News: The 49ers announced they signed quarterback Josh Johnson to a two-year deal to back up Alex Smith. Johnson, who played for Niners coach Jim Harbaugh in college at San Diego, started five games in four seasons with Tampa Bay. He completed 96 of 177 passes for 1,042 yards, five touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 26 career appearances.
Analysis: Johnson might become a better passer while reunited with Harbaugh, but he won't play much with Smith and Colin Kaepernick on the roster with him. Don't consider him in Fantasy play.
News: San Francisco signed quarterback Josh Johnson to a two-year deal on Thursday. He rejoins his former coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh was his coach at the University of San Diego. Josh is a promising young player that has experience in our offensive system, 49ers general manager Trent Baalke told FOXSports.com. He is a skilled athlete with good arm talent. Josh has shown promise in limited action, both as a back-up and starter at the NFL level."
Analysis: Johnson, 25, has passed for 1,042 career yards with five touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He started one game last season, and completed 19 of 36 passes for 246 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in nine games. He'll be the backup in San Fran, which means he'll go undrafted in Fantasy leagues.
News: Tampa Bay QB Josh Johnson completed 1 of 2 passes for three yards during the Buccaneers' 41-14 loss to Jacksonville in Week 14. Johnson, who entered the game during Tampa's final drive in the fourth quarter, also threw an interception -- his second of the season.
Analysis: With QB Josh Freeman back in the starting lineup after missing one game with a shoulder injury, Johnson was forced back to the bench. He has been battling a shoulder injury himself and should not be considered a worthwhile Fantasy option as long as Freeman is healthy.
News: With QB Josh Freeman expected to return in Week 14 against Jacksonville, QB Josh Johnson will head back to the bench after one game as the team's replacement starter. Johnson passed for 229 yards and a touchdown in a 38-19 loss to Carolina last Sunday.
Analysis: Like Freeman, Johnson isn't necessarily 100 percent either. Johnson missed one play last week after dislocating his right shoulder. Trainers popped the shoulder back into place and Johnson returned to the field. "He's definitely getting the iron-man award of the year," Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris said. If Freeman returns as expected, Fantasy owners should leave Johnson on waivers in all formats for the rest of the year.
News: Tampa Bay QB Josh Johnson was not successful in filling in for injured starter Josh Freeman on Sunday of Week 13 at home against Carolina. The Panthers dominated Tampa Bay en route to a 38-19 win as Johnson struggled from the outset. Johnson's saving grace was a 23-yard touchdown strike to Dezmon Briscoe in the game's waning moments. Otherwise, Johnson struggled all game. He finished 16 of 27 for 229 yards with the touchdown and one interception. Johnson did lead Tampa Bay in rushing with five carries for 45 yards.
Analysis: The Buccaneers will head into Week 14 at Jacksonville with a question mark at quarterback. Freeman missed Sunday's game with a right shoulder injury and he might be a question once again for the game against the Jaguars. Regardless, Johnson was mediocre, at best, against the Panthers Week 13. Fantasy owners do not need to consider starting Johnson, whether or not he's Tampa's starter, Week 14.
News: Tampa Bay is starting QB Josh Johnson on Sunday of Week 13 against Carolina. The Buccaneers ruled Josh Freeman out for the game due to his right shoulder injury. Johnson last threw a pass Week 10 against Houston when he went 0 for 2 with a fumble lost.
Analysis: Johnson's most extensive work came during the 2009 season. He started four games and threw four touchdowns to eight interceptions in six games. QBs have accumulated 17 passing touchdowns and just nine interceptions in 11 games against Carolina this season. Johnson as starter makes him, at best, a No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: Bucs QB Josh Johnson took the reps in practice Thursday with QB Josh Freeman nursing a shoulder injury. The Bucs are holding out hope that Freeman will be able to start Week 13 vs. Carolina, but have full confidence in Johnson. Josh has been around here for four years and hes matured quite a bit, coach Raheem Morris said. Being around him four years Ive always had a great appreciation for the way he prepares and the way he practices. Obviously we are pulling for Josh Freeman and we feel good about the progress he made from (Wednesday to Thursday), but if not we have a tremendous amount of confidence in Josh Johnson and the game plan that he will execute.
