Agent: Linebacker Jason Worilds opts to retire after five seasons

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(3/11/2015) Free agent linebacker Jason Worilds announced Tuesday he is stepping away from football, according to his agent Jason Bernstein.

The former Steelers linebacker released a statement Tuesday saying, "I appreciate all of the interest from the organizations that have reached out to us the past few days. With that being said, after much thought and consideration I have chosen to step away from football as I have opted to pursue other interests."

Worilds was rumored to be a target for the Titans and reunite with former defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau. Worilds totaled 144 tackles and 25 1/2-sacks in five seasons with the Steelers.

Report: Titans interested in Devin McCourty, Jason Worilds, Cary Williams

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(3/8/2015) The Titans are interested in upgrading their entire defense, it looks like.

According to The Tennessean, the Titans have expressed interest in bringing in free agents safety Devin McCourty, outside linebacker Jason Worilds and cornerback Cary Williams

McCourty is the top free agent safety in this year's group, though the Eagles and Giants are looking like the top bidders for his services

Worilds is comfortable with associate head coach Dick LeBeau as he played under him in Pittsburgh. He would likely mesh well into what the Titans are looking to do on that side of the ball.

Williams has familiarity with the Titans as they selected him in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL draft. Williams is also reportedly receiving interest from the Seahawks, Jets and Ravens.

The Titans are also hopeful of bringing back outside linebacker Derrick Morgan with a new deal.

Report: Steelers to let OLB Jason Worilds hit free agency

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(2/25/2015) The Steelers will allow outside linebacker Jason Worilds to hit free agency, according to a report from ESPN.com

The Steelers have decided against using the transition tag on Worilds, electing to let the open market decide how much his value is worth. Worilds totaled 59 tackles and 7.5 sacks during the 2014 season.

The deadline for all teams to use the franchise or transition tag is Monday.

Worilds was taken by Pittsburgh in the second round of the 2010 NFL draft out of Virginia Tech. He's spent all five of his NFL seasons with the Steelers.

Steelers LB Jason Worilds unsatisfied with new role

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/16/2014) Steelers linebacker Jason Worilds isn't complaining about being used in pass coverage - just stating what he sees as the truth. And he's not thrilled about losing opportunities to perform his specialty - rushing the quarterback.

"I would think they understand that," Worilds told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I would hope they know that I rush the passer, so if they put me out of position, they do it knowing that they're taking me out of position to make plays.

"Some of the things that we're doing, some of the positions that they're playing [us] is kind of to help the defense, more so than from, I guess, a schematic standpoint with me individually rushing. ... It if helps the defense ... I'm going to do that for my team."

The Steelers have struggled defensively, however. They rank fourth-last in the AFC with 139 points allowed. They rank 23rd in the league with just nine sacks. Worilds has two sacks this season after recording eight in 2013.

LeBeau: LB Jason Worilds not to blame for sad sack total

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/3/2014) Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau is not about to blame one player for his team's inability to sack the quarterback this season. Pittsburgh has just four sacks in their last three games, but he is not pointing the finger at linebacker Jason Worilds, who has just one.

"[Worilds] is playing hard," LeBeau told ESPN. "As a defense we have to get better in that area, but I would not hang it on anyone personally." LeBeau added that the Steelers came close to recording a few sacks of Tampa Bay quarterback Mike Glennon in Week 4 before falling short.

Worilds racked up eight sacks in 2013.

by Larry Hartstein | Senior Analyst
(6/15/2014) Steelers transition player Jason Worilds rejected the team's multi-year contract offer, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The team won't go any higher, the report said, so 26-year-old outside linebacker can either reconsider or play 2014 on his $9.7 million transition tag.

Worilds had 63 tackles, eight sacks and two forced fumbles last year.

The team and Worilds have made progress in negotiating a long-term deal and "that will be the goal of both parties now," La Canfora wrote.

LaMarr Woodley's situation tied to Jason Worilds'

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(3/4/2014) The Steelers designated linebacker Jason Worilds with the transition tag on Monday, meaning they will have the right to match any offer another team makes to the linebacker this spring. But his future will affect LaMarr Woodley, who is on the chopping block based on his salary and recent injury track record.

Woodley missed 14 games over the past three seasons, but he would count nearly $14 million in dead money on the salary cap, a problem since the Steelers are tight against the salary cap as it is. But the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review says that if the Steelers keep Worilds then they'll likely release Woodley.

Worilds had eight sacks and 63 total tackles with a pair of forced fumbles, all career highs.

Getting the franchise tag were Saints tight end Jimmy Graham, Jets kicker Nick Folk, Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy and Redskins outside linebacker Brian Orakpo. Browns center Alex Mack and Steelers outside linebacker Jason Worilds were designated as transition players.

The deadline for tagging players passed at 4 p.m. ET.

Jason Worilds not expected back in Pittsburgh

by Larry Hartstein | Senior Analyst
(2/27/2014) Outside linebacker Jason Worilds is unlikely to re-sign with the Steelers and could command $6 million to $7 million annually if he hits free agency, reports ESPN's Adam Caplan. Worilds, who turns 26 on Monday, had eight sacks and two forced fumbles last season.

The Steelers could keep LaMarr Woodley and Jason Worilds

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(2/12/2014) Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert suggested the team could find a way to keep both LaMarr Woodley and Jason Worilds on the roster this offseason. Both are scheduled to be free agents in March.

Where Colbert slowed down on the optimism is when discussing Woodley's injuries -- he's missed 14 games over the past three seasons. NFL.com also noted that Woodley would count $14 million in dead money on the salary cap, a problem since they're projected to be $10 million over the cap.

Worilds also figures to be in high demand after his best season. He had eight sacks and 63 total tackles with a pair of forced fumbles, all career highs.

Jason Worilds seeking starter assurance

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(2/1/2014) Steelers outside linebacker and impending free agent Jason Worilds would prefer to stay in Pittsburgh, but only if promised a starting job, per the National Football Post.

"If the circumstances are right, for sure," Worilds said. "They haven't been right for me in the past. I wouldn't want to fall back into (not starting) again.

"I've just been patient and (waiting to) see how the Steelers view me. The biggest thing is just being in the right situation. ... It's been rough just to get on the field, especially when you probably could have helped the team in years past, but you just weren't given an opportunity. The opportunity came this year, and I did well with it."

He did indeed. Worilds was placed in the starting lineup on Oct. 20 with the Steelers at 1-4. He helped the team finish at 8-8 with 63 tackles and eight sacks, including six in his last eight games.

Worilds became a starter in late October and enjoyed his finest season. He recorded career-highs with 43 tackles and eight sacks.

Steelers owner won't get specific about offseason plans

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(1/8/2014) Steelers owners Dan Rooney II said Wednesday his team should have made the playoffs, but declined to get specific in regard to any offseason plans, per the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

The Steelers have 21 unrestricted free agents, including emerging linebacker Jason Worilds. Rooney would not elaborate about whether he will make a strong attempt to sign Worilds. Rooney also said he hopes to find bargains in free agency, but would not discuss particular players.

Steelers injury report features nearly all probable

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12/27/2013) Linebacker Terence Garvin, who made his first start in Week 16, won't make his second on Sunday. He is the lone Steelers player ruled out for the game against the Browns. Fellow linebacker Jason Worilds (abdomen) is questionable while the other injured are probable.

They are guard David DeCastro (back), linebacker Jarvis Jones (illness), defensive end Brett Keisel (foot) and wide receiver Markus Wheaton (foot). All were full participants in Friday practice.
