Akers makes lone FG vs. Giants

News: 49ers K David Akers made all of his attempts in Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Giants. He converted his lone field goal and made two extra points in the 20-17 overtime loss. He connected from 25 yards in the fourth quarter.
Analysis: Akers had a career campaign in his first season with the 49ers as he made 44 field goals during the regular season, including going 7 for 9 from 50-plus yards. He also set the franchise's single-season scoring record and should be in for another productive year in 2012. Consider Akers a No. 1 Fantasy K on Draft Day.

Akers effectively busy again

News: San Francisco K David Akers connected on three field goals and three extra points during the 49ers' 36-32 victory over New Orleans in their NFC Divisional Playoff game on Saturday. Akers converted attempts from 25, 41 and 37 yards as he finished with three-plus field goals for the ninth time this season.
Analysis: Akers, San Francisco's most experienced playoff veteran whose 44 field goals set a single-season record, continued to serve as one of the team's top scorers. The 37-year-old has reached double figures in points in all but six of his games this season and should receive plenty of chances during the NFC Championship. Consider him a top option in Fantasy playoff formats and a No. 1 Fantasy K in 2012 drafts.

Akers scores with his arm

News: 49ers K David Akers continued his strong season with four extra points and a pair of field goals in a Week 17 win over the Rams. However, Akers put six more points on the board with a touchdown pass to WR Michael Crabtree on a fake field goal attempt in the waning seconds of the third quarter. The 13-yard play was the first touchdown pass of Akers' career. In addition to making field goals from 36 and 42 yards, Akers missed an attempt from 48 yards. He finished the regular season 44 of 52 in field goal tries.
Analysis: Part of Akers' success this year has been due to his team's difficulties in the red zone, and those woes could continue into the postseason. That, along with his accuracy from longer distances, makes Akers a viable start in postseason formats, at least once the 49ers are past their first-round bye.

David Akers

Akers breaks NFL record

News: 49ers K David Akers broke the record for most field goals in a single season in Week 16 against the Seahawks. Akers 40-yard make in the third quarter tied the record and his 39-yarder in the fourth moved into first place ahead of Neil Rackers. He finished with four field goals in the 19-17 victory and also made his lone field-goal attempt.
Analysis: Akers is now 42 for 47 in field-goal attempts on the season and has nailed at least two FGs in all but two games this season. The 49ers red-zone woes continue to give the veteran plenty of chances to kick each week and he has been able to take advantage of most of them thus far. Owners whose league runs through Week 17, should have no problems considering Akers a No. 1 Fantasy K next Sunday against the Rams.

Akers lands in record books

News: 49ers K David Akers set the franchise's single-season scoring record in Week 15 against the Steelers, breaking Jerry Rice's mark of 138 points set back in 1987. Akers tied the record with a 22-yard field goal in the first quarter before breaking it with on a 38-yarder in the second quarter. He also made both of his extra-point attempts to finish with seven points in the 20-3 victory.
Analysis: Akers is now 38 for 44 in field-goal attempts on the season and has nailed at least two FGs in all but two games this season. The 49ers red-zone woes continue to give the veteran plenty of chances to kick each week and he has been able to take advantage of most of them thus far. Fantasy owners should continue to ride Akers hot leg into the championship when the 49ers travel to Seattle to take on the Seahawks in Week 16.

Akers hits four more FGs

News: 49ers K David Akers made four of his five field-goal attempts in Week 14 against the Cardinals. Akers connected from 46-yards out in the first quarter before making a 27-yarder and a pair of 22-yarders in the 21-19 loss. His lone miss of the contest was from 50-yards in the second quarter. He also made his lone extra-point attempt to finish with 13 points.
Analysis: Akers broke his personal best of 33 FGs with his four makes on Sunday and now has 36 total field goals on the season. The 49ers have given the 37-year-old plenty of chances to kick this year and he hasn't disappointed thus far. Akers has now made four field goals in each of his last two contests, so Fantasy owners should continue and roll with him as a must-start Fantasy K heading into Week 15 against the Steelers.

