsburgh native, has spent the past eight of his 14 NFL seasons as a Steelers backup.
Analysis: It is believed that the Steelers will sign a quarterback to play behind Ben Roethlisberger and ahead of Charlie Batch. That means Batch is unlikely to make a start like he did last season. Keep him off of Fantasy rosters.
News: Pittsburgh QB Charlie Batch was able to lead to lead the Steelers to their 11th win of the season in Week 16 against the Rams. Batch, who was starting in place of the injured Ben Roethlisberger, completed 15 of his 22 pass attempts for 208 yards in the 27-0 victory. He looked to throw a long touchdown reception to Mike Wallace in the fourth quarter, but the play was overturned by the replay booth. Batch completed a pass to seven different receivers in the win and finished with a QB rating of 79.4.
Analysis: Batch had attempted just two passes this year prior to Saturday's start, but he played pretty well against the Rams. He was able to move the Steelers up and down the field and was used more as a game manger. If Roethlisberger remains sidelined, Batch would make his second straight start in Week 17 against the Browns. However, owners who are still playing in leagues that run through Week 17 should seek a more productive alternative moving forward.
News: Pittsburgh named QB Charlie Batch the starter for Week 16 against St. Louis on Saturday. Batch will earn the start -- his first of the season -- in place of QB Ben Roethlisberger, who is dealing with a troublesome high-ankle sprain and is expected to be used only in an emergency situation.
Analysis: Batch has attempted just two passes this season with both of them coming in Week 14. The veteran is not expected to be a major contributor Saturday as the Steelers will primarily run the ball against the Rams, who own the league's worst rush defense (153.4 yards per game). St. Louis is also yielding an average of just 15.1 Fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks this season. Leave Batch untouched in all formats.
News: Pittsburgh got a scare on Thursday night when Ben Roethlisberger left the contest with an ankle injury. Veteran QB Charlie Batch stepped in and misfired on both his pass attempts. The Steelers ended up running the ball and entered halftime with the lead. Big Ben was able to return to the game, sending Batch back to the bench.
Analysis: The initial report is that Roethlisberger has a high-ankle sprain, which could sideline him for a game. In Week 15 the Steelers face the 49ers, which is a big game for both teams. Batch may be the backup for Big Ben, but he would not be worth adding and starting in any Fantasy league if Roethlisberger is injured significantly. Leave Batch on waivers.
News: Steelers backup QB Byron Leftwich broke his left arm during Saturday's preseason game against Atlanta, coach Mike Tomlin said, meaning that Charlie Batch and Dennis Dixon are the likely Nos. 2 and 3 QBs for much of this season behind starter Ben Roethlisberger. I dont have any additional information, Tomlin said. I am sure its going to be an extended period of time. Leftwich completed 1 of 2 passes for 11 yards and ran one time for 6 yards before getting hurt.
Analysis: Even though Batch moves up the depth chart he still has minimal Fantasy value in the majority of leagues. Ignore him in all formats on Draft Day, and he would only be worth owning if something happened to Roethlisberger.
News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Steelers QB Byron Leftwich will remain the No. 2 QB behind Ben Roethlisberger. The No. 3 QB battle will come down to Dennis Dixon vs. Charlie Batch.
Analysis: Even if Batch is the No. 3 QB he will be limited with his playing time. Ignore him in all leagues on Draft Day.
News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Steelers backup QB Charlie Batch wants to return in 2011. Batch, 36, is the oldest player on the team, and he currently should be considered the No. 3 QB behind Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich. Dennis Dixon is also injured.
Analysis: Batch saved the Steelers' season when Roethlisberger was suspended for the first four games and Leftwich and Dixon were injured. Keep an eye on what happens with him this offseason, but Batch has minimal Fantasy value in the majority of leagues even if he returns as expected.
News: Steelers QB Charlie Batch may have very likely made his last start of the season in Week 4 against Baltimore with Ben Roethlisberger eligible to return from his four-game suspension following the team's bye in Week 5. It wasn't a performance to write home about. He completed 12 of 21 passes for just 141 yards. He did not throw a touchdown pass and was intercepted once in a 17-14 loss.
Analysis: Batch was coming off a surprisingly impressive performance in Week 3 at Tampa Bay, but he was up against a much tougher defense in Week 4 as the Ravens came in ranked No. 1 in the NFL against the pass. As expected, he was under intense pressure all game. He did have some down field attempts, mostly to WR MIke Wallace, but they were broken up by good defensive plays -- including a possible touchdown pass. The Steelers said earlier this year that Roethlisberger would not be guaranteed his starting job upon his return, but just about everybody expects he'll be the quarterback in Week 6. Batch won't be worth owning in Fantasy leagues going forward as a result.
News: After leading the Steelers to a victory in Week 3 against the Bucs, and throwing three touchdowns in the process, Charlie Batch will make his second consecutive start in Week 4 against the Ravens. "Guys have a great deal of confidence in him," coach Mike Tomlin said. "He's simply a man that's taken advantage of an opportunity, and you've got to be happy for him." The Ravens surely won't be happy for Batch as they will be looking to slow him down Sunday. Baltimore has terrorized opposing QBs all season, as it has allowed Fantasy QBs to average just 7.0 points per week, which is the lowest in the NFL.
Analysis: The Ravens have completely shut down QBs like Mark Sanchez and Carson Palmer, who are much better than Batch. In fact, the only QB to throw a TD against the Ravens this season has been Seneca Wallace. Batch did a good job of throwing the deep ball in Week 3 against Tampa Bay, but we expect him to have a much more difficult time in Week 4. If you can, avoid starting Batch in Fantasy.
News: Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said during his Tuesday press conference that QB Charlie Batch will start again in Week 4 against the Ravens after the veteran completed 12 of 17 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns in Week 3 against the Buccaneers.
Analysis: The Ravens rank as the No. 1 overall defense through three games and are also No. 1 against the pass. Thus, the Steelers will be focused on the run this Sunday, especially as Baltimore have been shaky against the ground game, which means Batch won't be relied upon much in Week 4. This will also likely be his final start of the season, as Ben Roethlisberger's suspension is almost up, so continue to ignore Batch in Fantasy play.
News: In Week 3, Charlie Batch made Steelers fans forget the team had quarterback troubles with Ben Roethlisberger serving a four-game suspension. Batch, who was making his first start in place of the injured Dennis Dixon (knee), threw three touchdowns to pace a 38-13 win against the Bucs in Week 3. "These opportunities don't come often right now," the 13-year veteran said Sunday after making his first start in nearly three years. "Everybody knows Ben's the starter. One thing I didn't want to do was be that weak link, to go out there and not be able to provide a spark or put this team in the end zone." Batch was efficient, completing 12 of 17 passes for 186 yards. Most of his yards came on two big plays to Mike Wallace, who caught touchdown passes of 41 and 46 yards in the first half. Hines Ward caught Batch's other touchdown, a 9-yarder right before halftime. Batch also scrambled for 26 yards and threw two interceptions in the win.
Analysis: It didn't seem Batch was headed for a very favorable matchup in Week 3 since Tampa Bay had one of the best pass defenses in the NFL. But Batch did a very good job of throwing the deep ball and that allowed him to rack up most of his yards. "He played like a veteran. ... He didn't blink," coach Mike Tomlin said. "He's been a consummate professional and team player, and good things usually happen for those kind of people." Batch will likely be under center again in Week 4 against the Ravens. However, we don't expect a repeat performance of Week 3 since the Ravens are a much better defense than Tampa Bay. Batch will remain a Fantasy reserve heading into Week 4. However, if he does somehow pull out another victory, then Pittsburgh might think of keeping him under center long-term, even when Big Ben returns.
News: Steelers QB Charlie Batch has three touchdowns in the first half against the Bucs in Week 3. In his first start of the season, he has already completed 11 of 14 passes for 177 yards to go along with the three TDs. He did throw an interception on his first pass attempt of the game.
Analysis: Batch was expected to be a game-manager coming into the game, but he has taken deep shots to WR Mike Wallace that have resulted in two TDs. The third, to Hines Ward, came late in the second quarter. He even has a rush attempt for 24 yards. This performance will give the Steelers food for thought when QB Ben Roethlisberger returns from suspension in two weeks.
News: QB Charlie Batch has a 3-1 record for the Steelers as a fill-in starter during the Ben Roethlisberger era. Batch was named the team's starting QB for Week 3 against the Bucs after Dennis Dixon was ruled out with a knee injury. Roethlisberger also remains out serving his four-game suspension. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians will be able to open the playbook for Batch this Sunday. The 15-year veteran knows Arians' offense inside-out. The playbook was pared down for Dixon in his two starts.
Analysis: The Steelers receivers have been backing this move since coach Mike Tomlin announced it earlier in the week. Batch might be a more polished passer than Dixon, but he still isn't Roethlisberger. The Bucs have been lucky to face some average QBs in the first few weeks of the season, most notably Jake Delhomme and Matt Moore, and Batch falls into that group. However, Tampa Bay lost safety Tanard Jackson (suspension) for the season, so it will be interesting to see how it moves on without him. Batch remains just a desperation Fantasy start for Week 3.
News: According to WEAE radio out of Pittsburgh, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin confirmed Wednesday that QB Charlie Batch will start in Week 3 at Tampa Bay. "This is what you prepare and have to be ready for as a backup. I'll be ready to go," said Batch.
Analysis: Batch, a 13-year veteran, had just 25 passing yards on 5 of 11 passing on Sunday after replacing the injured Dennis Dixon. With Ben Roethlisberger's suspension coming to an end in Week 6 after Pittsburgh's bye and Byron Leftwich on the mend, this might be the only action Batch sees the rest of this season, so continue to ignore him in Fantasy play.
