News: The Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms with free agent punter and kicker Ricky Schmitt. The 6-foot-3 Schmitt debuted in the NFL in 2009, kicking for San Francisco on Dec. 27 against Detroit. He had two field goals on three attempts with five kickoffs. But he hurt a hamstring and went on injured reserve the last week of the season. The 24-year-old Schmitt also has been with Pittsburgh, Oakland and originally joined Arizona as a rookie free agent in 2007.
Analysis: Schmitt is not expected to unseat Rob Bironas for the kicking job. Keep him off of Fantasy rosters.
News: The San Francisco 49ers announced Saturday they have signed K Shane Andrus. In addition, the team placed K Ricky Schmitt on the Injured Reserve List (groin). Andrus is a right-footed kicker and will wear jersey No. 9.
Analysis: Andrus, a 29-year-old native of Murray, KY, played collegiately at Murray State, where he connected on 26 of 36 field goal attempts and 51 of 52 PATs. Schmitt, who was signed by the 49ers on December 23, 2009, played in one game, and hit 2 of 3 field goal attempts and 2 of 2 PATs. Andrus is likely going to kick for the Niners in Week 17 with Joe Nedney also out for the game at the Rams. This makes him a decent last-resort Fantasy option since the 49ers should put up some points against the lowly Rams.
News: The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports that San Francisco PK Ricky Schmitt did not fly with the team to St. Louis for the team's Week 17 game against the Rams. It is not yet known who will kick for the 49ers in the season finale
Analysis: The report adds that punter Andy Lee will not be considered as a replacement for Schmitt. Whoever kicks for San Francisco in Week 17 will be just a low-end Fantasy option for the season finale.
News: The 49ers signed kicker Shane Andrus to start the team's season finale Sunday at St. Louis. The Niners (7-8) were forced to make a move because kicker Ricky Schmitt has a left groin injury and regular starter Joe Nedney has been sidelined with a hamstring injury. Schmitt was signed before last week's win over the Lions. Coach Mike Singletary said Friday that San Francisco needed to find a kicker from outside the organization.
Analysis: Andrus was released by Tampa Bay in early November. He appeared in one game for Indianapolis this season and three with the Buccaneers. He missed his lone field-goal attempt. Andrus tried out with the Colts for the fourth straight year. He also was with the Colts in 2006 and 2007, but only lasted until training camp each time. He signed with the New York Giants in January 2008 but was waived last February after their Super Bowl win over New England and rejoined Indianapolis two weeks later. Think of Andrus as a decent sleeper Fantasy option as the Niners could have a big game offensively against the porous Rams defense.
News: 49ers coach Mike Singletary said Monday that kicker Joe Nedney (hamstring) will not play in Week 17 at St. Louis. Nedney missed Sunday's game against Detroit and was replaced by Ricky Schmitt, who made 2 of 3 field goals and two extra points against the Lions.
Analysis: It's safe to release Nedney in all leagues, and Schmitt could be worth adding since the Rams have struggled on defense all season. Consider Schmitt a low-end No. 1 Fantasy kicker in Week 17.
News: San Francisco PK Ricky Schmitt, making his NFL debut, hit two of the three field goals he attempted on Sunday in a Week 16 win over the Lions. The lone kick he missed was blocked. The two field goals he made were good from 33 and 39 yards out. He was starting with Joe Nedney out due to injury.
Analysis: Schmitt could kick for the Niners again Week 17 if Nedney is again sidelined with the hamstring injury. The team has little reason to rush Nedney back as the team has been eliminated from the playoffs. Whoever kicks for the Niners in Week 17 will be an intriguing choice as the team takes on a poor St. Louis defense.