Analysis: Johnson's most extensive work came during the 2009 season. He started four games and threw four touchdowns to eight interceptions in six games. QBs have accumulated 17 passing touchdowns and just nine interceptions in 11 games against Carolina this season. Even if Johnson gets the start, he is at best a No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: Buccaneers backup QB Josh Johnson came into Week 12's game at Tennessee to take one snap in the second quarter of a 23-17 loss. Johnson ran the ball for six yards on his lone play of the game.
Analysis: The Bucs will use Johnson once in awhile in a Wildcat formation, but for the most part, he stays on the bench where he does no good for Fantasy owners. Barring an injury to starter Josh Freeman, Johnson can be ignored in all Fantasy formats.
News: Buccaneers QB Josh Johnson saw some action in Week 5 against the 49ers. He entered in the fourth quarter with Tampa Bay down big and completed 1 of 2 passes for 7 yards in the 48-3 loss.
Analysis: Johnson has been used sparingly so far this season as his prowess is more for running the ball than throwing it. As long as Josh Freeman is healthy in Tampa Bay, Johnson will remain someone to avoid in Fantasy.
News: Tampa Bay backup QB Josh Johnson showed up on the injury report on Saturday for the Monday night game against Indianapolis, reports ESPN.com. Johnson has an ankle injury and is officially listed as probable after practicing on Saturday.
Analysis: Johnson is just Josh Freeman's backup for the Bucs. Johnson either gets into the game when Freeman is injured or in mop-up duty. His Fantasy value will only increase if Freeman is out for a long period, and even then he won't have much appeal. Continue to ignore Johnson in Fantasy.
News: Bucs QB Josh Johnson was in for a few series in the third quarter Week 1 against the Lions as Josh Freeman was dealing with leg cramps. Johnson completed 1 of 3 passes for 7 yards and rushed for 2 yards before Freeman came back into the game.
Analysis: Johnson either gets into the game when Freeman is injured or in mop-up duty. His Fantasy value will only increase if Freeman is out for a long period, and even then he won't have much appeal. Continue to ignore Johnson in Fantasy.
News: With the win well in-hand in the Week 16 matchup with the Seahawks, Tampa Bay backup QB Josh Johnson saw some playing time. He came in for Josh Freeman midway through the fourth quarter and managed to complete both of his pass attempts for a total of 15 yards.
Analysis: Johnson is more mobile than Freeman, but he is in line to be the team's backup for years to come. While he plays well when coming in at the end of games, he warrants no Fantasy value unless something happens to Freeman.
News: Backup QB Josh Johnson, who the Buccaneers like to use in special packages, got one snap Week 15 against the Lions. He completed a 1-yard pass to Sammie Stroughter.
Analysis: Johnson will get a token snap every game or two, but like most backup quarterbacks, he's not going to make a real impact unless the starting quarterback -- in this case, Josh Freeman -- gets hurt. You can leave Johnson on waivers in Fantasy.
News: Buccaneers backup QB Josh Johnson entered for one play Week 10 against the Panthers, rushing for 14 yards. He hasn't attempted a pass since Week 6.
Analysis: The Buccaneers bring in Johnson whenever they go with a Wildcat look, so his one carry Sunday wasn't a big surprise. He's the clear backup to Josh Freeman and isn't worth owning in Fantasy.
News: Tampa Bay QB Josh Johnson saw late action in the Week 6 blowout loss to the Saints. Johnson entered for Josh Freeman with the game out of hand and he threw his first incomplete pass of the year. Entering the game 8 for 8 for 71 yards, Johnson went 2 for 4 on Sunday against the Saints for 17 yards. He also ran the ball one time for 11 yards and finished just 7 yards shy of Cadillac Williams for the team lead in rushing.
Analysis: Johnson is not going to start the Week 7 game against the Rams. He was simply in the game late because the Bucs had no chance at a comeback at that point. Johnson has done well in small doses this season but by no means has to be on Fantasy rosters right now. He should be ignored for the Week 7 game.
News: Buccaneers backup QB Josh Johnson took two snaps in a Week 5 win over the Bengals as he replaced starter Josh Freeman following a big hit. Johnson completed both of the short passes he attempted, finishing with four yards.
Analysis: Johnson sees limited action as the No. 2 QB in Tampa Bay and he can continue to be ignored in Fantasy play for the time being. The Buccaneers host New Orleans in Week 6.
News: Bucs QB Josh Johnson was able to get in the game and complete all six of his attempts in the Week 3 loss to the Steelers. He came in to throw a pass in the second quarter (after QB Josh Freeman was sacked and came out of the game) to WR Mike Williams, who fumbled. Johnson did not come in again until late in the fourth quarter. He finished with 67 yards.
