Stagnant offense leaves Caleb Sturgis hidden

(12/29/2013) Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis didn't get many opportunities to contribute in Week 17, in a 20-7 loss to the Jets. Sturgis didn't attempt a  field goal in the game, and connected on his lone extra point attempt.

Sturgis started his rookie season well, but finished with a 76.5 percent mark on his field-goal tries. He went 26 of 35, but did not even attempt one over the final two games.

(12/22/2013) Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis received no work in Week 16 against the Bills, as the Dolphins fell 19-0. Sturgis did not even attempt a field-goal in the shutout loss.

Sturgis heads into the final game of his rookie season in Week 17 against the Jets with 26 field goals on 34 attempts.

(12/15/2013) Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis nailed his lone attempt in Week 15, from 32 yards out. He added three successful points after touchdown, to finish with six points in a 24-20 win over the Patriots.

Sturgis got off to a strong start to his rookie season, but is now just 26 for 34 on field-goal attempts entering Week 16 against the Bills.

(12/8/2013) Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis missed a field-goal attempt for the third straight game Sunday, in a 34-28 win over the Steelers in Week 14. Sturgis connected on attempts from 30 and 27 yards and added four extra points, but missed a 52-yard attempted near halftime.

Sturgis is now 25 for 33 on field-goal attempts during his rookie season. The Dolphins face the Patriots in Week 15.

(12/1/2013) Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis opened Sunday's game against the Jets in Week 13 with a missed field goal, but made up for it later in a 23-3 win.

Sturgis ended the team's first drive of the game by missing from 41 yards out. Fortunately, he got plenty of other chances, as the Dolphins' offense stalled numerous times in the red zone. He connected from 34, 43 and 18 yards and added two extra points to finish the game with 11 points, his second game in a row with more than 10.

Sturgis heads to Week 14 against the Steelers having connected on 23 of 30 field-goal attempts in his rookie season. 


Caleb Sturgis makes three in tough loss

(11/24/2013) Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis had a solid game, but he did miss for the first time in three games in a 20-16 loss to the Panthers. Sturgis connected on field goals of 32, 47 and 23 yards in the second quarter, but did miss a 53-yard try in the fourth quarter.

Sturgis added one extra point, giving him 10 points, his best total since Week 5. He is now 20 of 26 on field goals this season, heading into Week 13 against the Jets.

(11/18/2013) Dolphins placekicker Caleb Sturgis didn't have to do anything but kick off and boot extra points in the middle quarters Sunday against San Diego. But he contributed to the win with a 22-yard field goal to open the scoring and 37-yarder to close it. The second one gave his team a four-point cushion midway through the fourth quarter.

(11/11/2013) Several Dolphins who were listed on the injury report are active for Monday's game at Tampa Bay. They include cornerback Nolan Carroll (concussion), safety Chris Clemons (hamstring), linebacker Dannell Ellerbe (calf), guard Nate Garner (knee), linebacker Jelani Jenkins (foot), tight end Dion Sims (toe) and kicker Caleb Sturgis (groin).

All were listed as probable except for Jenkins, who was questionable.

(11/7/2013) Dolphins placekicker Caleb Sturgis landed on the injury report Thursday with a groin injury. He practiced only on a limited basis. There has been no indication, however, that he won't play Monday night at Tampa Bay.

Sturgis has nailed 20 of 25 field goal attempts this season, but has cooled off considerably after a hot start. He has missed four of his last seven.

(11/1/2013) Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis got off to another poor start in Week 9 against the Bengals, but made his kicks when it counted in a 22-20 overtime win.

Sturgis missed a 34-yard attempted in the first quarter, before connecting from 36 yards in the second. He then came up big in the fourth quarter, connecting on a 44-yarder to send the game to overtime. He also made two extra-point attempts.

Sturgis is now 13 for 18 on field-goal attempts through his first eight games, with all five of his misses coming over the last four games.

