Giants defense deals with injuries in Week 6

(10/10/2013) The Giants are missing a handful of defensive contributors in Week 6 against the Bears Thursday, but five of eight players listed on the injury report from that side of the ball were able to play.

Defensive back Terrell Thomas (knee), defensive linemen Damontre Moore (hamstring) and Linval Joseph (ankle), and linebackers Mark Herzlich (toe) and Zak DeOssie (back) were all able to play through their injuries Thursday. 


Six Giants have good shot to play Thursday

They include defensive tackle Linval Joseph (ankle) and receiver Louis Murphy (ankle), who are questionable, and cornerback Terrell Thomas (knee), linebacker Mark Herzlich (toe) and long snapper Zak DeOssie (back), who are probable.

(10/6/2013) Giants defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins (Achilles, knee), tackle David Diehl (thumb), linebacker Mark Herzlich (toe), defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul (knee), defensive tackle Shaun Rogers (back), safety Cooper Taylor (shoulder), cornerback Terrell Thomas (knee) and linebacker Jacquian Williams (knee) were all cleared to play Week 5 vs. Philadelphia. Jenkins, who was listed as questionable, was the only player not probable.

Five Giants deemed probable against Eagles

(10/4/2013) Giants LB Mark Herzlich, DT Shaun Rogers, S Cooper Taylor, CB Terrell Thomas and LB Jacquian Williams are considered probable Week 5 against the Eagles. 

Herzlich, Rogers and Thomas were all limited during practice, while Williams and Taylor were able to participate in full.

(9/29/2013) X-rays were negative for Giants linebacker Mark Herzlich, according to The Star-Ledger. The doctors examined Herzlich's toe, and he was wearing a protective boot as a precaution.

(9/29/2013) Giants linebacker Mark Herzlich is headed for X-rays on his right foot, according to the New York Daily News. Herzlich, who was wearing a walking boot, had had a team-high eight tackles (seven solo) and one pass defense in a 31-7 loss Sunday at Kansas City.

Giants defense lack standout performers Week 3

(9/23/2013) The Giants defense didn't have a strong showing in a 38-0 loss Week 3 at Carolina, which meant it didn't have many individual standout performers on defense.

Safety Ryan Mundy had a team-high nine tackles (five solo). Defensive tackle Linval Joseph (five solo) and linebacker Mark Herzlich (four solo) both finished with eight tackles. Cornerback Prince Amukamara had six tackles (four solo) and one pass defense.

The Giants managed only one sack from Mathias Kiwanuka, who had four solo tackles. Defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul had five solo tackles (one tackle for loss). 

Cornerback Aaron Ross, who started for the injured Corey Webster, had the team's lone interception.


Mark Herzlich confident he can take hold of starting MLB job

(9/19/2013) With Dan Connor on season-ending injured reserve, Giants linebacker Mark Herzlich feels confident heading into Week 3 at Carolina he can emerge with the starting middle linebacker job, according to The Star Ledger.

"I think I can grab hold of it," Herzlich said. "Regardless of whether I'm fighting for a starting spot or securing it or whatever, it's every play that's going to have to be right. Assignment sound and make plays. That's one of the big things that you do, you take the next step and make the play when it's there."


Giants announce linebacker depth chart

(9/4/2013) The Giants released their depth chart Wednesday for the season opener against Cowboys. On defense, the starting linebacker corps consists of Keith Rivers (SLB), Dan Connor (MLB) and Spencer Paysinger (WLB). 

Mark Herzlich is listed as the backup to Connor and Jacquian Williams is the backup to Paysinger.

(7/14/2013) Giants linebacker Mark Herzlich started at middle linebacker during OTAs and minicamp and is expected to open training camp in the starting lineup as well, according to ESPN.

"Very commanding," Fewell said of what Herzlich showed during the offseason training. "He's taken a leadership role out there and I think he has some good respect from his teammates in some of the things he's done in the OTAs. Obviously, we want to find out what happens when the pads come on."


Herzlich to start with Blackburn out
