News: For their Week 17 loss to the Titans, the Texans went once again with T.J. Yates under center, but the rookie injured his left shoulder on the first drive, so Jake Delhomme took over for the remainder of the game. In his first game of the season, Delhomme completed 18 of 28 passes for 211 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown throw to WR Bryant Johnson in the closing seconds of the game. Delhomme did not throw an interception, but he did lose a fumble in the second quarter.
Analysis: Depending on the status of Yates, Delhomme could wind up starting his first game of this season in the playoffs. He was decent in Week 17, but should Delhomme be the Texans' starter in the postseason, he would be a risky play in postseason Fantasy formats.
News: Texans coach Gary Kubiak named QB Jake Delhomme as the backup to rookie QB T.J. Yates for Sunday's game against the Falcons. Delhomme was signed on Tuesday to replace QB Matt Leinart, who sustained a season-ending fractured shoulder in last week's win at the Jaguars. "He's played a lot of football. He can handle himself, and I can trust what he can do right now," Kubiak said of Delhomme. "It's just a comfort zone from a leadership aspect... we knew what we were getting. We did our homework."
Analysis: The Texans have said they have full faith in the rookie Yates, but if he struggles, then the team is confident Delhomme is a good safety net. However, you can leave Delhomme on Fantasy waivers until further notice.
News: Houston signed veteran QB Jake Delhomme on Tuesday to fill the team's backup spot after Matt Leinart suffered a season-ending collarbone injury last Sunday. Delhomme, who beat out fellow QB Jeff Garcia during a tryout, is expected to serve behind starting QB T.J. Yates for the Texans.
Analysis: Delhomme has not played a game this season after being released by Cleveland in the offseason. He managed only five games with the Browns last season and recorded seven interceptions and just two touchdown passes. He has thrown for more interceptions than touchdowns in his past two seasons. Fantasy owners should not consider him a worthwhile QB option in any format as long as he's the backup.
News: The Browns officially announced that QB Jake Delhomme has been released. Delhomme spent the 2010 season in Cleveland as a part-time starter and backup behind rookie Colt McCoy.
Analysis: Delhomme will likely look to land with a new team as a backup QB and serve as a mentor. One possible destination would be Denver if Kyle Orton is traded since Delhomme could reunite with former coach John Fox. Keep an eye on what happens with Delhomme, but he has minimal Fantasy value. Ignore him in all leagues on Draft Day.
News: The Akron Beacon Journal reports that the Browns are expected to release QB Jake Delhomme, who spent the 2010 season in Cleveland as a part-time starter and backup behind rookie Colt McCoy.
Analysis: Delhomme will likely look to land with a new team as a backup QB and serve as a mentor. Ignore him in all leagues on Draft Day.
News: The Denver Post speculates that Jake Delhomme would be a good backup quarterback behind Tim Tebow if the Broncos trade Kyle Orton when the offseason starts. Delhomme worked with John Fox for years in Carolina and has a good understanding of the offense getting installed in Denver.
Analysis: We expect Delhomme to either take a huge pay cut to stay with the Browns or become a free agent. If he's set free, the best he'll be is a mentor-type for a young quarterback. He's no longer relevant for Fantasy use.
News: The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that new Browns coach Pat Shurmur said Friday he likes Jake Delhomme in the mentoring role and would like to have him back as the No. 2 QB behind Colt McCoy.
Analysis: Delhomme could remain with the Browns as an insurance policy for McCoy, or he could be released in a salary-cap move since he's due a base salary of $5.4 million in 2011. Either way his days as a viable Fantasy option are over. Ignore Delhomme in all leagues on Draft Day in 2011.
News: The Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports that the Browns are likely to release QB Jake Delhomme. He is 36, and the report says he is due a base salary of $5.4 million in the last of his two-year deal. The Browns have little need for Delhomme with Colt McCoy expected to start in 2011.
Analysis: Delhomme could remain with the Browns as an insurance policy for McCoy, or he could be released as the report says and look to sign with another team as a backup. Either way his days as a viable Fantasy option are over. Ignore Delhomme in all leagues on Draft Day in 2011.
News: The Akron Beacon Journal reports that Browns QB Jake Delhomme, who turns 36 on Monday, still wants to play in 2011 and hopes it's with Cleveland. His base salary for next season is $5.4 million. ''I play because I enjoy it. I like to compete, it's fun,'' Delhomme said. ''If you'd asked me a year ago today if I would have been in Cleveland, I would have laughed at you. So we don't know what's going to happen. 'I enjoyed myself, I enjoyed the team, I enjoyed being a part of it, I enjoyed the passion of these people here. You want to be part of helping turn something around. I certainly would like to be a part of that.'' Delhomme, hurt in the opener and again against the Falcons, said his immediate goal was to ''kind of get healthy" with his ankle problems.
Analysis: Delhomme could return as the No. 2 QB in Cleveland behind Colt McCoy, but he has minimal Fantasy value. Ignore Delhomme in all leagues in 2011.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme has been listed as the No. 3 QB for Week 15 against the Bengals. Coach Eric Mangini named Colt McCoy the starter on Thursday after watching him take snaps with the first-team offense.
Analysis: Delhomme made his third straight start last week against the Bills after coming back from a severe ankle injury. However, he passed for just 86 yards and now has been related as the No. 3 QB. With the Browns already eliminated from the playoffs the Browns seem to be looking to the future. Delhomme can be left on the bench heading into Week 15.
News: Browns rookie quarterback Colt McCoy took snaps with Cleveland's starting offense in practice and could start Sunday in Cincinnati. Coach Eric Mangini wanted to see how McCoy looked Wednesday before naming him or Jake Delhomme as his starter against the Bengals. Mangini said he will announce his choice on Thursday. McCoy hasn't played in three weeks since sustaining a high ankle sprain on Nov. 21 in Jacksonville. McCoy is 2-3 as a starter and was Cleveland's No. 3 quarterback last week in Buffalo. Delhomme made his third straight start after coming back from a severe ankle injury and passed for just 86 yards in Sunday's loss to the Bills.
Analysis: We suspect the Browns will give McCoy the starting job if he's healthy because the franchise is not playoff-bound and wants to see if he can handle the gig into 2011. No one should consider McCoy nor Delhomme reliable Fantasy options for Week 15.
News: The Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports Browns rookie QB Colt McCoy is optimistic he'll be ready to play Sunday against the Bengals in Week 15. The paper reports that if he is ready to play, there's a good chance coach Eric Mangini will give him the nod. McCoy, who's missed the past three games with a high ankle sprain suffered Nov. 21 in Jacksonville, said that he felt he'd be ready to go in Cincinnati. If that's the case, Mangini will make a decision between McCoy and Jake Delhomme, and he may have tipped his hand when asked what he'd do it McCoy isn't ready. "If Colt couldn't play, then I'd go with Delhomme," said Mangini, who effectively ruled out Seneca Wallace as a starting option. And if McCoy is healthy? "I'm going to see where we're at on Wednesday and kind of go from there," said Mangini. "He was able to get to where he could function as the third [in Buffalo], so we've got to see where that is and think about it and we'll go from there."
Analysis: Even if Delhomme starts again in Week 15 against the Bengals he would have minimal Fantasy value. Keep an eye on what happens with McCoy and Delhomme, but don't use Delhomme in the majority of leagues this week.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme made two costly fourth-quarter turnovers that sealed Cleveland's fate in a 13-6 loss to the Bills in Week 14. Leodis McKelvin intercepted Delhomme's pass with under 4 minutes left at the Bills 32, and Buffalo was able to run out the clock. Delhomme also lost a fumble on the previous possession, which led to Rian Lindell's second field goal. The Browns' offense was so inept, it didn't cross midfield in five second-half possessions. "We didn't play good football," Delhomme said. "We had a very good week of practice. We can't blame it on that or anything else. It's very disappointing. You have to take your medicine." Delhomme finished 12 of 20 for 86 yards and no touchdowns. He had a 49.2 passer rating.
Analysis: The Browns (5-8) were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention with the loss and they can thank Delhomme for that. It looked as though he might have turned a corner in Week 13 when he led Cleveland to a win over Miami, but he showed Week 14 why the Browns are likely to turn back to rookie QB Colt McCoy once McCoy recovers from an ankle injury. Even if Delhomme starts in Week 15 against the Bengals, he is not worth using in Fantasy.
News: With QB Colt McCoy (ankle) not practicing Wednesday, QB Jake Delhomme will almost certainly make his third-consecutive start Sunday in Buffalo.
Analysis: Delhomme doesn't have many weapons at his disposal in Cleveland, but guys like TE Benjamin Watson and Mohamed Massaquoi are serviceable options and Delhomme's best work comes when handing off to Peyton Hillis. Do not use Delhomme in Week 14 against the Bills, even though he does have an enticing matchup.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme completed 24 for 34 passes for 217 yards and a touchdown in a Week 13 win at Miami.
Analysis: Delhomme found Benjamin Watson for the only Browns touchdown on Sunday, and that was really all he had to do, as a late Miami interception led to the game-winning field goal. Delhomme continues to underwhelm since coming back from his ankle injury, but at least he didn't throw an interception in this game like he did last week. If Delhomme is still the starter in Week 14 against the Bills, he will be worth using in a few more very deep formats because of the great matchup, but only in a desperate situation.
News: Browns coach Eric Mangini confirmed Friday that QB Jake Delhomme will start in Week 13 at Miami. The Dolphins are allowing opposing Fantasy QBs to average 15.4 points a game against them this season and haven't allowed a 300-yard passer since Week 7.
Analysis: Delhomme didn't play particularly well in Week 12, and the Dolphins defense can be pretty tough at times, as they've allowed QBs to complete just 58.3 percent of passes against them, the eighth-best number in the league. If at all possible, Fantasy owners should avoid using Delhomme at all in Week 13.
News: Browns coach Eric Mangini said Wednesday that QB Colt McCoy (ankle) is getting closer to returning, but Jake Delhomme will most likely start vs. Miami in Week 13.
Analysis: Delhomme didn't exactly impress last weekend against the Panthers, and might will be benched once McCoy is healthy again. Continue to ignore Delhomme in all Fantasy formats at this critical point in the season.
News: The Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports that Browns coach Eric Mangini isn't ready to say that Jake Delhomme will start Sunday's game in Week 13 at Miami. Mangini said Monday he'll see where Colt McCoy (ankle) is this week and then discuss what he wants to do at the position. He also said that backup QB Seneca Wallace is still in the discussion. During Sunday's 24-23 victory over the Panthers, Delhomme completed 24 of 35 attempts for 245 yards but threw two interceptions early in the third quarter, including one that was returned for a touchdown.
Analysis: Even if Delhomme starts against the Dolphins in Week 13 he would have minimal Fantasy value. Ignore Delhomme in all leagues at Miami.
News: Despite throwing interceptions on consecutive pass attempts, QB Jake Delhomme did enough right to help the Browns to a 24-23 win over his former team, the Panthers. Early in the third quarter, Delhomme threw a pick to LB Jon Beason, which led to a failed field goal attempt by Carolina K John Kasay. On the next drive, Delhomme's first pass attempt was plucked by DB Captain Munnerlyn and taken to the end zone, bringing the Panthers to within a point of the lead. Delhomme did not throw for a touchdown in the game, but he completed 24 of 35 passes for 245 yards.
Analysis: This was just Delhomme's third game and second start of the season, as he had been sidelined with a high ankle sprain. There were some bright spots for him during Week 12, but after a rash of interceptions last season, Fantasy owners should be loathe to trust him. He could also be replaced by Seneca Wallace or Colt McCoy at some point, so there is no need to roster Delhomme in Fantasy.
News: Browns coach Eric Mangini confirmed Friday that Jake Delhomme will start at QB against Carolina in Week 12. It will mark Delhomme's first start since he suffered a high ankle sprain in the season opener. He is replacing rookie QB Colt McCoy, who is dealing with a high ankle sprain of his own. Delhomme spent the past seven years of his career with the Panthers before going to Cleveland. "I had my chance there and we had a good run," Delhomme said. "That's kind of how I feel and I just want to go out and play for this team. That's the thing I am most disappointed in because of all the stuff we did in the offseason and preseason, I haven't been able to do that."
Analysis: Delhomme is starting against his former team, which could provide motivation, but he has minimal Fantasy value. Don't plan on using Delhomme in the majority of leagues in Week 12.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme has spent most of his first season with Cleveland dispensing sound advice to rookie QB Colt McCoy. This week, he lent him his walking boot. With McCoy out with a high left ankle sprain, Delhomme, who has been inactive for eight games because of a similar injury, will start in Week 12 against his former team, the Panthers. Delhomme spent seven seasons in Carolina, leading the Panthers to their only Super Bowl appearance."They know my weaknesses and I know a lot of their strengths," Delhomme said about the Panthers, who cut him in March after an 18-interception 2009. "But it's a different year, (and) I'm around a different offense." Delhomme hasn't started since the season opener Sept. 12, when he suffered a high ankle sprain in the first half against Tampa Bay. He returned to action Oct. 10, filling in against Atlanta when Seneca Wallace injured his ankle.
Analysis: Delhomme was terrible in 2009, and in the two games that he has played this year, he has picked up where he left off. He also has an unfavorable matchup against Carolina's seventh-ranked pass defense. Use Delhomme only in the deepest of Fantasy leagues.
News: According to a report on ESPN, Jake Delhomme will start at QB for the Browns in Week 12 against Carolina with Colt McCoy dealing with a high ankle sprain. Delhomme, who has been out since Week 5 with an ankle injury, spent the past seven years with the Panthers before going to Cleveland.
Analysis: It's not official yet that McCoy will be ruled out or even lose his starting spot, but he was injured in last week's game at Jacksonville and not able to practice Wednesday. If Delhomme does start against the Panthers he would have minimal Fantasy value. Don't plan on using Delhomme in the majority of leagues.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme (ankle) was listed as inactive for Week 10 against the Jets. He was not listed as the team's third, emergency quarterback. Colt McCoy was once again listed as the team's starter.
Analysis: Delhomme will continue to serve as a mentor for McCoy, but he's clearly not in a situation to contribute in Fantasy. That is unlikely to change any time soon. Ignore Delhomme in all leagues.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme (ankle) was limited in practice for a second straight day Friday and is listed as questionable for Week 10. He is unlikely to play, as Colt McCoy is expected to start once again.
Analysis: Delhomme isn't likely to play in Week 10, even though coach Eric Mangini has not announced a starting QB. Delhomme might not even start once he's healthy again, so continue to stash him in only the deepest of Fantasy formats.
News:Jake Delhomme's comeback season has been a disaster. But although he's been injured and lost his job to rookie Colt McCoy, the veteran quarterback says he will abide by whatever decision coach Eric Mangini makes about his starter. Delhomme returned to practice Thursday for the first time since re-injuring his ankle on Oct. 10. He's not ready to play yet, but when he's 100 percent, Mangini will have to pick between Delhomme, McCoy and Seneca Wallace to be Cleveland's No. 1 quarterback. As much as he would like to play, Delhomme promises "it's not going to be a problem anyway we go with me." While sidelined, Delhomme has mentored McCoy, who credits his 35-year-old teammate with helping him adjust to playing in the NFL.
Analysis: Delhomme will continue to serve as a mentor for McCoy, but he's not expected to play in Week 10 against the Jets. Ignore Delhomme in all leagues.
News: As expected, Browns QB Jake Delhomme (ankle) sat out practice Wednesday. Coach Eric Mangini said Monday that his former starting QB could return to the practice field on Thursday.
Analysis: Delhomme was the starter in the season opener but went down with the ankle injury. If Delhomme is able to play Sunday, he will be a viable option in deeper Fantasy formats, but it's not looking likely.
News: Browns coach Eric Mangini said Monday that QB Jake Delhomme (ankle) could be back practicing as early as Thursday while fellow QB Seneca Wallace (ankle) will probably return on Wednesday. Delhomme has only played in two games this season.
Analysis: Delhomme was the starter in the season opener but Wallace had to come in once he went down with the ankle injury. While Wallace appears to be ahead of Delhomme in the rehab process, Colt McCoy has done a decent job filling in for the two so Fantasy owners should keep an eye on the quarterback situation in Cleveland to see who will be the starter in Week 10 against the Jets. If Delhomme is able to play Sunday, he will be a viable option in deeper Fantasy formats.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme (ankle) was listed among the inactives for Week 9 vs. New England.
Analysis: Delhomme's ankle is coming along very slowly, and Seneca Wallace might be back before he is. Continue to stash Delhomme away in deeper Fantasy formats if you must.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme (ankle) didn't practice again Friday and is listed as doubtful for Week 9 against the Patriots.
Analysis: Delhomme's ankle is coming along very slowly, and the chances of him playing on Sunday against the Patriots appear to be slim. Continue to stash the veteran away in deeper Fantasy formats if you must.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme (ankle) remained absent from practice Wednesday as Cleveland began preparations for its Week 9 game vs. New England.
Analysis: Delhomme's ankle is coming along very slowly, and the chances of him playing on Sunday against the Patriots appear to be slim. Continue to stash the veteran away in deeper Fantasy formats if you must.
News: The Browns could be headed for a QB controversy in Week 9 against New England. Colt McCoy has started the past two games against Pittsburgh and New Orleans, and Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace remain out with ankle injuries Monday. Coach Eric Mangini said Wallace is closer to returning. Wallace could practice as early as Wednesday, and Wallace would like to return as the starter. "It comes down to a coach's decision," Wallace said. "If you're playing well, it shouldn't be a problem to come back and be the guy." Wallace (ankle) could be ready to play Sunday. Coach Eric Mangini reiterated that he will start the QB he believes gives his team the best chance to win Sunday against New England. Though Delhomme (ankle) is getting healthier, the choice will likely be Wallace or McCoy. "We'll play who gives us the best chance to win," Mangini said. "That's something we owe the players, ourselves and the fans. We wont (be) in a developmental-type mode. Mangini said placing Delhomme on IR hasn't been discussed. Hes progressing, Mangini said. There have been no setbacks in the thought process of him not being able to play.
Analysis: Delhomme doesn't appear close to returning as the starter against the Patriots in Week 9. Keep an eye on his status, but don't plan on using Delhomme in the majority of leagues any time soon.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme, who has played in only one game since Week 1 because of a high ankle sprain, is inactive again for Week 7 at New Orleans. With backup Seneca Wallace inactive with a high ankle sprain of his own, third-stringer Colt McCoy will make his second straight start.
Analysis: Delhomme was a disaster in his final season with the Panthers a year ago and doesn't have many weapons in Cleveland. Assuming he gets his starting job back when he's ready to return, he would be no more than a last resort in Fantasy. The Browns have a bye in Week 8, but you can leave him on waivers for Week 9 against the Patriots.
News: Browns QBs Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme are expected to remain out for Week 7 against the Saints with high ankle sprains. Coach Eric Mangini said Wallace is closer to returning, but it appears both will be sidelined Sunday. Colt McCoy will again start. Both Wallace and Delhomme are listed as doubtful.
Analysis: Delhomme has managed to play in just two games this season after he sprained his ankle in Week 1 and then re-injured it in Week 5. The Browns are on a bye in Week 8, so Delhomme gets some extra time to rest. But even if he returns to the starting QB job when healthy, he doesn't have enough upside to be treated as anything more than a potential bye-week Fantasy replacement. Leave him off Fantasy rosters, if you need the space.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme (high ankle sprain) missed practice again Thursday as Cleveland continued preparations for its Week 7 game at New Orleans. Rookie Colt McCoy is expected to start on Sunday against the Saints.
Analysis: Delhomme has managed to play in just two games this season after he sprained his ankle in Week 1 and then re-injured it in Week 5. With the Browns off in Week 8, Delhomme might well sit again this Sunday and take two weeks of rest, but the Browns need wins badly. Continue to follow Delhomme's progress as this week continues, but he wouldn't be anything but an emergency bye-week replacement option if he manages to get healthy enough to play.