Analysis: Johnson drove the Bucs down the field against the Steelers prevent defense. Johnson was only in the game because the Steelers owned a large lead. We don't anticipate Johnson having an impact in Week 5 (after the bye) against the Bengals unless Freeman gets injured. Johnson should remain off of Fantasy rosters.
News: Buccaneers QB Josh Johnson, who started in place of injured starter Josh Freeman (thumb), connected with FB Earnest Graham for a touchdown pass during Saturday's preseason game against the Jaguars. He led drives of 48 and 55 yards that resulted in field goals, and an 81-yarder that culminated with a 2-yard pass to Graham for six points. Johnson finished 9 of 14 for 122 yards, running the ball once for 18 yards.
Analysis: Johnson has had a pretty good showing in the preseason, completing 23 of 37 passes for 307 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. But he's backing up Freeman this season, who is on schedule to be ready for Week 1. As a backup QB on a team that isn't expected to put up big numbers, he has little if any Fantasy value. He can be ignored on Draft Day.
News:Josh Johnson doesn't have any misconceptions about his chances of winning Tampa Bay's starting quarterback job in the final two preseason games. The Buccaneers are Josh Freeman's team. No matter how well Johnson fills in while the second-year pro is sidelined with a broken thumb, the depth chart will not change unless Freeman is unable to play in the regular season opener on Sept. 12. What Johnson can do, though, is bolster the club's confidence in his ability to lead the offense if Freeman does not heal as quickly as expected to face the Cleveland Browns in the season-opener Sept. 12. "It's always that chance. In this league as a backup, you're one snap away. That's the mindset. ... I'm just playing it by ear," Johnson said. "But I'll be ready for Week 1 if I'm called upon, just as the case is right now. We'll see what happens."
Analysis: The third-year pro, a fifth-round draft pick in 2008 out of San Diego, is confident in his ability. He made the first four starts of his career last season, replacing an ineffective and banged-up Byron Leftwich while the Bucs were stumbling to an 0-7 start that hastened the timetable to play Freeman as a rookie. Despite going 0-4, completing just 54 percent of his passes and throwing for twice as many interceptions (eight) as touchdowns (four), Johnson showed enough in losses to Washington, Philadelphia, Carolina and New England that the Bucs don't feel it's necessary to have a seasoned veteran on the bench behind their 22-year-old starter. Johnson, who will start Saturday night's exhibition against Jacksonville, is much more comfortable taking over this time. "I'm just a lot more prepared for it. When it happened last year, there was a lot of turmoil going on. It happened at a different time of the season. We were 0-3," the 24-year-old Johnson said. Bucs coach Raheem Morris remains confident that Freeman, injured when his right hand struck the helmet of a pass rusher, will be able to practice the week of the season opener and face the Browns. Johnson is probably not worth drafting and would merely be a stopgap Fantasy option in the event he gets a start.
News: Tampa Bay RB Chris Pressley, TE John Gilmore and backup QB Josh Johnson all went without stats in the Week 16 win in overtime over the Saints.
Analysis: None of these players ever contributes enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers.
News: Tampa Bay had several players fail to stat in the Week 14 thrashing at the hands of the New York Jets. Those players are as follows: RB Chris Pressley, RB Kareem Huggins, TE Jerramy Stevens, backup QB Josh Johnson and WR Terrence Nunn.
Analysis: Pressley won't touch the ball enough to warrant Fantasy use. Keep him off of rosters. The same goes with the other players listed above. Tampa Bay plays at Seattle Week 15.
News: Buccaneers WR Brian Clark, TE John Gilmore, QB Josh Johnson and WR Yamon Figurs all dressed for Tampa Bay's Week 13 loss to Carolina but failed to record an offensive stat.
Analysis: None of these players warrant Fantasy use because of their limited or non-existent playing time. Keep them all on waivers and off of rosters for Week 14 and beyond.
News: Tampa Bay RB Chris Pressley was given the start at FB in the Week 12 game at Atlanta. He did not touch the ball in the game and was used as a blocker. Tight end John Gilmore and backup QB Josh Johnson also did not stat in the game.
Analysis: Pressley won't touch the ball enough to warrant Fantasy use. Keep him off of rosters. The same goes with the other two players listed above. Tampa Bay plays at Carolina in Week 13.
