Texans defense largely healthy Thursday

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12/5/2013) The Texans' injury report for Week 14 featured a lengthy list of injured defenders, but all but one player from that side of the ball was able to take the field Thursday against the Jaguars. While defensive back Jawanza Starling (foot) was inactive prior to kickoff, 11 other injured players were able to play through their issues.

Defensive lineman Antonio Smith (not injury related), linebackers Joe Mays (knee), Mike Mohamed (hamstring), Darryl Sharpton (knee), Whitney Mercilus (hip) and Jeff Tarpinian (groin), and defensive backs Brice McCain (hamstring), Johnathan Joseph (groin), Kareem Jackson (ribs), D.J. Swearinger (foot) and Shiloh Keo (neck) are all in uniform Thursday.

(12/4/2013) Eleven Texans defenders have been placed on the injury report for the game Thursday against the Jaguars, but all are probable.

Among those in the secondary are Kareem Jackson (ribs), Johnathan Joseph (groin), Shiloh Keo (neck), Jawanza Starling (hamstring) and D.J. Swearinger (foot).

The listed linebackers are Joe Mays (knee), Whitney Mercilus (hip), Mike Mohamed (hamstring), Darryl Sharpton (knee) and Jeff Tarpinian (groin). The lone lineman is Antonio Smith (not injury related).

Whitney Mercilus keeps up the heat

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(10/7/2013) Texans linebacker Whitney Mercilus sacked Colin Kaepernick for a 6-yard loss in the loss at San Francisco, giving him 4 1/2 sacks this season. That's tied for eighth in the NFL.

Mercilus has 3 1/2 sacks in the past two weeks.

Texans get several players back

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(9/9/2013) Several Texans will suit up Monday night after being listed as probable on the injury report. They include corners A.J. Bouye (knee) and Brice McCain (knee), tight end Garrett Graham (hip), linebacker Whitney Mercilus (hamstring), safety Eddie Pleasant (knee), wideout DeVier Posey (Achilles), guard Wade Smith (knee) and linebacker Brooks Reed (back).

Whitney Mercilus ready to play opener

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(9/7/2013) It's all but official: Texans outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus will play Monday night. He has overcome a hamstring injury to practice every day this week, including Saturday, and is listed as probable for the game.

Mercilus looks to take the momentum gained in his rookie year of 2012 and run with it. He started just three of 16 games, but registered six sacks to begin justifying his first-round draft status.

Texans draft Mercilus

(4/27/2012) Looking for another pass rusher and more linebacker depth, the Texans selected Illinois defensive end Whitney Mercilus with the 26th overall pick in the NFL draft Thursday night. The 6-foot-3, 261-pound Mercilus is an early-entry junior who only started for one season in college, but he led the nation in sacks (16) and forced fumbles (8). He earned All-Big Ten honors and won the 2011 Ted Hendricks award. "He's a smart player, he's athletic, he's tough," Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said. "You want those high-motor guys, but you want them to have that kind of ability." Phillips said if Mercilus would've stayed in school, he would've been a Top-10 pick in next year's draft. Mercilus says he's ready to contribute immediately, despite his relatively light experience. "I answer that criticism as I just became more of a student of the game," Mercilus said. "Definitely, when I got my opportunity, I made the most of it. Instead of being behind a starter, who was ahead of me in my last years, 2009 and 2010, once I got my opportunity, I was able to make the most of it and just shine through."