News: Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that QB Charlie Batch is ahead of Byron Leftwich in the race to start Week 3 at Tampa Bay, but that's based on health alone. Previous starter Dennis Dixon has a torn meniscus that will require surgery, meaning that either Leftwich or Batch will start. Were going to go through the week and proceed through the week to see how this thing sorts out. (Batch and Leftwich) are the two candidates," said Tomlin. "Youve got to say that Charlie is in pole position because hes got a clean bill of health at this point. We dont anticipate Byrons health being an issue, but you at least at this point of the week have to acknowledge that could be a factor in terms of how the reps get sorted out and who ultimately plays.
Analysis: Batch had just 25 passing yards on 5 of 11 passing on Sunday after replacing Dixon and will need to improve on those numbers if he wants to keep Leftwich on the bench. With just two games left before Ben Roethlisberger returns from suspension, Batch can continue to be ignored in all Fantasy formats, even if he does end up starting on Sunday.
News: Steelers QB Dennis Dixon has been diagnosed with a torn lateral meniscus in left knee, according to Yahoo! Sports. Dixon was injured in Week 2 at Tennessee. The injury could possibly require arthroscopic surgery to repair the damage, and could sideline him for as long as three to five weeks. The Steelers will have to turn to either Charlie Batch, who replaced Dixon at Tennessee, or Byron Leftwich to replace Dixon in Week 3 at Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Batch finished Week 2 with just 25 passing yards on 5 of 11 passing after replacing Dixon. He had a touchdown pass nullified due to a penalty, but was mostly inefficient. He would not be a very appealing Fantasy option if he were to get the nod against Tampa Bay and is not someone we recommend making a waiver wire claim on at this stage.
News: Steelers QB Dennis Dixon was taken out of his Week 2 game at Tennessee in the second quarter after suffering a knee injury. He was replaced by veteran backup Charlie Batch. Batch finished the game with just 25 passing yards on 5 of 11 passing. He had a touchdown pass nullified due to a penalty.
Analysis: Coach Mike Tomlin said after the game that Dixon's knee will be evaluated during the week, but that early indications are that it's not a serious injury. "He could have come back in and handed the ball off to finish the game," Tomlin said. Batch would not be a recommended starter in Fantasy even if he were to get the start, however, and he can be left on the waiver wire in just about every Fantasy format.
News: QB Dennis Dixon will start for the Steelers in their season opener Sunday against Atlanta. Coach Mike Tomlin chose the third-year player Monday over longtime backup Charlie Batch. Dixon and Batch are the lone two healthy quarterbacks eligible to play. Ben Roethlisberger is serving his four-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, while Byron Leftwich is out indefinitely with a sprained left knee ligament. Dixon has started one NFL game, an overtime loss in Baltimore last season in which he threw for a touchdown and run for another.
Analysis: Batch could still see action against the Falcons, but he's not expected to do much even if he plays. Ignore Batch in all leagues in Week 1 against Atlanta since he's now the No. 2 QB behind Dixon.
News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Charlie Batch might end up starting in Week 1 against Atlanta now that Byron Leftwich (knee) is out. Ben Roethlisberger is suspended for the first four games of the season, and coach Mike Tomlin might opt for the veteran in Batch over the inexperienced Dennis Dixon. "You look back, we had three solid guys who were able to go in, step in, if needed," Batch said. "Now we're down to two. Over the weekend, they'll determine what's going to happen. Either way, I'll be ready to go. I feel good, I really do. Did the reps at training camp happen? No, but we're not in training camp anymore. Right now we're getting ready for Atlanta and we have the weekend and another seven days to get ready for them. At that point, whatever happens, happens. But either way, over this weekend, we'll start the preparation of getting the game plan together. I'll be ready to go either way."
Analysis: Batch, 35, has started four games with the Steelers and won three of them. He filled in for an injured Roethlisberger twice in 2005, and the Steelers won at Green Bay and at home against Cleveland. Given a week's notice to get ready when Roethlisberger had his appendix removed in '06, Batch started the opener, and the Steelers beat Miami. His last start came at Baltimore in the '07 season finale, which the Steelers lost, 27-21. Batch, if named the starter, would only have minimal Fantasy value for the first four games of the season. He's not worth drafting in the majority of leagues this year.
News: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Thursday that Steelers coach Mike Tomlin declined to name a No. 1 QB following the conclusion of offseason practices since Ben Roethlisberger will open the season out with a suspension for at least the first four games. But Tomlin said the Steelers will go into training camp with the same rotation at quarterback that they have had since late April, which means Byron Leftwich will begin as the starter ahead of Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch. "I think how we distributed (repetitions) is an indication of our mindset at this juncture," Tomlin said. The paper reports that it has been clear for awhile that the job is Leftwich's to lose despite Tomlin saying during minicamp that the competition would be open.
Analysis: At this point we expect Leftwich to be the starter in Week 1 as well and to remain there so long as he doesn't commit many errors. But none of the Steelers' quarterbacks behind Roethlisberger have much Fantasy value. At the very best, consider the Steelers starter, whether it's Leftwich, Dixon or Batch, a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB on Draft Day worth a late-round pick in deep leagues.
News: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger worked with the first team during Wednesday's practice. Byron Leftwich worked with the second team, and Dennis Dixon worked with the third-team offense. "Ben's back in the building, so we put him in the huddle to get him acclimated with the guys that he usually works with," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "What we want to do is give Ben quality reps so he can get reacclimated and improve and work on his game." Roethlisberger returned to practice Tuesday for the first time since he was suspended six games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. The suspension, which allows Roethlisberger to participate in practices and preseason games, can be reduced to the first four regular-season games. In terms of his QB rotation, Tomlin said Dixon will continue to split a share of the repetitions because he is young and needs the work. If there is a reduction, Tomlin said it will come at the expense of Leftwich or veteran Charlie Batch.
Analysis: Batch will have the chance to compete for the starting job, but we expect the Steelers to leave him in a backup role behind Dixon and Leftwich while Roethlisberger is out. Don't plan on drafting Batch in any leagues even if the Steelers do decide to make him the starter. He won't post enough quality stats where you can trust him to lead your Fantasy team.
News:Byron Leftwich is handling nearly all of the first-team snaps in practice, a strong indicator he will be the starter while Roethlisberger serves his six-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch are also presumably still in the running for the job, but with the Steelers practicing only three days a week though June 10, Tomlin seemingly would give far more work to Dixon or Batch if either figured to go into camp as the designated replacement.
Analysis: At this point it's unlikely that Batch will see regular playing time this season. He's not worth drafting in Fantasy play.
News: The Steelers opened OTA workouts Tuesday with QB Byron Leftwich working with the first-team offense, just like he did in mini-camp three weeks ago. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin recently stated that he would know who is starting QB would be before training camp. It appears it will be Leftwich. Dennis Dixon is at No. 2, and Charlie Batch is No. 3. "I really don't believe it's an effective approach to go in with a pure, open quarterback competition," Tomlin said. "There simply aren't enough snaps to go around. We'll go in with a pecking order, if you will, and the opportunities to show what you're capable of will be based on that pecking order. All three guys will be given an opportunity, but not an equal opportunity. That's just the nature of this game, of this business." As expected, QB Ben Roethlisberger was a no-show. He hasn't been given permission by the league to resume football activities.
Analysis: Dixon could still impress the coaching staff this offseason and in training camp, but we expect Leftwich to be the starter in Week 1. But none of the three quarterbacks have much Fantasy value even though they will start the first four games of the season. At best, consider the Steelers starter, whether it's Leftwich, Dixon or Batch, a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB on Draft Day, and the winner of the battle should only be drafted with a late-round pick in deep leagues.
News: Steelers coach Mike Tomlin told the team's official website that he will know the starting QB once training camp starts. But that doesn't mean Tomlin will announce who among Byron Leftwich, Charlie Batch and Dennis Dixon will start the season with Ben Roethlisberger suspended for six games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. Roethlisberger's suspension can be reduced for four games, but the Steelers still need a starter for Week 1. "It's not a three-man quarterback competition at this point," Tomlin said. "We know what all three men are capable of doing. All three men, at different points in time, have benefited us and helped us win football games or played winning football. We know what we're working with. We're going to spend the rest of this offseason teaching, re-acclimating in some cases as with Byron Leftwich and then we're going to make decisions and move forward."
Analysis: Leftwich opened the first minicamp in early May taking snaps with the first team, but Tomlin said that was to help Leftwich get reacquainted with the offense after spending last season with Tampa Bay (ESPN reported in mid-May that it's Leftwich's job to lose). We think the QB battle will be between Leftwich and Dixon, but none of the three quarterbacks have much Fantasy value even though they will start the first four games of the season. At best, consider the Steelers starter, whether it's Leftwich, Dixon or Batch, a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB on Draft Day, and the winner of the battle should only be drafted with a late-round pick in deep leagues.
News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports with Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger away from minicamp this past weekend to attend a clinic to evaluate his behavior as part of his suspension, coach Mike Tomlin went about finding his replacement for at least the first four games of the season. Byron Leftwich took snaps with the first team for all five minicamp practices, with Dennis Dixon second and Charlie Batch third. Tomlin said all three are in the running, but he started with Leftwich because it was his first practices back with them after spending the past season with Tampa Bay. "I wanted to give him as many opportunities to reacquaint him to this environment, some of the people that he works with in that group and so forth," Tomlin said. "The other guys will be given opportunities, no question. Byron is a sharp guy. He has reacquainted himself to our environment rather quickly, interacting with teammates, understanding the offensive concepts, being able to communicate those things. He's doing a nice job, as are the other guys. We got a long process here for the rest of the offseason. We're looking forward to watching those guys work and find rhythm with receivers and so forth, and just continuing to grow."
Analysis: The competition will likely last well into training camp as all three quarterbacks battle for the starting spot until Roethlisberger returns, which would be in Week 6 at the earliest since the Steelers are off in Week 5. None of these quarterbacks are worth drafting in the majority of leagues, but the starter should be considered a low-end No. 2 option in deeper formats.
