Dawson misses only kick in return Dawson misses only kick in return Updated 11/1/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Cleveland PK Phil Dawson was able to return to action Week 8 at Chicago. However, he failed to convert his only kick of the day, missing an extra point. Dawson had been out since Week 2 with a calf injury. Analysis: Although Dawson has returned, his Fantasy value hasn't really changed as the Browns' offense has been terrible this season. The Browns are off Week 9 then take on the Ravens Week 10, so Dawson does not need to be owned.
Dawson active at Chicago Dawson active at Chicago Updated 11/1/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Cleveland PK Phil Dawson will be the team's starting kicker on Sunday in the team's Week 8 game at Chicago. Dawson has not played since Week 2 with a right calf injury. Analysis: Although Dawson is going to be active, he is not a recommended option for Week 8 as the Browns will likely struggle to score against the Bears. Cundiff should not be active in any formats either as he is inactive.
Dawson thinks he can kick Dawson thinks he can kick Updated 10/30/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Browns kicker Phil Dawson is optimistic he can play Sunday at Chicago. Dawson has missed the last five weeks with a strained calf, but he returned to practice for a couple of days last week and has been kicking in practice this week. "We'll see, but I'm optimistic," Dawson said. "There would be no one more excited if I got a green light than me. I just want to play again. This sitting around and watching is for the birds." Analysis: The Browns agree: Dawson is probable for Week 8. Replacement Billy Cundiff has made all six of his field goal attempts in place of Dawson, but his longest is 31 yards. Expect to see Dawson active in Week 8, though neither Browns kicker is worth starting in any leagues.
Mangini says Dawson's getting close Mangini says Dawson's getting close Updated 10/29/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Browns head coach Eric Mangini said during a press conference on Thursday that kicker Phil Dawson has made some progress. "I think there's a real good shot, but we have to get through the rest of the week and make sure everything responds the way we think it's going to respond and we hope it responds." Dawson was limited in practice on both Wednesday and Thursday. Analysis: Mangini might decide to use Dawson but could decide to hold him out again in Week 8 as the Browns are off Week 9. "We wouldn't put him out there if we felt that there was a chance that it could be a big setback, or anything along those lines. Whenever he is out there, that's when we feel that he's able to do it. With the bye week next week, it's not something that we're rushing, but we wouldn't do that whether it's the bye week next week or not." Dawson would be a low-end option if he is able to play Week 8. The same goes for Billy Cundiff if he is able to go.
Dawson might be back for Week 8 Dawson might be back for Week 8 Updated 10/28/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: According to the Akron Beacon Journal, Browns PK Phil Dawson could be back for the team's Week 8 game at Chicago. "I'd like to think we have a good shot at that," Browns coach Eric Mangini said. Analysis: Even if Dawson is able to return for Week 8, he won't be a recommended Fantasy option as the Browns have struggled to score points this season. If Billy Cundiff gets the start again, he should be considered a low-end option as well.
Browns list Week 7 inactives Browns list Week 7 inactives Updated 10/25/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Cleveland has listed the following players as active for Week 7 against Green Bay: QB Brett Ratliff (3rd QB), K Phil Dawson, DB Coye Francies, DB Gerard Lawson and RB Chris Jennings. Analysis: None of the players on this list are expected to have much Fantasy appeal this week. Leave them on the waiver wire until further notice.
Dawson likely sitting out Week 7 Dawson likely sitting out Week 7 Updated 10/21/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Cleveland K Phil Dawson (right calf) did not participate in practice all week as the team prepares for its Week 7 game against the Packers. He is considered doubtful for the game. Analysis: Dawson thought to potentially be ready for Week 6 but he ended up being inactive again and Billy Cundiff got the start. Dawson will likely be out again in Week 7, which means Cundiff will again get the starting nod. Dawson and Cundiff are not worth owning in Fantasy considering how poor the Browns offense has been this season.
