NFL slaps Aldon Smith with nine-game suspension

(8/29/2014) The NFL has announced that 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith has been suspended for nine games for multiple charges.

Smith has been charged with a DUI and also made a bomb threat at an airport. He has also dealt with a felony firearms issue.

The suspension is a bit longer than what had been anticipated for Smith, who racked up 8 1/2 sacks in just 11 games a year ago after recording 19 1/2 in a full season in 2012.


Report: Aldon Smith could be facing 6-8-game suspension

(8/8/2014) 49ers are bracing for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend linebacker Aldon Smith for six-to-eight games, according to a report from Matt Maiocco of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.

Smith met with the commissioner on Thursday to discuss his pending suspension for facing multiple charges including a DUI, a felony firearms issue and making a bomb threat at an airport. A ruling is expected to be made by Goodell in the near future.

(7/1/2014) 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith will not have charges brought up against him for his actions in a Los Angeles airport back in April, ESPN reports. Smith allegedly made false bomb threats and was arrested. 

Smith is still expected to be suspended for at least one game following his sentencing for pleading no contest to May DUI and felony weapons charges. 

Smith served a five-game suspension last season.

(6/25/2014) 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith will be suspended at least one game by the league following his July 25 sentencing, reports Pro Football Talk. Smith pleaded no contest in May to DUI and felony weapons charges.

Smith is not expected to get jail time, but the NFL will suspend him for one game and "possibly more," the report said. He served a five-game suspension last season.

(5/22/2014) 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith is expected to receive a stiff punishment from the NFL for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

USA Today reported that a suspension is a "matter of when, and for how long" following Smith's no-contest plea on Wednesday to charges of possessing illegal assault rifles and misdemeanor DUI, stemming from separate incidents in 2012 and 2013. Smith served a five-game suspension last season following the DUI arrest, but alcohol along with guns are major issues within the league right now, and the NFL could consider Smith a repeat offender and hand down a subsequent punishment. 


Aldon Smith's fifth-year option officially picked up

The Niners expressed recently that they "hope" he'll be on the roster for a long time after a series of arrests over the past few years including one this offseason for a false bomb threat at an airport. 


49ers expected to pick up Aldon Smith option

(5/1/2014) The 49ers have until Saturday at 4 p.m. ET to make a decision on the fifth-year team option for linebacker Aldon Smith, but CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports several league sources anticipate the 49ers picking it up.

La Canfora reports the decision will be watched closely given Smith's off-field issues.


49ers GM wants to keep Aldon Smith for years to come

(4/25/2014) 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said he was disappointed in linebacker Aldon Smith's latest arrest but wants Smith to be a 49er for years to come, reports the San Jose Mercury News. The team can pick up a 2015 option on Smith but has not done so yet.

Asked if he hopes Smith will be on the team in 2014 and 2015, Baalke replied: "And in 2016 and 2017 and 2018." Baalke described Smith's mindset as: "Growing. Starting to understand, starting to realize the importance of his own accountability."

Smith is participating in the team's voluntary minicamp.


Aldon Smith's case referred for 'misdemeanor consideration'

(4/24/2014) 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith, accused of making a fake bomb threat at LAX airport April 13, had his case referred for "misdemeanor consideration" by the Los Angeles County District Attorney, reports the San Jose Mercury News.

Smith is participating in the team's offseason program this week. He made the alleged threat during security screening, the paper said.

Smith also is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday on charges stemming from an alleged drunk driving accident and felony weapons possession, the report said.

Smith's future is very much up in the air following another arrest for the troubled linebacker. A suspension is believed to be coming.

(4/16/2014) Several 49ers decision makers allegedly believe that linebacker Aldon Smith won't play for the team in 2014. Smith was arrested recently for making false bomb reports at a Los Angeles airport, the latest of a string of troubles for the highly talented linebacker.

The San Jose Mercury News has sources that tell him that while Smith is unlikely to play, the team is unlikely to release him. They still owe him $3 million guaranteed and want to see how the situation plays out before making such a permanent decision. The team also expects Smith to receive a suspension from the league. 

In addition to his latest run-in with the law, Smith was arrested for suspicion of DUI in January, 2012 and again September, 2013. He also had marijuana on him during that September arrest. In October, 2013 he was charged with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon. 


Aldon Smith charged with false report of bomb threat at LAX

(4/13/2014) 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith was charged with a false report of a bomb threat at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday, NFL Media reports.

The airport police issued a statement regarding the charges, according to the Sacramento Bee.

"At approximately 1400 hours, a 24-year-old Aldon Jacarus Ramon Smith, a resident of San Jose, California, was going through Terminal 1 screening where he made a comment indicating that he was in possession of a bomb. Los Angeles Airport Police made contact with him in the gate area where he became uncooperative. After conducting their investigation, L.A. Airport Police took suspect into custody and transported him to LAPD-Pacific division where he was booked for California Penal Code 148.1(a) - False report of a bomb threat."

Aldon Smith has monster performance in playoff loss

(1/19/2014) 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith made his impact felt on the first play of Sunday's NFC Championship game against the Seahawks.

Smith stripped Russell Wilson and recovered the loose ball, which led to a San Francisco field goal early in the opening period. He finished the game with four total tackles (two solo), a sack and a tackle for loss in a 23-17 victory.

Despite missing five games this season, Smith the year with a team-high 10.5 sacks (including the postseason).

(1/15/2014) 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith has three quarterback hits, two hurries and 1.5 sacks in two playoff games after racking up 8.5 sacks in 11 regular-season games.

“Teams that want to block Aldon Smith one-on-one are whistling Dixie," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "That’s the way he’s playing right now.

“Therefore, he’s getting quite a bit of double-teams, chips, help from the back and tight end. He’s really playing well.”


49ers DST brings heavy pass rush

(1/5/2014) The 49ers sacked Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers four times in their 23-20 playoff win, including two by linebacker Ahmad Brooks and 1 1/2 by linebacker Aldon Smith. It was the most Rodgers had been sacked all season.

San Francisco held Green Bay to 6 yards in the first quarter, 281 overall. But the 49ers DST failed to force a turnover. The unit will look to be more disruptive in next Sunday's playoff game at Carolina.


Aldon Smith nets third multi-sack game

Smith has totaled 8 1/2 sacks in nine games and has four in his last four games.

Every player was listed as probable except Brown and Manningham, who were questionable.

Smith took down Robert Griffin III twice -- all in the second half. He finished the game with three total tackles (two solo), two sacks and two tackles for loss in a 27-6 victory. He has 6.5 sacks o the year.
