49ers DC Eric Mangini says Aldon Smith is not easy to replace

by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(8/10/2015) After the 49ers released Pro Bowl linebacker Aldon Smith last week, defensive coordinator Eric Mangini has made it clear that repalcing him will not be easy, per NFL.com.

"He's not a guy you can just replace; he's got a unique skill set," Mangini said, per the San Francisco Chronicle. "But one of the things we've focused on defensively is building flexibility in terms of what we can play."

Smith -- a Pro Bowler in 2012 -- recorded 15 tackles and two sacks in seven games last season.

by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(8/7/2015) In light of his most recent off-field issues, the 49ers have released linebacker Aldon Smith, according to an ESPN report.

Smith, who has a long history with legal problems, was arrested early Friday morning for hit and run, DUI and vandalism.

"This organization has tried very hard to help Aldon fight his issues," a team statement read. "Although he is no longer a member of this team, our support and concern for him will continue."

Smith served a nine-game suspension last year after a number of legal issues. He was arrested in 2012 for DUI, and faced weapons charges later that year.

In seven games last season, Smith recorded 15 tackles and two sacks for San Francisco.

49ers GM Trent Baalke: Team wants to keep Davis, Smith

by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(8/5/2015) The 49ers have the intent to try and keep tight end Vernon Davis and linebacker Aldon Smith, according to NFL.com.

49ers general manager Trent Baalke said that the team's future is one where both Davis and Smith are cornerstones of the franchise.

Smith, who has had conduct issues in the past, is still perceived as a key player on the team and Baalke wants him around for the long run.

"He's in his contract year," he said. "He's poised to have a very good year. We expect him to have a very good year. I think he expects himself to have a very good year. We're going to work hard to make sure that he remains here."

Davis, who the 49ers drafted in the first round back in 2006, will likely retired in San Francisco if the team keeps him around after his current contract.

"We're always going to try to keep our own. Sometimes it works. As you've seen, sometimes it doesn't," Baalke said. "But Vernon and I have had conversations, and we'll leave it at that. He understands where we are, and we certainly understand where he is."

49ers LB Aldon Smith on his A-game: 'I can't be stopped'

by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(6/12/2015) 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith is a force to be reckoned with when he's on the field, that much has been clear during organized team activities.

Smith is on the short list for defensive MVP for the team's offseason program. He used this offseason as an opportunity to get into better shape and to make sure he's ready for the season.

“Really just getting into the optimal shape I want to be in,” Smith said. “I want to come in and make sure I’m ready to go.”

The strong offseason performance comes on the heels of a 2014 season in which Smith posted a career-low two sacks in seven games of action.

“I don’t think I played to my level, and I want to do everything it takes to play consistently at my level,” Smith said. “I know that when I’m playing consistently and I’m on my game, I can’t be stopped.”

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(5/16/2015) 49ers rookie defensive end Eli Harold is eager to learn from coach Charles Haley, even when he's not the one being coached. Harold spent part of Friday's practice eavesdropping when Haley was giving tips to linebacker Aldon Smith

"That’s a Hall of Famer," Harold said, per ESPN. "And I feel that Aldon has all the intangibles to be a future Hall of Famer. I’m just trying to learn everything I can and just picking up little key words that he was saying. ... Things I’ve never seen or heard,” Harold said. “I feel like it will definitely help me in the future. Definitely advanced things. He was talking balance and target. Where to keep you eyes and head level. Things like that."

49ers GM says LB Aldon Smith developing as leader for team

"It’s a role I’m comfortable with,” Smith said. “I’m kind of one of the older guys on the team now. I’m one of the guys who has been here for a while, so I’m helping out people who need help with anything, whether that’s knowing where to go down here or football questions.”

Smith served a nine-game suspension during the 2014 season for violating the league's policies on personal conduct and substance abuse.

Trent Baalke praises 49ers LB Aldon Smith's offseason work ethic

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(4/17/2015) 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith has had plenty of off-field issues since entering the NFL.

After serving a nine-game suspension a year ago for violating the NFL's personal-conduct and substance-abuse policy, Smith returned and only tallied two sacks.

The time off followed by sub-par performances has ignited Smith on the practice field thus far, according to general manager Trent Baalke.

"He’s probably in as good a shape as he’s been in a long time," Baalke said, via the San Jose Mercury News. "He’s starting to develop into a leader out there, which is good to see and been a pleasure to watch."

Baalke knows that Smith has an uphill climb in repairing his image. But while Smith attempts to do so, Baalke wanted the San Francisco media to know that Smith is doing what he can to improve ont he playing field.

“He’s got a great look in his eye,” Baalke said. “He’s doing well. I look forward to having you guys visit with him.”

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(2/19/2015) 49ers general manager Trent Baalke spoke about defensive end Aldon Smith Thursday at the NFL combine, calling him "a tremendous young man," according to the team's website.

"Well, we sure hope so," Baalke said when asked if Smith would be able to mesh the professional and personal. "A lot of people haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Aldon. A great young man. He’s had some off-the-field adversity, some personal adversity that he’s trying to deal with and is dealing with. But, if you’ve ever had an opportunity to meet him, I think you’d feel how most of us feel, a tremendous young man."

Smith served a nine-game suspension during the 2014 season for violating the league's policies on personal conduct and substance abuse. He recorded two sacks in his seven games after returning from the suspension.