News: Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger was suspended for six games without pay Wednesday for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy and ordered to undergo behavioral evaluation. Commissioner Roger Goodell made the announcement a week after prosecutors decided not to charge Roethlisberger after a 20-year-old college student accused him of sexually assaulting her in a Georgia nightclub in March. Goodell said the league's conduct policy gave him the right to impose discipline. Roethlisberger must undergo a "comprehensive behavioral evaluation by medical professionals" and may not attend any team offseason activities until that evaluation is completed. The suspension could be reduced to four games for good behavior. Sitting out all six games would cost him an estimated $2.8 million. With Roethlisberger out, the Steelers plan to have Dennis Dixon and Byron Leftwich compete for the starting job. Charlie Batch is also on the roster.
News:Charlie Batch has signed a two-year contract to remain with the Steelers as a backup QB. The 35-year-old Batch has been under contract with the Steelers for eight seasons, although he sat out 2004 and 2008 with injuries. He has thrown only two passes since 2007, and 135 overall during his time with Pittsburgh. A former starter for the Lions, Batch is expected to compete with Dennis Dixon to be the backup QB. Dixon started one game when Ben Roethlisberger was hurt last season and became the No. 2 QB after Batch broke his left wrist Nov. 22 in Kansas City. Batch grew up in suburban Pittsburgh and is the team's player representative.
Analysis: Batch and Dixon have minimal Fantasy value as long as Big Ben is healthy and active. Ignore Batch and Dixon in all leagues on Draft Day.
News: The Steelers have announced the following players as inactive for Week 17 at Miami: WR Joey Galloway, DL Brett Keisel, DL Ra'Shon Harris, DB Trae Williams, QB Charlie Batch and DB Troy Polamalu.
Analysis: Polamalu's knee is still bothering him, so be sure to continue to bench him in IDP leagues. The rest of these guys have no Fantasy value.
News: The Steelers listed the following players as inactive for Week 16 against Baltimore: DB Troy Polamalu, DB Keenan Lewis, QB Charlie Batch, WR Joey Galloway, DL Ra'Shon Harris and RB Carey Davis.
Analysis: Outside of Polamalu, no players listed here have any Fantasy appeal. Leave them reserved in all leagues through the remainder of the season.
News: The Steelers' list of inactives for Week 15 against the Packers includes WR Limas Sweed, QB Charlie Batch, DB Keenan Lewis, DL Ra'Shon Harris and DL Nick Eason.
Analysis: None of these players contributes enough statistically to have significant Fantasy appeal.
News: Steelers QB Charlie Batch, CB Keenan Lewis, RB Carey Davis, SS Troy Polamalu, DT Ra'Shon Harris and DE Nick Eason have been listed as inactive for the team's Week 14 game at Cleveland.
Analysis: Polamalu is the only played listed that is relevant in Fantasy play. The rest of these players can be left on waivers.
News: Quarterback Tyler Palko was released by the Steelers on Wednesday. Charlie Batch will be the No. 3 quarterback in Cleveland as his broken left wrist continues to heal.
Analysis: Neither quarterback should be owned in Fantasy play at this point.
News: Pittsburgh QB Charlie Batch (wrist) did not participate in the walkthrough on Monday for the Thursday night game at Cleveland in Week 14.
Analysis: Batch had his chance to start in Week 12 against the Ravens, but he was injured late in the game against Kansas City in Week 11 and now could be out for the rest of the season. Ignore Batch in Fantasy until further notice.
News: Pittsburgh has listed the following players as inactive for Week 13 at home against Oakland: QB Charlie Batch, DB Troy Polamalu, DL Travis Kirschke, QB Tyler Palko (3rd QB), DL Ra'Shon Harris and DB Keenan Lewis.
Analysis: Polamalu was expected to miss at least a month after banging up his knee in mid-November against the Bengals. He could be ready to play by Week 14, but he is not going to take the field in Week 13. Polamalu is a viable Fantasy start when healthy. The rest of the players listed above have almost zero Fantasy value at this time.
News: Steelers QB Charlie Batch (left wrist) has been ruled out for Week 13 vs. Oakland. It will be the second straight game he is inactive.
Analysis: Batch had his chance to start in Week 12 against the Ravens, but he was injured late in the game against Kansas City in Week 11 and now could be out for the rest of the season. Ignore Batch in Fantasy until further notice.
News: The Steelers have announced the following players as inactive for Week 12 at Baltimore: QB Ben Roethlisberger, QB Charlie Batch, DB Keenan Lewis, DB Troy Polamalu, DL Ra'Shon Harris and DL Nick Eason.
Analysis: Roethlisberger is the only offensive player on this list with any Fantasy value, and had already been declared out earlier this week, so he should be on your bench at this point. Polamalu is a solid IDP option when healthy, but he was also ruled out before Sunday. Continue to ignore all the other guys in Fantasy play.
News: Planning to pick up Steelers backup QB Charlie Batch in case starter Ben Roethlisberger can't play in Week 12? Forget it -- Batch injured his left wrist after replacing Roethlisberger during an overtime loss at Kansas City in Week 12 and could miss the rest of the regular season. Batch was hurt despite playing only four plays in the Steelers' 27-24 loss - his first game action since 2007. He is expected to undergo surgery later this week to repair the wrist and miss approximately six weeks. Batch sat out last season with a broken collarbone.
Analysis: Roethlisberger left with concussion-like symptoms when his head struck Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson's knee while he was being dropped for a 1-yard loss in overtime. Roethlisberger was examined Monday and his status for Sunday night's game in Baltimore is uncertain. If Roethlisberger can't play, third-string QB Dennis Dixon would get the nod. Keep Batch on waivers as his golden opportunity to play has taken a tremendous blow.
News: Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger threw for 398 yards and three touchdowns in a Week 11 overtime loss at Kansas City, leaving the game in the overtime session after taking a knee to the helmet. He completed 32 of 42 passes, but was intercepted twice. Charlie Batch replaced Roethlisberger and completed 1 of 2 passes for 17 yards.
Analysis: Roethlisberger appeared to be very shaken up after the play and he received medical attention on the field for several minutes before being removed from the game. He did remain on the sideline, which is a good sign, but a head injury could possibly be serious enough to make him miss some game action. Monitor this closely leading up to Week 12 at Baltimore. Batch would be a very low-end replacement option if he has to start.
News: Pittsburgh had several players not factor into the offense in the Week 10 win against Cincinnati. Steelers WR Limas Sweed, WR Stefan Logan, TE David Johnson and QB Charlie Batch all dressed but did not record an offensive stat against the Bengals.
Analysis: It's safe to ignore all these players for Week 11 at Kansas City. They do not play enough or record enough offensive production to use against the Chiefs.
News: Pittsburgh had several players not factor into the offense in the Week 9 win at Denver on Monday night. Steelers WR Limas Sweed, TE Matt Spaeth, FB Carey Davis and TE David Johnson all played but did not stat. Backup QB Charlie Batch did not play.
Analysis: None of the players on this list are expected to have much Fantasy appeal this season. Leave them on the waiver wire in all leagues for Week 10 against the Bengals.
News:Charlie Batch, Stefan Logan, Shaun McDonald and TE Matt Spaeth did not record an offensive statistic in Week 7 against the Vikings.
Analysis: The Steelers are on bye in Week 8 and play in Week 9 at Denver.None of the players listed are expected to have any real Fantasy appeal. Leave them on waivers until further notice.
News:Charlie Batch, David Johnson, Stefan Logan, Shaun McDonald and M Spaeth did not record an offensive statistic in Week 6 against Cleveland.
Analysis: None of the players listed are expected to have any real Fantasy appeal. Leave them on waivers until further notice.
News: Pittsburgh TE Matt Spaeth saw a start in Week 5 in a win over the Lions but did not make any catches. Also playing in the game but not making any statistics were: WR Limas Sweed, RB Carey Davis and TE David Johnson. Backup QB Charlie Batch did not play.
Analysis: These players hardly ever do enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers for now; the Steelers play Cleveland Week 6.
News: Steelers WR/KR Stefan Logan, TE Matt Spaeth, RBs Isaac Redman and Carey Davis, WR Shaun McDonald and QB Charlie Batch all dressed and were active but didn't record an offensive statistic Week 4 vs. the Chargers
Analysis: These players hardly never do enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers for now; the Steelers play at the Lions in Week 5.
News: Steelers TE David Johnson, RB Stefan Logan and QB Charlie Batch didn't record offensive statistics Week 3 at Cincinnati.
Analysis: These players never do enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers.
News: Steelers RB Stefan Logan, RB Frank Summers, WR Shaun McDonald, TE David Johnson and QB Charlie Batch didn't record offensive statistics Week 2 at Chicago.
Analysis: None of these players ever does enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers.
News: Steelers RB Stefan Logan, TE Matt Spaeth, RB Frank Summers, TE David Johnson and QB Charlie Batch all dressed but failed to record an offensive stat Week 1 against the Titans.
Analysis: Most of these players are reserves or special teams contributors for the Steelers. Until that changes, they have little to no Fantasy appeal heading into Week 2 against the Bears.
News: Pittsburgh QB Dennis Dixon got the start in Saturday's preseason loss against the Redskins. Dixon, competing with Charlie Bath for the backup job behind Ben Roethlisberger, was clearly the best QB for the Steelers in the game as he went 8 of 16 for 68 yards. He also ran three times for 20 yards. Batch came on next and went 5 of 14 for 63 yards.
Analysis: Dixon and Batch will continue to vie for the job throughout training camp, but neither has any Fantasy value unless Big Ben gets hurt. Ignore Dixon and Batch on Draft Day in all leagues.
News: Steelers QB Dennis Dixon is making a strong case to be the No. 2 quarterback, ahead of Charlie Batch, behind Ben Roethlisberger. Dixon has been accurate and knows the offense better after years as a spread QB.
Analysis: Dixon and Batch will continue to vie for the job throughout training camp, but neither has any Fantasy value unless Big Ben gets hurt. Ignore Dixon and Batch on Draft Day in all leagues.
