(4/4/2013) The Lions' official team website announced kicker Jason Hanson has retired after 21 seasons. Hanson, who turns 43 in June, nailed 32 of 36 fields goal last year en route to a career-high 134 points. He had said he'd only play for the Lions.

(3/28/2013) The Lions want Jason Hanson back for a 22nd season, but the sides aren't aren't close to an agreement. In what could be a negotiating tactic, the team is bringing in free-agent kicker David Akers for a visit next week. The Detroit Free Press reported the visit after noting the Lions made Hanson a "minimum-salary offer." The 49ers cut Akers after a season in which he hit 29 of 42 field goals. He was set to earn $3 million this season, making it an easy decision. Hanson, who turns 43 in June, nailed 32 of 36 fields goal last year en route to a career-high 134 points. He has said he'll only play for the Lions.

Hanson to decide future in few weeks

(2/16/2013) Lions kicker Jason Hanson told the Oakland Press that he is still on the fence about retirement and will make a decision in the next few weeks. According to the report, Hanson is not leaning one way or the other. He has told reporters in the past that he is only interested in playing for Detroit if he decides to return. "I don't want to fade away," Hanson told MLive.com at the end of the season. "I might, but as long as I feel like I'm ready to try to be the best and come back and be as good as ever, then I'm in."

GM optimistic Hanson will be back

(2/13/2013) Lions general manager Martin Mayhew is optimistic Lions kicker Jason Hanson will return for his 22nd season. The Detroit Free Press reports Hanson has yet to officially make a decision, citing whether or not he has the desire to come back and play. Salary is not expected to be an issue.