Dawson out once again for Browns Dawson out once again for Browns Updated 10/18/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Browns kicker Phil Dawson (calf) was listed among the inactives for Week 6 at Pittsburgh. Billy Cundiff once again was activated as the kicker in his place. Analysis: Neither Browns kicker is worth starting in Fantasy play because the Cleveland offense is a mess. Keep both reserved until further notice.
Browns placekicker up in the air Browns placekicker up in the air Updated 10/16/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Browns coach Eric Mangini said a decision on K Phil Dawson won't be made until closer to kickoff. Dawson returned to practice this week after missing the last three games with a calf injury, but with a mix of rain and snow showers in the forecast for Sunday, Mangini may stick with Billy Cundiff, who is 5 for 5 on field goals while filling in for Dawson. Analysis: Neither Browns kicker is worth starting in Fantasy play because the Cleveland offense is a mess, not to mention they'll be playing against a good Steelers defense. Keep both off rosters this week.
Dawson would like to face Steelers Dawson would like to face Steelers Updated 10/14/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Cleveland K Phil Dawson was limited on practice on Thursday as the team prepares for its Week 6 game at Pittsburgh. According to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, Dawson said on Wednesday that he'd like to return this week."It would be nice any week. This isn't any week, this is Steeler week. There are a lot of guys in this locker room who have been a part of this rivalry. The amount of respect that I have for that organization and what they have been able to do, to get a chance to play against them is obviously what you want to do." Dawson also commented on the kicking of his replacement the past three weeks, Billy Cundiff. "He has been doing great. I've been real happy for him. He has helped the team, made the game-winner last week, that's great." Analysis: It looks like Dawson might be back for Week 6, but he wouldn't be a recommended option in the first place as the Browns won't likely score too many points at Pittsburgh. Keep leaving him on waivers. Cundiff is also not a recommended option, if he is kicking Week 6.
Browns list Week 5 inactives Browns list Week 5 inactives Updated 10/11/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Cleveland has listed the following players as being inactive for Week 5 at Buffalo: QB Brett Ratliff, K Phil Dawson, DB Coye Francies, DB Gerard Lawson, RB Chris Jennings, LB Alex Hall and TE Greg Estandia. Analysis: Dawson was not expected to play Week 5 in the first place and has now missed three straight weeks. The rest of these players have little Fantasy relevance.
Dawson probably sitting again Week 5 Dawson probably sitting again Week 5 Updated 10/9/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Browns kicker Phil Dawson missed practice on Friday and is doubtful for Sunday's Week 5 game in Buffalo. Billy Cundiff will likely make his third straight start for Dawson against the Bills. Analysis: Expect Cundiff to again get the start Week 5 with Dawson still on the mend. Whoever is kicking for the Browns Week 5 does not need to be active in any format as Cleveland's offense has been poor this season.
Dawson remains out Dawson remains out Updated 10/8/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Browns kicker Phil Dawson (ankle) missed practice again Thursday. He hasn't played in Cleveland's past two games. Billy Cundiff replaced Dawson the past two weeks. Analysis: Keep an eye on what happens with Dawson, but he and Cundiff would have minimal Fantasy value depending on who is the kicker against the Bills. The Browns offense doesn't score enough for the starting kicker to have much Fantasy value.
Dawson doesn't practice on Wednesday Dawson doesn't practice on Wednesday Updated 10/7/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Cleveland K Phil Dawson (right calf) did not participate in practice on Wednesday as the team prepares for its Week 5 game at Buffalo. Dawson has missed the past two games and is considered questionable for the team's upcoming game on Sunday. Analysis: Both Dawson and replacement kicker Billy Cundiff are just last resort options when active. Look for Cundiff to again get the start Week 5, but don't have him active outside of the deepest of formats.
Dawson ruled out Week 4 vs. Cincy Dawson ruled out Week 4 vs. Cincy Updated 10/4/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Cleveland K Phil Dawson has been listed as inactive for the team's Week 4 game against the Bengals with a right calf injury. Dawson also missed Week 3 with the same injury. Analysis: Billy Cundiff will get the start again Week 4 for the Browns but is not a recommended option as the Browns offense is not too good. Both Dawson and Cundiff are just last resort options when active.