News: The Browns listed QB Jake Delhomme (ankle) among their inactives Sunday morning, which means he won't play against the Steelers. Colt McCoy will start in his place.
Analysis: Delhomme looked miserable in Week 5 trying to play on his bum ankle, completing 13 of 23 passes for only 97 yards and two interceptions including one that was returned for the game-winning touchdown for the Falcons. Continue to stash the veteran away in only the very deepest of Fantasy formats for the time being. Cleveland play at New Orleans in Week 7.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme did not practice again Friday as he continues to deal with an ankle injury. He also missed the Wednesday and Thursday sessions with the injury after appearing to re-injure the ankle in Week 5, when he returned to the lineup after suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 1. Backup QB Seneca Wallace (ankle) did also not practice throughout the week. Rookie Colt McCoy is expected to start at QB for Cleveland on Sunday at Pittsburgh. Delhomme is officially listed as doubtful for Week 6.
Analysis: Delhomme looked miserable in Week 5 trying to play on his bum ankle, completing 13 of 23 passes for only 97 yards and two interceptions including one that was returned for the game-winning touchdown for the Falcons. Even if he suits up against the Steelers, no one should consider using him in Fantasy as the matchup is terrible and he's playing awful.

News:Jake Delhomme aggravated his ankle injury Sunday while playing in place of Seneca Wallace vs. the Falcons, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Delhomme, who missed several games with a high-ankle sprain, has now sprained the lower part of the same ankle.
Analysis: Delhomme looked miserable on Sunday, completing 13 of 23 passes for only 97 yards and two interceptions including one that was returned for the game-winning touchdown for the Falcons. Even if he suits up against the Steelers, no one should consider using him in Fantasy as the matchup is terrible and he's playing awful.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme, who was inactive the last three weeks with a high ankle sprain, began Week 5 against the Falcons as the backup to Seneca Wallace but entered just before halftime when Wallace left with an ankle injury of his own. Delhomme finished out the game but looked miserable in the process, completing 13 of 23 passes for only 97 yards and two interceptions, including one by DL Kroy Biermann that was returned 41 yards for the game-clinching touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Coach Eric Mangini said he considered bringing Wallace back in when it became clear that Delhomme was still greatly limited. "We talked about it a little, but Jake was a better option," Mangini said.
Analysis: Delhomme's mobility was limited by the ankle injury, which might have had something to do with his struggles. Then again, he struggled all of last year with the Panthers, and his ankle was fine then. The Browns had planned on giving Delhomme the starting job when he returned to full health, but considering Wallace was having his best game of the season before leaving -- completing 11 of 15 passes for 139 yards and a touchdown -- they might rethink that decision. Of course, if Wallace's injury makes him unavailable for next week's game, the Browns may have no choice but to stick with Delhomme. Keep an eye on this situation heading into Week 6 at Pittsburgh.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme (ankle), who was out of the starting lineup for the fourth straight game but was healthy enough to serve as the backup Week 5 against the Falcons, entered just before halftime when Seneca Wallace suffered an ankle injury of his own.
Analysis: Delhomme was limited in practice all week with the injury, but he had a chance of starting right up until game time. His performance in the second half could go a long way toward determining whether or not he starts Week 6 at Pittsburgh. He's no longer an efficient passer and plays for a bad team, making him nothing more than a last resort in Fantasy even when starting.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme, who has been out since Week 1 with a high ankle sprain, is active for Week 5 against the Falcons, but he will serve as the backup to Seneca Wallace. Delhomme was limited in practice all week with the injury.
Analysis: Delhomme apparently isn't 100 percent, so while the Browns still intend to make him their starting quarterback, he'll have to settle for the backup role this week. He's no longer an efficient passer and plays for a bad team, making him nothing more than a last resort in Fantasy even when starting. He has a good chance of returning to the starting role Week 6 at Pittsburgh.
News: According to FoxSports.com, Browns QB Jake Delhomme, who has been out since the opener with a high ankle sprain, won't start Week 5 against the Falcons, but he will back up Seneca Wallace. Delhomme was able to practice on a limited basis this week.
Analysis: We can't confirm this report until the official inactives list comes out, but if you were planning to start Delhomme, you should get ready to revert to Plan B. Delhomme is nothing more than a last resort in Fantasy coming off a poor season in Carolina and playing for a bad team in Cleveland, so you might be better off with Plan B anyway.
News: Browns coach Eric Mangini said Friday that a decision on the Week 5 status of QB Jake Delhomme will come on Saturday. The veteran has been out since Week 1 with an ankle issue but practiced on a limited basis all week. He's listed as questionable for the matchup vs. the Falcons.
Analysis: Delhomme started Week 1 at Tampa Bay and went 20 for 37 for 227 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Not exactly a solid start, but Mangini has regarded him as the Browns' starter and, if he's healthy, will start against the Falcons. That said, Atlanta has been excellent against opposing quarterbacks this season. They are allowing the seventh-fewest amount of Fantasy points to QBs and have held Pittsburgh, Arizona, New Orleans and San Francisco to just four passing touchdowns with eight interceptions. Only Drew Brees could throw for over 250 yards against them and Delhomme is no Brees. Healthy or not, he's not a recommended Fantasy QB for Week 5.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme says his right ankle has steadily improved and the 35-year-old took snaps with the starting offense during the portion of practice open to reporters on Thursday. Cleveland hosts Atlanta in Week 5.

News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme was back at practice Wednesday, albeit on a limited basis. He hopes to play vs. Atlanta in Week 5 after missing the last three weeks with an ankle sprain. He seemed to move better in practice, but still looked a bit gimpy following his throws. His status for Sunday remains in question, but it's likely he'll play if he receives no setbacks this week. Delhomme would face a Falcons defense he's familiar with from his days with the Panthers. I think there are some positives there, but things have changed too," head coach Eric Mangini said of Delhomme's intel on the Falcons. "Year to year you get some changes but it definitely helps. His familiarity with the personnel with those types of things, he starts at a little bit higher point than a lot of us do we haven't really seen them twice a year."

News: Cleveland QB Jake Delhomme (ankle) will practice Wednesday. Coach Eric Mangini confirmed that if Delhomme is healthy, he will start Sunday of Week 5 against Atlanta. The last time Delhomme faced the Falcons he was a member of the Panthers last season. He went 15 for 24 for 195 yards with two touchdowns and no picks in that game. He threw for over 300 yards in his first game against Atlanta last year.
Analysis: Delhomme started Week 1 at Tampa Bay and went 20 for 37 for 227 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Not exactly a solid start. Still, Mangini has regarded him as the Brown's starter and, if he's healthy, he will start against the Falcons.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme (ankle) was listed as inactive for Week 4 against Cincinnati. Considered a game-time decision, Delhomme was scratched for a third straight game. Seneca Wallace was given the start in his absence.
Analysis: Delhomme was able to practice this week after a severe ankle sprain suffered in Week 1, but the final decision came on Sunday that he was not ready to go. Fantasy owners can expect him to have a much better shot at starting in Week 5 against Atlanta, but he'll have to be monitored again on the injury report. At best, his upside is that of a No. 2 QB or emergency bye-week replacement option when healthy.
News:Jake Delhomme, who missed the past two games with a badly sprained right ankle, practiced for the second straight day on Friday, but it's still not certain if he'll play when the Browns host the Cincinnati Bengals this week. On their final injury report of the week, the Browns listed Delhomme as questionable - 50 percent chance of playing - for Sunday. Coach Eric Mangini will wait to see how Delhomme's ankle responds after a second practice and treatment before deciding upon a starter. Mangini was encouraged by Delhomme's progress and the way he moved during Thursday's workout, but he wouldn't commit to him starting or being the Browns' No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback. "I think any combination is really possible two, three, one," Mangini said before practice. "It's just really how he does today, how it responds tomorrow and then we do have another 24 hours between Saturday and Sunday to see what it's like. You want to give it as much time as you can."
Analysis: Delhomme is nothing more than an emergency low-end No. 2 Fantasy bye-week replacement for Week 4 against the Bengals, who have been pretty stingy against the pass this season (ranked 11th). Follow his status leading into Sunday's contest, but you shouldn't be relying on him or Seneca Wallace, who will start if Delhomme can't.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme (ankle) returned to practice Thursday, but on a limited basis. Coach Eric Mangini said Delhomme will resume his role as the starting QB once he's healthy, but that Delhomme's status for Week 4 against the Bengals is still up in the air. Delhomme said he needed to test his ankle before he would know if he can play. It's possible he could be listed as Cleveland's No. 2 quarterback against the Bengals behind starter Seneca Wallace. "He's our starting quarterback," Mangini said. "So when he's ready to start, he'll start."
Analysis: We'll have to see how Delhomme progresses Friday now that he's actually testing the ankle properly before suggesting him as a potential emergency low-end No. 2 Fantasy bye-week replacement for Week 4 against the Bengals, who have been pretty stingy against the pass this season (ranked 11th). Follow his status leading into Sunday's contest.
News: Hobbled by a nasty ankle injury the past two weeks, Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme practiced - by himself indoors while his teammates went through drills outdoors. He had a brace on his ankle. Delhomme sustained a high ankle sprain in Cleveland's season-opening loss at Tampa Bay and hasn't played since. Browns coach Eric Mangini said Delhomme could "potentially" return to practice Thursday and Friday. "I anticipate Jake coming back," Mangini said. "We'll see where he is. I want Jake to be healthy. That's not a knock on Seneca (Wallace). But Jake does some good things for us offensively."
Analysis: Delhomme has an outside shot of being ready for Week 4 vs. Cincinnati, but you'd have to be desperate to start him or the passer replacing him, Seneca Wallace. Remember, the Bengals rank 11th against the pass and have yielded four passing touchdowns -- three to the Patriots in Week 1 and one to the Ravens in Week 2. Look elsewhere for Fantasy help.
News: Cleveland QB Jake Delhomme (ankle) missed his second straight start on Sunday of Week 3 in Baltimore. Delhomme also sat out the Week 2 game against Kansas City. Seneca Wallace will start for the second straight week.
Analysis: Delhomme went 20 for 37 for 227 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions Week 1 in a loss at Tampa Bay and has not played since. Wallace hasn't been that much better and neither would have been viable Fantasy options for Week 3 against one of the best defenses in the NFL at Baltimore. Keep Delhomme grounded in all leagues.
News: The Browns listed QB Jake Delhomme (high ankle sprain) as doubtful for Week 3 at Baltimore after he didn't practice for a third straight day Friday.
Analysis: Delhomme might not want to return in Week 3 even if he's healthy enough to do so. The Browns, who have struggled throwing the ball against mediocre teams this season, will be facing the team allowing the fewest average Fantasy points per week to quarterbacks. Quarterbacks have gone a combined 26 for 56 against the Ravens this season for just 241 yards and no touchdowns. Continue to stash Delhomme away in just very deep Fantasy formats.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme (ankle) missed practice yet again Thursday as Cleveland prepares for its Week 3 game at Baltimore. The Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports that Delhomme has a high ankle sprain.
Delhomme is hobbled and an uncertainty health-wise heading into the game in Baltimore. That said, even if he was completely healthy, we'd probably recommend going in another direction.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme (ankle) did not practice Wednesday. Coach Eric Mangini said he was optimistic Delhomme will be back for Sunday and that he could return to the practice field later this week.

News: Cleveland QB Jake Delhomme may miss his second straight start Week 3 in Baltimore, reports the Canton Repository on Monday. Delhomme is improving according to coach Eric Mangini but has spent a week in an ankle boot, indicating the quarterback is suffering from a high ankle sprain. If he cannot start, Seneca Wallace will make his second straight start. There should be no quarterback controversy, however. If Delhomme is healthy, he will get the nod.