News: Backup quarterback Charlie Batch returned to the Steelers by signing an $895,000, one-year contract that includes a $50,000 signing bonus. The move was expected because Batch has been working out with the Steelers since missing last season with a broken right collarbone. Byron Leftwich replaced Batch as Ben Roethlisberger's backup, but he signed a two-year deal with Tampa Bay. Batch has been the Steelers' primary backup since signing with the Steelers in 2002. He has played in 22 games since then, starting four times.
Analysis: Batch won't sniff the field unless Ben Roethlisberger is hurt. But after last season, chances are we'll see Batch at some point quarterbacking the Steelers. Ultimately, he's not worth a draft pick in any league.
News: The Steelers have decided to place backup QB Charlie Batch on Injured Reserve with a broken collarbone, ending his season, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. That means that veteran passer Byron Leftwich will have a job this year as the backup quarterback to Ben Roethlisberger.
Analysis: Batch shouldn't be owned in any league since he's done for the season. Leftwich is worth a look only if Ben Roethlisberger were to miss significant playing time, and keep in mind that Roethlisberger has never played a full 16-game slate (he would have last year if not for sitting in Week 17). Leftwich is someone you can pick up off the waiver wire later on this year if necessary.
News: The Beaver County Times reports Steelers QB Charlie Batch, who is out with a broken collarbone suffered in an Aug. 8 preseason game, can either be placed on the season-ending injured reserve list, agree to an injury settlement and be cut or the Steelers can keep him on the active roster. Typically, it takes four-to-six weeks for a broken collarbone to heal. Currently, the Steelers have five quarterbacks: starter Ben Roethlisberger; backup Byron Leftwich, who was signed after Batch was hurt; rookie Dennis Dixon, a fifth-round draft pick; Mike Potts, an undrafted rookie free agent; and Batch. The Steelers will probably keep three: Roethlisberger, Leftwich and Dixon, who would likely be snatched away if placed on the practice squad. That could leave Batch without a team.
Analysis: Keep an eye on what happens with Batch, but he has minimal Fantasy value in 2008 and should not be drafted in any leagues.
News: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Steelers QB Charlie Batch had surgery Monday to repair the fractured collarbone he suffered in the preseason win over Philadelphia. Batch is expected to be out four to six weeks.
Analysis: Batch could be out for more than six weeks, and has now been replaced by Byron Leftwich. When Batch returns, he might be out of a job. Keep an eye on what develops, but don't plan on drafting Batch in any leagues.
News:The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting the Steelers are interested in signing either Daunte Culpepper or Byron Leftwich to back up Ben Roethlisberger after Charlie Batch was injured Friday night. Batch, who suffered a broken right collarbone in Friday's 16-10 exhibition victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, is expected to be out four to six weeks, according to coach Mike Tomlin. That leaves just rookies Dennis Dixon and Mike Potts on the roster to be the backups if they don't sign another. And Roethlisberger, who was sacked 93 times the past two years, takes more hits than almost any passer in the NFL.
Analysis: The backup quarterback position is crucial for the Steelers and whoever wins the job, be it from outside the organization or one of the rookies, would be a waiver-wire pick up should Roethlisberger injure himself at any point.
News: Pittsburgh Steelers backup quarterback Charlie Batch broke his right collarbone and left the team's preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday night. It's unclear how Batch was hurt, but the injury may have occurred on a broken play midway through the second quarter. Batch attempted to hand off to Mewelde Moore, who appeared to miss his assignment prompting Batch to scramble for six yards off left tackle. Batch remained in the game but left after handing off to Gary Russell on the next play with 6:13 left in the half. It was not immediately clear how long Batch will be sidelined.
Analysis: This news comes as more of a downer to Batch than Fantasy owners. Batch was the second stringer behind Ben Roethlisberger but will now probably miss a good chunk of the season. Broken collarbones are no light matter. He had minimal Fantasy value to begin with, but now isn't someone to consider at all.

News: Pittsburgh QB Charlie Batch spent 2007 as the backup to starter Ben Roethlisberger and played sparingly. Batch appeared in seven games with one start, which was the season finale against Baltimore. He finished the season with 232 yards passing, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
Analysis: Batch will likely be the No. 2 quarterback again for the Steelers. He has minimal Fantasy value unless something happens to Roethlisberger. Don't plan on drafting Batch in the majority of leagues in 2008 and only add him if Big Ben were to get hurt.
News: Steelers backup QB Charlie Batch, starting in place of Ben Roethlisberger, threw for 218 yards and two touchdown passes Week 17. However, he completed only 16 of 31 passes and tossed two interceptions. He also lost a yard on one carry.
Analysis: Batch clearly isn't an NFL starter, though he provides the Steelers with a decent veteran backup for Roethlisberger. Expect Roethlisberger to return in the playoffs and Batch to go undrafted in 2008.
News: Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is listed as inactive for Week 17 at Baltimore. Roethlisbeger has been dealing with an injured ankle, and the Steelers want to rest him to make sure he's healthy for the playoffs.
Analysis: Big Ben will be fine for the playoffs. But for Week 17, keep him reserved in all leagues. Charlie Batch will start for the Steelers.
News: Steelers QB Charlie Batch took the snaps with the starters Thursday and is expected to start at quarterback for the fourth time in the last three seasons Week 17 at Baltimore. An ankle injury has limited starter Ben Roethlisberger in practice this week.
Analysis: Batch was 2-0 in 2005 and 1-0 last season, but he hasn't started since the 2006 opener against Miami -- when Roethlisberger sat out after having his appendix removed four days before. The veteran might make for a sneaky good start in Fantasy this week, but you'll need a lot of courage to take a chance on him in your championship game.
News: Steelers QB Charlie Batch entered the game Week 16 against the Rams late in the fourth quarter to kneel down the ball and run out the clock during a 41-24 win. Officially, he attempted three rushes for minus-2 yards.
Analysis: Batch came into the game because Ben Roethlisberger was a little knicked up because of a few hits, but it was nothing serious. Batch will only become a viable Fantasy option when Big Ben goes down with an injury. Batch has no Fantasy value at this time.
News: Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger missed practice again Thursday because of a sore right shoulder, with Charlie Batch running the starting offense in his place. On Tuesday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Roethlisberger's problem wasn't a major one. "I don't want to make more out of it than what it is," Tomlin said. The Steelers haven't updated Roethlisberger's condition since then. Tomlin said Roethlisberger's status would be updated Friday.
Analysis: Batch hasn't started a game since the 2006 opener, when he threw three touchdown passes in a 28-17 victory over Miami. Roethlisberger, who missed that game after having appendicitis, has started each of the Steelers' 28 games since then. Batch is 1-for-5 for 14 yards and one interception in 2007. If he starts on Sunday, he would be nothing more than a possible desperation Fantasy QB.
News: Steelers TE Matt Spaeth, TE Jon Dekker, WR Willie Reid, RB Carey Davis and QB Charlie Batch didn't record statistics Week 14 against the Bengals.
Analysis: None of these players contributes enough statistically to have value in Fantasy. Leave all on waivers for Week 14 at New England.
News: Steelers TE Matt Spaeth and QB Charlie Batch didn't record statistics Week 12 against the Dolphins.
Analysis: Barring an injury, neither player does enough statistically to have value in Fantasy. Leave both on waivers for Week 13 against the Bengals.
News: Steelers RB Dan Kreider, WR Nate Washington and QB Charlie Batch all dressed, but failed to record an offensive stat Week 11 against the Jets.
Analysis: All of these players are backups for the Steelers and won't factor much into the offensive gameplan at this time. Ignore them heading into Week 12 against the Dolphins.
News: Steelers QB Charlie Batch did not play Sunday against the Browns.
Analysis: Batch should only be used in Week 11 at the Jets or any week if something happens to Ben Roethlisberger. For now, keep Batch reserved in all leagues.
News: Steelers QB Charlie Batch unexpectedly saw some time under center in a lopsided 38-7 win over the visiting Ravens in Week 9. He played a few snaps in the third quarter after starter Ben Roethlisberger left briefly because of a hip injury and played a few more in the fourth with the game well in hand. He completed only one of five passes for 14 yards, tossing an interception in the process.
Analysis: Batch is only worth a look in the deepest of Fantasy leagues and as a reserve for really, really cautious owners of starter Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers host the Browns in Week 10.
News: Steelers backup QB Charlie Batch dressed for Week 8 at the Bengals, but he did not get into the game.
Analysis: Batch is only worth a look in the deepest of Fantasy leagues and as a reserve for really, really cautious owners of starter Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers play Baltimore in Week 9.
News: Backup QB Charlie Batch dressed for Week 7 at Denver, but he did not get into the game.
Analysis: Batch is only worth a look in the deepest of Fantasy leagues and as a reserve for really, really cautious owners of starter Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers play at Cincinnati in Week 8.
News: Steelers backup QB Charlie Batch came on late with the game out of reach against Seattle and had two carries for minus-1 yard.
Analysis: Batch has no Fantasy value unless something were to happen to Ben Roethlisberger. Do not worry about adding him in your leagues.
News: Steelers WR Cedrick Wilson, TE Jurame Tuman, RB Carey Davis, RB Dan Kreider and QB Charlie Batch didn't record meaningful statistics Week 4 at the Cardinals.
Analysis: These players are all either backups or blockers and don't contribute anything Fantasy-wise. Keep them on the waiver wire for Week 5 against the Seahawks.
News: The following Steelers put up the following stats vs. San Francisco in their Week 3 win: FB Carey Davis (nine receiving yards), backup QB Charlie Batch (1 carry, no yards) and WR Cedrick Wilson (one carry, no yards).
Analysis: None of these players be considered for standard Fantasy use in Week 4 when the Steelers play at Arizona.
News: The following Steelers put up the following stats vs. Buffalo in their Week 2 win: RB Najeh Davenport (46 rush yards, 11 receiving yards), FB Carey Davis (four rush yards, one catch for no yards), backup QB Charlie Batch (minus-2 rush yards), TE Heath Miller (34 receiving yards) and WR Cedrick Wilson (12-yard catch).