Dawson, Lewis listed as doubtful Dawson, Lewis listed as doubtful Updated 10/2/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: The Browns may be without RB Jamal Lewis and K Phil Dawson for the second straight game. Lewis hurt his hamstring Sept. 20 against Denver and Dawson strained his right calf last week. Both were listed as doubtful on the injury report Friday, along with right guard Floyd Womack. None of the three practiced this week, but coach Eric Mangini wouldn't rule anyone out for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals (2-1). "I think there's a chance for all the guys," he said. "You want to go to the end to make sure you give them the best opportunity." Lewis was replaced last week by Jerome Harrison, who had 16 carries for 52 yards. Analysis: It sounds like Lewis and Dawson will be out again Sunday against the Bengals. You should plan on keeping both reserved, and Jerome Harrison will likely start against Cincinnati at RB with Cundiff again handling the kicking duties. Consider Harrison a sleeper against the Bengals if Lewis is out, and rookie James Davis will likely get some touches as well. Cundiff is not a good Fantasy option and should not be used in Week 4.
Lewis, Dawson miss practice Thursday Lewis, Dawson miss practice Thursday Updated 10/1/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Browns RB Jamal Lewis and kicker Phil Dawson missed their second straight day of practice. Lewis (hamstring) and Dawson (knee) missed last Sunday's game in Baltimore and may have to sit out this week against the Cincinnati Bengals. Lewis did not participate in Thursday's team workout, but he rode a stationary bike and did some stretching and running drills with one of the team's trainers. Dawson was not seen on the field. Browns coach Eric Mangini said it will be the end of the week before he knows if Lewis or Dawson can play. Kicker Billy Cundiff was signed one day before the Ravens game last week and booted a 29-yard field goal. Cundiff is not a good Fantasy option and should be used in Week 4.
Dawson inactive for Week 3 Dawson inactive for Week 3 Updated 9/27/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Cleveland K Phil Dawson (calf) is inactive for Week 3 at Baltimore. The Browns (0-2) have been held to just 26 points in their first two games, and Dawson has scored 14 of them. Analysis: To replace Dawson, Cleveland signed kicker Billy Cundiff, who spent four seasons with the Cowboys and one in New Orleans. He was released by Detroit on Sept. 5. Cundiff was one of five kickers the Browns worked out on Friday, when Dawson was added to the injury report. In 58 career regular-season games, Cundiff has made 60 of 83 field goal attempts and 100 of 101 PATs. Dawson has made 24 of 26 field goals in 19 career games against Baltimore. Two years ago, he kicked a 33-yarder in overtime to give the Browns a 33-30 overtime win in Baltimore. Dawson had forced OT by kicking a 51-yard field goal as time expired in regulation. Dawson is just a last resort Fantasy kicker when healthy. Cundiff is not recommended for Week 3's game against the Ravens.
Dawson to sit out of Week 3 game Dawson to sit out of Week 3 game Updated 9/26/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Phil Dawson will miss Sunday's Week 3 game against Baltimore. Dawson, who has had some of his best games against Baltimore, is sidelined with an injured right calf. Dawson questionable for Sunday Dawson questionable for Sunday Updated 9/25/2009
Phil Dawson, K CLE
News: Browns kicker Phil Dawson has an injured right calf. Dawson, who kicks with his right leg, was listed as questionable on Cleveland's injury report on Friday. He had not appeared on the report the previous two days. With Dawson's status up in the air for Sunday's game in Baltimore, the Browns worked out several free agent kickers, who practiced field goals and kickoffs as they were being videotaped by Cleveland personnel. Analysis: Dawson isn't starting in many leagues, and it's easy to see why: The Browns' offense doesn't give him a ton of chances to make kicks. He's owned in less than 10 percent of CBSSports.com leagues. Keep him off of Fantasy rosters.
