News: Chargers DB Paul Oliver grabbed his first interception of the season on Thursday night against the Raiders. He finished the game with seven tackles, five solo, in San Diego's 24-17 loss.
Analysis: Oliver had played in just five games prior to Thursday's outing, recording two tackles. Despite having his best game of the year, Oliver is not worth owning in Fantasy IDP leagues.
News: San Diego placed rookie LB Jonas Mouton on injured reserve Wednesday with a shoulder injury, ending his first NFL season. To take his roster spot, the Chargers signed safety Paul Oliver to a one-year contract.
Analysis: Oliver was with the Chargers from 2007 through last season before leaving as an unrestricted free agent. He signed with New Orleans before being released following training camp. Fantasy owners should continue to ignore him in all IDP formats.
News: The Saints placed RB Patrick Cobbs, WR Joe Morgan and S Paul Oliver on IR. Morgan is the most relevant of this group as the undrafted rookie free agent proved to be a weapon on offense and special teams during the preseason, but sustained a knee injury during practice last week requiring surgery.
Analysis: Oliver played in all 16 games over the last two seasons with the Chargers, but he wasn't able to stay healthy for a third straight campaign. He had little to no Fantasy value anyway, so continue to ignore him.
News: Chargers DB Paul Oliver recorded five solo tackles in the Week 12 win over the Colts. Oliver also secured a loose ball after Stephen Cooper forced Javarris James to fumble.
Analysis: Oliver has played well in the Chargers secondary and he continues to be apart of turnovers on the NFL's No. 1 defense. Still, he should be no more than a low-end fantasy option moving forward.
News: DB Paul Oliver made six tackles in the Chargers' 20-17 loss to St. Louis in Week 6. It was the third time this season that Oliver registered at least five tackles, and he now has 23 on the season.
Analysis: Oliver is well on his way to setting a career high for tackles, as last year he totaled 49 for the season. He still has no sacks or interceptions, so he is still a low-end Fantasy DB option in IDP leagues.
News: Chargers DB Paul Oliver led the team in tackles in the Week 5 loss in Oakland. Oliver registered a team-high eight tackles in the game and now has 17 on the season over five games.
Analysis: Oliver had a defensive fumble recovery and forced fumble on his rap sheet prior to Week 5 but he had not been tackling with any regularity. He cannot be counted upon for consistent production in Fantasy IDP leagues. Keep him grounded for Week 6 at St. Louis.
News: Chargers FS Paul Oliver will start while SS Steve Gregory serves a four-game suspension for violating the league's performance enhancing drug policy. FS C.J. Spillman and SS Quinton Teal will back up Oliver, who makes his first start in Week 5 against the Raiders.
Analysis: Gregory had 30 tackles and one interception before this suspension came down, so Oliver has some big shoes to fill. Consider him merely a stopgap Fantasy DB while he fills in for Gregory.
News:Brandon Siler, Larry English and Paul Oliver all recovered fumbles on Sunday in a Week 12 Chargers win over the Chiefs. Siler also led the team in tackles with nine. Oliver returned his fumble recovery 40 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.
Analysis: English has some marginal Fantasy value in IDP formats but Paul and Siler have zero value. The Chargers are at Cleveland Week 13.
News: Several members of San Diego's defense played well Sunday against Denver. DB Eric Weddle had 11 tackles, DB Quentin Jammer had two tackles, DB Antonio Cromartie had four tackles, LB Shaun Phillips had three tackles, LB Stephen Cooper had six tackles, DB Paul Oliver had two tackles and an interception and DL Luis Castillo had one tackle and an interception.
Analysis: Keep an eye on how the Chargers defenders do against the Colts. Hopefully they continue to play well in the playoffs and can have some success going into the offseason.
News: The Chargers have announced the inactives for their Week 5 game at Miami. Not in uniform will be: QB Charlie Whitehurst, DB Paul Oliver, LB Anthony Waters, WR Malcolm Floyd, FB Kris Wilson, LB Jyles Tucker and DT Ian Scott.
Analysis: No big Fantasy names here, so continue to ignore all of these guys.
News: The Chargers inactives for Week 11 at Jacksonville include QB Charlie Whitehurst (3rd QB), DB Paul Oliver, DB Eric Weddle, LB Anthony Waters, WR Malcolm Floyd, TE Scott Chandler and DL Luis Castillo.