News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme, who had been listed as doubtful on the injury report for Week 2 due to an ankle injury, was officially listed among the inactives for the game. Seneca Wallace was listed as the starter in his place
Analysis: Delhomme tweaked his ankle in Week 1. He completed 20 of 37 passes for 227 yards against the Buccaneers and threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Mohamed Massaquoi, but was also intercepted twice in the game. He wasn't being relied upon in many Fantasy leagues anyway, so his absence means very little in Fantasy at the moment.
News:Jake Delhomme did not practice for the third straight day on Friday because of an ankle injury, increasing the likelihood that backup Seneca Wallace will start Cleveland's home opener against Kansas City. He was listed as doubtful for the game. Browns coach Eric Mangini did not name Wallace his Week 2 starter, but he seemed headed in that direction. "I just want to go through today and see where we are tomorrow morning," Mangini said before Friday's practice. "That being said, I feel real good about what Seneca's done all week. Not just me, it's the coaches, the players. We all feel good about him leading us as well."
Analysis: Not many Fantasy owners were counting on Delhomme in the first place, so this injury shouldn't impact many people. Keep Delhomme benched or on waivers for Week 2.
News: Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme missed his second straight practice because of an injured right ankle on Thursday. Cleveland coach Eric Mangini said Delhomme has made progress with his ankle, which he hurt while throwing an interception in the closing minutes of the first half in Sunday's season-opening loss at Tampa Bay. Delhomme has been wearing a walking boot to stabilize his ankle. If Delhomme is sidelined for Sunday's home opener against Kansas City, backup Seneca Wallace will make his 15th career start. Wallace, a career No. 2 QB, took all the snaps with Cleveland's first-team offense on Wednesday. He did so again Thursday. "I think Jake's made some progress," Mangini said. "We have a couple different approaches how the game can go and we'll just have to see which way it goes."
Analysis: Delhomme said Wednesday that he has missed an entire week of practice with Carolina because of a thumb injury, but still started. The Browns are being very quiet about Delhomme's injury, but it appears that he will be doubtful for Week 2 vs. the Chiefs at this point. We will get the official word on Friday, but his few Fantasy owners should prepare to probably be without the veteran QB on Sunday. Not that Delhomme is a recommended start most weeks, anyway.
News: As his teammates busily dressed for practice, Jake Delhomme hobbled across the hallway from Cleveland's training room to the locker room. Wearing a protective boot on his injured right ankle, Delhomme felt out of place. "It's embarrassing," the quarterback said. Injured during the first half of his debut with the Browns, Delhomme did not practice on Wednesday and his playing status for Sunday's home opener against Kansas City will depend on how quickly he recovers from the first ankle injury of his 12-year NFL career. Delhomme, who got hurt while throwing a costly interception in Sunday's 17-14 loss at Tampa Bay, underwent an MRI Tuesday. He refused to reveal the results or any specifics other than to say "I have an ankle that's bothering me, and I'll just kind of leave it at that. "I'm a big believer in what's said in the training room stays in the training room," he said. If Delhomme can't play, the Browns will start Seneca Wallace, a career backup who was expected to take all of the practice snaps with Cleveland's first unit.
Analysis: Delhomme knew his injury was worse than he believed on Monday morning, saying it felt "a little different." He plans to get treatment all week and hopes to start Sunday, when the Browns host a Chiefs team coming off Monday night's upset of San Diego. "I'm always optimistic about anything," said Delhomme, who finished 20 of 37 for 227 yards and one TD in Week 1. "We're going to be aggressive in our treatment. I'm going to listen to what the trainers say and we're going to follow that protocol and go from there. We'll see." Browns coach Eric Mangini was typically vague in discussing Delhomme's injury, but he stood by his decision to keep his starter in for the second half. It's possible the ultra-secretive Mangini will make the Chiefs wait until game time before announcing his starting QB. That means Fantasy owners relying on Delhomme will have to possibly wait up until inactives. Either way, he is probably not a recommended Fantasy start for Week 2.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme (ankle) did not practice Wednesday and is considered day to day. Eric Mangini said he will decide between Delhomme and Seneca Wallace as the starter late this week. He added that Delhomme's ankle is sore, but getting better. He also refused to disclose what an MRI revealed, saying "what's said in the training room, stays in the training room."
Analysis: Delhomme has had some arm injuries during his career, but this looks like the first real lower-body injury he's suffered. The Browns might just be taking things easy with Delhomme, but if he isn't back at practice by Friday, the chances of him playing in Week 2 will be slim. Luckily Delhomme is just a low-end backup Fantasy QB when healthy, so don't worry too much about his status the rest of this week. Seneca Wallace would start in his place if the ankle isn't ready to go.
News: The Cleveland Browns are keeping Jake Delhomme's injured right ankle under wraps. The team did not provide a medical update Tuesday on Delhomme, who injured his right ankle while throwing a game-swinging interception late in the first half of Sunday's season-opening loss at Tampa Bay -- his debut with the Browns. Delhomme, who is wearing a walking boot, played the entire second half on an ankle coach Eric Mangini said his quarterback "twisted up." Delhomme was scheduled to undergo an MRI. A team spokesman said the Browns "will not have anything on Jake" and did not confirm if Delhomme had the exam. The Browns host Kansas City on Sunday in their home opener. If Delhomme can't play, backup Seneca Wallace could start against the Chiefs. Mangini is expected to provide an update on Delhomme before practice Wednesday.
Analysis: Delhomme tweaked his ankle on Sunday and appeared to be a little limited in the second half of Cleveland's loss to the Buccaneers. Hopefully this boot is just a precaution to make sure he doesn't injure himself further heading into Wednesday's first practice of the week, but this situation will surely become clearer as the week progresses. If Delhomme can't play in Week 2, Wallace would start ahead of him. Neither will be a suggested play against a Chiefs team that did well against the Chargers in Week 1.
News: On Monday, following his official debut with the Cleveland Browns, it was announced that QB Jake Delhomme injured his right ankle while throwing a pick late in the first half of Sunday's 17-14 loss at Tampa Bay. Coach Eric Mangini said Delhomme will undergo tests on the ankle, which appeared to bother the 35-year-old quarterback during the second half. Browns president Mike Holmgren said Delhomme was "sore" Monday and that doctors intend to work on him in preparation for Sunday's home opener against Kansas City. "His ankle got a little twisted up, but he felt good enough to continue on it, and I felt good enough with him continuing on at that point," Mangini said, offering no other specifics about Delhomme's injury or when he'll have the tests.
Analysis: Expect Delhomme to show up on the injury report for his team's upcoming game against Kansas City. Mangini said he never considered bringing in backup Seneca Wallace Sunday after Delhomme got hurt. Wallace would be the logical choice to replace Delhomme should he be unable to play, but he would not be a recommended option in Fantasy leagues. It's likely Delhomme will undergo an MRI, which will give doctors the most detailed look at his ankle. He completed 20 of 37 passes for 227 yards in Week 1. He threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Mohamed Massaquoi, but was also intercepted twice in the game and is still not an advisable play in most Fantasy formats. He could be useful to you once the bye weeks come around or if injuries put you in a tough spot, but this injury makes him unappealing off the waiver wire.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme made his debut with his new team in Week 1 at Tampa Bay. He completed 20 of 37 passes for 227 yards. He threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Mohamed Massaquoi, but was also intercepted twice in the game. Delhomme suffered just his third loss to his former division rival in his 13th career meeting against them.
Analysis: Delhomme got off to a quick start in the game, moving the ball well in the first quarter. However, the Buccaneers defense was able to settle in and keep him in check the remainder of the game and eventually whipped up enough of a pass rush to force him into some bad throws. That lead to the pair of interceptions, which were crucial in a 17-14 loss. The Browns pass offense continues to lack a big time receiver, but what Delhomme was able to do on Sunday was distribute the ball to several receivers. Nine different Browns caught a pass. The veteran quarterback may be able to make something out of nothing in Cleveland this season, but remains at best a low-end No. 2 QB going into Week 2 against the Chiefs.
News: New Browns QB Jake Delhomme is not only familiar with his Week 1 opponent Tampa Bay, but he's also had success against the Bucs. He is 10-2 in 12 career starts against his former division rival. He faced the Buccaneers once in 2009 in his last season with the Panthers, but was limited to just 65 yards on 9 of 17 passing. He threw one touchdown in the game and was intercepted twice in a 28-21 win.
Analysis: Delhomme should be familiar with the Bucs, having faced them twice a year throughout his NFL career. The Bucs defense ranked 10th in the NFL against the pass last season, but they did allow 28 touchdowns in 16 games and were prone to giving up big plays. Delhomme will be making his first official start with the Browns after throwing for 345 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason. He is owned in just 13 percent of CBSSports.com leagues going into the season and isn't a player who will be active in very many leagues -- if any -- in Week 1 as there aren't very high expectations of the Browns offense. His primary targets include Mohamed Massaquoi and Brian Robiskie. If you are in a bind already in Week 1, we don't think Delhomme will be your solution.
News:The Sports Xchange reports the primary mission for the Browns in training camp was settling the quarterback situation, and that happened quickly when Jake Delhomme justified the faith that team president Mike Holmgren showed in him. Delhomme earned the job in OTAs and minicamp and then kept it going through the first week of training camp. He played only one series against the Packers in the first preseason game. He completed 6 of 7 passes for 66 yards on a touchdown drive. By the time the Browns finished their third preseason game, Delhomme was set for the real games to begin. He completed 38 of 48 passes for 345 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the preseason. He is as far removed from the eight touchdown-18 interception season he had with the Panthers last year as Charlotte is from Cleveland. "Being in a new place is the biggest factor in putting last season behind me," Delhomme said when his preseason work was over. "It's funny. I was texting my wife and she said, 'Good job. That smile was back. I like seeing that.' We've been together a long time -- since high school. I believe in having fun. We're out there playing a kids game. I'm having a whole lot of fun."
Analysis: While Delhomme is having a strong preseason, Fantasy owners haven't put much stock into it. He is owned in just 16 percent of Fantasy leagues and isn't even among the top 30 Fantasy QBs drafted in CBSSports.com leagues. He is behind the likes of rookie Sam Bradford, Jason Campbell, Matt Moore and Matt Leinart. Yes, the same Matt Leinart that is expected to either start the season on the bench in Arizona or get traded. It is just the preseason, but Delhomme is clearly playing with a chip on his shoulder. Cleveland does have some depth and talent issues at wide receiver we would like to see cleared up, but maybe Delhomme can use his veteran experience to get the most out of his receivers. Delhomme remains just a late-round Fantasy flier on Draft Day.
News: Cleveland QB Jake Delhomme had another quality outing in the third preseason game Saturday at Detroit. Delhomme was 20 of 25 passing for 152 yards and a touchdown to Lawrence Vickers. He also had two carries for 2 yards. Through three preseason games he has only had 10 incomplete passes on 48 attempts with two touchdowns and no interceptions. "He was outstanding tonight," coach Eric Mangini said. "Hes been outstanding all preseason. The way that he runs the offense and gets into a good play when were not necessarily in the best situation, thats what Im looking for from our quarterback.
Analysis: Delhomme looks rejuvenated playing with the Browns after spending most of his career in Carolina. He doesn't have tremendous weapons in Cleveland with a limited WR corps, and the Browns appear content to keep the passing game under control with short passes. But Delhomme, if he keeps up this type of production, could be used as a bye-week replacement in deeper leagues. In standard formats, however, don't plan on taking Delhomme on Draft Day.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme overcame a rough start Saturday to put together his second solid performance in as many games. Cleveland couldn't muster a first down on their opening three possessions, one ending with a Delhomme fumble, another ending with a sack. But on their fourth possession, he led them on an 11-play, 77-yard drive that resulted in a 6-yard touchdown pass to TE Benjamin Watson. The Browns scored 10 points with Delhomme behind center in the first half. He finished 12 of 16 for 127 yards, completing passes to five different receivers.
Analysis: Delhomme is off to a fine start in the preseason. He's completed 18 of 23 passes for 193 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, and appears very comfortable in this offense. While he should rebound from a poor season in 2009, Delhomme has never been a major player in Fantasy because he doesn't put up huge numbers. We rate him as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB at best.
News: One drive: 11 plays, 80 yards in under six minutes. That's all it took for Jake Delhomme to convince many Cleveland fans that the Browns' seemingly endless problems at quarterback are history. Well, it's way too early to proclaim the team's QB problems over, but Delhomme's brief but bright exhibition debut on Saturday night in Green Bay went a long way toward restoring the veteran's image, and it helped further faith that president Mike Holmgren can revive the Browns. In his first -- and only -- series, Delhomme went 6 of 7 for 66 yards and moved the Browns to a quick touchdown against a highly regarded Packers defense. Cleveland rallied after blowing a 14-0 lead to win 27-24 on a last-second field goal, but Delhomme's performance was both a personal victory and vindication for Holmgren, who raised some eyebrows when he signed the 35-year-old free agent as one of his first executive acts in March and discarded both Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson. "Jake did an excellent job on the first drive," coach Eric Mangini said Monday. "We were able to do a lot of things against a team we weren't able to do much against last year."
Analysis: Beginning with his first throw, a 17-yard completion to tight end Evan Moore, Delhomme was efficient, decisive and polished. With Delhomme in charge, Cleveland's offense, ranked dead last statistically in the NFL last season, clicked like it rarely has in recent years. Delhomme is definitely playing with a chip on his shoulder after a dreadful year in 2009 in which he threw only eight touchdowns and 18 interceptions before having his season cut short by a broken finger. Still, it's only a preseason game, so we can't get overly excited until we see a better body of work from Delhomme. He remains a No. 2 Fantasy QB on Draft Day.
News: Browns QB Jake Delhomme was effective during the one possession he was in for during Saturday's game against the Packers. He went 6 of 7 for 66 yards while leading Cleveland to a touchdown on their opening drive. Three of his six completions went to WR Mohamed Massaquoi, two more going to TE Evan Moore.
Analysis: Delhomme is looking for a fresh start in Cleveland after a dreadful year in 2009 in which he threw only eight touchdowns but 18 interceptions before having his season cut short by a broken finger. He sure looked good Saturday, even if it was only a preseason game, however his weapons on offense remain a question mark. He never really made an impact in Fantasy, so consider him a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB at best.
News: For a refreshing change, there is no controversy over who will start at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. But that doesn't mean there isn't a stadium full of questions about the guy -- Jake Delhomme -- set to take the first snap at Tampa Bay on Sept. 12. Coming off a miserable season in Carolina where he encountered what one publication delicately called "a 13-month turnover problem," the former Pro Bowler knows that at the age of 35 he has to prove all over again that he can lead an NFL offense. "The older you get -- and this is the approach that I take -- is that this is my last year," he said. "Next year I'm going to say the same thing. You just don't know in this league. I think you start to appreciate it more and start to enjoy it because this is a privilege."
Analysis: Delhomme struggled with turnovers a year ago. He threw 18 interceptions and only eight touchdown passes. He looked old, he looked confused and he looked as if he was done. After seven strong years with the Panthers and a 58-40 record as a starter, his one poor season resulted in the Panthers releasing him in early March. Hiding his tears behind sunglasses, Delhomme, a horse owner, vowed that he wasn't "ready to go home and play with the horses just yet." About a week after his release, Delhomme signed a two-year deal with the Browns that will pay him a guaranteed $7 million the first season. Despite his errant throws last season, and despite his age, Delhomme became the starter almost by default. New Browns president Mike Holmgren said he was a marked improvement. Delhomme looked good in offseason workouts and has gained the confidence of second-year coach Eric Mangini. "Jake is an older guy who has got a real presence and he's got a real control of the offense," he said after Saturday's first workout of fall camp. "He's got a lot of respect, which is deserved for the things that he has been able to do. But he backs that up with his work ethic and he backs it up with his leadership." Even though Delhomme heads into the season as a starting QB, he doesn't have a ton of high-end weapons at receiver or tight end. Delhomme will be at best a late-round flier in deeper Fantasy formats on Draft Day. In most leagues, he can probably go undrafted.
News: Browns coach Eric Mangini went on a radio show Monday morning and praised QB Jake Delhomme, who will enter training camp as the starter ahead of Seneca Wallace. "It's really Jake's job to lose, and he did a great job during OTAs," Mangini said on the Dan Patrick Radio Show. "I couldn't have been happier with him, not just in terms of the way he learned the information but the way he ran the offense." But Mangini said he's also impressed with Wallace, and he wants to make sure Wallace gets time working with the first-string offense during camp. "Seneca did a good job too," Mangini said. "I think it's important that Seneca gets some reps with the ones, so that if he goes in he does have some time with that group."
Analysis: Delhomme should open the season as the No. 1 QB in Cleveland, but he has minimal Fantasy value. The passing game in Cleveland doesn't have many weapons, and we don't see Delhomme posting outstanding stats. He should be viewed as a No. 3 Fantasy QB in standard leagues, and he's only worth drafting as a No. 2 option in deep leagues in 2010.
News:Jake Delhomme appears to be everything the Browns' brass was hoping for when they signed him and is all but considered their primary passer for the 2010 season. The Cleveland Plain Dealer saw Delhomme go through drills this offseason and noted that he's been accurate and solid with his reads -- which is precisely what Cleveland wanted.
Analysis: Delhomme is expected to take on most of the reps at quarterback this season, though the Browns have added a Wildcat package that includes Josh Cribbs and Seneca Wallace. For those plays, Delhomme will most likely be on the sideline. We don't expect Delhomme to be a stat monster, particularly in an offense lacking receiving talent and with a tough schedule. Keep him off of rosters unless you're desperate for a passer.
News: Browns head coach Eric Mangini said Thursday that QB Jake Delhomme is getting comfortable with the team's offense and has raised eyebrows with some of the things he's been doing during their offseason practices, including calling audibles to his receivers and improving his cadence. "He's had a really good week," Mangini said of Delhomme. "Jake just picks things up and some of it is him picking up and some of it is just him knowing, him understanding, and you don't have to go too in depth with why you're doing it because he gets it. ... It's nice too from a defensive perspective because he's challenging those guys. If your disguise isn't right, he's going to get you."
Analysis: Delhomme is a nice story, but if you're planning to lean on him for Fantasy help you're stretching. Because of the awful play we've seen from him over the last two years, he's nothing more than a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB at this time -- especially since the Browns' receiving corps isn't overly impressive. Unless you start two quarterbacks in your league, expect Delhomme to go undrafted this summer.
News: Browns coach Eric Mangini is already fond of new QB Jake Delhomme. "The things we heard about his leadership has shown up since we've been here," Mangini said Wednesday following OTA workouts. "He has great energy. He reminds me a little of (Brett) Favre that way. He enjoys practice, being around the guys." The Canton Repository reports Delhomme, who joined the Browns after being released by the Panthers, is expected to be the starter in Week 1 even if Mangini has said Seneca Wallace or even rookie Colt McCoy could win the job. WR Josh Cribbs said the same thing on NFL.com. "Jake Delhomme is our veteran quarterback," Cribbs said. "He's a guy that's going to usher in all the up-and-coming talent. Seneca Wallace will be a triple-threat, running, passing and Wildcat. He'll be the relief pitcher. Colt McCoy will be the future."
Analysis: Delhomme should be considered a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB, and he's only worth drafting in deep formats. Wallace has minimal Fantasy value and should be ignored in all leagues on Draft Day. McCoy isn't worth drafting in the majority of seasonal leagues, but he has plenty of upside in keeper and rookie-only drafts. Those are really the only formats where McCoy should be taken on Draft Day unless he surprisingly is named the starter for this year, but that would mean that Delhomme completely fell apart in training camp, which isn't expected to happen.
News: The Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports Browns WR Mohamed Massaquoi, the leading receiver from last year's returning group, which includes Josh Cribbs, Chansi Stuckey and Brian Robiskie, is ready for a big year. He's also confident in his teammates. "[Robiskie's] primed for a good year," Massaquoi said. "I'm primed for a breakout year. Stuckey's been working hard. Josh is still going to be the dynamic player that he is." Massaquoi tied for the team lead with 34 catches in 2009 and led the Browns with 624 yards (18.4-yard average) and three touchdowns. He had 100-plus yard games against Cincinnati and Detroit.
Analysis: Massaquoi believes a number of factors will elevate the play of the receivers, from another year in the system to the addition of Mike Holmgren and top aide Gil Haskell, Holmgren's longtime offensive coordinator in Green Bay and Seattle and the complete overhaul of the quarterback depth chart with Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace replacing Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson. "We all know how the passing game went last year," Massaquoi said. "It can only get better. You plug in a guy like Jake Delhomme ... he's a Super Bowl quarterback. He's going to tell us what he expects out of us. We're going to be able to learn from him and grow more." If Massaquoi has a breakout year and Robiskie improves along with the play of Cribbs and Stuckey then Delhomme should play well. That said, he's just a No. 2 Fantasy QB with a lot to prove. He's not worth drafting in the majority of leagues.
News: The Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports Browns president Mike Holmgren said he doesn't expect rookie QB Colt McCoy to play in 2010, but he wouldn't rule it out that he could be the starter either. "Heck, if he's the guy, he plays," Holmgren said. Browns coach Eric Mangini also did not completely rule out McCoy for 2010 during rookie camp. "Never say never and never say always," Mangini said. "You don't know." But Holmgren and Mangini have a plan in place for McCoy. They want to let McCoy watch how it's done behind projected starter Jake Delhomme and backup Seneca Wallace. Holmgren said he expects Delhomme will rebound from his poor 2009 season. "He had a horrible year last year by his own admission and I understand why, I believe, and I think he'll be fine," Holmgren said. "In fact, I think he'll help our team because he's a great leader."
Analysis: It sounds like unless McCoy is lights out in training camp and the preseason and Delhomme and Wallace fall on their face then McCoy will be the No. 3 QB for the Browns this year with Delhomme the starter. McCoy isn't worth drafting in the majority of seasonal leagues, but he has plenty of upside in keeper and rookie-only drafts. Those are really the only formats where McCoy should be taken on Draft Day unless he surprisingly is named the starter for this year. Delhomme should be considered a low-end No. 2 QB, and he's only worth drafting in deep formats. And Wallace has minimal Fantasy value and should be ignored in all leagues on Draft Day.
News: The Browns spent a third-round pick on Texas QB Colt McCoy in the 2010 NFL Draft, but the team insists he won't have much of a chance to trump Jake Delhomme or Seneca Wallace on the depth chart. "We have some other quarterbacks who've come in to do some other things," team President Mike Holmgren said. "Colt's one of four." Delhomme joined the Browns this offseason after being released by the Panthers.
Analysis: Delhomme will likely be the favorite to win the job over Wallace based on his experience, but Wallace also has the backing of Holmgren, who coached Wallace in Seattle. Holmgren previously said about Wallace: "[He] will come in and compete and you guys will like what you see. ... I think he is a potential starter." Fantasy owners aren't very excited over either QB, which means that whomever is named the starter between Delhomme and Wallace won't be any better than a low-end No. 2 option come Draft Day.
News: Browns coach Eric Mangini said in an interview with CBSSports.com at the NFL owner's meeting in Orlando, FL that he's impressed with QB Jake Delhomme, who signed with Cleveland last week after he was released from Carolina. Delhomme is expected to compete with Seneca Wallace for the starting job, but Mangini already likes what he's seen from Delhomme. "He has all the intangibles you look for in a quarterback," Mangini said. "I like his leadership. I like his presence in the locker room." Mangini also said he had no concern over Delhomme's age (35) or durability.
Analysis: Delhomme will likely be the favorite to win the job over Wallace based on his experience, but Wallace also has the backing of team president Mike Holmgren, who coached Wallace in Seattle.
News: Speaking to the media on Monday, Browns President Mike Holmgren announced that the Browns will have a "heck of a competition" for their starting quarterback job between newcomers Jake Delhomme, Seneca Wallace and anyone else the team acquires. Not ruling out drafting a quarterback, Holmgren reflected on the quarterback mistakes the franchise made in the past, but also is focused on the passers he has now. Holmgren on Delhomme: "This team needs an aging veteran who's going to grab everybody by the throat and say 'Follow me through that door.'" Holmgren on Wallace: "[He] will come in and compete and you guys will like what you see. ... I think he is a potential starter."
Analysis: Fantasy owners aren't very excited over either quarterback, which means that whomever is named the starter between Delhomme and Wallace won't be any better than a low-end No. 2 option come Draft Day -- and even that is flimsy since it seems like a longshot that the Browns will start the same quarterback for all 16 games. We'll keep you posted but don't expect the Browns' quarterbacks to be very productive.
News:Jake Delhomme has a new NFL home, and the Cleveland Browns have another new QB. Delhomme, released last week by the Carolina Panthers, has agreed to terms on a two-year deal with the Browns, whose quarterback position has been nothing short of a merry-go-round of players since the club returned as an expansion team 11 years ago. Cleveland has been busy trying to resolve a troublesome position. Earlier this week, the Browns acquired backup Seneca Wallace and released Derek Anderson, a one-time Pro Bowl selection who has struggled in the past two seasons. They then traded Brady Quinn to the Broncos, and Delhomme now has a chance to remain a starter in 2010.
Analysis: Delhomme is coming off his worst season as a pro. He threw 18 interceptions and the Panthers decided to cut him despite still owing him more than $12 million. Delhomme went 58-40 as a starter with Carolina, leading the franchise to its lone Super Bowl appearance to end the 2003 season. Delhomme will compete with Wallace for the starting job this season, but look for Cleveland to also add a QB in the draft. Even if Delhomme is the No. 1 QB for the Browns he would be nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy option in deep leagues. Ignore Delhomme in the majority of leagues on Draft Day.
News: The Carolina Panthers cut Jake Delhomme late Thursday, just over a year after they gave him a lucrative contract extension only to watch him have his worst season as a pro. It signals the Panthers intend to go with Matt Moore or someone new at quarterback for the first time since Delhomme burst onto the scene in 2003. Jake Delhomme's 2009 season began with a thud four interceptions vs. the Eagles and it never got going. Two years removed from major elbow surgery, Delhomme had one game with multiple touchdown passes and two games over 300 yards. His season ended when a finger injury kept him from playing, effectively losing the starting job to backup Matt Moore before ending the year on injured reserve. Delhomme completed 178 of 321 passes (a career-worst 55.5 comp. pct.) for 2,015 yards (a career-worst 6.28 yards per att.) with 18 interceptions (also a career-worst) and eight touchdowns (a career-worst in seasons with more than three starts). He also lost three fumbles.
Analysis: We doubt Delhomme will land a starting job again soon, but he could have a future as a veteran backup presence on a team with a young quarterback. Matt Moore emerges as a viable No. 2 QB in deeper leagues or as a one-week replacement off the waiver wire in standard formats.
News: There will be a competition for the Panthers' starting quarterback job, according to GM Marty Hurney. After Jake Delhomme's collapse in 2009 and Matt Moore's late-season surge, the team is not going to give one of their players the top gig until after their play is evaluated this summer. "It's the end of February and it's way too early to answer that," Hurney said when asked about who his starting quarterback would be. "Everyone knows how we feel about Jake. And Matt came in and played very well at the end of the year. I think that we go through the process and see what happens."
Analysis: Fantasy owners won't touch Delhomme in 2010, and they won't touch Moore if he's not the starter. But our hunch is that Moore has the edge seeing as how Delhomme struggled last season and seems to be fading. Regardless, neither of these guys are Fantasy starters, and Moore would be at best a low-end No. 2 option if he lands the starting job. This will be a battle we'll follow throughout the offseason.
News: The Panthers have placed QB Jake Delhomme (finger) on IR. He will now miss the final two games of the season. "We thought he might be further along as far as his finger," coach John Fox said. "We kind of looked at it this week as far as gripping the ball, throwing the ball and it wasn't up to speed."
Analysis: Matt Moore had already been slated to be the starter for these final two games, so this move won't have any Fantasy impact. Consider Moore a No. 2 Fantasy QB in Week 16 at the Giants and obviously release Delhomme in seasonal formats if you haven't already. Delhomme also might have played his last game for Carolina, which was a subject that Fox did not care to address Thursday. "I'm sure there will be a lot of talk," Fox said. "There usually is. But with us all of our focus is on the New York Giants. After that week we'll finish up with the New Orleans Saints and evaluate everything after that -- and that's true of our whole football team."
News: Panthers coach John Fox offered no info Monday on whether QB Jake Delhomme will practice this week after missing the last three games with a broken finger. It hardly matters at this point as Matt Moore is entrenched as the starter -- at least for the remainder of this season. Moore started his third game for Delhomme on Sunday against Minnesota and was 21 of 33 passing for 299 yards and three touchdowns. He also had five carries for minus-2 yards.
Analysis: Moore showed he could play well against a tough defense in the Vikings, and he now has four touchdowns in his past two games. He's also doing a good job getting the ball to Steve Smith. Over the past three games with Moore at QB, Smith has averaged 106 yards per game with two TDs. In the previous 11 games with Delhomme at the helm Smith averaged 54.9 yards per game with four TDs. Consider Moore a No. 2 Fantasy QB in Week 16 at the Giants and don't use Delhomme in any formats. Hopefully we can also see Smith play well with Moore finishing the year as the starter.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme was listed as inactive for Sunday's game against Minnesota. Delhomme was expected to miss this game with a finger injury. It's the third consecutive game Delhomme will be out, and Matt Moore will start against the Vikings.
Analysis: Keep Delhomme reserved in all leagues, and he has minimal Fantasy value when healthy. Keep Moore reserved as well since he has little upside against the Vikings with two key offensive linemen out for Carolina.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme will miss his third consecutive straight game Sunday night against the Vikings with a broken finger, coach John Fox said. Delhomme is listed as out on the injury report. Matt Moore will start.
Analysis: Don't plan on using Delhomme or Moore against the Vikings. Neither has high expectations in what should be a tough matchup for the Panthers.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme missed his second straight day of practice Thursday, almost ensuring that Matt Moore will get his third straight start on Sunday night against Minnesota.
Analysis: Don't plan on using Delhomme or Moore against the Vikings. Neither has much Fantasy value in what should be a tough matchup.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme was again sidelined on Wednesday, and Matt Moore is expected to make his third straight start vs. Minnesota in Week 15. Delhomme hasn't practiced or played since breaking a finger on his throwing hand on Nov. 29. It is unknown when, or if, Delhomme will be able to practice again this season.
Analysis: The reality is that whoever starts for the Panthers in Week 15 against a tough Vikings defense isn't worth using in Fantasy play. Keep them all off of Fantasy rosters this late in the season.
News: Panthers coach John Fox declined to declare Matt Moore the starter next Sunday against Minnesota, saying veteran Jake Delhomme remains "day-to-day." He also danced around whether Delhomme will return for meaningless late-season games ahead of Moore, who was 15 of 30 for 197 yards and one touchdown against the Patriots. But there's more -- when asked if there's a possibility someone other than Matt Moore or Jake Delhomme (meaning A.J. Feeley) will start Sunday night at quarterback, Fox replied, "It's hard to look into the crystal ball. ... When we get back (to work) Wednesday we'll look at our best options."
Analysis: The reality is that whoever starts for the Panthers in Week 15 against a tough Vikings defense isn't worth using in Fantasy play. Keep them all off of Fantasy rosters this late in the season.
News: The Panthers have listed the following players as inactive for Week 14 at New England: QB Jake Delhomme, DB C.J. Wilson, DE Tyler Brayton, RB Mike Goodson, RB Tony Fiammetta, DT Derek Landri and WR Kenneth Moore.
Analysis: Apart from Delhomme, who was already declared out earlier this week, none of these guys have any Fantasy value. Delhomme remains worth stashing in only deeper formats.
News: Carolina's Matt Moore will make his second straight start this weekend when the Panthers play at New England. Jake Delhomme was declared out for Sunday's game and missed his third straight day of practice Friday with a broken right finger. Panthers coach John Fox says it's still difficult for the 11-year veteran to grip the football. Fox says Delhomme is "day-to-day" and that Carolina will "go with our quarterbacks who are healthy enough to do it."
Analysis: The reality is that it doesn't matter who starts for Carolina in Week 14 because the matchup will be fairly tough for them. Moore only has Steve Smith as a reliable receiver, and he should see plenty of coverage. Besides, the Panthers are a running team. Moore is no better than a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme was again sidelined on Thursday and Matt Moore is expected to make his second straight start at New England in Week 14. Delhomme hasn't practiced or played since breaking a finger on his throwing hand on Nov. 29. It is unknown when Delhomme will be able to practice again. Moore went 14 of 20 in the Week 13 win for 161 yards and no touchdowns.
Analysis: The reality is that it doesn't matter who starts for Carolina in Week 14 when they play at New England because the matchup will be fairly tough for them. Besides, the Panthers are a running team. Neither Moore nor Delhomme are any better than a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB in Week 14.
News: A day after the Panthers beat Tampa Bay 16-6, coach John Fox was typically evasive on Monday. He wouldn't declare Moore the starter next week at New England, said he didn't know when Jake Delhomme would be able to practice again, and replied "I can't answer ifs" when asked if Delhomme starts again when his broken finger is healed.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme is ruled inactive for Week 13 against the Buccaneers. He has a right finger injury.
Analysis: Delhomme only ever has low-end Fantasy value even when healthy and active. Leave him on benches or waivers in any league during Week 13.
News: Wearing his baseball cap backward, Matt Moore walked into the Panthers locker room Thursday and immediately began joking around with his golfing buddy, kicker Rhys Lloyd. If Moore was nervous that he's about to make only his fourth career start and his first since 2007, he sure wasn't showing it. "I think the fact that he is laid-back will help him," Lloyd said. "Not a whole lot of things bother him." With Jake Delhomme sidelined with a broken finger on his throwing hand, Moore is preparing to take over the Panthers' struggling offense Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "I think Matt is going to do an outstanding job," Delhomme said. "When he played in '07, here was a guy who came in the first week in September. So he didn't have a basis for what we were doing."
Analysis: This is good news for Moore, but he has minimal Fantasy value. Don't plan on using him in Week 13 against Tampa Bay. You should also keep Delhomme reserved since he's out, and he also has minimal Fantasy value when healthy.
News: Panthers coach John Fox on Jake Delhomme's broken middle finger: "Obviously, there is some discomfort there; it did swell up. It (ball) is a little harder to grip. Grip is fairly important when you're throwing the ball. It is his throwing hand which makes it a little more difficult. We'll see what he can tolerate as we go forward." Delhomme was held out of practice Wednesday as the team prepares for its Week 13 game against the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Delhomme's been awful this season and backup Matt Moore deserves a chance to lead the offense. The Panthers also might be curious to see what he can do now that the playoffs seem unlikely. Whomever starts for the Panthers in Week 13 against the Bucs is no better than a No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: Panthers head coach John Fox said Monday that starting quarterback Jake Delhomme broke a finger on his right throwing hand Sunday against the Jets and his status for this week is up in the air. That could mean backup QB Matt Moore might start this week against Tampa Bay. Moore might have been starting anyway as Delhomme threw four interceptions against the Jets and has 18 on the season. "We'll evaluate that as we move foward," coach John Fox said. "Obviously he'll be day-to-day and we'll see what he can take and can't take. I would say it would be pretty hard-pressed for him to take snaps Wednesday."
Analysis: Delhomme's been awful this season and Moore deserves a chance to lead the offense. The Panthers also might be curious to see what he can do now that the playoffs seem like unlikely. Whomever starts for the Panthers in Week 13 against the Bucs is no better than a No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme was back to his turnover ways Sunday at the Jets. Delhomme was 14 of 34 passing for 130 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions. He now has eight touchdowns and 18 interceptions on the season.
Analysis: Delhomme is capable of miserable games like this, which is why he is not a good Fantasy option. Ignore Delhomme in all Fantasy leagues in Week 13 against Tampa Bay.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme had a decent game against Miami on Thursday but it was not enough to pick up the win. Delhomme completed 19 of his 42 passes in the game for 227 yards with a TD pass to Steve Smith and an interception. He also carried the ball twice for 17 yards. The Panthers offense was particularly poor in the red zone Week 11. "It's execution because we're not getting in," Delhomme said after the game. "It's not the play calling. They were doing a good job, especially in there on a couple of third downs with their four-man rush. They were dropping seven and those windows were really tight to try to find some guys in there. There's no pointing fingers. We didn't get it done."
Analysis: Delhomme has been playing better of late, compiling a 115.8 passer rating in Week 10 against Atlanta. That number dropped to 60.3 Week 11 against Miami, but he did enough to keep his team in the game and move the ball down the field consistently. Despite his improvements, Delhomme remains just a low-end Fantasy QB at this point in his career. The Panthers have a road game against the Jets in Week 12. The Jets have one of the top pass defenses in the league, making Delhomme a poor option.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme played pretty well on Sunday of Week 10 as the Panthers defeated the Atlanta Falcons. Delhomme threw for 195 yards in the game but had touchdown passes of 4 yards each, both to Steve Smith. Delhomme finished 15 of 24 passing on the day and added 11 yards rushing on four carries.
Analysis: Delhomme has not thrown for over 201 yards in three straight games and has three touchdowns and no picks over that span. He has 13 interceptions on the season but none in his last three games and that certainly soothes the naysayers that believe he should be pulled. Carolina hosts Miami on Thursday night in Week 11. The Dolphins are among the worst in the NFL against the pass but entering Week 10 gave up just 94.5 yards per game on the ground and rank among the best in the league in stopping the run. That means you can expect Delhomme to throw a good deal and he should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy QB for the game.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme, who came into the game with 13 interceptions compared to only five touchdown passes, didn't throw a touchdown pass Week 9 at New Orleans, but he didn't throw an interception either. He completed 17 of 30 passes for 201 yards. He did lose a fumble, though, getting two carries for minus-6 yards.
Analysis: Only two times this season has Delhomme not thrown an interception, but they've come in the last two games. The Panthers are asking less of him, using DeAngelo Williams more over the last few weeks, and he's delivering with mistake-free football. Still, this approach doesn't lend itself to many big Fantasy performances. Delhomme remains a last resort for Week 10 against the Falcons.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme is active for Week 9 at New Orleans after leaving last week's game early with a chest injury. He was able to practice in full all week.
Analysis: Delhomme might have a solid history against the Saints, but this year's version is undefeated and ready to add to Delhomme's 13 interceptions compared to just five touchdown passes. He's just a last resort in Fantasy.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme (chest) proved he was fine to play Week 9 at New Orleans by going through a full practiceall week. Delhomme was taken to a hospital after being hit in the chest in Week 8 but results came back negative and he should be fine for the game Sunday. In two games against the Saints last year, Delhomme completed 14 passes in each for 195 and 250 yards and combined for three touchdowns and no interceptions. In fact, in his last five games against the Saints he's thrown eight touchdowns and just one pick. Delhomme is considered probable for the team's Week 9 game.
Analysis: Delhomme might have a solid history against the Saints but this year's version is undefeated and ready to add to Delhomme's 13 interceptions on the season compared to just five touchdown passes. He still remains a low-end Fantasy option and should be considered nothing more than a No. 2 QB against the Saints.
News: The Carolina Growl reports Panthers QB Jake Delhomme was taken to a local hospital after a hit to the chest Sunday at Arizona, but a CT Scan was negative. Delhomme said he will play next week against New Orleans. "Oh yeah, definitely," Delhomme said when asked if he'll play against the Saints. He said he has a chest contusion or "something like that. Everything is good." Delhomme left the game late in the third quarter for two plays after being hit by Arizona DL Darnell Dockett. He returned the next series, but then left the game for good after that. Matt Moore led the Panthers the rest of the way, although he only attempted one pass.
Analysis: Delhomme finished the Cardinals game 7 of 14 passing for 90 yards and a touchdown. He still remains a low-end Fantasy option and should be considered nothing more than a No. 2 QB against the Saints.
News: Panthers fans calling for QB Jake Delhomme to get off the field got their wish Week 8 at Arizona, but not in the way they imagined. Delhomme suffered a chest injury and left in the third quarter, then returned briefly, then left for good in the fourth quarter. Matt Moore replaced him. Delhomme, who was at risk of losing his job after throwing three interceptions against the Bills last week, had an efficient but unspectacular performance, finishing 7 of 14 for 90 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown came on a 50-yard pass to Steve Smith in the second quarter.
Analysis: Delhomme said after returning from the hospital that the injury was a chest contusion and that no serious problem was detected. He performed well enough to save his job, but he didn't do anything to put him back on the radar in Fantasy. The Panthers ran for more than 200 yards Sunday and look like they prefer to win that way, putting Delhomme in the position of game manager. With his low yardage and turnover-prone ways, he's nothing more than a last resort for Week 9 at New Orleans, assuming he's healthy enough to play.
News:Jake Delhomme will remain Carolina's starting quarterback despite an NFL-high 13 interceptions in six games. Backups Matt Moore and A.J. Feeley will remain benched. Coach John Fox announced after practice Wednesday that he still thinks Delhomme gives the Panthers "the best chance to win" and won't bench him, something he contemplated earlier in the week. Delhomme has committed 15 turnovers while throwing only four touchdown passes in Carolina's 2-4 start. He had three more picks Sunday, leading to 14 points in Buffalo's 20-9 win.
Analysis: Even with a halfway decent matchup in Week 8 at Arizona staring him in the face, Delhomme cannot be trusted in Fantasy play. Keep him benched and keep Moore and Feeley off of Fantasy rosters.
News: Panthers coach John Fox hasn't decided whether to bench quarterback Jake Delhomme. Saying Monday that he doesn't know if the "status quo is the answer or not," Fox indicated he'll decide later this week whether to play Matt Moore or A.J. Feeley ahead of Delhomme, who has an NFL-high 13 interceptions in six games. It's the first time Fox has wavered on Delhomme, who threw three more picks Sunday, two of which directly led to 14 Bills points in Buffalo's 20-9 win. Delhomme has been Carolina's starter since 2003, but has just four touchdown passes on the season.
Analysis: Maybe the misery will finally end for Delhomme's Fantasy owners. Of course, if you own Delhomme in Fantasy, you either stopped paying attention early or you play in an especially deep league. Quarterbacks with that kind of touchdown-to-interception ratio don't make good Fantasy options, especially when they've twice thrown for less than 100 yards in a game. If Delhomme keeps his job for Week 8 at Arizona, he's a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option. Matt Moore might not be any better arm-wise, but he might cut down on the turnovers.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme's interception total has reached an NFL-high 13 -- with only four touchdowns -- after he threw three more against the Bills in Week 7, finishing 27 of 44 for 325 yards. Coach John Fox said he'd "evaluate" whether Delhomme keeps his job. Delhomme badly overthrew two passes that led to 14 Buffalo points. Delhomme himself hedged when asked if he should remain the starter. "In my heart, yeah, but I mean let's be honest, I don't think I'm a dummy," said Delhomme, whose passer rating is 56.5. "When you're not playing well offensively, you always have to look at the quarterback."
2 Fantasy option, but it's not looking good.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme will face a non-division opponent in Week 7 against Buffalo. The Bills rank fourth in the NFL against the pass, giving up just 170.7 passing yards per game. They have allowed just six touchdowns in six games with 10 interceptions.
Analysis: The Bills have been very good at forcing interceptions and Delhomme has been very good at throwing them. He has thrown at least one in every game and has 10 in five games. Leave him out of active lineups for what appears to be a very unfavorable matchup.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme led his team to victory in Week 6 over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Delhomme, however, was not good in this game. He threw for just 65 yards on 9 of 17 passing with one touchdown and two interceptions. His touchdown pass went for one yard to tight end Jeff King and he has yet to throw a TD pass to a receiver this season. Delhomme also leads the NFL with 10 interceptions.
Analysis: For the season, Delhomme has a completion percentage of 59.4 percent with four touchdowns and 10 picks. The Panthers, despite the win, cannot be trusted and their quarterback should not be a viable Fantasy option almost regardless of who they play. Carolina plays Buffalo at home in Week 7. The Bills have been solid against the pass so we really don't like Delhomme's matchup against them.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme is 8-2 in 10 career starts against Tampa Bay, his Week 6 opponents. The Buccaneers are one of the few NFL teams that Carolina is probably better than at this point. Delhomme hasn't been much of a Fantasy option this season with just 782 passing yards and three touchdowns with eight interceptions. Despite his solid win-loss record against Tampa, in two games against them last season, Delhomme went 34 of 59 for 415 yards with one touchdown and five interceptions.
Analysis: Let's face it. Delhomme has been far worse this season than last. That said, so have the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay is among the worst defensive teams in the NFL this season and that makes Delhomme a worthy choice as a bye-week replacement. He's still not worth much more than that.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme did nothing to lose Sunday's game against the Redskins in Week 5. That resulted in him actually leading the Panthers to their first victory of the season against Washington's depleted defense and porous offense. Delhomme wasn't wonderful in the game. He threw for just 181 yards, his lowest total since throwing for 73 in a Week 1 loss, on 16 of 25 with a touchdown and an interception. Delhomme found Jeff King on a 17-yard TD pass in the 3rd quarter. He also hit Steve Smith on a 2-point conversion play in the 4th quarter that proved to be the game-winning score.
Analysis: Delhomme has still yet to throw a touchdown pass to a wide receiver this season. With three touchdown passes and eight interceptions, we still find it difficult to recommend his use in Fantasy play. Carolina plays at Tampa Bay in Week 6. The Bucs aren't terrible against the pass and we just can't see Delhomme being a worthy Fantasy option.
News:Jake Delhomme may have two touchdown passes and seven interceptions, but he'll remain winless Carolina's starting quarterback. When asked Wednesday if Delhomme was still his guy moving forward, coach John Fox replied, "Yes, with a capital Y." Delhomme threw two interceptions and lost a fumble in the Panthers' 21-7 loss to Dallas Monday to drop Carolina to 0-3. But the second pick, returned for a game-clinching touchdown, came when receiver Steve Smith broke off his route. Still, Delhomme is on bad streak -- he threw four interceptions in Carolina's season opening loss to Philadelphia and committed six turnovers in last season's playoff loss to Arizona.
Analysis: Delhomme's backups are A.J. Feeley and Matt Moore, so it's not like the Panthers have much of a choice. Fantasy owners have a choice, though, and in most leagues the waiver wire will have far more interesting choices than Delhomme as a starting QB. He's at best a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB until he snaps out of his funk. It's a pretty good idea to upgrade your backup QB via waivers if you can.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme did not have a good night throwing the football on Monday night against the Cowboys. Delhomme and his teammates lost the game 21-7 and he threw for 220 yards on 22 of 33 passing. Delhomme threw a touchdown pass to Dante Rosario in the 2nd quarter to get the scoring started but ended with two interceptions. He also lost a fumble in the closing minutes as he tried desperately to get his team back in the game.
Analysis: Delhomme has already thrown 7 picks in 2009 after throwing just 12 in all of 2008 for the Panthers. He's already been on the verge of getting benched and things didn't get any better in Week 3 on the biggest showcase. Carolina is now 0-3 on the season and heads into a bye week. Stay tuned to whether or not the team decides to stay with Delhomme for Week 5 against Washington. If he continues to start, he'll likely be a No. 2 option for that game.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme threw for 308 yards and a touchdown in Week 2 at Atlanta. He completed 25 of 41 passes and was intercepted once. He bounced back from a poor performance in Week 1 vs. Philadelphia when he threw four interceptions and was held to 74 passing yards.
Analysis: Delhomme and the Panthers fell to 0-2, but the quarterback showed he can be trusted to move the ball after his horrible Week 1 performance. He spread the ball around to eight different receivers and was on the same page with leading receiver Steve Smith again, connecting with him for 131 yards on eight receptions. Despite his rocky first outing, Delhomme can be trusted as a low-end No. 1 QB in larger leagues or as a decent No. 2 option for Week 3 at Dallas as long as he has a superb receiver like Smith to throw to.
News: Following an awful start to the 2009 season, which was similar to how his 2008 season ended, Panthers QB Jake Delhomme said Tuesday that he's interested in improving and showing his critics that he can still play. He also knows he has to prove that he's worth the contract extension he received last offseason. "I'd like to erase any doubts," Delhomme said, anxious to play at the Falcons in Week 2. "I don't think they have any. I really don't think they do. But I'd like to erase them if there are any at all this weekend."
Analysis: There's a glimmer of hope: Delhomme threw for over 290 yards in each of his meeting with the Falcons last season and has five touchdowns in his last three games against them. He'll need to do something like that in Week 2 to call off the folks asking for him to find the bench. He's worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy QB, but that's about it as there are too many other good quarterback options to rely on as a starter for the coming week.
News: The Charlotte Observer reports Panthers QB Jake Delhomme will remain the starter for Week 2 at Atlanta despite a poor performance in the season-opener against Philadelphia. Delhomme had four interceptions and a lost fumble against the Eagles, and he was playing his first meaningful game since throwing five interceptions and losing a fumble against Arizona in the playoffs. The Panthers don't have many options because backup Josh McCown suffered knee and foot injuries in limited action against the Eagles. "Obviously, I think we start back with Jake," Fox said. "I think we've got to go back and evaluate what happened to us. Personally, after not seeing the tape, I don't think that's all Jake's fault." Fox cited the Panthers' pass protection problems. "I think it's uncomfortable playing quarterack when you're getting sacked, knocked around," said Fox.
Analysis: Delhomme needs to bounce back with a strong game against the Falcons. In two regular-season games against Atlanta last season, Delhomme completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 589 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Still, consider him a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option at this point. He's not worth starting in any standard leagues.
News:Donovan McNabb was walking gingerly to the locker room with a cracked rib about the same time Jake Delhomme was mercifully yanked after his fifth turnover. It was the third quarter of the Philadelphia Eagles' 38-10 rout of the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, and both franchises suddenly had big worries about their veteran quarterbacks. One was injured two weeks before Michael Vick is eligible to return, the other can't seem to throw it to the right team anymore. Playing his first meaningful game since throwing five interceptions and losing a fumble against Arizona in the playoffs, Delhomme was constantly under pressure and nearly as bad in a miserable start for the defending NFC South champions. With the boos increasing before he was finally replaced by Josh McCown, Delhomme was 7 of 17 for 73 yards with four interceptions and a lost fumble. His passer rating was 14.7. "I hope so," Delhomme said, when asked if he deserves to be the starter next week against Atlanta. "I'm looking for the easy way out."
Analysis: While Panthers coach John Fox hinted Delhomme will remain the starter, his teammates were peppered with questions about their confidence in the 34-year-old quarterback two years removed from reconstructive elbow surgery. He may have to start since McCown left with knee and foot injuries. Third-stringer Matt Moore threw his own interception, one of Carolina's team record-tying seven turnovers. "The combination of hitting him, and him throwing a couple picks, it seemed like he got a little streaky," linebacker Chris Gocong said. "We kind of got him on his heels a little bit. It was a tough day for him." There weren't many positives to take out of the game for Delhomme, who remains a risky Fantasy start heading into Week 2 against the Falcons. In two regular-season games against Atlanta last season, Delhomme completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 589 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme had a first half to forget in Week 1 against the Eagles. Delhomme was responsible for three turnovers, including two interceptions. His fumble in the second quarter also resulted in a 2-yard touchdown score for defensive lineman Victor Abiamiri. Delhomme finished the half 7 of 15 for 73 yards.
Analysis: We weren't really expecting a lot from Delhomme from a Fantasy perspective in 2009, but getting off to this poor of a start is not a good sign. His performance also impacts the Panthers receivers, including Steve Smith, who is widely considered a No. 1 Fantasy option at his position.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme was 5 of 7 passing for 47 yards in Saturday's preseason game at Miami. Delhomme was playing without his two starting wide receivers in Steve Smith (shoulder) and Muhsin Muhammad (groin). Both receivers were in uniform but did not play.
Analysis: Delhomme will have Smith and Muhammad ready for the start of the season, but Delhomme remains a No. 2 Fantasy QB. Even though Smith is a dynamic WR and Muhammad and Dwayne Jarrett are good complementary options, Delhomme doesn't post enough quality stats to use on a weekly basis as a No. 1 QB.
News: The Charlotte Observer reports Panthers QB Jake Delhomme is excited for training camp so he can forget about his last game, which was a playoff loss against the Cardinals when he had six turnovers. "Well, the last time I played wasn't too darn good," Delhomme said. "I always felt I had thick skin. I think I added another layer on top of it. You go (through) ups and downs. Certainly, it was a down. We're looking for more ups."
Analysis: Delhomme has one of the best receivers in the NFL in Steve Smith, but he's still just a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB. He's worth a late-round pick as a backup option in deeper leagues. If Muhsin Muhammad and Dwayne Jarrett develop, then maybe Delhomme can improve, but he's not worth drafting in most standard formats.
News: The Charlotte Observer reports there are no questions that Jake Delhomme is the starting QB for the Panthers this year. Even though Delhomme had six turnovers (five interceptions, one fumble) in the loss to Arizona in the playoffs, Delhomme remains No. 1 on the depth chart coming into the season. He led the team to a 12-4 regular-season record in 2008. Although he finished in the middle of the NFL's passing rankings, that's what he usually does. He understands what coach John Fox wants out of the offense keep it on the ground, throw when you have to. Delhomme is 34 and probably doesn't have too many more years in him, and Panthers probably should be thinking about a quarterback for the future. But not yet.
Analysis: Delhomme has one of the best receivers in the NFL in Steve Smith, but he's still just a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB. He's worth a late-round pick as a backup option in deeper leagues.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme is counting on some other players to step up in the passing game this year besides veteran WR Steve Smith. One player Delhomme is hopeful of doing well is third-year WR Dwayne Jarrett. "We're waiting on Dwayne," Delhomme said. "He can help us. He can really and truly help us. I expect him to help us. ... This game is a learning process. I have high hopes. If I didn't have high hopes for him I wouldn't be kind of hard on him." Delhomme also has been impressed with rookie RB Mike Goodson, who can be used in the slot position. "He's got some jets, I know that," Delhomme said. "We're still in (shorts) right now. You always have those guys that look good, but this guy, he's got some explosiveness. In the little time we've been out here, (you can see that)."
Analysis: Delhomme could use some help beyond Smith. Veteran Muhsin Muhammad also remains, but he's past his prime at this point. Smith's play gives Delhomme more Fantasy value than he probably deserves, but he's still worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy QB during the year.
News: The Panthers gave QB Jake Delhomme a five-year, $42.5 million extension that keeps the 34-year-old under contract through the 2014 season. The deal includes $20 million in guaranteed money and clears much needed salary-cap space for Carolina. Delhomme was to count for more than $10 million under the cap next season in the final year of his deal. Delhomme's extension comes just over three months following his nightmare postseason performance. After a strong season following reconstructive elbow surgery the year before, Delhomme threw five interceptions and lost a fumble in Carolina's 33-13 loss to Arizona in the NFC divisional playoffs. "We all know last year was a good year that ended terribly," Delhomme said. "Nobody was more disappointed than I was for not putting my team in a position to win. That's something I've always tried to pride myself on. ... Why it happened I don't know. But it did and certainly things weren't good for a while."
Analysis: Delhomme has been taking part in Carolina's offseason conditioning program this month, while getting strong support from coach John Fox and general manager Marty Hurney, who have rebuffed suggestions they look for another QB. Delhomme's 2008 season will forever be remembered for his postseason blunder, but he should rebound to an extent. He completed 246-of-414 passes (59.4 pct.) for 3,288 yards (7.9 yards per attempt) with 15 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and three fumbles. Delhomme was able to post a career-best passing average thanks to an incredible running game that kept opposing defenses off balance, and that's something that should continue so long as the Panthers' offensive line stays in tact. Suffice to say, don't count on Delhomme to be any better than a No. 2 Fantasy QB worth a late-round pick, if at all, in drafts this summer.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme set a career-high for interceptions on Saturday in the Panthers' Divisional Playoff game against the Cardinals, getting picked off five times by five separate Panthers receivers. Delhomme also lost a fumble to his credit. For the game, Delhomme was 17-for-34 passing with one touchdown pass.
Analysis: Entering with a 5-2 postseason record, Delhomme's 95.0 playoff passer rating coming in was better than any other quarterback in this season's playoffs. This performance really came from out of the blue, especially after the Panthers marched down the field and scored on their opening drive. Next season, Delhomme is projected as a No. 2 option at quarterback, but a terrible performance like this could potentially have irreversible effects.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme helped the Panthers clinch a first-round bye with a 33-31 victory over the Saints Week 17. Delhomme threw for 250 yards on 14-for-20 passing on the day with a touchdown.
Analysis: Heading into the playoffs, Delhomme is a No. 1 option at QB with the Panthers on a bye to begin postseason play and will play in the Divisional Playoffs during the weekend of Jan. 10-11. Next season, he'll be a solid No. 2 starter at quarterback.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme completed 11-of-19 passes for 185 yards in Week 16 at the Giants. He did not throw an interception, but also did not throw a touchdown.
Analysis: Delhomme's longest pass was a 60-yard gain that put the ball inside the 5-yard line, but he did not have very many big plays against a tough Giants defense. Delhomme has not had multiple touchdown passes since October and is not playing at the level that a Fantasy owners would want for a QB in a Fantasy championship situation. However, the team's loss in New York makes their game in New Orleans significant because they have to win to clinch the division and a first-round bye. Delhomme threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns against the Saints in October and Fantasy owners should at least expect him to be in their for a full game in Week 17 while many other quarterbacks around the league will be limited or held out.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme has looked better in his past two road games at Atlanta and Green Bay in Weeks 12 and 13 with 472 passing yards, one touchdown and no interceptions and two rushing touchdowns, but he still only has three passing touchdowns and seven interceptions in six road games this year. And he's on the road at the Giants in Week 16.
Analysis: The Giants defense struggled in Week 15 at Dallas, but they will lock down Delhomme at home. Look for New York to pay extra attention to Steve Smith this week and make Delhomme look elsewhere in the passing game. If he can't get the ball to Smith on a regular basis then Delhomme won't post any quality stats in this matchup. Consider Delhomme a No. 2 Fantasy QB this week.
News: QB Jake Delhomme led his team to a 30-10 victory over the Broncos on Sunday in Week 16. Delhomme was 17-for-26 for 253 yards with a touchdown and an interception. It was the first time in three games that he had thrown for more than 200 yards. He has now thrown a TD pass in his last two games.
Analysis: The Panthers are clearly a running team now, but he and Smith really connected on Sunday and that's where most of his passes went. He's only a No. 2 QB option for next week at New York against the Giants in what should be a great game with serious playoff implications.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme threw for less than 200 yards for the fourth time in five games Week 14 against the Buccaneers, finishing at 173 on 14-of-20 passing. He threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Steve Smith in the third quarter, but he also threw two interceptions.
Analysis: Meanwhile, running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart combined for 301 yards rushing, which really tells the story about Delhomme's numbers in recent weeks. The Panthers simply have such a good running game that they don't need much of a passing game. Accordingly, you can't count on Delhomme for Fantasy-relevant numbers, not even in Week 15 against the Broncos.
News: In the Panthers' 35-31 win at the Packers in Week 13, QB Jake Delhomme was efficient but not overly strong statistically. He completed just 12-of-17 passes for 177 yards, but added a rush touchdown on a 1-yard bootleg. Delhomme's arm strength, which has been in question of late, didn't look too bad as he connected on two deep bombs to Steve Smith in the game and another to Muhsin Muhammad.
Analysis: Delhomme has seen the Panthers become a running team, and there was no doubt that they were just that against the Packers (DeAngelo Williams had the other four touchdowns for Carolina). With the Buccaneers coming to Carolina in Week 14, figure Delhomme to be no better than a No. 2 Fantasy QB for his next game. Surely, there are better Fantasy options available off your waiver wire.
News: Prior to last week's game at Atlanta when he passed for 295 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions, Panthers QB Jake Delhomme had been terrible on the road. For the season, Delhomme has three touchdowns and seven interceptions in five games away from home. The Packers, this week's opponent, despite getting run over by the Saints on Monday night, still have a very good pass defense and are No. 2 in the NFL with 17 interceptions.
Analysis: Delhomme has never played at Green Bay, and it could be a tough outing for him. He also got a cut on his elbow against the Falcons that required stitches. The Panthers will continue to rely on DeAngelo Williams this week, and Delhomme won't have two good games in a row on the road. Consider Delhomme a No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: The Charlotte Observer reports Panthers QB Jake Delhomme wore an elastic wrap on his right (throwing) arm while on the sideline late in Sunday's loss against the Falcons. But Delhomme, who had Tommy John elbow surgery last season, said the elbow was hit during the game but was fine. Delhomme, who had a total of 174 yards passing over his last two games, got back on track Week 12 at Atlanta. He finished 21-of-35 passing for 295 yards and a score, throwing a 16-yard touchdown pass to Muhsin Muhammad in the fourth quarter. He also ran 12 yards for a touchdown, finishing with two carries for 18 yards.
Analysis: Look for Delhomme to be OK for Week 13 at Green Bay, but it's a tough matchup for him so consider Delhomme a No. 2 Fantasy option at the Packers.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme, who had a total of 174 yards passing over his last two games, got back on track Week 12 at Atlanta. He finished 21-of-35 passing for 295 yards and a score, throwing a 16-yard touchdown pass to Muhsin Muhammad in the fourth quarter. He also ran 12 yards for a touchdown, finishing with two carries for 18 yards.
Analysis: Delhomme's two miserable games came against two crummy defenses, but he faced only a slightly better defense against the Falcons. Still, his performance will go a long way to redeeming his Fantasy appeal. You probably still don't want to trust him as a No. 1 Fantasy QB yet at Green Bay in Week 13, but keep an eye on how he performs.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme wasn't as bad as he was last week: 7-for-27 with four interceptions and a 12.3 passer rating against Oakland. But he threw for only 98 yards in Week 11's win over the Lions. Delhomme was 10-of-19 as he threw a touchdown pass to Jeff King in the 2nd quarter.
Analysis: That is two poor games in a row and two wins for Delhomme. He's got 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions on the season in 10 games and is only worth using in Fantasy in the deepest of leagues if you have an injury. That said, he's a proven winner. The Panthers play at Atlanta in Week 12.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme has played better at home than on the road, and Delhomme is at home against Detroit in Week 11. In five home games, Delhomme has passed for 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions compared to 752 yards, two touchdowns and seven interceptions in four games on the road.
Analysis: It also helps that he's facing Detroit, which has allowed 244.9 passing yards per game with 15 touchdowns and only two interceptions. Look for the Panthers passing game to rebound this week, which means Steve Smith will have more than one catch for 9 yards. Consider Delhomme a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Charlotte Observer reports Panthers coach John Fox remains confident in QB Jake Delhomme after he threw four interceptions, matching his career high, in Sunday's 17-6 win at Oakland. He was 7-of-27 passing and set career lows with 72 yards passing and a 12.3 rating. While acknowledging the Panthers didn't throw the ball well, Fox said "it wasn't just Jake" at his Monday news conference. Fox said there was nothing physically wrong with Delhomme during the game and that the lack of success through the air gives the Panthers something to work on for the weeks ahead. Carolina faces Detroit in Week 11.
Analysis: Facing the Lions will help Delhomme cure his woes. Look for him to have a great game and consider him a No. 1 Fantasy option this week against Detroit, which has one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL.
News: Even the worst game of Jake Delhomme's career proved to be enough to beat the lowly Oakland Raiders. Delhomme threw a touchdown pass on the opening drive before matching his career-worst performance with four interceptions and the Carolina Panthers kept Oakland out of the end zone in a 17-6 victory Sunday. After Johnnie Lee Higgins fumbled the opening kickoff for the Raiders at the 16, Delhomme converted on a 3-yard touchdown pass to Muhsin Muhammad. That was the lone highlight of the day for Delhomme, who finished 7-for-27 for 72 yards. The 26 percent completion rate was the worst in any of Delhomme's 74 starts and he threw four interceptions for just the third time in his career. Two of those picks came deep in Panthers territory in the third quarter, but the Raiders were unable to capitalize.
Analysis: Delhomme came into Sunday's game with four touchdowns and zero picks in his last two games against the Saints and Cardinals so we're not really sure why he played so poorly against Oakland. Considering the poor performance a fluke, the Panthers meet Detroit in Week 11 and they are just as bad defensively. Plus, Delhomme plays the Lions at home where he's much better than on the road. Delhomme remains a solid Fantasy option against the Lions in Week 11.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme was 20-of-28 passing for 248 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions Sunday against Arizona. He also had two carries for minus-2 yards and lost a fumble. Delhomme now has eight touchdowns in his past four games against Atlanta, Kansas City, New Orleans and the Cardinals.
Analysis: The Panthers are off in Week 9, but look for Delhomme to stay hot in Week 10 at Oakland when Carolina returns from its bye week.
News: Arizona is the poster child for West Coast teams coming to the East Coast for 1 p.m. starts. The Cardinals have done it twice this year, and both times their pass defense has faltered. Against Washington, Jason Campbell passed for 193 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Against the Jets the following week, Brett Favre passed for 289 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. This week, Panthers QB Jake Delhomme will try to stay hot at home. He is averaging 213 passing yards at home with six touchdowns and two interceptions in four games. All six touchdown passes have come in his past three home games against Atlanta, Kansas City and New Orleans, all wins, and he should play well again this week. The Cardinals are tied with Denver for the most passing touchdowns allowed with 12.
Analysis: Look for Delhomme to remain a solid Fantasy option, and he should be considered a No. 1 Fantasy option this week against Arizona.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme threw two touchdown passes for the third time in four games Week 7 against the Saints -- a 39-yarder to Steve Smith and a four-yarder to DeAngelo Williams. He finished 14-of-22 passing for 195 yards.
Analysis: Delhomme didn't have his best game yardage-wise, but his Fantasy owners won't even take notice as long as he gets the touchdown. He remains a better backup than starter in Fantasy, but you could live with him starting Week 8 against the Cardinals. He seems to have recovered nicely from Tommy John surgery.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme has thrown five touchdown passes and five interceptions in 2008 after missing the final 13 games last season with a shredded ligament in his right elbow. In his past two home games, Delhomme has averaged 265 passing yards with four touchdowns and one interception against Atlanta and Kansas City. He also has played well in his past two games against the Saints going back to 2006 since he missed both meetings last year. Delhomme has four touchdowns and no interceptions in those two games and New Orleans has allowed seven passing touchdowns this year. Steve Smith has five touchdowns in his past five games against the Saints.
Analysis: Consider Delhomme a No. 1 Fantasy option this week against New Orleans. He's a solid start against his former team.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme was intercepted three times in Week 6 at Tampa Bay. He did not throw a touchdown. Delhomme completed 20 of 39 passes for 242 yards.
Analysis: Delhomme came into the game with just two interceptions to go with five touchdown passes. He left with five and five. The Tampa Two was just too tough for Delhomme to decipher in Week 7 and he was only able to pick up yards on slants and drag routes underneath to Steve Smith and Mushin Muhammad. Smith did have a chance to split the two safeties in garbage time late in the game for what would have been a sure touchdown, but he dropped the pass. Chalk this one up as a rough outing against a good pass defense for Jake, who remains a No. 2 option or decent bye-week replacement option for Week 7 vs. New Orleans at home.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme, who takes on the Buccaneers in Week 6, is 7-1 vs. Tampa Bay in his career, completing 138 of 221 (62.4 pct.) for 1,748 yards with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Bucs rank 21st against the pass. Delhomme could also have two of his three injured offensive linemen back for Sunday's game as left tackle Jordan Gross and right tackle Jeff Otah practiced for a second straight day Friday. Both are questionable for the game.
Analysis: Those of you who took a flier on Delhomme in drafts coming into the season have been richly rewarded so far in 2008. He has proven to be a more-than-capable backup Fantasy option, and might even be worth starting in deeper leagues when a favorable matchup presents itself. Consider him a No. 2 option or decent bye-week replacement option for this game, however.