Analysis: Of these players, only Miller is worth starting on a regular basis in deeper leagues as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy TE. Davenport is a good insurance policy for Willie Parker. The rest of these players shouldn't be considered for standard Fantasy use in Week 3 when the Steelers host the 49ers.
News: Steelers QB Charlie Batch finished off Pittsburgh's Week 1, 34-7 win at Cleveland by taking a knee. The one yard loss was his only offensive stat of the game.
Analysis: As long as Ben Roethlisberger remains healthy, Batch has no Fantasy appeal. Leave him on the waiver wire in all leagues.
News: Charlie Batch played in eight games with one start in 2006, and the Steelers backup QB did well when given a chance. He started the season opener against Miami with Ben Roethlisberger (appendectomy) out and was 15-of-25 passing for 209 yards and three touchdowns. He also went 8-of-13 for 195 yards and two touchdowns in less than a half of work against Atlanta in Week 7.
Analysis: Batch is the No. 2 QB and showed in 2006 he could be a useful Fantasy option if Roethlisberger goes down. Don't plan on drafting Batch, but keep an eye on his status if something happens to Roethlisberger.
News: Notable Steelers performers from Week 15 include: WR Cedrick Wilson (21-yard pass completion), backup QB Charlie Batch (8-yard completion), FB John Kuhn (2-yard rush, 15-yard catch), WR Nate Washington (14-yard catch, rush for 0 yards) and TE Heath Miller (25 receiving yards).
Analysis: Of this motley crew, only Miller deserves consideration for Fantasy use vs. Baltimore in Week 16.
News: Charlie Batch got into the game late in the fourth quarter in Week 14 against the Browns. He had two kneel-downs for minus-2 yards.
Analysis: Batch is not a recommended Fantasy option for Week 15 at Carolina.
News: QB Charlie Batch, RB John Kuhn, WR Sean Morey and WR Walter Young were able to play in Week 13 against the Buccaneers, but they did not record any offensive statistics.
Analysis: Brian St. Pierre, the third quarterback, also dressed for the game and did not play. None of the five players are worth any Fantasy consideration for Week 14 against the Browns.
News: Notable performers for the Steelers at Baltimore in Week 12 include: QB Charlie Batch (10 yards passing), WR Nate Washington and WR Cedric Wilson (four catches for 49 yards each), TE Heath Miller (35 yards receiving), WR Santonio Holmes (31 yards receiving), RB Najeh Davenport (10-yard catch) and FB Dan Kreider (2-yard catch). The Steelers were shut out at Baltimore.
Analysis: Of these players, Holmes is a good low-end receiver in seasonal leagues and a great option in keeper leagues. Washington is a low-end version of Holmes, while Miller is worth starting in all leagues. The Steelers host the Bucs in Week 13 -- a good matchup for the players mentioned.
News: Steelers FB Dan Kreider, RB John Kuhn, WR Sean Morey, TE Jerame Tuman and QB Charlie Batch all dressed in Week 11 but did not record an offensive statistic.
Analysis: None of these players are worthy of Fantasy consideration at the moment.
News: Steelers FB Dan Kreider, RB John Kuhn, WR Sean Morey, TE Jerame Tuman and QB Charlie Batch all dressed in Week 10 but did not record an offensive statistic.
Analysis: None of these players are worthy of Fantasy consideration at the moment.
News: Steelers QB Charlie Batch didn't play against Denver despite Ben Roethlisberger throwing three interceptions.
Analysis: Batch has no Fantasy value as long as he remains a backup. Keep him reserved in all leagues.
News: Steelers WR Sean Morey and QB Charlie Batch dressed in Week 8 against the Raiders but failed to record an offensive statistic.
Analysis: None of these players have much Fantasy value at this time. Batch could be valuable, but that will only happen when starter Ben Roethlisberger is out with injury.
News: CBS has confirmed that barring any unforseen developments, Ben Roethlisberger will start at Oakland in Week 8. Charlie Batch will back him up.
Analysis: Roethlisberger is a fair option in Week 8 Fantasy play.
News: ESPN reports that Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (head) is expected to start at Oakland in Week 8, barring a setback. He participated in practice on Wednesday. "I'm just trying to get ready and to go out and help the team any way I can," Roethlisberger said.
Analysis: Roethlisberger faces an Oakland defense that has been on the rise but is still susceptible to both the run and the pass. Consider him a good No. 2 or a bye-week replacement QB for Week 8, but confirm his status on Sunday afternoon before starting him (Charlie Batch would start in his place; if he did, he'd also be a No. 2 option).
News: Ben Roethlisberger is questionable for the Pittsburgh Steelers' game against Oakland after sustaining a concussion against Atlanta -- the second concussion for the Super Bowl-winning quarterback in slightly more than four months. Roethlisberger was briefly knocked unconscious during a helmet-to-helmet hit with the Falcons' Chauncey Davis midway through the third quarter after completing 16-of-22 passes for 238 yards and three touchdowns -- his best game of the season. "He will be cleared medically before we subject him to playing," coach Bill Cowher said Tuesday. "We will take all necessary precautions. ... We are very encouraged with the results. But it's too early to tell (if he will play Sunday). ... If he's not cleared, he's not going to play."
Analysis: Owners who are relying on Roethlisberger for use in Fantasy leagues should keep very close tabs on this situation. If he plays, he's worth using against an Oakland defense that has allowed 24 or more points in four of their six games this season. If he can't play, Charlie Batch will get the start, and he'd be a viable option as well based on his games this season in Big Ben's stead.
News: Steelers QB Charlie Batch entered the game in the third quarter and completed 8-of-13 passes for 195 yards with two touchdowns at Atlanta in Week 7.
Analysis: Batch could start for the Steelers at Oakland in Week 8, and might be a decent option as he's been an effective passer when called upon by Pittsburgh. Wait and see on this one.
News: Steelers backup QB Charlie Batch completed a 6-yard catch in mop-up duty vs. Kansas City in Week 6.
Analysis: Batch shouldn't be used or owned in any Fantasy leagues. Keep him on the waiver wire.
News: Backup QB Charlie Batch (did not play), FB Dan Kreider, WR Sean Morey, WR/KR Willie Reid and TE Jerame Tuman did not record any offensive statistics in Week 5 at San Diego.
Analysis: Avoid using any of the players mentioned above for Week 6 against Kansas City.
News: Steelers backup QB Charlie Batch was active but did not play Week 2 at Jacksonville.
Analysis: Batch won't see the field again unless Ben Roethlisberger gets hurt and misses playing time. Owners of Big Ben shouldn't back him up with Batch as there are better QB options out there.
News: Charlie Batch, getting the start in Week 1 against the Dolphins in place of Ben Roethlisberger (appendectomy), tied a career-high with three touchdown passes (27, 7, 87). He finished 15-of-25 for 209 yards in the win. "I walked in here Sunday and had no idea I would be the starter," Batch said. "But I always tell myself, 'When you go in there, don't be the guy who takes a step back, keep things going offensively without changing the game plan.' And I think I was able to do that."
Analysis: Batch might get another start in Week 2 at Jacksonville if Big Ben is unable to get back into the lineup. He is still only recommended in leagues of 14 or more teams against a stiff Jaguars defense.
News: Charlie Batch connected with WR Nate Washington early in the second quarter of Thursday's NFL regular season opener against the Dolphins for the league's first touchdown pass.
Analysis: Batch is filling in for starter Ben Roethlisberger, who had an emergency appendectomy and is out for at least Week 1. His return date is uncertain, so Batch remains a viable Fantasy starter until his return.
News: Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had an emergency appendectomy after becoming ill before practice on Sunday and will miss Thursday's NFL season opener against Miami. Coach Bill Cowher said Roethlisberger will be evaluated each week, and he was not certain how long the quarterback will be out.
Analysis: Charlie Batch, the former Detroit Lions starter who was 2-0 as a fill-in last season when Roethlisberger hurt his knee, will start against the Dolphins in the NFL's first game of the season. Consider Batch a very low-level replacement for Big Ben since he's unlikely to throw for any more than 200 yards.
News: There were no surprises when the Steelers cut 20 players Saturday, even though quarterbacks Omar Jacobs and Shane Boyd were among them. That leaves only starter Ben Roethlisberger and backup Charlie Batch on the roster, but fifth-round pick Jacobs will join the practice squad unless he is claimed by another team. Wide receiver Cedrick Wilson, a former high school QB, will be the emergency quarterback.
Analysis: Roethlisberger is the only Steelers QB worth owning in Fantasy and he's a low-end starter because of the Steelers' expected run-oriented offense. Ignore Batch, Jacobs and Boyd at this point, while Wilson is currently the Steelers' No. 2 wideout and a viable reserve at the WR position in Fantasy.
News: Charlie Batch threw a 23-yard TD pass to Cedric Wilson for Pittsburgh's only score in Friday's preseason game at Philadelphia. He finished 10-for-15 with 72 yards and the score.
Analysis: Depite the nice game, Batch is useless in Fantasy leagues unless starter Ben Roethlisberger goes down with long-term injury in 2006.
News: Charlie Batch (undisclosed) was able to play in Saturday's preseason game at Arizona. He was 3-of-4 for 27 yards.
Analysis: Batch is useless in Fantasy leagues unless starter Ben Roethlisberger goes down with long-term injury in 2006.
News: Nine players skipped the Steelers' camp-opening runs because of medical concerns, the most of any recent Steelers camp. Among those not running were quarterback Charlie Batch, center Jeff Hartings, running back Duce Staley, nose tackle Casey Hampton, linebacker Joey Porter, right tackle Max Starks, defensive end Shaun Nua and tight end Walter Young.
Analysis: As the Steelers' No. 3 QB, Batch was 23-of-36 passing for 246 yards, one TD and one interception in two starts in 2005. Batch was forced into action when Steelers QBs Ben Roethlisberger and Tommy Maddox went down. Batch is useless in Fantasy leagues unless Roethlisberger goes down with an injury again in 2006. By the way, Roethlisberger is active in camp already after his offseason bike accident.
