Falcons CB Desmond Trufant (shoulder) out of preseason opener

by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(8/13/2015) Falcons cornerback Desmond Trufant will not play in the team's preseason opener against the Titans on Friday as he deals with a shoulder strain, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Trufant injured his shoulder during practice Thursday and the Falcons coaching staff doesn't want to take any chances with re-injury.

"He's going to get treatment today and tomorrow," Falcons coach Dan Quinn said. "Then we are going to try and take it through tomorrow, but that (not playing him) is where we are leaning."

Falcons CB Desmond Trufant comfortable with new system

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(6/10/2015) Falcons cornerback Desmond Trufant has been praised both for his physical talent and football smarts. Both will be required for the new defense, which calls for far more press coverage.

Trufant isn't complaining. In fact, he believes it's right up his alley.

"I feel I can fit into any scheme, but I love what we've got going here," he told the team website. "We play aggressive, get hands on guys. They always want us to go after the ball so I couldn't ask for (anything) else. They just want us to stay on top, no seams, no posts, no big plays. Let them complete the checkdowns, but no explosive plays. Every call they want us to go after the ball, so that's what we're going to do."

The team's premier cornerback boasts the quickness and coverage ability to succeed in the new defense. But assistant head coach Raheem Morris is happier with his cerebral approach to the game.

"I'm more impressed with Trufant above the neck than anything," he said. "What he brings to the game, how smart he is, how detailed he is about his work, how good he wants to become."

Report: Falcons could line up Trufant on Browns' Gordon

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11/19/2014) The Falcons could line up cornerback Desmond Trufant one-on-one Sunday against Browns prolific wideout Josh Gordon, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Gordon is set to make his 2014 debut after serving a 10-game suspension.

Trufant has taken on the task lately of trying to shut down No. 1 receivers. He matched up against Carolina's Kelvin Benjamin last week.

Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan understands the need to focus on Gordon. "He's a very explosive player," Nolan said. "He's one of the top receivers in the league without question. Big. Strong. Fast. He's a very commanding player at the position."

Pro Football Focus ranks Trufant as the fourth-best cornerback in the NFL this season.