News: Buccaneers RB Clifton Smith, WR Sammie Stroughter, WR Maurice Stovall, FB Chris Pressley, TE John Gilmore and QB Josh Johnson all dressed for Week 11 vs. the Saints but failed to record a stat.
Analysis: Smith is a nice special teams guy for the Bucs but has no Fantasy value as a third-string RB at best. Ignore him and the rest of these guys in Week 12 at the Falcons.
News: Buccaneers RB Clifton Smith, WR Brian Clark and QB Josh Johnson all dressed for Week 10 at Miami but failed to record a stat.
Analysis: Smith is a nice special teams guy for the Bucs but has no Fantasy value as a third-string RB at best. Ignore him and the rest of these guys in Week 11 vs. New Orleans.
News: Buccaneers RB Earnest Graham, TE Jerramy Stevens, WR Brian Clark and QB Josh Johnson all dressed for a win over the Packers in Week 9, but did not record an offensive stat.
Analysis: None of these players have any Fantasy value heading into Week 10 at Miami.
News: Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris announced Wednesday that QB Josh Freeman will take the reins of the offense and start the team's Week 9 game vs. the Packers. He'll replace Josh Johnson, who struggled in several starts in place of veteran Byron Leftwich. Morris cites the bye week as a good time to give Freeman the nod so he can have some extra time to prepare. Freeman replaced Josh Johnson on the last two drives of Tampa Bay's Week 7 loss to the Patriots and completed 2 of 4 passes for 16 yards and was sacked twice. He also ran once for five yards.
Analysis: Johnson's action in five games (four starts) produced 685 passing yards, four touchdowns, eight interceptions and 148 rush yards. He should not be owned in any Fantasy leagues now that he's been benched.
News: Buccaneers QB Josh Johnson completed 9 of 26 passes for 156 yards before being pulled in a Week 7 loss to the Patriots in London. Johnson also ran once for seven yards.
Analysis: Johnson's job might be in jeopardy after this move, although his replacement, Josh Freeman, didn't do a whole lot, either. The Bucs are off in Week 8, so the front office will have an extra week to think things over. Whoever wins the job, they won't be worth using in Fantasy play.
News: Tampa Bay QB Josh Johnson did not play well in a loss to Carolina in Week 6. In an ugly game, Johnson threw for 147 yards on 11 of 17 passing with no touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed eight times for 45 yards. Johnson had trouble holding onto the ball. He fumbled five times in the game and recovered one. Only one of the fumbles were lost, however.
Analysis: Johnson's interception could have been timed worse for the Bucs as it robbed them of any emotional lift coming out of halftime. He is only in his third game in the NFL as a starter but so far he's not been worth using in Fantasy play. That is for sure. That should not change against a tough Patriots defense Week 7. Leave him on your bench or worse.
News: Buccaneers QB Josh Johnson completed 26 of 50 passes for 240 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions in a Week 5 loss to the Eagles. He also led Tampa Bay in rushing with five carries for 40 yards.
Analysis: Johnson felt heat most of the afternoon on Sunday as the Eagles applied their usual pressure defense. The Bucs couldn't get anything going on the ground, which also didn't help Johnson's cause. In Week 6, Johnson should hold on to his starting job as Tampa Bay hosts Carolina. He will continue to barely have any Fantasy value for the time being.
News: Bucs coach Raheem Morris is committed to QB Josh Johnson, even as rookie first-round pick Josh Freeman continues to sit. "[Johnson] has earned the right to be named the starter," Morris said Monday. "He's done a good job managing the game. He's going through his growing pains, but I've got to give him his opportunity. I can't base everything on what we want to see from Josh Freeman." Johnson finished 13 of 22 for 106 yards with a touchdown and one interception in his first start Sunday at Washington. He also rushed seven times for 41 yards.
Analysis: It appears like Johnson will start at Philadelphia, but don't plan on using him in most Fantasy leagues. Freeman doesn't appear to be starting any time soon, so ignore him in standard formats as well.
News: Bucs QB Josh Johnson wasnt overly impressive in his NFL debut as a starter during a Week 4 loss at Washington. Johnson kept his team in the game, however, but that was more a problem with the Redskins offense than Tampa picking up large chunks of yardage. That said, Johnson did throw his first NFL TD pass in the 1st quarter to get the scoring started. He found Antonio Bryant in the end zone for a 8-yard TD pass. Johnson finished 13 of 22 for 106 yards with a touchdown and one interception. He also rushed seven times for 41 yards.