News: Pittsburgh Steelers backup QB Charlie Batch signed a three-year deal that will pay him about $1 million this season.
Analysis: As the Steelers' No. 3 QB, Batch was 23-of-36 passing for 246 yards, one TD and one interception in two starts in 2005. Batch was forced into action when Steelers QBs Ben Roethlisberger and Tommy Maddox went down. Batch is useless in Fantasy leagues unless Roethlisberger goes down with an injury.
News: Steelers backup QB Charlie Batch was 23-of-36 passing for 246 yards, one TD and one interception in two starts in 2005. Batch was forced into action when Steelers QBs Ben Roethlisberger and Tommy Maddox went down. He will be a free agent this offseason.
Analysis: Batch has no Fantasy appeal.
News: Charlie Batch completed his only pass of the game for 31 yards, as he finished up Week 16 at Cleveland for Ben Roethlisberger.
Analysis: Batch might see time against the Lions in Week 17 if coach Bill Cowher decides to rest Ben Roethlisberger, but he would still not be a recommended Fantasy option.
News: Charlie Batch didn't record an offensive statistic in Sunday's 18-3 win over the Minnesota Vikings.
Analysis: Batch has no value in Fantasy Football.
News: Tommy Maddox was declared inactive for Week 15 at Minnesota. Charlie Batch will back up Ben Roethlisberger.
Analysis: Batch has no value in Fantasy Football.
News: Charlie Batch (hand, questionable) returned to practice Wednesday, and will back up Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback,
Analysis: Batch still has no significant Fantasy value.
News: Charlie Batch (hand) is listed as questionable for Week 14 and will serve as the team's backup quarterback against the Chicago Bears, according to head coach Bill Cowher. Tommy Maddox will be third on the depth chart.
Analysis: Batch has little value in Fantasy Football; there are better QBs out there that could serve as a Fantasy backup to Ben Roethlisberger.
News: Charlie Batch (hand) will be listed as questionable for Week 14 and serve as the team's backup quarterback against the Chicago Bears, according to head coach Bill Cowher. Tommy Maddox will be third on the depth chart.
Analysis: Batch has little value in Fantasy Football at this point.
News: QB Charlie Batch (hand) is doubtful, and Tommy Maddox again will back up Ben Roethlisberger in Week 13.
Analysis: Batch is useless in Fantasy leagues.
News: Charlie Batch did not dress for Monday night's game vs. Indianapolis due to a broken right hand.
Analysis: With Ben Roethlisberger back and healthy, Batch has no value in Fantasy Football.
News: QB Charlie Batch will have another X-ray of his broken right hand, but it's unlikely he'll serve as the backup to Roethlisberger Monday night at Indianapolis. He has not practiced this week or last.
Analysis: Batch shouldn't be on Fantasy rosters while he recovers from his hand injury.
News: According to Steelers coach Bill Cowher, Charlie Batch will be out for at least one game after breaking a bone in his right hand during Week 10 vs. Cleveland.
Analysis: Batch played about as well as a backup can during the first half, completing 13 of 19 passes for 150 yards and breaking off a 15-yard run. Batch no longer has any value and should be dropped in all Fantasy leagues.
News: Charlie Batch was efficient in Sunday night's 34-21 victory over the Browns, completing 13-of-19 passes for 150 yards while scoring on a one-yard TD run. However, he broke his right hand and is expected to miss the next two weeks, according to head coach Bill Cowher. Tommy Maddox replaced Batch while former college quarterback Antwaan Randle El threw a TD to Hines Ward on a reverse.
Analysis: Regular starter Ben Roethlisberger may be able to return to action in Week 11 when the Steelers travel to Baltimore. If he still isn't fully recovered from knee surgery, expect Maddox to get the start. Maddox is not a good Fantasy option should he get the nod.
News: Charlie Batch suffered a broken right hand in the second quarter of Week 10 against the Browns, finishing 13-of-19 for 150 yards. He also carried three times for 16 yards and a touchdown before departing.
Analysis: Batch will be available as an emergency replacement only for Tommy Maddox.
News: The Post-Gazette reports Ben Roethlisberger (knee) will miss Week 10 against the Cleveland Browns. Charlie Batch will start again in his absence.
Analysis: Batch looked awful against Green Bay and is not a recommended option in most cases.
News: Charlie Batch completed 9-of-16 for 65 yards, no touchdowns and an interception in Week 9 at Green Bay, but it was good enough for a victory.
Analysis: Batch was pretty terrible from a Fantasy perspective and he will likely be back on the sidelines in Week 10 if Tommy Maddox (shoulder) or Ben Roethlisberger (knee) are available.
News: The Steelers will start Charlie Batch at quarterback in Week 9 at Green Bay because regular starter Ben Roethlisberger had knee surgery and will miss at least one game.
Analysis: Batch has a nice matchup, but because he hasn't played in an NFL game since 2003, expect a lot of rust. Don't use him unless your options are slim otherwise.
News: Tommy Maddox (shoulder, calf) isn't likely to have playing time anytime soon. Charlie Batch is expected to be the backup Sunday at Cincinnati when Ben Roethlisberger returns after sitting out against the Jaguars with a hyperextended left knee.
Analysis: Maddox, is questionable for Week 7 at Cincinnati, but it looks like he is not worth a roster spot once again anyway. Cut him in Fantasy leagues as the Steelers have lost confidence in him after his debacle Sunday. Roethlisberger owners should keep an eye on his injury status before considering Batch a viable waiver-wire addition.
News: Because of injuries to both Ben Roethlisberger (knee) and Tommy Maddox (calf), third-string QB Charlie Batch has been named starter "by default," says Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. There's still a chance both Roethlisberger or Maddox will be ready to play in Week 6 vs. Jacksonville.
Analysis: Batch's last start was in 2001. Considering the matchup, steer clear of all Steelers QBs this week.
News: An MRI confirmed that Ben Roethlisberger has a hyperextended left knee and a bone bruise sustained during a game-winning field goal drive Monday at San Diego. The injury isn't as severe as it initially appeared to be - immediately after the game, coach Bill Cowher said "it looked bad." Backup Tommy Maddox sat out the San Diego game with a calf injury, but also could be available Sunday. Cowher said his injury also wasn't as bad as initially thought.
Analysis: Big Ben hasn't been ruled out of Sunday's game against Jacksonville. Either Charlie Batch, who replaced Roethlisberger Monday, or Maddox would start if the second-year kid can't go. When healthy, he's a decent No. 2 Fantasy quarterback, but if the team has to go with one of the backups, the Fantasy numbers of Hines Ward and Willie Parker could be affected negatively.
News: Charlie Batch came on late in the fourth quarter on Monday at San Diego in place of the injured Ben Roethlisberger (leg).
Analysis: Batch was summoned because No. 2 quarterback Tommy Maddox injured a calf in practice during the week. Batch might be called on to start in Week 6 against Jacksonville if Roethlisberger cannot go, but let's wait and see what Big Ben's status is first.
News: Charlie Batch has been cut by Pittsburgh, but should be signed again after this week. This is commonplace around the league as teams look for ways to circumvent the salary cap.
Analysis: Do not consider using him in the near future.
News: The Pittsburgh Steelers have released Brian St. Pierre, who lost his roster spot to Charlie Batch.
Analysis: Batch still has no value in Fantasy Football.
News: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Charlie Batch (knee) has looked good at practice. "I'm going through everything and I'm not experiencing any setbacks," Batch said. "I'm full-go."
Analysis: Batch is competing to be the Steelers' No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback. He has little value in Fantasy Football.
News: The Steelers official wesbite reports the team has re-signed Charlie Batch.
Analysis: Batch, who missed the entire 2004 season with a knee injury, will compete with Brian St. Pierre for the No. 3 quarterback spot.
News: According to reports, Steelers QB Charlie Batch will miss the entire season after having knee surgery on Friday.
Analysis: No.1 pick Ben Roethlisberger will now serve as the backup to Tommy Maddox.
News: According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers might release Charlie Batch if Brian St. Pierre improves during camp.
Analysis: The selection of Ben Roethlisberger in the draft appears to have made Batch expendable.
News: Batch would like to be a starting quarterback in 2003. However, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that he would be consider returning to the Steelers to be Tommy Maddox's primary backup now that Kordell Stewart seems to be out of the picture.
Analysis:
News: Batch is now Pittsburgh's No. 2 QB. He will back up Kordell Stewart while Tommy Maddox is out. Batch will have no Fantasy value unless Stewart struggles badly in Maddox's place.
Analysis:
News: Batch will start the second half in Thursday's preseason game. He will follow Kordell Stewart, who is returning from a concussion. Batch is slated to be Pittsburgh's No. 3 quarterback, so his Fantasy value is minimal.
Analysis:
News: Batch injured his throwing hand during practice on Tuesday. The injury isn't considered serious and will not keep him from missing much practice time.
Analysis:
News: Batch has signed with the Steelers. He will back up Kordell Stewart and won't have much Fantasy appeal even if he is needed to start at some point.
Analysis:
News: According to published reports, Batch has signed with the Steelers. He will back up Kordell Stewart and won't have much Fantasy appeal even if he is needed to start at some point.
Analysis:
News: According to The Detroit News, Batch is scheduled to meet with the Green Bay Packers. He has met with the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars as well. He will not be a starter with any team, but is an adequate backup who may garner Fantasy attention if the starter on his new team should go down in training camp or the regular season. Green Bay is perhaps the place his value would be the least due to Brett Favre's durability.
Analysis:
News: Batch has been released by the Detroit Lions. The Jacksonville Jaguars are reportedly interested in signing Batch, but he will be no better than a reserve from a Fantasy perspective in any event.
Analysis:
News: According to The Florida Times-Union, the Jacksonville Jaguars might be interested in signing Batch. He would serve as a backup to Mark Brunell and have minimal Fantasy value.