Akers boots four FGs in Week 13

News: 49ers K David Akers had another productive performance in Week 13 against the Rams. He made all four of his field goal attempts and also converted two extra points in the 26-0 win. He made his field goals from distances of 20, 28, 34 and 36 yards.
Analysis: Akers is having a resurgent campaign in his first season in San Francisco and has made 32 field goals thus far. That matches his total from the last two seasons, and will tie his career mark with his next one. He should be able to do it next week against the Cardinals so continue to roll with Akers as a solid option in the majority of Fantasy leagues for Week 14.

Akers the 49ers' lone scorer

News: San Francisco K David Akers converted both field goals during the 49ers’ 16-6 loss to Baltimore in Week 12 on Thursday night. Akers booted a kick of 45 yards in the first quarter and also connected on a 52-yard attempt during the third quarter to account for the team's only scoring.
Analysis: Akers never made more than two field goals of 50 yards in any of his 12 seasons with Philadelphia. But with San Francisco this season, the veteran is a perfect 6 for 6 on kicks of 50 yards or more and is leading the NFL with 108 points. Former WR Jerry Rice holds the 49ers' single-season record with 138 points. Fantasy owners should continue to consider Akers a must-start in all formats for Week 13 against St. Louis.

Akers off in Week 11

News: San Francisco K David Akers missed one field goal from 49 yards out, and had two others blocked, en route to a 3 for 6 day. He connected from 22, 43, and 49 yards out, and was perfect on his two extra point tries.
Analysis: This was Akers' first game in which he missed multiple field goals since Week 4 at Philadelphia. He has been the beneficiary of a strong San Francisco offense in 2011, and should remain a starting Fantasy K in all leagues despite the rough start.

Akers on pace to break 49ers record

News: David Akers is on pace to break 49ers legend Jerry Rice’s single-season team record of 138 points, which he set in 1987 by scoring 23 touchdowns. “I want to make all my kicks, but if I end up breaking that they need to put an asterisk on it,” Akers said Wednesday. “You just don’t beat a Jerry Rice.”
Analysis: Akers is having a solid campaign in his first season in San Francisco and has made 23 of 25 field goals thus far. He is a perfect 5 for 5 from field goals of 50-plus yards and has benefited from the 49ers scoring more points this season. He is showing no signs of slowing down at age 36 so continue to view Akers as a solid Fantasy K in all leagues heading into Week 11 against the Cardinals.

Akers has another giant effort

News: San Francisco K David Akers converted four field goals and an extra point during the 49ers' 27-20 victory over the Giants in Week 10. Akers connected on kicks of 36, 52, 39 and 28 yards as he finished with four field goals for the second consecutive game.
Analysis: Akers continues to perform at a high level and has nailed his last 15 field-goal attempts. He also has converted four field goals in a game three times this season. Fantasy owners should keep him active in all formats for Week 11 against Arizona.

Akers has 52-yarder among 4 field goals

News: San Francisco K David Akers had a monster performance on Sunday in the Week 9 victory at Washington. Akers, formerly with the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFC East, had little trouble kicking in Washington as he finished the game 4 for 4 with a long of 52 yards. Akers totaled 13 points in the game as he added an extra points.
Analysis: Akers has really been one of the most consistent Fantasy kickers around this season as he's recorded at least six points in every game this year. Akers has been in double figures in scoring four times, including Week 9, and should continue to perform well in Week 10 against the Giants. New York gives up plenty of points and we believe San Francisco can score against the NFC East opponent. If you've been starting Akers in your Fantasy league weekly up until this point, there is no reason to change heading into Week 10.