News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme didn't need to finish off Week 5's 34-0 rout of the Chiefs as he gave way to Josh McCown late in the fourth quarter. Delhomme did manage to lead the Panthers on six scoring drives and threw a pair of touchdowns as well. He might have had a third touchdown pass had he not thrown an interception in the end zone. Delhomme, who came into the game as probable with a thigh injury, completed 14 of 22 passes for 236 yards. His first passing touchdown was on a 25-yard catch-and-run by DeAngelo Williams in the second quarter and his second was on a 47-yard strike to Muhsin Muhammad in the third.
Analysis: Delhomme now has four passing touchdowns in his last two games and just two interceptions in five games. He is definitely starting to get more comfortable passing now that Steve Smith is back in full swing after missing the first two games because of a suspension. Delhomme won't wow you with his numbers and remains more of a No. 2 Fantasy QB Week 6 against the Bucs.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme (thigh) is active and starting Week 5 against the Chiefs. He was listed as probable on the injury report and went through full practices all week.
Analysis: Delhomme hasn't missed a game this season and is the reigning NFC Player of the Week after going 20-for-29 for 294 yards and two touchdowns in a win over the Falcons. The Chiefs are coming off a big win against the Broncos, but Jay Cutler still shred them for 300-plus yards. Delhomme should be starting in all leagues as a No. 1 Fantasy QB option.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme (thigh) is listed as probable for Week 5 vs. Kansas City. Delhomme went through full practices all week.

