Rookie LB Za'Darius Smith reminds Ravens of DL Pernell McPhee

(5/8/2015) Ravens rookie outside linebacker Za'Darius Smith had his first practice with the team Friday and comparisons to lineman Pernell McPhee, who left the Ravens for the Bears in the offseason, were immediately made, reports ESPN.com 

"[He has] the physicality, the heavy hands, the high motor," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "He has pass-rush ability even maybe more so than we saw from Pernell coming out. He has hips, and he can get around blocks. If he develops like Pernell did, we’re going to have something." 

Smith was drafted by the Ravens in the fourth round and on Friday inked a four-year deal with team worth $2.763 million.


Bears announce five-year deal with LB Pernell McPhee

(3/11/2015) The Bears announced they've signed former Ravens outside linebacker Pernell McPhee to a five-year deal. The contract is worth nearly $40 million, with nearly $16 million guaranteed, according to the Baltimore Sun.

McPhee, 26, had 7.5 sacks as a part-time player last season.

Report: OLB Pernell McPhee reaches deal with Bears

(3/9/2015) Free agent outside linebacker Pernell McPhee will sign with the Bears in a five-year deal worth nearly $40 million, including nearly $16 million guaranteed, reports the Baltimore Sun. McPhee, 26, has spent his entire four-year career with the Ravens.

Last season he racked up 7.5 sacks and a forced fumble to go with 27 tackles despite playing only half of the defensive snaps.

Teams cannot actually sign free agents until 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.


Giants interested in Jerry Hughes, focusing on defensive line

(3/8/2015) The Giants have expressed interest in impending free-agent defensive end Jerry Hughes and appear to be very interested in beeing up their pass rush, ESPN.com reports.

The Giants franchised defensive end Jasson Pierre-Paul but appear ready to add more talent to the defensive line once free agency opens Tuesday. The team has also been connected to Pernell McPhee and Brandon Graham, per the report.

The Giants have also expressed interest in safety Devin McCourty but expect him to be tough to sign.

(3/7/2015) The Cardinals are targeting impending free agent outside linebacker Pernell McPhee as a potential replacement for Darnell Dockett, who signed with the 49ers earlier this week, according to Dianna Marie Russini of NBC 4 in Washington.

Colts to target Ravens OLB Pernell McPhee in free agency

(2/25/2015) With Ravens outside linebacker Pernell McPhee likely to hit the free agent market this March, one team has already emerged as an interested party. 

According to CBSSports.com NFL Insider Jason La Canfora, the Colts are expected to target McPhee when the new league year begins. McPhee's camp is looking for a contract that pays him in the area of $8 million to $10 million per season. 

At Tuesday's state of the Ravens press conference, general manager Ozzie Newsome hinted that it would be near impossible to match what other teams are willing to pay McPhee. 

"We can't pay everybody market value," Newsome said.

McPhee totaled 7.5 sacks in 2014.

(2/24/2015) Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome isn't optimistic about the team's chances of re-signing defensive end Pernell McPhee

Addressing McPhee at his "state of the Ravens address", Tuesday, Newsome questioned how many players the Ravens would have to lose in order to afford the contract McPhee is hoping to receiver.  

"We can't pay everybody market value," Newsome said.

McPhee becomes a free agent in March, after a 7.5 sack season. He's believed to be seeking $8 million a year.  


Report: Ravens' Pernell McPhee set for big pay day in free agency

(2/22/2015) Ravens defensive end Pernell McPhee could be in for a huge contract this offseason, according to the Baltimore Sun.

McPhee, who totaled 27 tackles and 7 1/2 sacks in 2014, could get anywhere between $8 million to $10 million when free agency opens next month, according to the report.

The Colts, Falcons, Raiders and Browns have been mentioned as possible landing spots for McPhee.

He has only missed four games in the first four seasons of his career, totaling 92 tackles with 17 sacks.

(11/28/2014) The Ravens are quite healthy heading into their Sunday game against San Diego. The only maybe is wideout Michael Campanaro, who is questionable with a thigh ailment.

Linebackers Terrell Suggs (foot) and Pernell McPhee (shoulder) and tackle Jah Reid (hand) are probable.

McPhee had just one tackled in the game, as he took down Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill. He has nine tackles through five games.

The Ravens have no players as questionable, and defensive end Pernell McPhee is listed as probable with a knee injury.

(4/17/2013) The Carroll County Times reports the Ravens plan to experiment with defensive lineman Pernell McPhee as an outside pass rush linebacker. He'll play D-line as well but John Harbaugh wants to see how he'll do in that role. "He’s an outside linebacker that can play defensive end," Harbaugh said. "He’ll be a defensive end/pass rusher in our even fronts, in our pass-rush schemes."