Akers makes two FGs in Week 8

News: 49ers K David Akers made both of his field-goal attempts in Week 8 against the Browns. Akers connected on a 29-yard attempt in the first quarter before hitting from 26 yards out in the fourth. He also made both of his extra-point attempts, finishing with eight points.
Analysis: Akers is now 15 for 17 in field-goal attempts this season with a long of 55 yards. The 49ers have been among the league's highest-scoring teams this season, which no doubt has given him more opportunities for points. As long as San Francisco can keep scoring, Akers can be considered a low-end No. 1 Fantasy K. Continue to view him as such heading into Week 9 against the Redskins.

Akers makes another long kick

News: David Akers converted his fourth field goal of 50 yards or more in as many tries this season, as the 49ers defeated the Lions, 25-19, in Week 6. Akers' 55-yard kick at the end of the second quarter put the 49ers up, 12-10, at intermission. Akers also made field goals from 31 and 37 yards, and he converted both of his extra point attempts.
Analysis: The 49ers have been among the league's highest-scoring teams this season, and that has only helped to boost Akers' value. As long as his team keeps scoring, Akers is accurate enough to take advantage of the opportunities. However, with the 49ers getting a bye in Week 7, owners will need to find an alternative for the coming week. For the rest of the year, though, Akers can be started in most formats.

Akers productive vs. Bucs

News: 49ers K David Akers had a productive game in Week 5 against the Buccaneers. He made both of his field goals and converted six extra points in the 48-3 win. He made field goals from 28 and 37 yards.
Analysis: Akers has converted 10 of 12 field goals so far this season while going a perfect 16 for 16 in PATs. He has benefited from San Francisco being better on offense this season and should continue to be viewed as a viable option in the majority of Fantasy formats heading into Week 6 against the Lions.

Akers misses his first 2011 FGs

News: 49ers K David Akers didn't have a great performance Week 4, but he did have a happy return to Philadelphia as his new team beat his old team, 24-23. Akers missed a 44-yard field goal and had a 45-yard field goal blocked, but he hit from 37 yards out and finished with three extra points.
Analysis: Akers hits those two field goals and he has a pretty productive Fantasy day. He didn't, so it was an average performance. Akers came into the game hitting on his first seven field goals with the Niners and still remains a viable Fantasy kicker despite the change of scenery. The 49ers play the Bucs in Week 5.

Akers hits 300th career field goal

News: San Francisco 49ers kicker David Akers converted two field goals in Week 3 at Cincinnati, including the 300th of his NFL career. He was good on a 53-yarder in the team's 13-8 win, adding an extra point to finish with seven points in the game.
Analysis: Akers has been good on all seven of his field goal tries this season, including four in the opener. The 49ers offense is not as potent as what Akers enjoyed in his years with Philadelphia, but he remains just as consistent as he has been at any point in his career. Consider him a viable play in any 12-team league for his upcoming return to Philadelphia in Week 4.

Akers still perfect for San Fran

News: 49ers kicker David Akers is still perfect on the year as he hit his lone field goal and all three extra points on Sunday. San Francisco would end up losing the game, 27-24, to Dallas. Akers connected on a 55-yard attempt in the fourth quarter.
Analysis: Akers continues to show the teams that passed on him during the offseason they are missing out on a quality leg. Fantasy owners that have been upset with their kicker thus far may want to think about adding Akers. The veteran should be viewed as a low-end No. 1 kicking option heading into Week 3 when the 49ers face the Bengals.

Akers perfect in 49ers debut

News: San Francisco K David Akers provided a lot of points for the 49ers in Week 1 against the Seahawks. He converted all three of his extra-point attempts and nailed all four of his field goals. He hit from 27, 24, 31 and 18 yards in San Fran's 33-17 win.
Analysis: Akers signed with the 49ers in the offseason after he hit 84.2 percent of his field goals in 2010. With Dallas coming to town in Week 2, Fantasy owners should continue to view Akers as a low-end No. 1 kicker option.