Analysis: It wasnt a fantastic performance for Johnson, but it was still better than anything the Bucs had before. The team is in shambles as they couldnt even beat Washington, a team which lost to Detroit in Week 3. Still, Johnson looks like he has some promise as a dual-threat QB. He could eventually become a viable Fantasy option but we dont think that will happen just yet in Week 5 when Tampa plays at Philadelphia. Keep him on waivers, or your bench if youve picked him up already, but dont use him against a tough Eagles defense.
News:Josh Johnson doesn't consider himself the answer to all of Tampa Bay's problems. The second-year quarterback just wants to do his part to get the winless Buccaneers on track. "It's not my job to be the savior of this team. My job is to come in and help us get wins," the 23-year-old said Wednesday, looking ahead to his first NFL start against the struggling Washington Redskins. "We are talented. We've just got to put it altogether and become one cohesive unit. ... Offense, defense, special teams. If we all become one, we'll win games and it won't just be on one guy."
Analysis: Johnson, a fifth-round draft pick in 2008 who was inactive for all 16 games as a rookie, takes over an offense that managed just 86 yards total offense during last week's 24-0 loss to the New York Giants. He replaced Byron Leftwich, who completed 7 of 16 passes for 22 yards and an interception, in the fourth quarter, and wound up leads the Bucs in passing and rushing despite only playing one series. He'll be prepared for the matchup at the Redskins, but it's not favorable for him. Thus, keep him on your Fantasy bench for the foreseeable future unless you're desperate for a quarterback. Leftwich shouldn't be owned in any Fantasy leagues at this point.
News: Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris named Josh Johnson the team's starter for Week 4 at Washington. He'll replace Byron Leftwich, who failed to help the Bucs to a win through the first three weeks of the season, including a dismal performance in Week 3 vs. the Giants.
Analysis: Johnson completed 4 of 10 passes for 36 yards as he relieved Leftwich in a Week 3 loss to the Giants with a 15-yard rush. He'll be prepared for the matchup at the Redskins, but it's not favorable for him. Thus, keep him on your Fantasy bench for the foreseeable future unless you're desperate for a quarterback. Leftwich shouldn't be owned in any Fantasy leagues at this point.
News: Buccaneers QB Josh Johnson completed 4 of 10 passes for 36 yards as he relieved an ineffective Byron Leftwich in a Week 3 loss to the Giants. Johnson also ran one time for 15 yards.
Analysis: Johnson might not have stolen the starting job in Tampa away from Leftwich just yet, but if the Bucs keep losing Johnson might have a chance to contribute later this season. Don't worry about Johnson in Fantasy play just yet, but keep an eye on the situation in Tampa Bay.
News:B.J. Askew, Brian Clark and Josh Johnson did not record stats Week 2 against the Bills.
Analysis: None of these players ever does enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers for Week 3 against the Giants.
News: In a surprise move, the Bucs named Josh Johnson the backup QB to Byron Leftwich in Week 1 against the Cowboys. That meant rookie QB Josh Freeman was demoted to third on the depth chart. However, Johnson did not get off the bench in a 34-21 loss and was the only offensive player not to stat in the game.
Analysis: It's definitely intriguing that Johnson is currently second on the Bucs depth chart, but that means little in Fantasy as long as Leftwich is healthy. It's safe to ignore Johnson in all Fantasy formats. The Bucs play the Bills in Week 2.
News: NFL Network is among numerous outlets reporting that Byron Leftwich has been named the starting quarterback for the Buccaneers, ending his battle with fellow veteran Luke McCown. Leftwich hasn't exactly had a sharp preseason, completing just 48.8 percent of his passes for 224 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. McCown was better statistically -- he threw two touchdowns and completed 53.6 percent of his passes -- but averaged less than four yards per attempt.
Analysis: Frankly, neither quarterback did very well, and this just might be a case of the Buccaneers going with the trusty veteran over the unproven talent. We may very well see a switch at some point during the season, but with rookie passer Josh Freeman lurking on the bench, it won't be long until he sees the majority of time under center. No Buccaneers quarterback is worth taking with anything more than a late-round pick as a low-end reserve.
