Report: Niners won't release Aldon Smith

(4/18/2014) The 49ers might expect a suspension for pass rushing linebacker Aldon Smith, but they are not planning to release him, NFL Network reported on Friday.

Smith was arrested recently for making false bomb reports at a Los Angeles airport, the latest of a string of troubles for the highly talented linebacker. He was also arrested for suspicion of DUI in January, 2012 and again September, 2013. He also had marijuana on him during that September arrest. In October, 2013 he was charged with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon. 


Report: Niners want to play without Aldon Smith in 2014

(4/16/2014) Several 49ers decision makers allegedly believe that linebacker Aldon Smith won't play for the team in 2014. Smith was arrested recently for making false bomb reports at a Los Angeles airport, the latest of a string of troubles for the highly talented linebacker.

The San Jose Mercury News has sources that tell him that while Smith is unlikely to play, the team is unlikely to release him. They still owe him $3 million guaranteed and want to see how the situation plays out before making such a permanent decision. The team also expects Smith to receive a suspension from the league. 

In addition to his latest run-in with the law, Smith was arrested for suspicion of DUI in January, 2012 and again September, 2013. He also had marijuana on him during that September arrest. In October, 2013 he was charged with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon. 


Aldon Smith charged with false report of bomb threat at LAX

(4/13/2014) 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith was charged with a false report of a bomb threat at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday, NFL Media reports.

The airport police issued a statement regarding the charges, according to the Sacramento Bee.

"At approximately 1400 hours, a 24-year-old Aldon Jacarus Ramon Smith, a resident of San Jose, California, was going through Terminal 1 screening where he made a comment indicating that he was in possession of a bomb. Los Angeles Airport Police made contact with him in the gate area where he became uncooperative. After conducting their investigation, L.A. Airport Police took suspect into custody and transported him to LAPD-Pacific division where he was booked for California Penal Code 148.1(a) - False report of a bomb threat."

Aldon Smith has monster performance in playoff loss

(1/19/2014) 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith made his impact felt on the first play of Sunday's NFC Championship game against the Seahawks.

Smith stripped Russell Wilson and recovered the loose ball, which led to a San Francisco field goal early in the opening period. He finished the game with four total tackles (two solo), a sack and a tackle for loss in a 23-17 victory.

Despite missing five games this season, Smith the year with a team-high 10.5 sacks (including the postseason).

(1/15/2014) 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith has three quarterback hits, two hurries and 1.5 sacks in two playoff games after racking up 8.5 sacks in 11 regular-season games.

“Teams that want to block Aldon Smith one-on-one are whistling Dixie," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "That’s the way he’s playing right now.

“Therefore, he’s getting quite a bit of double-teams, chips, help from the back and tight end. He’s really playing well.”


49ers DST brings heavy pass rush

(1/5/2014) The 49ers sacked Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers four times in their 23-20 playoff win, including two by linebacker Ahmad Brooks and 1 1/2 by linebacker Aldon Smith. It was the most Rodgers had been sacked all season.

San Francisco held Green Bay to 6 yards in the first quarter, 281 overall. But the 49ers DST failed to force a turnover. The unit will look to be more disruptive in next Sunday's playoff game at Carolina.


Aldon Smith nets third multi-sack game

(12/16/2013) 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith totaled two sacks for the third time this season during a 33-14 win Week 15 at Tampa Bay. Smith finished with four solo tackles and three quarterback hits.

Smith has totaled 8 1/2 sacks in nine games and has four in his last four games. 


49ers clear 11 players for Week 15

(12/15/2013) 49ers cornerback Tarell Brown (ribs), wide receiver Mario Manningham (knee), wide receiver Michael Crabtree (ankle), safety Craig Dahl (ankle), running back Frank Gore (ankle), defensive tackle Ray McDonald (ankle), linebacker Dan Skuta (foot), linebacker Aldon Smith (shoulder), defensive lineman Justin Smith (shoulder), guard Adam Snyder (not injury related) and tackle Joe Staley (knee) were all cleared to play Week 15 at Tampa Bay. Every player was listed as probable except Brown and Manningham, who were questionable.