(10/27/2013) Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis has hit a rough patch, as he missed two field-goal attempts Sunday, in a 27-17 Week 8 loss. Sturgis connected from 52 yards, but missed one attempt and had another blocked.

Sturgis added two successful extra-point attempts. Stafford is now 11 of 15 on field-goal tries this season, but has missed four of his last eight attempts.

(10/20/2013) Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis missed a field goal for the second week in a row in Week 7 against the Bills. And, for the second straight week, it proved costly, in a 23-21 loss.

Sturgis attempted just one field goal, from 51 yards out, which he missed. He did add three extra-points in the game.

Sturgis is 10 for 12 to open his career on field-goal attempts.

(10/6/2013) Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis missed his first kick of his career in Week 5 against the Ravens, and it came at a bad time in a 26-23 loss.

Sturgis, who opened his career making 10 straight field-goal attempts, missed a game-tying attempt at the end of the fourth quarter from 57 yards. He had the distance on the kick, but missed wide left.

Sturgis was solid otherwise, connecting from 37, 25 and 48 yards out and adding two extra-point attempts to finish with 11 points.

Sturgis is 10 for 11 on the season on field goals and 12 for 12 on extra points. He heads into the bye week averaging more than eight points per game.

(9/22/2013) Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis enjoyed a productive performance during Sunday's home opener against the Falcons.

Sturgis drilled a 46-yard field goal attempt as the first half expired and then a 50-yard shot in the third quarter. He joined Uwe von Schamann as the only rookie kickers in franchise history to have two field goals of 50 or more yards in a season.

Sturgis finished 2 of 2 in field goal attempts and converted three extra points in a 27-23 victory.

Sturgis easily connected from 54 yards out, while nailing all three of his extra-point attempts in a 24-20 win.

Sturgis is 4 for 4 on field-goal attempts during his first two NFL games.

(9/8/2013) New Dolphins placekicker Caleb Sturgis nailed his debut by nailing every boot in aiding a 23-10 victory in Cleveland.

Sturgis opened the scoring with a 45-yard field goal in the first quarter and gave his team a 6-0 lead with a 49-yarder in the second. He completed the trifecta with a 36-yarder with four minutes remaining in the game and added two extra points for a perfect afternoon.

He will accompany the Dolphins to Indianapolis next Sunday.

(8/14/2013) The Dolphins cut kicker Dan Carpenter, apparently handing the job to rookie Caleb Sturgis. Sturgis is a fifth-round pick out of Florida. 

Carpenter hit 22 of 27 fields goals in 14 games last year, his fifth season with Miami.

(7/29/2013) Dolphins kicker Dan Carpenter appears to be taking the lead in the competition for the starting job with rookie Caleb Sturgis, reports the Miami Herald.

With Sturgis' injured groin still mending, Carpenter has pounced in the kicking competition.

"I'm not changing anything I'm doing," Carpenter said. "I'm working just as hard as I was the last two years when no one was here. Nothing's changed. I'm just going to work and trying to make every kick."

(7/24/2013) Dolphins rookie Caleb Sturgis missed two more field goals Wednesday and has fallen behind veteran Dan Carpenter, reports ESPN.com. A fifth-round pick out of Florida, Sturgis must improve dramatically to unseat Carpenter, who hit 22 of 27 field goals last year.

Sturgis’ big advantage is that he’s much cheaper than Carpenter; Miami would save more than $2 million by replacing Carpenter with Sturgis.

(6/21/2013) The Dolphins are having a fierce battle for their kicking job this offseason between veteran Dan Carpenter and rookie Caleb Sturgis, a former University of Florida standout.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports that coach Joe Philbin said the coaches are tracking every kick and kickoff and the most consistent player will get the job. The report says so far Sturgis has a leg up on Carpenter.

Sturgis will compete with Dan Carpenter for the kicking job in Miami, and Sturgis might be the favorite based on Carpenter’s struggles in recent years. Keep an eye on what develops of this battle in training camp, and if Sturgis is kicking for the Dolphins he would be considered a No. 2 Fantasy option in all leagues.