News: The Tampa Tribune reports Bucs QB Josh Johnson still believes he can compete for the starting job even though the team has Luke McCown, Byron Leftwich and rookie Josh Freeman seemingly ahead of him on the depth chart. "If you're good enough, which I feel I am, and if you work hard, which I feel I do, it'll all work out in the end. I'm not really stressing it too much," Johnson said Wednesday as the Bucs wrapped a two-day set of offseason workouts. "You can't control what goes on upstairs. You can only control what goes on on the field."
Analysis: Johnson may be in the mix for the competition, but there's not a realistic chance he will start. Johnson will likely be competing for a roster spot during training camp, and he has minimal Fantasy value coming into the year. For now, ignore him in all leagues.
News: The Buccaneers drafted their potential quarterback of the future when they took Josh Freeman of Kansas State with the 17th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. The pick isn't much of a surprise considering that new Bucs head coach Raheem Morris knew Freeman from their days together at K-State. Freeman threw for 2,945 yards in his senior year (down from his junior year) on 58.6 completion percentage for 20 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. He also rushed for an eye-popping 14 touchdowns and 404 yards. His arrival means that Byron Leftwich, Josh McCown, Brian Griese and Josh Johnson will all be forced to battle for all spots along the quarterback depth chart in training camp this summer.
Analysis: Obviously, the Bucs hope Freeman is the long-term answer to their quarterback position, but his drafting throws a fairly big wrench into who will take what role for the club in 2009. Ultimately, whomever is the Tampa Bay starting QB won't be any better than a low-end No. 2 option in Fantasy play since no one listed above has a quality NFL track record. You're better off passing on all Bucs quarterbacks in drafts this season.
News: The Tampa Tribune reports that the Buccaneers and QB Byron Leftwich have agreed to terms on a two-year contract, adding the former Jaguars starter to an already intriguing mix of passers on the roster. Leftwich should battle for the starting job with Luke McCown. This further pushes second-year QB Josh Johnson out of the race for the starting job.
Analysis: Johnson says he'll have a chance to start, but he has No. 3/emergency QB written all over him. Time will tell, but he's likely someone we won't have to worry about in Fantasy play this summer.
News: With the news that the Buccaneers will not re-sign 2008 starter Jeff Garcia, all eyes are on Luke McCown as the potential starter for the club in 2009. McCown was recently signed to a two-year, $7.5 million deal and will at least battle for the starting job. Currently also on the roster are Brian Griese and Josh Johnson, both of whom should also get a look for the top gig.
Analysis: The Buccaneers may also be in the market for a quarterback via free agency. For now, whomever comes out of the Bucs QB competition won't be any better than a No. 2 Fantasy QB, so drafting McCown, Griese or Johnson isn't advised unless with a late-round pick in a very deep draft. We'll keep you posted on the latest here all offseason long.
News: The Buccaneers listed WR Dexter Jackson, QB Josh Johnson, RB Noah Herron, LB Matt McCoy and DL Chris Hovan among their inactives for Week 15 at Atlanta.
Analysis: None of these players ever does enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers.
News: The Buccaneers have announced the inactives for their Week 12 game at Detroit. Not in uniform will be: QB Josh Johnson (third QB), QB Brian Griese (elbow), WR Dexter Jackson (coach's decision), SS Jermaine Phillips (forearm), RB Noah Herron (coach's decision), TE Alex Smith (ankle) and DT Greg Peterson (coach's decision).
Analysis: Smith and Phillips have some minimal Fantasy value when healthy, but Smith has now missed two straight weeks while Phillips is out for a third straight week. Smith will be replaced by Jerramy Stevens again. None of these other guys have any Fantasy value.
News: The Buccaneers have announced the inactives for their Week 11 game vs. Minnesota. Not in uniform will be: QB Josh Johnson (coach's decision), QB Brian Griese (elbow), WR Dexter Jackson (coach's decision), SS Jermaine Phillips (forearm), RB Cadillac Williams (coach's decision), TE Alex Smith (ankle) and DT Greg Peterson (coach's decision).
Analysis: Griese, Jackson, Williams and Smith have some value in deeper leagues, but none were really expected to play today. The rest have no Fantasy value.
News: Buccaneers listed QB Brian Griese, WR Dexter Jackson, RB B.J. Askew, WR Maurice Stovall and QB Josh Johnson among their inactives for Week 9 at Kansas City.
Analysis: Griese used to start for the Buccaneers, but he has an elbow injury and won't unseat Jeff Garcia even when he returns. None of these other players does enough statistically to matter in Fantasy.