Analysis:
News: According to published reports, the Detroit Lions will release Batch if he is not taken by Houston in the expansion draft. Batch will likely be signed by another team during the offseason, but not as a starter. Unless he is taken by Houston and is declared the No. 1 quarterback, Batch's Fantasy value could hit new lows.
Analysis:
News: The Lions placed Batch on injured reserve Wednesday, officially ending his season. He suffered a separated right shoulder in Sunday's game against Chicago, and an MRI showed no damage that would require surgery. Drop Batch if he was on your roster.
Analysis:
News: Batch left Sunday's game against Chicago in the second half due to a shoulder injury. He didn't return to the contest, and early reports indicate that he could miss up to six weeks due to the injury.
Analysis:
News: Batch practiced Wednesday and showed no ill effects of the pulled groin that forced him out of last Thursday's game against Green Bay. He is expected to start Sunday against Chicago, but is only worth using in Fantasy leagues if you have no other reliable QB on your roster.
Analysis:
News: According to the Detroit Free Press, Batch is expected to start Sunday's game against Chicago despite a groin injury. "This is Charlie's offense," coach Marty Mornhinweg said. "He practiced a little bit today...he was in all weekend getting (the injury) treated...I would expect him close to full speed Wednesday." He'll likely lose snaps to rookie QB Mike McMahon, however, so starting Batch is a risky proposition.
Analysis:
News: It is unclear who will start at quarterback for the Lions on Sunday against Chicago, as Batch is still sore from strained groin muscles that limited him on Thursday. Mike McMahon has been getting most of the playing time when Batch can't go, but the Lions' management might start Ty Detmer due to the tough Bears secondary. We don't recommend any of the three for Week 12.
Analysis:
News: Batch was 8-of-19 for 118 yards with no touchdowns, an interception and a fumble before Mike McMahon, who played one series in the first half, replaced him midway through the fourth quarter. Batch said he couldn't plant and throw effectively because of a groin pull. His status for next week's game is uncertain.
Analysis:
News: Batch had a huge game against Arizona last weekend, but he's been inconsistent this season for the most part. He's better off used when the matchup is right, so facing a tough Green Bay defense may not bode well for his Fantasy numbers.
Analysis:
News: Batch will again lose playing time to Mike McMahon this week. McMahon will be the No. 2 QB again, but will see playing time as the Lions continue to use two quarterbacks. As a result, you may want to look for another signal-caller to start on your Fantasy team.
Analysis:
News: Batch might lose some playing time to Mike McMahon again this week. McMahon will be the No. 2 QB again, and could see playing time if the Lions continue to use two QBs. As a result, you may want to look for another quarterback to start on your Fantasy team this week.
Analysis:
News: Despite splitting a few snaps with Mike McMahon in the first half of Sunday's game against San Francisco, Batch is still Detroit's No. 1 quarterback. "Charlie is the quarterback of this football team," Mornhinweg told the Detroit Free Press. "I want to make that clear, and I made that clear to Charlie as well as Mike. But it is important in developing a quarterback to get him some time in a league game when the game is still on the line."
Analysis:
News: Batch has been splitting time behind center with rookie Mike McMahon in the first half of Sunday's game against San Francisco. They've alternated series in the game thus far.
Analysis:
News: Batch is fully recovered from the sore shoulder that forced him to miss all of last week's practices. He should be fine for Week Eight.
Analysis:
News: Batch started Sunday's game against Cincinnati after battling a tender right shoulder during the week. He tossed for 239 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, which aren't bad Fantasy stats. Batch has posted solid totals for three straight games, although we still believe he will be inconsistent the rest of the way due to injuries to his receiving corps.
Analysis:
News: Batch was given the day off Wednesday, because of a sore arm. However, The Detroit Free Press reports that he is still expected to play Sunday against the Bengals.
Analysis:
News: Batch threw for 338 yards, three TDs and was intercepted once in a loss to Tennessee. Batch has stacked up good numbers in two consecutive weeks, but he remains a Fantasy risk because of his history of inconsistency.
Analysis:
News: Batch had a huge game against Minnesota, throwing for 345 yards and three scores. He's still not worth starting on a weekly basis despite the performance, but he might now warrant a reserve role in deeper leagues.
Analysis:
News: Batch has reclaimed the starting quarterback job with the Lions. While he can't be any worse than Ty Detmer, we don't recommend you expect either QB to provide your team with good Fantasy stats.
Analysis:
News: Ty Detmer will replace Batch as starting quarterback for the Detroit Lions, who struggled offensively in an opening-game loss to Green Bay. Detmer will start Sunday when the Lions play host to the Dallas Cowboys. You might want to avoid him until he proves he can handle the Detroit offense with some measure of success. "I was unsatisfied with the level that Charlie played at," coach Marty Mornhinweg said Monday.
Analysis:
News: Batch should have plenty of receivers to throw to in Sunday's season opener in Green Bay. However, he is susceptible to the untimely interception, and is just as likely to hurt your Fantasy team's stats than help them this week.
Analysis:
News: Batch was held out of practice on Tuesday due to a swollen muscle in his right calf. The injury isn't considered seroius, and Batch is expected to return to action on Thursday.
Analysis:
News: Despite a history of injury problems, Batch feels that an offseason of conditioning has him in the best shape of his career. "I know I can play," he said. "It's just a matter of playing, staying healthy, and things are going to happen. Normally when I'm healthy, good things happen." Batch has been a disappointment as a Fantasy player for the most part, and his value is no more than that of a backup on your Fantasy team this season.
Analysis:
News: The Detroit Free Press reports that there's a possibility that Batch has fractured, not just badly bruised, ribs. "There's always a likelihood you could end up with some sort of fractures in your ribs, and it's not much different from bruised ribs or strained rib cartilage," Lions Chief Operating Officer Chuck Schmidt said. Batch is the only player who knows for certain, although all he had to say was "I'm not talking."
Analysis:
News: Batch practiced without any restrictions Wednesday despite the fact that he is still suffering from a lingering rib injury. He will start Sunday's game against the Jets but don't expect him to be too productive for your Fantasy team.
Analysis:
News: Batch had a terrible game against the Packers Sunday. While completing just 17-of-33 passes for 190 yards, Batch tossed three interceptions without a touchdown. Batch has been inconsistent this season so avoid using him during the Fantasy postseason.
Analysis:
News: Batch praticed Thursday and expects to play on Sunday. "Everything felt fine," Batch told The Detroit News. "I was able to do everything I did yesterday, if not better. The way it's going now, I don't anticipate any problems going into Sunday." He may not lead your Fantasy team to victory but Batch won't cause your squad to lose either.
Analysis:
News: Batch practiced Wednesday but his status for Sunday's game is still undetermined and he is listed as questionable. He left last Thursday's contest in the first quarter due to sore ribs. "At this point I don't know," he told the Detroit Free Press. "I'll know more tomorrow." To be safe use another starting QB. You don't want to risk Batch playing only a few downs while your Fantasy team is in a playoff game.
Analysis:
News: Batch, who left last Thursday's game against Minnesota with sore ribs, should be able to practice tomorrow and hopes to play Sunday against Green Bay. We'll keep tabs on him, but he's not the kind of player who will carry your Fantasy team at quarterback this week.
Analysis:
News: Batch should be able to play next weekend against Green Bay, despite leaving Thursday's game against Minnesota. "He didn't reinjure his ribs or anything," team doctor David Collon said. "It was too sore for him to feel he could play effectively, so we just gave up after the first two series." Batch received numbing injections to ease pain in his ribs. Collon said no X-rays were necessary.
Analysis:
News: Batch left Thursday night's game against Minnesota after re-aggravating a rib injury. His return to the game is doubtful. Stoney Case has replaced him in the lineup.
Analysis:
News: Batch's condition was much improved in practice Tuesday and he expects to start Thursday's game at Minnesota. He did not look too good in Monday's session, and his bruised ribs and sternum bothered him so much that he was not expected to play Thursday. But what a difference a day makes. He was able to do everything that would be required of him on gameday except throw long, but Batch thinks he will have healed enough by Thursday to go deep. Look for him to put up decent numbers against the mediocre Vikings pass defense.
Analysis:
News: Batch, who suffered a rib injury during the Thanksgiving day game, may not be able to play this Thursday against Minnesota. He made only a few short throws and made a few handoffs in practice yesterday, and said that the discomfort would have prevented him from playing had the game been yesterday. Batch will be a gametime decision for Thursday, and Coach Gary Moeller said he may even start him without practice, provided he can throw with velocity and accuracy. Stoney Case would get the call if Batch can't go.
Analysis:
News: In one of his best performances, Batch tossed three touchdowns while competing 20 of 32 passes for 225 yards and one interception. Batch may have looked good at New York, but he has been erratic and unreliable for most of the year. Don't plug him into your starting lineup just yet.
Analysis:
News: Despite throwing for just 557 yards and one touchdown against three interceptions over his last four games, Batch will be the starter for Sunday's game against the Giants. Coach Gary Moeller says he has no plans to bench Batch, and the only change he's considering is giving backup Stoney Case a look in relief if his starter is struggling.
Analysis:
News: In an uninspiring performance, Batch completed just 12 of 27 passes for 128 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. The Atlanta defense has been vulnerable all year long, and Batch's struggles against the Falcons prove he is not a reliable Fantasy QB for these final weeks, even as a backup.
Analysis:
News: Batch suffered a concussion in Sunday's game against Miami but practiced Wednesday and says he feels fine. He is listed as probable for Detroit's Week 11 home game against Atlanta.
Analysis:
News: The Lions' running game was extremely successful against Tampa Bay Thursday but their passing didn't do too well. Facing constant pressure from the Bucs' defense, QB Charlie Batch completed just 13-of-31 passes for 144 yards.
Analysis:
News: Batch suffered a bruised right thumb in Sunday's game but says he is just fine. The thumb is sore but not swollen, Batch was able to practice with no problems Wednesday. Batch has an unimpressive 69.0 QB rating this season, throwing four touchdowns and six interceptions.
