Seahawks show they have 'one of the best defenses ever'

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/2/2014) After the Seahawks dismantled Denver's high-powered offense, defensive end Michael Bennett summed up the performance: "Our defense is one of the best defenses ever," he said. "No offense can play with us."

The Seahawks DST opened the game with a safety when an errant snap went out of the end zone. The unit did not allow a first down in the first quarter. It forced four turnovers and scored twice -- on linebacker Malcolm Smith's 69-yard interception return and Percy Harvin's 87-yard kickoff return.

Seattle held Denver to 1.9 yards per carry and rattled Peyton Manning into his worst performance of the season. Smith, safety Kam Chancellor and middle linebacker Bobby Wagner shared the team lead with 10 tackles, and defensive end Chris Clemons registered the game's only sack.

Bobby Wagner a steady quarterback for Seattle's defense

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1/29/2014) It will be up to middle linebacker Bobby Wagner to make sure the Seahawks are in the right defense when Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning operates the hurry-up offense in the Super Bowl. “He’s someone we certainly count on to do a lot of stuff,” defensive coordinator Dan Quinn told ESPN.com, “not just from the attitude that he brings but making the calls.”

Wagner has played brilliantly down the stretch, including a 15-tackle effort in the NFC Championship Game. He has at least eight tackles in every game since the start of November.

Wagner sometimes get overlooked amid Seattle's defensive stars, but he had five sacks, six passes defensed and two interceptions in the regular season. Fundamentally sound, he rarely misses tackles.

“Bobby has really played well since the second half of the season,” coach Pete Carroll said, per ESPN.com. “He has just jumped on board of all of the commands of the defense and the calls and the adjustments that he has to make. He’s really playing fast. I think it’s just a natural process of how he’s grown and how this defense has grown.”