News: Tampa Bay lists the following players as being inactive for Week 7 against Seattle: QB Brian Griese, QB Josh Johnson (3rd QB), RB B.J. Askew, WR Maurice Stovall and DL Greg Peterson.
Analysis: The Bucs are sticking with QB Jeff Garcia for the time being and Griese has little Fantasy value at this time. The same goes with the rest of the aforementioned players.
News: The Buccaneers listed the following players as inactive for Week 6 vs. Carolina: QB Josh Johnson (third QB), QB Brian Griese, RB B.J. Askew, WR Joey Galloway, LB Matt McCoy and DL Greg Peterson.
Analysis: Aside from Griese and Galloway, none of the players on this list should be considered viable Fantasy option. They are not in a position to contribute regular stats as they aren't in line for regular playing time. They've got some depth chart climbing to do and should be left on the waiver wire.
News: Bucs QB Josh Johnson, DB Sabby Piscitelli, RB B.J. Askew, WR Joey Galloway, DL Greg Peterson and QB Luke McCown have all been ruled inactive for Week 5 at Denver.
Analysis: Galloway continues to miss time with a foot injury and the Bucs still have no firm timetable for his return. He is about the only player worth owning in Fantasy when active. Keep them all reserved Week 5.
News: The Buccaneers have listed the Week 4 inactives for their Week 4 game vs. Green Bay. Not in uniform will be: QB Josh Johnson (third QB), FB B.J. Askew (hamstring), LB Matt McCoy (coach's decision), WR Joey Galloway (foot) and DT Ryan Sims (groin).
Analysis: Galloway was listed as out earlier in the week, so his name was expected to be on this list. None of these other players have any Fantasy value.
News: The Buccaneers listed the following players as inactive for Week 2 against Atlanta: QB Jeff Garcia (ankle), QB Josh Johnson (third QB), RB Michael Bennett (coach's decision), LB Matt McCoy (groin), WR Maurice Stovall (back) and DL Greg Peterson.
Analysis: Aside from Jeff Garcia, none of the players on this list are going to be in line for considerable playing time anytime soon. Leave them on the waiver wire in all Fantasy leagues until further notice. They've got some depth chart climbing to do.
News: The Buccaneers announced their inactives for Week 1, and the following players won't take part in Sunday's game at New Orleans: QB Josh McCown, QB Josh Johnson, RB Michael Bennett, LB Geno Hayes, WR Mark Clayton and DL Greg Peterson.
Analysis: The only players with any Fantasy value here are Clayton and Bennett. Clayton had a shot at the No. 2 WR spot, but couldn't shake off a chest injury in time. He barely has any Fantasy value right now. As for Bennett, he lost out to Warrick Dunn for the third RB spot and Jon Gruden apparently felt they didn't need a third runner against the Saints.
News:The Sports Xchange notes that Josh Johnson, a rookie from San Diego, is getting the fewest reps of any passer in camp for the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Johnson is low on the depth chart behind Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese and Luke McCown. If anything, look for Johnson to make the practice squad, but he has minimal Fantasy value at this time and should not be drafted in 2008.
News: Tampa Bay rookie QB Josh Johnson made his debut Tuesday, reports the St. Petersburg Times. The first-year player from San Diego has not been participating in team drills because coach Jon Gruden wasn't satisfied with his command of the intricate offense. But Tuesday, Johnson got under center for the first time and looked fluid and comfortable. "It's been hard to get him reps," Gruden said. "I think he came out here and completed all five of his throws today and was sharp."
Analysis: Johnson is low on the depth chart behind Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese and Luke McCown. If anything, look for Johnson to make the practice squad, but he has minimal Fantasy value at this time and should not be drafted in 2008.
News: Tampa Bay drafted WR Dexter Jackson in the second round from Appalachian State, but he is expected to contribute more on special teams than offense. The Bucs also drafted DT Dre Moore from Maryland in the fourth round, QB Josh Johnson from San Diego in the fifth round, LB Geno Hayes from Florida State in the sixth round and RB Cory Boyd from South Carolina in the seventh round.
Analysis: Jackson has minimal Fantasy value if he's not going to play on offense. Keep an eye on what develops with his status heading into training camp. Moore is a space eater and has minimal Fantasy value in IDP leagues. Johnson will likely find himself on the practice squad with the Bucs loaded at quarterback. And Hayes and Boyd will make more of an impact on special teams.