Analysis:
News: Quarterback Charlie Batch turned in another solid performance Sunday. He completed 25-of-44 passes for 239 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Batch may not be in the upper echelon with Peyton Manning and Kurt Warner in terms of statistics, but he is certainly one of the best QBs in the league.
Analysis:
News: Batch was sharp on Sunday after two shaky starts. He completed 20-of-32 passes for 207 yards. Batch threw for a pair of touchdowns against one interception.
Analysis:
News: Batch is still nursing rib problems, but should return to practice in midweek. Batch has had trouble staying healthy for much of his career.
Analysis:
News: Batch tried, but he couldn't provide much help for the Lions against a stifling Tampa Bay defense. He completed 25-of-36 passes for 275 yards and a touchdown to Germane Crowell, but also threw two interceptions.
Analysis:
News: Batch announced on Thursday that he will start against the Redskins on Sunday. Batch missed the entire preseason after breaking a bone in his knee during minicamp. The Redskins' defense will definitely test Batch's knee on Sunday. The Lions offense will be more stable with Batch at QB. He will spread the ball more evenly amongst the receivers and the Lions will throw more with him playing. Expect Batch to throw a few TD passes and surpass 200 yards against a good Redskins' defense.
Analysis:
News: Batch is expected to start Sunday against the Redskins. He received medical clearance to play after being examined by a physician on Aug. 28 but decided he wasn't ready to play in the season opener. The Detroit Lions reached agreement with Batch on a four-year contract extension worth $31 million, on Wednesday. The deal, which was negotiated over the past six weeks, includes a $13 million signing bonus.
Analysis:
News: Batch has been practicing for over a week now but he will be inactive for the season opener on Sunday. He received medical clearance to play after being examined by a physician on Monday but Batch decided he is not ready to play. According to NFL injury expert Steve Cohen , QB Stoney Case will start for the Lions on Sunday. It will take some time for Batch to regain his rhythm. When Batch does return to form he will be a solid Fantasy backup QB and should give owners a few good starts.
Analysis:
News: Batch has been practicing for over a week now and is probable for the season opener on Sunday. He missed the entire preseason due to a broken bone in his knee. Batch was scheduled to be examined by his physician on Monday. Should he receive medical clearance it would then be up to head coach Bobby Ross to decide wheter or not he can play. It will take some time for Batch to regain his rhythm. When Batch does return to form he will be a solid Fantasy backup QB and should give owners a few good starts.
Analysis:
News: Batch worked out Tuesday for the first time since breaking a bone in his knee. He went through some light quarterback drills but sat out of the more serious exercises. Although he will probably miss the preseason he should be ready for the season opener.
Analysis:
News: The Lions contend that Batch may be ready to play in the season opener on Sept. 3. Batch is recovering from a broken leg that required surgery. Even if Batch does return and is 100 percent, he is till a risky pick given his history for injuries.
Analysis:
News: Batch says he is optimistic of making a quick recovery from a leg fracture and perhaps playing when the Detroit Lions open the season Sept. 3 at New Orleans. The Lions say he is expected to miss three months while recovering from Monday's injury. Batch said Wednesday that he does not expect to be out that long. "It could be a lot sooner," Batch said. "I'm more optimistic. It's a matter of whether I need surgery. That's not 100 percent. Looking at it myself, I think I'll probably start working out the second week of training camp. I'm not even sure I'll need the surgery." Batch expected results today from a second opinion on the extent of the injury. If surgery is needed, it would be done Monday or Tuesday, he said.
Analysis:
News: Lions QB Charlie Batch, making his first start since fracturing his right thumb in Nov., looked rusty Saturday, completing 21 of 40 passes for 267 yards. There were some drops, but Batch was largely ineffective until late in the game, when he capped an 80-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown toss to Herman Moore.
Analysis:
News: Although there has been little improvement in quarterback Charlie Batch's injured right hand, head coach Bobby Ross plans to start Batch this Saturday vs. Denver. Batch played briefly in relief of Gus Frerotte in last week's loss to Chicago, and performed well enough to convince Ross that he's ready to return. The Lions have won just two of six games with Frerotte starting.
Analysis:
News: Reports out of Detroit are that the Lions are ready to bring QB Charlie Batch back for this week's game against Denver. Batch broken finger is apparently just about 100 percent, and the team isn't especially happy with the recent play of Gus Frerotte. Batch came in for an ineffective Frerotte Sunday and went 6-10 for 95 yards.
Analysis:
News: With Gus Frerotte struggling, Batch came in with 10:26 left in Sunday's loss to Chicago and scored the Lions' only touchdown, a 12-yard run with 3:25 left. He finished 6-of-10 for 95 yards. Frerotte was 17-of-30 for 158 yards with three interceptions. If Batch's thumb doesn't feel any worse during the upcoming week, coach Bobby Ross said he'll start against Denver on Christmas Day.
Analysis:
News: X-rays revealed Batch has a hairline fracture in his right thumb. Coach Bobby Ross said news of the fracture is disappointing because "the only way it is going to get better is with a long time off." He wouldn't say Batch's season is over, still reserving hope the trainers can keep the swelling down, enabling Batch to get back into the lineup for Sunday's game at Chicago. "We'll make a decision by Wednesday," Ross said. "We're not going to wait."
Analysis:
News: Lions head coach Bobby Ross says that quarterback Charlie Batch will take over as the team's starter as soon as he is healthy. That could come as early as the Bucs game, but head coach Bobby Ross might not make a final decision until this weekend, and reports are saying he is leaning towards Gus Frerotte as his starter again. While Batch has been sidelined, Frerotte has won twice in four starts.
Analysis:
News: Reports are that injured Lions QB Charlie Batch practiced today with the first team along with number two Gus Frerotte. There is a chance that Batch could play on Thursday, but a decision won't be made until Wednesday.
Analysis:
News: Lions QB Charlie Batch's injured thumb still won't allow him to grip a football and he's not expected to play in this week's game. Look for backup Gus Frerotte to get the start again.
Analysis:
News: Lions QB Charlie Batch's injured thumb will put him on the bench for this week's game. Friday, he was unable to participate in practice and Detroit named backup Gus Frerotte the starter for Sunday.
Analysis:
News: Lions starting QB Charlie Batch was unable to practice on Wednesday because of a swollen thumb suffered last Sunday. He is questionable for Week 10. If Batch can't go, look for Gus Frerotte to get the start.
Analysis:
News: Before going out with a injured thumb on his passing hand, Lions QB Charlie Batch had completed 10 passes for 148 yards and a TD. X-rays on Batch's thumb indicated no break, but he is experiencing massive swelling. Neither he nor the Lions expect him to play this Sunday, so look for Gus Frerotte.
Analysis:
News: Batch sprained his thumb in the first half of Sunday's win over St. Louis. He was replaced by Gus Frerotte, who completed 12 of 16 passes for 209 passes and two touchdowns and played the entire second half. X-rays on Batch's thumb were negative.
Analysis:
News: While throwing a pair of touchdowns, Lions QB Charlie Batch completed 16 of 27 passes for 210 yards. Not great numbers, but consistent, and a good showing for Batch (arm) considering that he was doubtful earlier in the week.
Analysis:
News: The latest on Lions QB Charlie Batch is that the MRI performed on his back Tuesday was negative, and he was back in practice Thursday with no apparent pain. He is expected to start on Sunday. Even so, take care in starting him as it's not yet clear if he is really healthy.
Analysis:
News: Contrary to earlier reports, the outlook for Lions starting QB Charlie Batch isn't great for this week's game. Wednesday in practice Batch had to leave early because of back spasms and pain in his arm. He then went a had an MRI performed, the results of which should be known Thursday. He is now listed as questionable for Sunday.
Analysis:
News: Lions starting QB Charlie Batch, who suffered a bruised triceps muscle early in Sunday's game, is expected to play in Week Seven. Good news for Batch owners, but watch the injury reports closely to make sure before you activate him.
Analysis:
News: Batch left Sunday's game against Minnesota on Sunday with 12:04 left in the third quarter. He suffered a bruised arm and did not return. Gus Frerotte replaced him.
Analysis:
News: Second-year Lions quarterback Charlie Batch completed 21 of 38 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown Sunday. A decent outing, but the Lions and Batch owners alike were hoping for a lot more than 10 points from the talented QB.
Analysis:
News: Coming off the bye week, the Lions have had plenty of time to prepare for Week Five. The Chargers D will hold down Ron Rivers, so it will be up to QB Charlie Batch to win it with his arm. At home, Batch makes a excellent start this week.
Analysis:
News: Lions QB Charlie Batch took a step backwards against Kansas City, completing only 16 of 34 passes for 213 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Bad day for Batch, but he'll have next week off (bye) to prepare for the Chargers in Week Five.
Analysis:
News: The rapid development of Lions second-year quarterback Charlie Batch continued Sunday, as he threw three touchdowns and piled up 216 yards through the air. Great day for Batch who may emerge as a solid Fantasy starter this year, rather than just a backup. The loss of Herman Moore for a few weeks won't help though.
Analysis:
News: Reports out of Detroit are that Lions coach Bobby Ross has indicated that with Barry Sanders gone, now the team will focus on a passing attack this season. If true, this could mean big things for QB Charlie Batch and the Lions WRs.
Analysis:
News: Lions starting QB Charlie Batch looked crisp Friday night, going 11-16 for 146 yards, including a 30-yard TD pass to WR Germane Crowell. Batch played three series before being replaced by Gus Frerotte.
Analysis:
News: He was about the only bright spot in a disappointing 1998 season for the Lions. The entire offense (including Barry Sanders) struggled mightily. Batch took over for Scott Mitchell in game five, and went on the throw for 11 TDs and 2,178 yards in 12 games. Decent numbers for the rookie considering he was tossed into angry seas in mid-season. Much will depend on Sanders return, but Herman Moore still remains a receiving threat, despite a poor '98. Batch should put together a decent season and will be good for at least 15 TDs and 2,700 yards.
Analysis:
