Bucs want Da'Quan Bowers to get in shape

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(6/6/2014) Buccaneers defensive end Da’Quan Bowers showed up to training camp out of shape last year and lost his starting job, according to the Tampa Tribune. Slowed by an unspecified injury this offseason, Bowers returned to workouts recently in far from ideal condition, the paper said.

"He’s not there yet," Bucs defensive line coach Joe Cullen said after a workout this week. "He’s got to get into great shape to be able to do those things (he’s capable of)."

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(4/28/2014) Buccaneers defensive lineman Da'Quan Bowers missed the team's April minicamp with problems stemming from the knee injury suffered during the 2013 season.

"He's learning the system, and eventually, he'll get out there," coach Lovie Smith said per the Tampa Bay Times. "I know rehab is going well. He's a good football player, but he needs to prove it right now. He'll get an opportunity. A player like that should be able to excel in a defense like ours."

Contribution from Da'Quan Bowers would be a bonus

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/6/2014) The Buccaneers' new coaching staff says it has high hopes for defensive end Da'Quan Bowers, but "it will be a bonus" if the team gets any meaningful contribution from him moving forward, reports ESPN.com. Joe Cullen believes in Da'Quan Bowers

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(1/30/2014) Buccaneers defensive line coach Joe Cullen believes he can help lineman Da'Quan Bowers, according to the Tampa Tribune.

"Some guys blossom early and some blossom late, and I studied Da’Quan really hard when he was coming out of college and so I’m really excited to work with him and see what we can do there,’’ Cullen said. Bowers has struggled since a knee injury during his senior season. Bowers looked like he was ready for a big year in 2013, but showed up to camp out of shape. Cullen believes Bowers has the skills to succeed. "I think he has the qualities to be a dominant defensive lineman. He’s big, he’s powerful, he’s strong, and those are all great qualities."

I think we've worked very hard to become one of the focal points of this team and be the leaders on this team. Everything starts up front. If they can’t push the D-line, they can’t gain yards, basically. We've taken pride in run stop as well as pass rush.