Eight 49ers probable Week 15

(12/13/2013) The 49ers have listed WR Jon Baldwin, S Craig Dahl, DT Ray McDonald, LB Dan Skuta, LB Aldon Smith, DT Justin Smith, OL Adam Snyder and OL Joe Staley as probable Week 15.

Both Aldon and Justin Smith are dealing with shoulder injuries. Snyder is listed as a "non-injury" on the report.

(11/26/2013) 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith got back on track with a dominant performance during Monday's win over the Redskins in Week 12.

Smith took down Robert Griffin III twice -- all in the second half. He finished the game with three total tackles (two solo), two sacks and two tackles for loss in a 27-6 victory. He has 6.5 sacks o the year.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio confirmed that Smith would probably get on the field for a few plays, but it sounds like he could be limited. Smith hasn't played since September 22 after entering rehab.

(10/31/2013)  The 49ers activated linebacker Aldon Smith from the non-football injury list Thursday, meaning he is eligible to play in Week 10 against the Panthers.

Smith has been on the NFI list since Sept. 23, following a DUI arrest and a subsequent leave of absence from the team. It is not clear whether he will be in the team's game plan when they return from a bye week. Smith has two court appearances scheduled for shortly after the team's next game.

(10/30/2013) San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith has turned himself in to authorities on felony weapons charges, CBSSports.com reports Wednesday.

Smith was later released on $75,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 12. On Nov. 19, Smith will be back in court to face misdemeanor DUI and drug charges.

Smith is currently on a voluntary leave of absence from the team and undergoing rehab following DUI arrest on Sept. 20.

"I am taking a leave of absence to address my health," Smith said in a statement at the time. "I am sorry that I have affected my team, my family and the organization. I will do everything in my power to handle this situation the best way possible. I appreciate the support of the 49ers and our fans."

Aldon Smith expected to meet with 49ers soon

(10/25/2013) The 49ers will meet with linebacker Aldon Smith  soon to discuss his status with the club, according to CSN.

General manager Trent Baalke said the ultimate goal is to figure out Smith's long-term plan with the club. He said there was still a chance Smith could play for the team this season, but that he would need to show "progress" first. Baalke added that many different factors go into whether Smith is making progress. Smith voluntarily entered rehab after the third week of the season.

49ers offer brief statement about Aldon Smith's 'legal matter'

(10/9/2013) The 49ers released a statement Wednesday in wake of the NBC Bay Area report linebacker Aldon Smith has been issued three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon by the Santa Clara County District Attorney. The charges stem from a June 2012 house party hosted by Smith where he was stabbed and two others were shot, and deputies later found a cache of assault rifles, magazines and ammunition. 

"The 49ers organization is aware of the recent developments with Aldon arising from an incident at his home in 2012," the statement from the team said. "We recognize the serious nature of this situation, as does Aldon, and will continue to monitor it closely. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment."


No timetable for Aldon Smith's return

(10/7/2013) 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday there is still no timetable for the return of linebacker Aldon Smith, who is on the NFI list for personal reasons. Though, Harbaugh said he "heard things are going very well."

Dan Skuta to replace Aldon Smith in starting lineup

(9/23/2013) Dan Skuta is listed as a starting outside linebacker now that the 49ers have placed Aldon Smith on the reserve/non-football injury list, according to the team's website. Smith took an indefinite leave of absence to go to a rehab facility.

NFL.com reports Smith is expected to miss a month or so. Skuta has two tackles this season after making 26 stops for the Bengals last year.

(9/23/2013) The 49ers announced Monday linebacker Aldon Smith was placed on the reserve/NFI list for personal reasons.

"Aldon Smith is taking a leave of absence to address a personal matter," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said. "The 49ers organization both respects and supports Aldon’s decision and commends him for taking responsibility for his actions. The long-term well-being of our players is paramount and we will stand by Aldon as he works toward addressing this issue. Due to the private nature of the matter, we will have no further comment."

Smith also released a statement.
