Rodger Saffold officially re-signs with Rams

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/13/2014) After failing a physical and having his contract voided with the Raiders, free-agent offensive lineman Rodger Saffold ended up where he started, signing a five-year contract with the Rams Thursday.

The deal will be worth $31.7 million, more than $10 million less than he would have made with the Raiders. His contract eventually voided due to concerns about a shoulder injury that will require surgery at some point. He is still receiving $19.5 million guaranteed from the Rams, who are not concerned about the injury, according to USA Today.

"We have a shoulder specialist who said he's 100% fine," Saffold's agent Alan Herman said. "And we have the Rams, who passed him on his exit physical and then provided a significant amount of guaranteed money to prove they were fine with it."

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/12/2014) The Raiders' voided the contract of free-agent signee Rodger Saffold Wednesday, after it was discovered he needed shoulder surgery, reports NFL.com.

According to the report, team owner Mark Davis vetoed the deal after finding out Saffold would need the surgery during a physical. Saffold is expected to be ready in time for the start of training camp, which is enough for the Rams to have already signed him to a five-year deal shortly after the Raiders' deal fell through.

Report: After failed physical, Rodger Saffold to return to St. Louis

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/12/2014) Just minutes after the Raiders announced he failed a physical and would not be signing with them, offensive lineman Rodger Saffold found a familiar home to return to. According to ESPN.com, Saffold will be returning to the Rams on a five-year deal, the terms of which are not yet known.

The Raiders' deal with Saffold fell apart over concerned about the health of Saffold's shoulder, after he could not pass a physical. The Rams reportedly have no concerns about the injury, however, and will bring Saffold back to where he spent the first four seasons of his career.

Saffold has struggled with injuries throughout his career, with his rookie season in 2010 representing his lone 16-game season. He has played 31 of a possible 48 games over the last three seasons.

Saffold has a history of injuries, missing 17 games in his first four seasons with knee, pectoral and head injuries. The specific nature of the issue that caused him to fail the physical is not yet known, but it will end up costing him more than $20 million in guaranteed money.

According to the team's announcement, Saffold will not be joining the Raiders, though it is possible a restructured deal could still be worked out.

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

Rams haven't made offer to Rodger Saffold

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/25/2014) While the Rams say offensive lineman Rodger Saffold is their top priority in free agency, they've yet to make him a contract offer, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The team is expected to make one soon.

St. Louis' effort to re-sign Saffold before free agency opens March 11 likely will "go right down to the wire," the paper said. Several teams are interested in Saffold, who can play tackle or guard.

Rams won't use franchise tag

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/25/2014) The Rams won't use the franchise tag this year, reports ProFootballTalk.com. Retaining offensive lineman Rodger Saffold is a priority, but general manager Les Snead said, “We will try to get Saffold done, just through natural, regular negotiations."

The Rams view Saffold as a guard, although he's mostly played tackle in his career. Tagging him would be way too expensive, the report said. The team has no other high-profile free agents.

Rams prioritizing Rodger Saffold

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/23/2014) The Rams are making the re-signing of Rodger Saffold a priority, reports the team's website. Saffold played both offensive tackle positions and right guard last season.

“I think ultimately, he’s going to be an outstanding guard in this league,” coach Jeff Fisher said. “That doesn’t mean to say that he couldn’t play either tackle, because this year, he did. He played some really good football at the tackle spot.”

Saffold just completed his four-year rookie deal.

Rodger Saffold key to Rams' offseason

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1/14/2014) Rams offensive lineman Rodger Saffold "is going to be an important domino to the rest of the offseason," reports ESPN.com. The impending free agent played both tackle spots and right guard in 2013, and re-signing him would give the Rams "the versatility and flexibility to focus elsewhere early in the draft," the report said.

St. Louis wants to retain Saffold, but the question is at what cost. Injuries limited him to 22 games the past two seasons.
