Aldon Smith makes immediate impact

(11/17/2014) 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said outside linebacker Aldon Smith "did some good things" in his return Sunday from a nine-game suspension.

"Powered some blockers back into the quarterback," Harbaugh told the team's website. "He was close and definitely put pressure on the quarterback. Think the quarterback felt him, as he did our pass rush... There will be things to grow from in that regard. And I think the instincts will be honed quickly and the reflexes will come back very quickly."

Smith was credited with two QB hurries in the 16-10 win over the Giants, with safety Antoine Bethea saying Smith's presence contributed to Eli Manning's five interceptions. According to ESPN.com, Smith entered in the second quarter and basically played the rest of the game.

49ers officially add LB Aldon Smith to active roster

Smith worked out at the team facility and attended meetings during his suspension. He said he watched tape and did some "self-scouting" to prepare for his return.

Smith will play Sunday against the Giants, though it's unclear how many snaps he'll get.

(11/9/2014) Despite speculation he'd get his nine-game suspension reduced, 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith will serve the final game of that suspension Sunday and be unavailable to face the Saints. ESPN's Ed Werder, citing two league sources, reports Smith "did more than mandated in terms of community service" but "did not fulfill the obligations assigned him in terms of his counseling protocol."

Smith, who has 42 sacks in 43 career games, was suspended for violating league policies on personal conduct and substance abuse. He's expected to be in the lineup Week 11 when the 49ers visit the Giants.

(11/4/2014) Even though the 49ers cleared a roster spot by waiving Demarcus Dobbs, linebacker Aldon Smith is not expected to be reinstated from his nine-game suspension Tuesday, according to NFL.com. It also seems unlikely Smith will be added to roster Wednesday.

Smith has been trying to get his suspension reduced for a few weeks. He has already served eight games of his suspension for violating league policies on personal conduct and substance abuse.

Smith is serving a nine-game suspension for violating league policies on personal conduct and substance abuse. The 49ers have played seven games. According to a ProFootballTalk.com report last week, Smith was hoping for a 1-2 game reduction due to good behavior.

The 49ers are on a bye this week. If Smith's suspension gets cut, he could return as early as Week 9 against the Rams, the report said.

Smith has been charged with a DUI and also made a bomb threat at an airport. He has also dealt with a felony firearms issue.

The suspension is a bit longer than what had been anticipated for Smith, who racked up 8 1/2 sacks in just 11 games a year ago after recording 19 1/2 in a full season in 2012.

Smith met with the commissioner on Thursday to discuss his pending suspension for facing multiple charges including a DUI, a felony firearms issue and making a bomb threat at an airport. A ruling is expected to be made by Goodell in the near future.

USA Today reported that a suspension is a "matter of when, and for how long" following Smith's no-contest plea on Wednesday to charges of possessing illegal assault rifles and misdemeanor DUI, stemming from separate incidents in 2012 and 2013. Smith served a five-game suspension last season following the DUI arrest, but alcohol along with guns are major issues within the league right now, and the NFL could consider Smith a repeat offender and hand down a subsequent punishment.

(4/25/2014) 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said he was disappointed in linebacker Aldon Smith's latest arrest but wants Smith to be a 49er for years to come, reports the San Jose Mercury News. The team can pick up a 2015 option on Smith but has not done so yet.

Asked if he hopes Smith will be on the team in 2014 and 2015, Baalke replied: "And in 2016 and 2017 and 2018." Baalke described Smith's mindset as: "Growing. Starting to understand, starting to realize the importance of his own accountability."

Smith is participating in the team's voluntary minicamp.

(4/24/2014) 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith, accused of making a fake bomb threat at LAX airport April 13, had his case referred for "misdemeanor consideration" by the Los Angeles County District Attorney, reports the San Jose Mercury News.

Smith is participating in the team's offseason program this week. He made the alleged threat during security screening, the paper said.

Smith also is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday on charges stemming from an alleged drunk driving accident and felony weapons possession, the report said.

(4/16/2014) Several 49ers decision makers allegedly believe that linebacker Aldon Smith won't play for the team in 2014. Smith was arrested recently for making false bomb reports at a Los Angeles airport, the latest of a string of troubles for the highly talented linebacker.

The San Jose Mercury News has sources that tell him that while Smith is unlikely to play, the team is unlikely to release him. They still owe him $3 million guaranteed and want to see how the situation plays out before making such a permanent decision. The team also expects Smith to receive a suspension from the league.

Aldon Smith charged with false report of bomb threat at LAX

(4/13/2014) 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith was charged with a false report of a bomb threat at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday, NFL Media reports.

The airport police issued a statement regarding the charges, according to the Sacramento Bee.

"At approximately 1400 hours, a 24-year-old Aldon Jacarus Ramon Smith, a resident of San Jose, California, was going through Terminal 1 screening where he made a comment indicating that he was in possession of a bomb. Los Angeles Airport Police made contact with him in the gate area where he became uncooperative. After conducting their investigation, L.A. Airport Police took suspect into custody and transported him to LAPD-Pacific division where he was booked for California Penal Code 148.1(a) - False report of a bomb threat."

Aldon Smith has monster performance in playoff loss

(1/19/2014) 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith made his impact felt on the first play of Sunday's NFC Championship game against the Seahawks.

Smith stripped Russell Wilson and recovered the loose ball, which led to a San Francisco field goal early in the opening period. He finished the game with four total tackles (two solo), a sack and a tackle for loss in a 23-17 victory.

Despite missing five games this season, Smith the year with a team-high 10.5 sacks (including the postseason).