News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme practiced in full on Wednesday and is probable for Week 5 against the Chiefs.
Analysis: Delhomme hasn't missed a game this season and is the reigning NFC Player of the Week after going 20-for-29 for 294 yards and two touchdowns in a win over the Falcons. He'll be listed on the injury report, but he's playing in Week 5. Delhomme should be starting in all leagues as a No. 1 Fantasy QB option.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme completed 20-of-29 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns in a Week 4 victory over the Falcons.
Analysis: Delhomme has two of his favorite all-time players to throw to the ball to and he thrived against an average Falcons team on Sunday by using those two guys for 243 of his 294 yards. The Panthers host the Chiefs in Week 5, and you wouldn't be wrong if you used Delhomme as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy QB for that matchup.
News: In his past five games vs. Atlanta, QB Jake Delhomme has completed 86-of-139 (61.9 pct.) passes for 962 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. Carolina hosts Atlanta in Week 4.
Analysis: Delhomme injured himself against the Panthers last season, but did complete 10-of-18 passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns before leaving the game with an elbow injury that cost him the rest of the season. With an extra week to work with No. 1 WR Steve Smith, this could be the game Delhomme really breaks out. Consider him a nice low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 Fantasy QB, depending on the size of your league.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme was 17-of-29 passing for 191 yards Sunday at Minnesota with no touchdowns or interceptions. He did have one carry for no yards and lost two fumbles.
Analysis: Delhomme should rebound in Week 4 against Atlanta. Delhomme should have played better against the Vikings with Steve Smith back from his suspension. Go into Week 4 with Delhomme as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option depending on your other QB. With Smith back, it's only a matter of time before Delhomme gets going.
News: His right elbow constantly ached. His supporting cast was struggling. The mistakes, interceptions and losses mounted. Midway through the 2006 season, something Jake Delhomme thought would never happen did: football was no longer fun. "It became more of a grind with me," Carolina's quarterback said. "You can't play good football when you're like that." Three games into the 2007 season, Delhomme's troublesome elbow finally gave out. He spent the rest of the season watching helplessly as the Panthers limped to a second straight non-playoff season. As Delhomme began the long rehabilitation from ligament-replacement surgery last winter, the Panthers heeded his call to get more playmakers, signing two receivers, including his old buddy, Muhsin Muhammad. Armed with his new weapons and an improved running game, a pain-free Delhomme has engineered two fourth-quarter comebacks to start the season despite being without his top target, the suspended Steve Smith. Football is enjoyable again. "There's nothing like walking into the locker room the last two weeks, before anybody gets to come in, when it's just the players and the coaches," Delhomme said. "There's just something about it, just that sense of accomplishment, whereas a couple of years ago it was more a sense of relief."
Analysis: Delhomme's signature enthusiasm -- and gunslinger personality -- has been on display in thrilling wins over San Diego and Chicago. Overall, Delhomme has thrown for an unspectacular 375 yards with a passer rating of 73.0. He will look to notch another win Week 3 against the Vikings. It's been two years since Jake Delhomme last faced the Vikings, but we do have a two-game sample size over the last three years to look at. In their 2005 meeting, Delhomme completed 21-of-30 (70 pct.) for 341 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. However, in 2006, Delhomme completed only 17-of-33 passes for 181 with no touchdowns or interceptions. Delhomme gets his favorite receiver, Smith, back in Week 3 against the Vikings and you have to think his numbers will receive a nice boost as a result. Consider him a low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 Fantasy QB in Week 3, depending on the size of your league.