Analysis: Keep all of these players reserved for Week 11 and continue to monitor their status for Week 12 against Baltimore.
News: The Chargers' list of inactives for Week 10 against the Colts includes QB Charlie Whitehurst, DB Paul Oliver, LB Anthony Waters, WR Malcom Floyd and TE Scott Chandler.
Analysis: These players don't contribute enough statistically to have value in Fantasy. The Chargers visit the Jaguars in Week 11.
News: For San Diego, third QB Charlie Whitehurst (coach's decision), LB Anthony Waters (coach' decision), WR Malcolm Floyd (coach's decision), CB Paul Oliver (coach's decision), WR Craig Davis (ankle) and LB Shaun Phillips (groin) were all named among the inactives for San Diego's Week 9 game against Minnesota. For the Vikings, third QB Kelly Holcomb (neck), DB Antoine Winfield (hamstring), DB Mike Doss (coach's decision), FB Naufahu Tahi (coach's decision), TE Garrett Mills (coach's decision), WR Troy Williamson (personal) and DE Jayme Mitchell (coach's decision) were also named inactive.
Analysis: Only Phillips, Williamson and Winfield have any real Fantasy value in this group, but all three were questionable coming into Week 9 and you should have had replacements at the ready.
News: The Chargers' list of inactives for Week 8 against the Jets includes QB Charlie Whitehurst, DB Paul Oliver, LB Anthony Waters, DL Jamal Williams, WR Malcom Floyd, WR Craig Davis and TE Scott Chandler.
Analysis: None of these players accrue enough statistics to deserve consideration in Fantasy even when active. The Chargers visit the Vikings in Week 9.
News: Notable inactives for the Chargers-Broncos Week 5 game include: Chargers QB Charlie Whitehurst (No. 3/emergency QB), CB Paul Oliver, FB Andrew Pinnock, FB/WR Legedu Naanee, LB Anthony Waters, TE Jeff Chandler and WR Eric Parker. For the Broncos, DB Hamza Abdullah, RB Mike Bell, DB Steve Cargile, TE Stephen Alexander, WR Javon Walker, DT Antwan Burton and DE Simeon Rice are inactive.
Analysis: Aside from Walker, who is nursing a knee injury, and Bell, who is a backup in Denver's RB corps, none of these inactive Chargers or Broncos are worth owning in Fantasy play.
News: Chargers WR Eric Parker (toe), QB Charlie Whitehurst (3rd QB), RB Paul Oliver, RB Andrew Pinnock, LB Anthony Waters, LB Matt Wilhelm and TE Scott Chandler are all inactive for Week 4 vs. Kansas City.
Analysis: Parker is hoping to return in early October from a toe injury, but he likely won't be back until later in the month. Continue to track his progress. He could be a decent waiver wire pick-up when he returns. He is pretty much the only inactive San Diego player worth using in Fantasy leagues when active. Make sure to keep these players reserved for Week 4.
News: The Chargers inactives for Week 3 include QB Charlie Whitehurst, DB Paul Oliver, TE Legedu Naanee, LB Anthony Waters, LB Matt Wilhelm, TE Scott Chandler and WR Eric Parker.
Analysis: Keep all these players reserved against the Packers.
News: The San Diego Chargers have announced their inactives for Week 2 at New England. TE Scott Chandler, DT Brandon McKinney, CB Paul Oliver, WR Eric Parker (toe), FB Andrew Pinnock (hamstring) and LB Anthony Waters are all inactive. QB Charlie Whitehurst will also serve as the No. 3 emergency quarterback.
Analysis: McKinney, Oliver and Waters are all useless from a Fantasy perspective in IDP leagues. The Chargers play the Packers in Green Bay in Week 3.
News: Notable inactives from the Chargers-Bears Week 1 game include: Chargers QB Charlie Whitehurst (No. 3/emergency QB), CB Paul Oliver, LB Anthony Waters, LB Brandon Siler, OT Roman Oben, TE Scott Chandler, WR Eric Parker and DT Brandon McKinney. For the Bears, QB Kyle Orton (No. 3/emergency QB), CB Corey Graham, FB Lousaka Polite, DB Kevin Payne, OL Josh Beekman, TE Greg Olsen, WR Mike Hass and DT Anthony Adams are inactive.
Analysis: Parker will be out for several weeks, and Olsen is on a week-to-week medical watch with a knee injury. The rest of these players shouldn't be considered for Fantasy use.