News: The Panthers won in spite of Jake Delhomme in Week 2 vs. Chicago. He started the game with a thud, completing 4-of-9 passes for 24 yards in the first half, then rebounded a little to end the game with 128 yards on 12-of-21 passing with an interception that went off the hands of his intended receiver.
Analysis: Delhomme's stats should perk up in Week 3 when he gets WR Steve Smith back from a team-mandated two-game suspension. He'll need him against the Vikings in Week 3 in Minnesota. Consider Delhomme no more than a No. 2 QB for that game.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme completed 24 of 33 passes (72.7 pct.) for 319 yards with three touchdowns and one interception the last time Carolina played Chicago in the 2005-06 playoffs. In Week 2, the Panthers will host the Bears.
Analysis: Many Fantasy owners were worried about Delhomme and his surgically repaired elbow this season, but he looked good in Week 1 and will get No. 1 WR Steve Smith back in Week 3. He remains a No. 2 Fantasy QB for now, but definitely one worth keeping an eye on.
News:Jake Delhomme came back with a jolt that the San Diego Chargers won't soon forget. Delhomme threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dante Rosario as time expired to lift the Carolina Panthers to a shocking 26-24 win over the Chargers on Sunday. After Philip Rivers rallied San Diego with his third TD pass of the game, Delhomme moved the Panthers to the San Diego 14-yard line with two seconds left before calling his final timeout. Delhomme dropped back on fourth down, scrambled and then found Rosario in the back of the end zone to give Carolina a 25-24 lead. Carolina coach John Fox raised his arms and clenched his fists as the offensive players mobbed each other between the goal posts and the stands.
Analysis: Delhomme returned after missing all but three games last season with an elbow injury that required reconstructive surgery. He was 8-of-11 for 68 yards on the final drive and finished the afternoon 23-of-41 for 247 yards. He looked as sharp as when he threw for 20-plus touchdowns in 2004 and 2005. He will soon get Steve Smith back in Week 3 after he is done serving a two-game suspension and who knows what kind of numbers Delhomme might post then? Delhomme is without Smith for Week 2 against the Bears, so consider similiar numbers to Week 1. He still remains more of a No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: In his last meeting with the Chargers back in 2005, Panthers QB Jake Delhomme completed 17-of-36 passes for 155 yards and an interception. The veteran will try for revenge in Week 1 at San Diego.
Analysis: In four starts before getting hurt last year, Delhomme completed 78 of 113 passes (69.0 pct.) for 831 yards with 10 touchdowns, one interception and a 116.1 passer rating. Fantasy owners who waited for Delhomme later in their drafts as a No. 2 QB will be hoping he can keep up that kind of production this season. You might want to wait until Steve Smith is back from suspension before you start him in leagues that require two QBs, however.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme, in his longest stint since reconstructive elbow surgery last year, was 11 of 19 for 159 yards Saturday against the Redskins. He overcame an early interception with a 24-yard touchdown throw to tight end Dante Rosario to give Carolina (2-1) a 34-0 halftime lead. When he found Steve Smith for a 33-yard TD on the first possession of the second half, the Redskins' starters were watching, and perhaps worrying, from the sideline.
Analysis: Delhomme was impressive on Saturday but the Redskins defense was putrid. Who knows if that was Delhomme's doing or the fact that without Jason Taylor the team crumbled. Still, the fact that he was able to play as long as he did was the best news the team could have received. Figure Delhomme to be a top-end No. 2 Fantasy QB worth a late-round pick in drafts.
News: Because he didn't get a lot of snaps to work with for the second game in a row thanks to a big special-teams touchdown, Panthers QB Jake Delhomme attempted just 14 passes in one half of play at Philadelphia, completing nine for 54 yards with an interception. Delhomme worked this game without WRs Steve Smith, D.J. Hackett and Dwayne Jarrett and also had a touchdown catch by Muhsin Muhammad overruled on a challenge. His arm, which underwent Tommy John surgery late last year, seems to be fine.
Analysis: Delhomme has attempted just 15 passes this preseason, but that has no bearing on what to expect from him and the Panthers' offense this season. Let this game be an example of what to expect in a half without Steve Smith at his disposal. Figure Delhomme to be a top-end No. 2 Fantasy QB worth a late-round pick in drafts.
News: We didn't expect Carolina QB Jake Delhomme to play long in Saturday's preseason game against the Colts, but this was real short. Delhomme threw one pass -- 0-for-1 -- and his day was done.
Analysis: Despite the light work, Delhomme should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy option in 2008. If he's healthy and ready to go, he is a decent sleeper in most Fantasy leagues and worth a late-round pick.
News: Less than a year after he felt his elbow pop after completing a short pass, a pain-free Jake Delhomme and his new elbow return to the field for Saturday's preseason opener against Indianapolis. "I have no apprehension at all," insisted Delhomme, who underwent months of grueling rehabilitation following ligament-replacement surgery. "I don't know if I'm being naive, but I don't feel that way." The carefree attitude stems from the smooth recovery after doctors removed the shredded ligament in the elbow of his throwing arm and replaced it with a tendon from his left thigh. Known as Tommy John surgery, the procedure is more commonly performed on baseball pitchers.
Analysis: Delhomme likely won't play more than a series or two Saturday against the Colts. Still, it will be a good sign to get him back on the field. He should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy option in 2008. If he's healthy and ready to go, he is a decent sleeper in most Fantasy leagues and worth a late-round pick.
News: QB Jake Delhomme's recovery from ligament-replacement surgery in his right elbow is one of the keys to the Panthers' season. Delhomme's arm has looked strong so far in training camp, and he's clearly comfortable with the 6-foot-2 Musin Muhammad opposite the 5-9, speedy Steve Smith.
Analysis: It appears Delhomme is on schedule to start the season, but he should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy option in 2008. If he's healthy and ready to go, he is a decent sleeper in most Fantasy leagues because he plays behind a solid offensive line and has good receivers in Smith, Muhammad and D.J. Hackett.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme had Tommy John surgery on his throwing arm in October and missed most of the 2007 season. But Delhomme practiced with the first-team offense during OTAs and said the arm feels as strong as ever. It likely won't be until Delhomme plays in an actual game with defenders slapping and tugging at his arm that he knows how sound it actually is. And for now, the Charlotte Observer reports, Delhomme will be limited in training camp. "Will I have a pitch count in camp? I'm sure I will, because it will be the smart thing to do," Delhomme said.

If he's healthy and ready to go, he is a decent sleeper in most Fantasy leagues because he plays behind a solid offensive line and has good receivers in Steve Smith, Muhsin Muhammad and D.J. Hackett.
News: Outspoken Panthers WR Steve Smith had no problem gushing about the progress made thus far by his quarterback, Jake Delhomme. Smith is also excited with the direction the Panthers' offense is going in. "It's very exciting," said Smith. "It'll add a little extra to it as obviously Jake is coming in, feeling good and looking great. It seems like he has a stronger arm and he's not showing any weakness as far as with that major surgery."
Analysis: Delhomme has been throwing, albeit on a limited basis so far this spring, but he's expected to be ready for the start of training camp and participate in preseason games. We were reminded quickly just how vital Delhomme was to the Panthers' success. With him, they were a powerful offense capable of posting plenty of points. Without him, they were a disaster. No one knew this fact more than Steve Smith, who scored four of his seven touchdowns with Delhomme under center. He'll be entering his 10th NFL season, although just his sixth as a regular starting QB. Delhomme has been beaten up over the last two years, but expect him to play healthy behind a good offensive line in 2008, making him quite a sleeper as a top-end No. 2 Fantasy QB worth a middle- to late-round pick in drafts. If that arm comes around, watch out!
News: Eight months after Panthers QB Jake Delhomme grabbed his right elbow in agony, he began team drills in Wednesday's optional workout by hunching over center Ryan Kalil. Delhomme threw about 34 passes per day during April's minicamp, but they were during individual drills. On Wednesday morning, Delhomme ran some plays with the first-team offense to kick off three weeks of no-contact workouts. He downplayed the significance of throwing about 40 passes in his latest rehabilitation milestone following ligament-replacement surgery. Now Delhomme is fit and pain-free with an arm that he says is as strong as ever. "I think a lot had to do with my rehab routine," Delhomme said. "I have become more specialized, I guess you can say in my lifts. So that has strengthened up everything in the arm, the fingers and the shoulder. But I do feel real good. Now it's easy to come on a one-a-day and do it. When you get back to back in training camp ... but I anticipate not really having too many issues."
Analysis: Delhomme is still expected to be ready for the start of the 2008 season. We were reminded quickly just how vital Delhomme was to the Panthers' success. With him, they were a powerful offense capable of posting plenty of points. Without him, they were a disaster. No one knew this fact more than Steve Smith, who scored four of his seven touchdowns with Delhomme under center. News: The Panthers begin offseason workouts in two weeks, giving them an opportunity to get another look at Jake Delhomme's recovery from ligament-replacement surgery in his right elbow. Delhomme threw some at a minicamp earlier this month, and coach John Fox raved about his progress Wednesday. "Jake looks outstanding," Fox said. "He looks fit. He's bigger, stronger. His arm looks fantastic, maybe stronger than ever."
Analysis: Keep an eye on what happens with Delhomme in training camp and the rest of this offseason. If healthy, Delhomme could be a nice sleeper in Fantasy leagues in 2008. He will be drafted late as a backup, but don't be suprised if Delhomme is starting by the end of the season for most owners.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme threw in individual drills during the team's three-day minicamp but sat out team work as he recovers from elbow surgery. He is still expected to be ready for the start of the 2008 season.

No one knew this fact more than Steve Smith, who scored four of his seven touchdowns with Delhomme under center. He'll be entering his 10th NFL season, but just his sixth as a starting QB (technically his fifth; he was the Panthers backup QB for half a game in 2003). Delhomme has been beaten up over the last two years, but expect him to play healthy behind a good offensive line in 2008, making him quite a sleeper as a top-end No. 2 Fantasy QB worth a middle- to late-round pick in drafts. If that arm comes around, watch out!
News: The Gaston Gazette reports that Panthers QB Jake Delhomme will accelerate his rehab process and work with a regulation football with the team's trainer on Monday. Delhomme had been previously throwing a Nerf football and not been throwing with intensity. Delhomme suffered a torn ligament in his throwing elbow early on in 2007 and had Tommy John surgery, a procedure Delhomme had six months ago.

News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme is throwing a kid's ball about 20 10-yard throws four days a week. Nearly four months after ligament-replacement surgery on his right elbow, Delhomme is still far away from slinging a real ball. Yet Delhomme couldn't be happier. For the first time in almost three years, he is pain-free. Delhomme is trying to become the highest-profile quarterback to return from what is often called Tommy John surgery. Delhomme had a tendon from his left thigh moved to his elbow to replace a failed ligament. Delhomme also had a painful bone spur removed and a torn muscle repaired in his elbow during the surgery Oct. 18. For three months, Delhomme couldn't do anything but watch the Panthers finish a miserable season without him. About three weeks ago he started some weightlifting with dumbbells. Then last week he got to throw a lightweight ball while on a "pitch count" monitored by trainer Ryan Vermillion.
Analysis: Delhomme's value to the Panthers couldn't be higher after the disaster that followed his injury. Backup David Carr was ineffective. Carolina then turned to 44-year-old Vinny Testaverde before settling on undrafted rookie Matt Moore. The three QBs combined for nine touchdown passes, one more than Delhomme had in 2.5 games. Delhomme hopes to start throwing a real football in a couple of months. He insists he's in no rush. Keep an eye on what develops with Delhomme heading into training camp. When healthy, he's a No. 2 Fantasy option heading into 2008 with the chance to see his value rise if he comes back at 100 percent.
News: A player that we appeared to miss on at the onset of the '07 season was Jake Delhomme, who came out of the gate on fire. Through 11 quarters of football, Delhomme completed 55-of-86 passes (a career-best 64 completion pct.) for 624 yards with eight touchdowns and one interception. Then in the third quarter of the Panthers' Week 3 game at Atlanta, Delhomme was sacked by Falcons DE John Abraham and landed on his throwing elbow. The team tried to ease him back into practice, but the final prognosis was a torn ligament, which ended his season officially in early October.
Analysis: We were reminded quickly just how vital Delhomme was to the Panthers' success. With him, they were a powerful offense capable of posting plenty of points. Without him, they were a disaster. No one knew this fact more than Steve Smith, who scored four of his seven touchdowns with Delhomme under center. Delhomme told the Charlotte Observer this offseason that rehab on his elbow was going well and that he expects to be at 100 percent for training camp.
News: Carolina Panthers QB Jake Delhomme underwent ligament-replacement surgery on his right elbow Thursday. Delhomme decided last week to have the season-ending procedure, which calls for replacing the damaged ligament with a tendon from another part of the body. The 90-minute surgery was performed by team physician Dr. Pat Connor at Carolinas Medical Center. "The surgery went well," Connor said in a statement. "His postoperative rehabilitation will start soon and he has an excellent prognosis."
Analysis: Delhomme's rehabilitation is expected to take seven to nine months. Delhomme has said he's confident he'll be ready for the start of training camp in July. He should be dropped in all leagues except keeper formats and should be OK for 2008.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme will miss the rest of the season after deciding to undergo surgery on his right elbow. Coach John Fox said Delhomme, who was injured two weeks ago, had trouble throwing the ball early Monday, a day after he briefly threw on the side while sitting out Carolina's win over New Orleans. "I think (Sunday) he was just trying to see how it felt," Fox said. "Today he really pushed it and experienced some of the same discomfort he had during the Atlanta game." Delhomme then made the decision to have surgery next week. He's expected to recover in time for the start of next season. "Anytime you lose your starting quarterback it's a blow," Fox said. "Jake was playing very well. I think that's pretty well documented. He's not only our starting quarterback, but what he brings to our football team will be missed."
Analysis: Delhomme had a good season, albeit brief, in his three starts before getting hurt. It's safe to release him now and hope he can return in 2008 at 100 percent.
News: The Panthers have listed QB Jake Delhomme as inactive for Week 5 at the Saints, meaning he'll miss his second straight game with a strained right elbow. David Carr will start in his place.
Analysis: We expected this for Delhomme, and we'll continue to expect until we hear news of progress. The injury has led to rumors of surgery, so hopefully you've found a long-term replacement for Delhomme in case he doesn't return at all. The Panthers visit the Cardinals in Week 6.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme did not practice again Friday and is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against New Orleans. Delhomme hasn't thrown a football since straining his right elbow Sept. 23 against Atlanta. Last week against Tampa Bay, he was the No. 3 quarterback behind starter David Carr and backup Matt Moore.
Analysis: Keep Delhomme reserved for Week 5 against New Orleans. It appears he will again be on the bench for the Panthers, and he should remain on the bench for your Fantasy team.
News: David Carr appears likely to make his second straight start at quarterback for the Carolina Panthers after Jake Delhomme missed practice again Thursday. While coach John Fox would not identify a starter for Sunday's game at New Orleans, Delhomme hasn't thrown a football since straining his right elbow on Sept. 23 against Atlanta. Carr completed 19 of 41 passes for 155 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Carolina's 20-7 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday.
Analysis: Delhomme hasn't ruled himself out of Sunday's game at New Orleans, but it appears unlikely he'll play. The Panthers have a bye the following week, and Delhomme would like to know by then if he's progressing or if surgery is necessary. Continue to monitor his status and hope he can return soon, but we don't think it looks too good.
News: Quarterback Jake Delhomme was held out of practice Wednesday as the Panthers began preparations for Sunday's game at New Orleans. Delhomme hasn't thrown since straining his right elbow against Atlanta on Sept. 23. He said he might do some throwing in practice this week, but said the decision is up to the trainers. Delhomme, 2-1 as a starter and off to the best statistical start of his career, is hoping his elbow heals through rehab. If it doesn't, Delhomme could have season-ending surgery. David Carr is expected to start for the Panthers in Week 5.
Analysis: Delhomme wouldn't rule himself out of Sunday's game at New Orleans, but it appears unlikely he'll play. The Panthers have a bye the following week, and Delhomme would like to know by then if he's progressing or if surgery is necessary. Continue to monitor his status and hope he can return soon, but we don't think it looks too good.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme hopes a rigorous rehabilitation program will allow him to avoid season ending surgery on his strained right elbow. A week after it was announced Delhomme would not need surgery, Delhomme acknowledged an operation is possible. Delhomme was injured when he was sacked by Atlanta's John Abraham. He sat out Sunday's 20-7 loss to Tampa Bay, when backup David Carr and the Panthers didn't cross the Buccaneers 45-yard line until late in the fourth quarter. Coach John Fox said last week an MRI showed no structural damage and indicated surgery was not needed. But on Monday he indicated he meant to say surgery wasn't immediately necessary. Later, he said doctors brought up surgery as a possibility after Delhomme had more tests late last week.
Analysis: Delhomme said he's yet to try to throw a football since he was injured, although he may try to throw this week. He wouldn't rule himself out of Sunday's game at New Orleans, but it appears unlikely he'll play. The Panthers have a bye the following week, and Delhomme would like to know by then if he's progressing or if surgery is necessary. Continue to monitor his status and hope he can return soon, but we don't think it looks too good.
News: According to the Charlotte Observer, Panthers QB Jake Delhomme, who did not play Sunday with what has been described as a sprained elbow, does not need surgery despite a published report. "There's no surgery scheduled or planned at this time," Carolina general manager Marty Hurney said. "From the very beginning we've said that. We're re-evaluating this on a day-to-day basis while Jake is going through the rehab process. Rehab is the first option, how the body part feels through the process determines what goes on from day-to-day." Delhomme dressed for the game and was designated as the team's third quarterback. A tell-tale sign that the Panthers aren't expecting surgery anytime soon was that they didn't sign a veteran quarterback to the roster last week.
Analysis: It appears Delhomme will be fine, but it's not sure when. Continue to monitor his status and hope he can return soon. The Panthers play at New Orleans in Week 5.
News: As previously reported, Panthers QB Jake Delhomme (elbow) was inactive for Week 4 vs. Tampa Bay. He was named the team's emergency QB. David Carr started in his place.
Analysis: Delhomme will likely be on the injury report again in Week 5 prior to the game at New Orleans. He'll have a better chance at playing in that game, but has to be reserved in all leagues until further notice. Start Carr as an injury replacement if he's available.
News: The Rock Hill Herald is among those who report that Panthers QB Jake Delhomme (elbow) will not play vs. Tampa Bay in Week 4. Furthermore, according to one of the paper's sources, his elbow injury might require surgery if the Panthers rush him back too quickly. David Carr will start in Delhomme's absence.
Analysis: Delhomme's Fantasy owners should sit their star QB and look for the Panthers to take it slowly with him. As for Carr, he's a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB option this week. The Panthers host the Bucs in Week 4.
News: The Charlotte Observer reports that Panthers QB Jake Delhomme is still hoping to start in Week 4 vs. Tampa Bay. He is listed as doubtful and has not practiced all week. "I'm still holding out hope," he said. "When a couple of years ago or whenever I broke my thumb, I didn't take a snap until Saturday morning. So we'll see. I am feeling better; I'm gripping the ball, it feels pretty good. So we'll see from there."
Analysis: We seriously doubt Delhomme will be able to give it a go in Week 4, but you never know. You'll likely have to monitor this situation up until the inactives are announced on Sunday. David Carr is the likely start for Carolina this week and is worth a look as an injury or bye-week replacement.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme walked off the field Friday after missing his third straight day of practice with a strained right elbow, stopped in front of a group of reporters, and answered the question before it was asked. "I don't know," Delhomme said of whether he'll play Sunday against Tampa Bay. "I'm holding out hope. A couple of years ago I broke my thumb and I didn't take a snap until Saturday morning. I'm feeling better. I'm gripping the ball and it feels pretty good. We're just trying to rest it right now." Delhomme, who said he hasn't tried to throw since being injured in the third quarter of Carolina's win Sunday over Atlanta, was listed as doubtful on the team's injury report Friday. But coach John Fox wouldn't name backup David Carr the starter, and Delhomme said he may wait until game time to decide.
Analysis: Delhomme is off to a good start this season. He's completed 64 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and just one interception. His passer rating of 111.9 is tied for third in the NFL. This injury is bad news for Fantasy owners. Continue to monitor Delhomme's progress and hope he can go, but he will likely be a reserve in Week 4. Carr is a decent replacement, but there should be other options with better matchups available to those who would be without Delhomme.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme missed practice again Thursday with a strained right elbow, making it more likely backup David Carr will start for Carolina on Sunday against Tampa Bay. Panthers coach John Fox, always secretive with injuries, sidestepped a question on whether Delhomme tried to throw. "He did not participate (in practice)," Fox said. "That's all of I've got to say and that's all I'm going to say. You know that." Carr, signed by Carolina in the offseason after being a five-year starter in Houston, led Carolina on two scoring drives in relief against Atlanta after Delhomme left the game late in the third quarter.
Analysis: Delhomme has thrown eight touchdown passes and just one interception, and his passer rating of 111.9 was tied for third in the NFL through Sunday's games. This injury is bad news for Fantasy owners. Continue to monitor Delhomme's progress and hope he can go, but he will likely be a reserve in Week 4. Carr is a decent replacement, but there should be other options with better matchups available to those who would be without Delhomme.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme's strained right elbow forced him to miss practice Wednesday, leaving his status uncertain for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. An MRI on Monday showed no structural damage to Delhomme's elbow, but he did not dress for practice Wednesday and left during the workout to get treatment. Coach John Fox would not provide any further information. In his last seven meetings with the Bucs, Delhomme has thrown for as little as 213 yards and as many as 277 yards. In that span, he's thrown at least one touchdown in each game with four multi-TD games, including two in his last meeting against them in Charlotte. But before we assume more of the same is in store, note that the Bucs pass defense ranks ninth in the NFL and has allowed two passing TDs in three games, including none last week against the Rams.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme will not need surgery on his injured right elbow and will be day to day leading up to Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. Delhomme was injured late in the third quarter of Carolina's 27-20 win over Atlanta on Sunday when he was sacked by John Abraham. Coach John Fox said Delhomme underwent an MRI on Monday which revealed no serious damage. Fox wouldn't say if he expects David Carr, signed in the offseason after being a five-year starter in Houston, to take the majority of snaps in practice this week. "What the doctors are telling me, it's a strained elbow," Fox said. "There are days until we play this week, so I can't rule anything, other than day to day." The Charlotte Observer speculated Monday that David Carr likely will make his first start for Carolina vs. the Bucs.
News: QB Jake Delhomme left the Panthers Week 3 contest at Atlanta with a right (throwing) elbow injury and did not return. David Carr replaced him. Delhomme finished 10-for-18 passing for 109 yards and two touchdowns.
Analysis: With eight touchdown passes and only one interception through three weeks this season, the loss of Delhomme would certainly have a Fantasy impact. Most likely, Delhomme's Fantasy owners didn't draft him as their No. 1 QB, so they have someone who can fill in for him if necessary. Monitor Delhomme's status in the coming days to see if he can go Week 4 against the Buccaneers.
News: Jake Delhomme continues to be one of the hottest Fantasy QBs available, and that will continue so long as Steve Smith, his partner in crime, stays healthy. The last time both of these guys were on the field against the Falcons, Delhomme threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns (Smith had 131 yards and a score). Delhomme also had a pair of 300-yard games against the Falcons in 2004, but that was when he had Muhsin Muhammad to throw to. Smith is healthy, as is Delhomme, for their Week 3 game at Atlanta.
Analysis: We have Delhomme ranked as out sixth-best QB for Week 3 and there's no reason why he shouldn't be able to continue his stellar play against the Falcons.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme was 27-of-41 passing for 307 yards, three touchdowns and one interception Sunday against Houston. He also had one carry for 13 yards.
Analysis: Delhomme now has six touchdown passes in two weeks, with four going to Steve Smith. He should be considered a No. 1 QB in Week 3 against Atlanta.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme threw three touchdown passes last week against St. Louis, and he has a good history against the AFC. In his past five games against the AFC, Delhomme has seven touchdown passes.
Analysis: With Steve Smith as his No. 1 WR, Delhomme always has a chance to have a big game every week. After Drew Carter's breakthrough performance last week, it looks like Delhomme has another reliable target, and that could mean trouble for opposing defenses. He should have a solid performance in Week 2 vs. Houston.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme completed 18-of-27 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns at St. Louis in Week 1, two to Drew Carter including one on an improvised play, and the other was a 68-yard dart to Steve Smith. He also scrambled for 11 yards.
Analysis: Delhomme surprised in his 2007 debut, but is he doesn't have Steve Smith working for him, his stats won't be as pretty. Still, expect moderate success next week when he plays vs. Houston in Week 2.
News: When asked if he'll be ready for Sunday's game at the Rams, Panthers QB Jake Delhomme replied, "Oh there's no doubt," reports The Sports Xchange. Prior to Wednesday, Delhomme hadn't practiced in 10 days due to soreness in his side. "It was good to be back out there," he said. "I don't think there's any doubt, it's time for the regular season. Training camp is over and preseason is over and now there's a target. There's a first game."
Analysis: The incumbent Delhomme has effectively held off newcomer David Carr as the Panthers' starting quarterback this preseason. Still, he, like the rest of the Panthers, performed below expectations in 2006. Delhomme enters 2007 as a No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme completed 11-of-18 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown during Friday's preseason game against the Patriots. Delhomme hooked up with Keary Colbert for a 48-yard touchdown strike in the second quarter.
Analysis: Delhomme has passed for more than 100 yards in the last two preseason games and looks ready for the season. It appears Delhomme's job is safe for now from backup QB David Carr, but he is looking like a No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: Jake Delhomme called last season's game in Philadelphia the low point of his career. Things didn't get much better in his return visit. Friday's dismal showing by the Carolina Panthers in their second preseason game brought back ugly memories of 2006 -- and raised questions if their impressive performance a week earlier was a fluke. In the 27-10 preseason loss to the Eagles, Delhomme made numerous mistakes, the Panthers couldn't run the ball, the offensive line was porous, the secondary struggled and there was little pass rush. "It was very disappointing, and you don't want to say, 'Oh, it was just preseason,"' Delhomme said. "We played awful."
Analysis: Delhomme, given little time to throw behind a new offensive line combination, failed to complete seven of his first 10 passes, was sacked three times, lost a fumble and threw an interception that Lito Sheppard returned 40 yards for a touchdown. While Delhomme's job could be in jeopardy if he continues to struggle, backup David Carr was also less than spectacular. He completed 7 of 13 passes for 111 yards in the second half and the Panthers didn't get into the end zone until midway through the fourth quarter. It appears Delhomme's job is safe for now, but is looking like a No. 2 Fantasy QB at this time.
News: With or without Michael Strahan, the New York Giants defense has a lot of work to do after being exposed by the Carolina Panthers. Jake Delhomme and Steve Smith combined for an opening-drive touchdown pass and receiver Taye Biddle caught scoring passes of 23 and 85 yards to lead the Panthers to a 24-21 victory on Saturday night in the matchup of teams looking to rebound from .500 seasons. For the Panthers, the game was a positive. Their offense played well for new coordinator Jeff Davidson, and the first-team defense look good in limited action. "Things were smooth and quick," said Delhomme, who went 5-for-8 for 30 yards. "We didn't waste any time. We did a lot of things at the line of scrimmage."
Analysis: Delhomme had the right start to the preseason as he tries and holds off David Carr for the starting QB job. It appears Delhomme's job is safe, but Delhomme is looking like a No. 2 Fantasy QB at this time.
News: A month after he was released by the Houston Texans, David Carr agreed Friday to a two-year deal to play for the Carolina Panthers. Carr, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 draft, will serve as Jake Delhomme's backup. "It's a case where we were obviously looking for someone to come in back up Jake and the opportunity to get a quarterback the caliber of David in free agency is unique," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. "We thought it was a good situation and a good opportunity for us."
Analysis: The Panthers were looking for an experienced quarterback to back up Delhomme after releasing Chris Weinke last month. "We made it clear and he knows that Jake Delhomme is our starting quarterback," Hurney said. "I think it was important for him to come to a winning organization and a place where he thinks has a chance to win. He knows that Jake is our starter. Every player wants to play, but he knows the role he's coming into." It appears Delhomme's job is safe, so consider him a low-end No. 1 option next year.
News: Defensive end Mike Rucker will return to the Panthers next season after agreeing to a restructured contract Thursday. It was one in a series of moves for the Panthers, who also restructured quarterback Jake Delhomme's contract and released veteran special teams player Karl Hankton. Rucker, who turned 32 on Wednesday, is recovering from surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He was due a $2.5 million roster bonus Thursday under the terms of his old contract. He has said his rehabilitation following surgery in January is ahead of schedule. The Panthers saved more money by releasing Hankton, who spent seven seasons with Carolina, the last five as special teams captain. The Panthers offered contracts to restricted free agent receiver Drew Carter, tight end Michael Gaines and defensive tackle Jordan Carstens. The moves mean the Panthers can match any contract offers they receive from other teams. If they don't match the offer, the Panthers will receive draft picks as compensation. Brett Basanez, who served as the No. 3 quarterback last season, agreed to a one-year deal.
Analysis: That's a lot of news. Delhomme and Rucker stay where they are in Fantasy circles (Delhomme as a No. 2 QB, Rucker as a reserve DL coming off an injury). Otherwise, only Drew Carter receives minimal consideration since he has some potential to be a nice bye-week fill-in at wideout.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme finished off the season with a 23-of-27 effort passing for 207 yards and two touchdowns -- both to Steve Smith.
Analysis: Delhomme should be Carolina's starter in 2007. With that assumption, consider him a top-end No. 2 Fantasy quarterback for next year's Fantasy play.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme practiced again Friday, all but assuring he'll start in the Panthers' final regular season game against New Orleans. Wearing a glove to protect his injured right thumb, Delhomme went through a full workout without difficulty at the team's practice facility. Delhomme suffered ligament damage when he banged his thumb against a Philadelphia player's helmet while throwing a touchdown pass in a loss to the Eagles on Dec. 4. Delhomme missed three games before returning to practice Wednesday. Delhomme was upgraded from questionable to probable on the injury report after practice Thursday. The Panthers are hopeful he'll be at full strength for Sunday's game, a must-win to keep their slim playoff chances alive.
Analysis: Consider Delhomme a low-end No. 1 QB for Week 17. Weinke would have no Fantasy value at this time. With Delhomme starting, the value for Steve Smith and Keyshawn Johnson improves dramatically.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme practiced again Thursday and was upgraded to probable for the Panthers' final regular season game at New Orleans. Delhomme. who has been sidelined since suffering ligament damage in his right thumb against Philadelphia on Dec. 4. will likely start Sunday against the Saints in a game the Panthers must win to keep their playoff hopes alive. They also could be eliminated by the time they play if the New York Giants beat Washington Saturday night. Coach John Fox said Delhomme suffered no setbacks after his first practice in more than three weeks on Wednesday. He again worked with the first team on Thursday, while wearing a protective glove on his throwing hand. "He slung it around pretty good today," Fox said. Chris Weinke has struggled filling in for Delhomme in the past three games, although Carolina beat Atlanta 10-3 last Sunday to stay alive in the playoff race. If the Giants lose to Washington on Saturday night, Carolina would have to beat the Saints on Sunday afternoon and Green Bay would have to lose to Chicago Sunday night. Delhomme, who led the Panthers to the NFC championship game last season, has had an up-and-down season. He has 15 touchdown passes, 11 interceptions and passer rating of only 79.4. In three losses he's thrown fourth-quarter interceptions to end Carolina's chances, including the last pass he threw against the Eagles.
Analysis: Consider Delhomme a low-end No. 1 QB for Week 17. Weinke would have no Fantasy value at this time.
News: Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme practiced Wednesday for the first time in more than three weeks and could play in the Panthers' regular-season finale against New Orleans. Delhomme, sidelined since suffering ligament damage in his right thumb in Carolina's loss to Philadelphia on Dec. 4, had been unable to grip a football. But he was able to throw Wednesday and worked with the first team. He's listed as questionable for Sunday's must-win for the Panthers' to have a chance to reach the playoffs. "It's real good to get your starting quarterback back," Panthers coach John Fox said. "With his leadership and what he means for this team, it's important to have him back."
Analysis: Chris Weinke has struggled filling in for Delhomme in the past three games, and only threw seven passes last week. Consider Delhomme a low-end starting option for Fantasy use in Week 17 if he plays.
News: The Panthers listed QB Jake Delhomme among their inactives for Week 16 against Atlanta as the third quarterback. Also inactive for Carolina are WR Taye Biddle, WR Drew Carter, DB Dion Byrum, RB Nick Goings, RB Steven Jackson and LB Brandon Jamison.
Analysis: Keep Delhomme reserved for Week 16 and continue to monitor his status for Week 17 with his injured thumb. Keep all the other players reserved.
News: Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme missed practice again because of an injured thumb and was downgraded to doubtful for Sunday's game at Atlanta. Delhomme, who had been listed as questionable, hasn't played or practiced since sustaining ligament damage in his right thumb in a loss to Philadelphia on Dec. 4. Chris Weinke most likely will make his third straight start in a must-win for the Panthers to stay alive in the playoff race. Weinke has thrown one touchdown pass, four interceptions and has been sacked seven times filling in for Delhomme the past two weeks.
Analysis: Delhomme should be moved to the bench in all Fantasy leagues for Week 16, and if you play in a championship game this weekend, drop Delhomme for someone who might actually land you some points (Tim Rattay, perhaps). Weinke is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy QB.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme missed practice again Thursday with his sprained right thumb, making it likely he'll miss his third straight game. Delhomme hasn't played or practiced since suffering ligament damage in his right thumb on Dec. 4 at Philadelphia. Chris Weinke started in his place in losses to the New York Giants and Pittsburgh, and will probably start again Sunday at Atlanta. Weinke practiced Thursday despite being added to the injury report as probable with a sore chest.
Analysis: Keep Delhomme reserved unless something changes in his status. Weinke should be considered a No. 3 option at best against Atlanta.
News: The Panthers practiced again Wednesday without quarterback Jake Delhomme, who still can't grip a football because of a sprained right thumb. Delhomme, who has missed the past two games, is listed as questionable. Chris Weinke will start against the Falcons in Week 16 if Delhomme can't play.
Analysis: You know the drill: Keep an eye on the situation and see if Delhomme practices. Consider him a No. 2 option if he does play; keep him reserved if he doesn't. Weinke should be considered a No. 3 option at best.
News: Jake Delhomme stood in the middle of Carolina's locker room Monday afternoon with a large ice pack on his sprained right thumb. The Panthers' quarterback appeared to be far away from returning to the field, but he remains adamant about wanting to return to play this season - even though the Panthers' playoff hopes are bleak. "I don't care if we're out of it or not, you want to play," Delhomme said. "You want to get back in and play."
Analysis: Delhomme acknowledged he still can't grip a football, much less throw it. Delhomme, who suffered ligament damage when his hand hit a defensive lineman's helmet in Carolina's loss to Philadelphia on Dec. 4, hasn't practiced or played in two weeks. Monitor his status in the coming weeks before putting him back in Fantasy lineups.
News: According to the Charlotte Observer, the FOX Sports pregame show Sunday contained a report on Panthers QB Jake Delhomme and the possible end of his career at Carolina, which coach John Fox denied. The TV report said "Delhomme's days in Carolina could be over, and the Panthers will try to draft a quarterback in the next draft." Fox strongly denied the report after the game, saying it didn't come from inside his locker room and had "no validity."
Analysis: Delhomme missed Sunday's game against Pittsburgh with an injured right thumb, the second game he has missed with the injury. Chris Weinke replaced Delhomme against the Steelers and might have to start in Week 16 if Delhomme is unable to go. Continue to monitor his status before setting your lineup.
News: Panthers QB Chris Weinke started and was 18-of-28 passing for 170 yards with an interception vs. Pittsburgh in Week 15. Brett Basanez replaced him and was no better -- 6-of-11 for 56 yards and an interception with 2 yards rushing.
Analysis: With the Panthers slipping to 6-8 and out of the playoff picture, Weinke could see more playing time in the coming weeks with Jake Delhomme (thumb) injured. The Panthers play at Atlanta in Week 16.
News: It's official: Panthers QB Chris Weinke will start vs. Pittsburgh as the team named Jake Delhomme (thumb) as inactive for Week 15. Reports surfaced Sunday that Delhomme could miss the rest of the season.
Analysis: Delhomme should be moved to the bench in all Fantasy leagues for Week 15. Weinke is nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme is doubtful for Sunday's game against Pittsburgh because of ligament damage in his right thumb, meaning Chris Weinke most likely will make his second straight start. Delhomme had been listed as questionable and didn't practice all week, although he did throw on the side Friday. He started 66 straight games before missing last Sunday's loss to the New York Giants. Weinke threw for a team-record 423 yards but had three second-half interceptions against the Giants. The Panthers (6-7) probably will have to beat the Steelers to remain alive in the playoff race.
Analysis: Delhomme should be moved to the bench in all Fantasy leagues for Week 15. Weinke is nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy QB.
News: According to numerous reports, Panthers QB Jake Delhomme tried to throw the football at practice on Friday but had problems. All indications are that Chris Weinke will start for the Panthers vs. Pittsburgh in Week 15.
Analysis: Weinke shouldn't be starting in Fantasy leagues despite his yardage blowout last week. Delhomme should also be benched in all leagues.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme sat out another practice Thursday, increasing the chances Chris Weinke will start Sunday's game against Pittsburgh. Delhomme has damaged ligaments in his right thumb and sat out Sunday's loss to the New York Giants. Weinke made his first start since the 2002 season against the Giants and threw for a franchise-record 423 yards, but was intercepted three times.
Analysis: Keep an eye on the situation, but this is not good news for Delhomme owners. Consider him a No. 2 option if he plays and keep him reserved if he doesn't. Weinke also should be considered a No. 2 option at best.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme did not practice and is questionable for Sunday's game against the Steelers. Delhomme, who has ligament damage in the thumb of his right throwing hand, missed his first game in four seasons last week when he was unable to play in a loss to the Giants. Delhomme watched practice Wednesday from the sideline with a soft black cast on his right hand. He has not thrown since he was injured Dec. 4 against Philadelphia. "It's a situation where it's hard to grip the ball at this stage," coach John Fox said. "He won't do anything from that element (throwing) probably until later in the week." Fox has said that if he's healthy, Delhomme would start vs. Pittsburgh in Week 15. Otherwise, Chris Weinke would get the nod again.
Analysis: Monitor this situation over the coming week if you own Delhomme. The matchup at home against the Steelers is decent but not great. If you own him, keep tabs on him and consider him a potential low-end Fantasy starter.
News: Panthers coach John Fox said Monday that QB Jake Delhomme (thumb) would start vs. Pittsburgh in Week 15 if he demonstrates that he's healthy in the coming week. Delhomme has a torn ligament in the thumb on his throwing hand. Chris Weinke started for him in Week 14 vs. the Giants and would start again against the Steelers if Delhomme is not able to play.
Analysis: Monitor this situation over the coming week if you own Delhomme. The matchup at home against the Steelers is a pretty decent one for Delhomme, so if you own him, keep tabs on him and consider him a potential low-end Fantasy starter.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme was listed among the inactives for Week 14 vs. the N.Y. Giants. Chris Weinke will start in his place.
Analysis: This was anticipated all week so Fantasy owners should already have reserved him. Reserve Delhomme until further notice.
News: ESPN confirms that Chris Weinke will start for QB Jake Delhomme, who has a torn ligament in his thumb. The Panthers play vs. the Giants in Week 14.
Analysis: Weinke should be viewed as a desperation starter at this point since the Panthers will likely run the ball a lot more and not throw too much (this could be bad news for Steve Smith and Keyshawn Johnson). Don't use him if you can help it.
News: The Carolina Panthers promoted rookie quarterback Brett Basanez to the active roster Saturday, another signal that Jake Delhomme may not be able to play Sunday against the New York Giants. Delhomme did not practice all week because of ligament damage in his right thumb caused in Monday's loss to Philadelphia. If he can't play, Chris Weinke would make his first start in more than four years. The Panthers only had two quarterbacks on the active roster, so Basanez was signed off the practice squad to back up Weinke if Delhomme sits out. Basanez, last year's Big Ten player of the year at Northwestern, has spent most of the season running the scout team after being cut just before the start of the season, and has had limited time working with the first team.
Analysis: If you own Delhomme, check with us an hour before gametime on Sunday to get the final word on whether or not he will play. If he starts, he's a low-end option at QB for Fantasy owners. Weinke should be viewed as a desperation Fantasy starter if he indeed plays. Basanez, last year's Big Ten player of the year at Northwestern, has spent most of the season running the scout team after being cut just before the start of the season, and has had limited time working with the first team. He should not be on Fantasy rosters at this time.
News: The Charlotte Observer reports that Panthers QB Jake Delhomme missed practice for the third straight day on Friday and remains questionable for Week 14 vs. the Giants. "Jake's still the same, questionable (on the team injury report), did not practice," coach John Fox said. Fox added that it looks like Delhomme could be a gametime decision for Sunday. If Delhomme can't play, Chris Weinke would start for the Panthers and presumably Brett Basanez would be promoted from the practice squad.
Analysis: Missing three days of practice says a lot about Delhomme's thumb, which either has a sprained or torn ligament inside it. If you own Delhomme, check with us an hour before gametime on Sunday to get the final word on whether or not he will play. If he starts, he's a low-end option at QB for Fantasy owners. Weinke should be viewed as a desperation Fantasy starter if he indeed plays.
News: ESPN's John Clayton reports that Panthers QB Chris Weinke will start vs. the Giants in Week 14, taking the place of Jake Delhomme, who has a torn ligament in his thumb and did not take any snaps in practice this week. Delhomme is still officially questionable and coach John Fox called Delhomme a gametime decision.
Analysis: Missing three days of practice says a lot about Delhomme's thumb, which either has a sprained or torn ligament inside it depending on who you ask. TO Weinke's credit, he's taken all the snaps this week in practice and should be a decent replacement for the Panthers. For Fantasy owners, the news is not good: Delhomme should only be used in leagues if he starts, and Weinke should only start for owners in desperate situations.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme missed practice again Thursday with ligament damage in the thumb on his throwing hand, increasing the chance backup Chris Weinke will start on Sunday against the New York Giants. "It's just real sore," Delhomme said. "There's a lot of swelling and we're trying to get the swelling out. I think the big issue is strength and how much strength I have in it." Delhomme said although he's having trouble gripping the ball, he may try to practice on Friday. Coach John Fox said the ligament is stretched and not torn off the bone, which is why he doesn't need surgery. Fox didn't rule out that Delhomme, who is still listed as questionable, could still play on Sunday. Delhomme, who also missed practice on Wednesday, hasn't missed a game since he took over for Rodney Peete at halftime of the 2003 season opener.
Analysis: It looks like Delhomme will miss the game against the Giants, but continue to monitor his status. Weinke is not a recommended Fantasy choice unless you have no other option. The 34-year-old Weinke hasn't been a full-time starter since the 2001 season and has thrown only 13 passes in four seasons.
News: According to the Charlotte Observer, injured Panthers QB Jake Delhomme sat out his second straight day of practice Thursday, increasing the already-strong chance backup Chris Weinke will start Sunday against the New York Giants. Delhomme damaged a ligament in his right thumb in Monday night’s loss to Philadelphia. He finished the game, but the thumb became sore soon after. Weinke, who hasn’t started a game since 2002, has been working with the first team this week. If Delhomme can’t play Sunday, the Panthers are likely to elevate rookie quarterback Brett Basanez from the practice squad to back up Weinke.
Analysis: It looks like Delhomme will miss the game against the Giants, but continue to monitor his status. Weinke is not a recommended Fantasy choice unless you have no other option.
News: The Charlotte Observer reports Wednesday that Panthers QB Jake Delhomme has torn ligaments on the thumb on his throwing hand and is not likely to play vs. the Giants in Week 14, according to a league source. The team is calling his injury a thumb sprain and listed him as questionable on the injury report.
Analysis: Fantasy owners who have Delhomme have to monitor this situation closely over the next week. If he doesn't play, Chris Weinke will start for the Panthers. Weinke is not a recommended Fantasy choice unless you have no other option.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme missed practice Wednesday with a sprained right thumb and is questionable for Sunday's game against the Giants. Delhomme was injured when his throwing hand hit a helmet on his 9-yard touchdown pass to Steve Smith in the first quarter. Delhomme continued to play and coach John Fox said he wasn't aware of the injury until after the game. Fox said X-rays taken after the game were negative and an MRI on Tuesday showed no serious damage. Backup Chris Weinke took the snaps with the first team Wednesday. If Delhomme can't play, Weinke would make his first NFL start since 2001. "It's sore," Delhomme said. "If I played any other position, there would be no question I'd play, but it's a pretty important part of the throwing process of holding on, so we'll see."
Analysis: Monitor Delhomme's status throughout the week if you are planning on using him in Week 14 Fantasy play. Obviously, have a contingency plan if Delhomme is unable to play as Weinke would not be a desirable Fantasy option. We considered Delhomme a low-end No. 1 Fantasy QB for the game vs. the G-Men before the injury was reported.
News: Jake Delhomme completed 22-of-37 passes for 269 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 13 at Philadelphia.
Analysis: Delhomme might find the sledding a little tougher for Week 14 against the Giants. He is still a decent low-end No. 1 Fantasy quarterback option.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme is on pace to throw for 17 touchdowns for Carolina this year after averaging 24 over the previous three seasons.
Analysis: Consider Delhomme a low-end No. 1 QB for Week 13 against the Eagles.
News: Panthers coach John Fox has said that, barring injury, Jake Delhomme will remain the starter. But Delhomme needs to improve for the Panthers to get out of their funk. Delhomme has struggled with his accuracy, but he has always found a way to get the ball to Steve Smith. But he's consistently thrown too high for receivers this season, and he's had costly fourth-quarter interceptions in losses to Cincinnati and Washington. Delhomme said he wakes up in the middle of the night asking himself what he could have done to play better. He's hard on himself, but many of his teammates thinks the fans are too hard on Delhomme. "What I would say to talk radio guys is shut up," WR Keyshawn Johnson said. "He was everybody's hero in 2003 when he came in, and now the guy has a couple of interceptions and all of sudden you want to get rid of him. It doesn't make much sense to me. He's not throwing our season away. That's not the case at all."
Analysis: Delhomme's problems extend beyond him as his offensive line is wounded and the running game has been inconsistent. Fantasy owners forced to rely on him can get by as he plays at a ragged Eagles pass defense in Week 13, but he should be considered a low-end starting Fantasy QB.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme is getting too much of the blame for Carolina's offensive woes and will remain the starter, coach John Fox said Monday. "When you drop back to pass the ball it's a team effort," Fox said a day after the Panthers mustered only 264 yards in a 17-13 loss to Washington, which has the 30th-ranked defense. "Whenever you don't play well enough to win I'm not sure it's one guy. It's definitely not just Jake." Delhomme was 23-of-38 for 168 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against the Redskins. Delhomme has 12 touchdown passes, nine interceptions and a passer rating of only 78.7. But Fox said that, barring injury, he'll remain the starter ahead of Chris Weinke. "I think he's proven he's the right guy," Fox said. "Until he proves otherwise, we'll stay the same. I can't sit here and predict the future, but I don't want to give any inclinations that we're thinking about changing the quarterback."
Analysis: Delhomme should be fine and consider him a low-end No. 1 QB for Week 13 against the Eagles.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme broke Steve Beuerlein's franchise records in two more categories against Washington. He's now the Panthers' leader in completions (1,056) and passing yards (12,850). It wasn't a good day for Delhomme, however, because he was 23-of-38 passing for 168 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against Washington.
Analysis: Look for Delhomme to bounce-back in Week 13 against the Eagles. Consider him a low-end No. 1 starter.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme was 23-of-38 passing for 168 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against Washington.
Analysis: It was a disappointing day for Delhomme. Consider him a low-end No. 1 QB for Week 13 against Philadelphia.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme threw for 191 yards and a touchdown in Week 11 vs. St. Louis. He was also intercepted once.
Analysis: It wasn't a great game, but it wasn't a bad game either. Delhomme was just effecient on a day when there was little scoring. Consider him a great start in all leagues for a favorable matchup at Washington.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme said the Panthers didn't change much on Monday night at halftime against Tampa Bay despite their 24-point second half explosion. "No, we just played better. We executed better," Delhomme said o the 24-point second half outburst. "In the first half, we never really got anything going. We started to on drives here and there, but never really sustained anything. We just needed to come out in the second half and play better. The first drive was nice. We went down the field and only got three, but at least we moved the ball. The next thing you know, things just started working from there. I'm optimistic we can build off of that. That's what we're working toward."
Analysis: Consider Delhomme a good start in Week 11 against St. Louis and hope he can build off last week's second half against Tampa Bay.
News: Jake Delhomme completed 22-of-34 passes for 240 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Week 10 against the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Delhomme is a decent low-end Fantasy option for Week 11 against the Rams.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme has completed less than 60 percent of his passes with just eight touchdowns and five interceptions -- numbers that pale in comparison to his previous three seasons with the Panthers. In Carolina's last two defeats, Delhomme has thrown costly interceptions in the fourth quarter, the worst coming against Cincinnati with the Panthers down three points and in scoring position. Delhomme has also overthrown receivers much of the season and just generally seems to be off the mark on a lot of throws. Clearly he's capable of playing much better, and given the competitor Delhomme is, it's a safe guess he'll step it up a notch over the next eight games and at least put his team in position to make a playoff run.
Analysis: Expect a solid game from Delhomme in Week 10 vs. Tampa Bay as he's had two weeks to rest and prepare. Earlier this season he threw over 270 yards against them. Use him as a starter if you can and you don't have a better QB on staff.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme completed 17-of-31 passes for 149 yards in a 35-14 loss to the Cowboys in Week 8. He had no touchdown passes, threw one interception and was sacked three times.
Analysis: Delhomme did not look comfortable in the pocket playing against the Cowboys and could not get the offense going after two first quarter scores. The Panthers are on a bye in Week 9, so make sure to take Delhomme out of your lineup.
News: Aside from a few angry talk show callers and the occasional plea for backup Chris Weinke, there is nothing close to a quarterback controversy in Carolina. There hasn't been one since current starter Jake Delhomme replaced Rodney Peete at halftime of the Panthers' season opener in 2003. Delhomme has started all 54 regular-season games and seven playoff games since, helping the Panthers reach the Super Bowl at the end of the 2003 season and the NFC championship game last season. "Jake's done a good job for us, and we're happy with him," coach John Fox said. "That's one position that we feel solid at."
Analysis: Delhomme has really not delivered this season, but a lot of that has to do with Steve Smith being sidelined with hamstring injuries. If there's any positives, it's that Delhomme has thrown two TDs in three of his last four games -- all with Smith in the lineup. Consider Delhomme a low-end Fantasy QB vs. Dallas in Week 8.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme was 20-of-34 passing for 238 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against Cincinnati.
Analysis: Consider Delhomme a safe start for Week 8 against Dallas. He is starting to come on since the return of Steve Smith.
News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme was 24-of-39 passing for 365 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions against Baltimore. He threw a 42-yard touchdown to Drew Carter and a 72-yard touchdown to Steve Smith.
Analysis: Delhomme was unstoppable against the Ravens and will look to continue his stellar play in Week 7 against Cincinnati.
News: Jake Delhomme was 20-of-29 for 170 yards and no interceptions in Week 5 against the Browns. He was sacked only once even though Carolina again played without starting center Justin Hartwig due to a groin injury.
Analysis: Delhomme remains a bottom-end starting Fantasy QB in leagues in general, especially playing at Baltimore in Week 6 which is a poor matchup.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme was 19-of-29 passing for 169 yards and two touchdowns vs. New Orleans in Week 4. Of the 169 yards, 150 of them went to Steve Smith and Keyshawn Johnson.
Analysis: Delhomme remains a bottom-end starting Fantasy QB in leagues in general, but playing vs. Cleveland at home in Week 5 will give him a great matchup. Start him if you have him.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme was 22-of-36 passing for 272 yards with a touchdown, 12 rushing yards and two fumbles lost at Tampa Bay in Week 3. Delhomme made the most of having Steve Smith back, connecting with him on seven passes for 112 yards, and making defenses pay for covering Smith by hitting Keyshawn Johnson seven times for 97 yards and a TD.
Analysis: Fantasy owners should have some regained confidence in Delhomme, who has a nice matchup vs. New Orleans in Week 4. He should be starting for most owners in the coming week.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme overcame a rough start and completed 17-of-33 passes for 181 yards at Minnesota in Week 2. In two weeks, Delhomme has not passed for over 200 yards in a game or thrown a single TD pass. "It's disappointing, but nobody feels sorry for us," Delhomme said after the game. "You have to go back to work and try to get better."
Analysis: Think he's missing Steve Smith? True, he gave Keyshawn Johnson a 106-yard game, but without his trusted All-Pro wideout, Delhomme looks pretty pedestrian. Owners may want to sit him down when he plays at Tampa Bay in Week 3 -- if they have a suitable reserve on staff.
News: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme, playing without WR Steve Smith, was 21-of-39 passing for 186 yards and an interception vs. Atlanta in Week 1. Delhomme was sacked four times, fumbling the ball away once, and connected more with Drew Carter than Keyshawn Johnson.
Analysis: Bottom line: Delhomme isn't a 300-yard quarterback without Steve Smith on the field. He should have a better game at Minnesota in Week 2 -- but consider benching him if Smith doesn't play again next week.
News: Jake Delhomme, 31, is coming off his first Pro Bowl appearance last season, completing a career-high 60.2 percent of his passes for 3,421 yards with 24 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in 2005. A natural leader in the huddle, players tend to respond to him and play harder (example: Steve Smith). Delhomme has a strong defense, so it's vital that he stays away from mistakes and forcing the ball into coverage. In the same breath, the Panthers don't want to handcuff Delhomme's creativity, which is one of the things that make him a very good quarterback. Delhomme needs to do a better job of holding on to the ball after getting hit. He turned the ball over six times last season on fumbles.
Analysis: Delhomme starts 2006 playing a revamped Falcons defense. Last year he was decent in two starts, tossing two TDs in each game but not going over 165 yards passing in either contest. Those numbers could be repeated, but the Falcons' defensive line is much stronger now than it was late in 2005 when they played the Panthers. Start him if you drafted him to be your starter, but consider other options if you have another powerful QB with a good matchup on staff already.
News: Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme played one series, completed two passes for 6 yards, then was sacked on third down and never returned in the team’s preseason finale at Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Delhomme is an interesting case in Fantasy Football: Some owners swear by him and others think he's too soft to use. The guy seems to be a lock for over 3,000 yards, though (he's done in three straight years), and while he will give away 12-to-15 balls on interceptions, he'll also throw close to 20 touchdowns and provide some 300-yard games. Consider him a top-12 Fantasy passer.

News: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme didn't practice Wednesday as he recovers from a hit that knocked him out of last week's game against Detroit. The Panthers had the luxury of holding him out a day because they have a bye this weekend. But if they did have a game, Delhomme said he was positive he could play. "I feel great," Delhomme said. "I felt fine on Monday, actually. I was fine after the game. I remembered every play. I had an appetite. No headache. It was just a good hit."
Analysis: So Delhomme will be the starter when the Panthers next play, Oct. 30 against the Vikings. Before the question could even be completed, coach John Fox cut it off. "There's not a quarterback controversy, if that's your question," he said with conviction. Fox knows Delhomme will need to limit his mistakes if the Panthers are going to continue winning. Consider Delhomme as solid option based on the matchup in Week 8.

And David Macklin, the team's other starter, didn't make it past the first quarter with a strained hamstring and it's doubtful he'll play this week. If Walls and Macklin can't play, that means the two starters will be rookies Eric Green and Lamont Reid. The only backup is veteran Robert Tate, who had an interception against the 49ers.

"We went down the field and were able to hit some short passes. We got a lot of pressure from Washington and the offensive line was the key. They gave us time and we were able to make some plays down the field. Rod Gardner made a great play for the touchdown."
Analysis: Delhomme is a quality Fantasy QB in platoon situations, meaning when paired with another good QB produces well when the matchup is right.

News: Jake Delhomme replaced Peete as the Panthers' quarterback during the second half of Sunday's game. Delhomme finished with 122 passing yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, including the game-winning score with 16 seconds left.
Analysis: Delhomme is still not a recommended Fantasy pickup based on his history of inconsistency. This performance might earn him another start, but he'd be facing Tampa Bay, a poor matchup.
News: Jake Delhomme will be the backup to starter Rodney Peete. Chris Weinke will serve as the No. 3 quarterback.
Analysis: Delhomme has more upside than either of the other two Carolina quarterbacks. If you drafted Delhomme in the late rounds and can afford the roster spot, keep him stashed away on reserve.