Akers adjusting to Candlestick

News: Kicker David Akers, who has converted 81.9 percent of his field goals in his 12-year career, signed with the 49ers knowing his career percentage at Candlestick Park is just 69 percent. However, Akers said he is getting more comfortable figuring out the swirling winds inside the stadium as he is getting coached up by punter Andy Lee and former 49ers kicker Joe Nedney. "It's not like you're playing a round of golf and you get the layout of the course," Akers told The Sacramento Bee. "Each day's different, each course is different. I think your comfort level just kind of builds. That's what I was able to do at Lincoln (Financial Field). In a northwest wind I knew how (the ball) came off. If it was a southwest wind, I knew how it would come off. It'll take some learning, but I feel like we can figure it out."
Analysis: The Eagles didn't let Akers walk because he is getting up there in age or because he no longer can perform at a high level. It was a money issue. Akers hit 84.2 percent of his field goals in 2010 and has hit above 80 percent for three straight seasons. He will have some new hurdles to face with the 49ers, especially the fact San Francisco's offense isn't nearly as good as Philadelphia's, so consider Akers more of a low-end No. 1 Fantasy kicker on Draft Day.

Akers signs with San Francisco

News: Multiple sources report that five-time Pro Bowl kicker David Akers has agreed to a deal with the San Francisco 49ers, leaving the Eagles after 12 seasons. The 49ers can't announce the signing until Friday. Akers told the Associated Press it's for three years. Akers is coming off consecutive Pro Bowl seasons, and showed no signs of slowing down last year -- he set a career high with 23 touchbacks. But the Eagles drafted kicker Alex Henery in the fourth round, making Akers expendable.
Analysis: Akers knew of his fate in May, and it came into fruition as soon as the lockout ended. It didn't take him long to land another gig, though, as expected. Akers went on to set the franchise record for points, field goals, extra points, games played in the regular season and in the playoffs with Philly. He was selected to the NFL's All-Decade team for the 2000s, and only Morten Andersen (seven) and Jan Stenerud (six) have made more Pro Bowls. Fantasy owners should consider consider the reliable Akers to be a low-end No. 1 option on Draft Day with the 49ers, worth selecting with a late-round pick.

Akers accepts his fate

News: David Akers, who missed two key field goals in the team's playoff loss to Green Bay, had a dream about a month before the draft that the Eagles would pick a kicker. In the fourth round, that's exactly what happened as the Eagles selected Nebraska's Alex Henery. On that day, Akers was coaching his son's youth football team when his cell phone rang -- he got the news from his agent, reports The Sports Xchange. "Right now, I don't think I'm going to be back," he said to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "It's pretty much that when you see a kicker drafted high. The writing's on the wall."
Analysis: Akers added that he would be willing to work something out to stay with the Eagles, but Philadelphia drafted Henery to kick field goals, not punt or do only kickoffs. We'd be surprised to see Akers back with Philadelphia, but we would not be surprised to see him kick with another NFL team. He's bound to get a look from another squad once he's released from Philadelphia, and if it's with a team that can move the ball well, he will warrant Fantasy consideration. Until then, it's hands off.

Akers expects to leave Eagles

News: The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Eagles kicker David Akers doesn't expect to be back in Philadelphia after the team selected Alex Henery in the fourth round of the NFL draft. "Right now, I don't think I'm going to be back," Akers said. "It's pretty much that when you see a kicker drafted high. The writing's on the wall." Eagles coach Andy Reid declined to address Akers' future with the team after the draft. Reid had never drafted a kicker, mainly because Akers made it unnecessary. But the 36-year-old Akers is a free agent, and because of the NFL lockout, the free-agent market has yet to open. So the Eagles decided that it was time to add a young kicker. They had placed the transition tag on the kicker in February. That provision would have given the Eagles the right of first refusal if other teams tried to sign Akers. But he declined to sign the tag. "There's more to it than just the simplicity of 'signed it or didn't sign it,' " Akers said. "We don't know if there's even going to be a tag in the new collective bargaining agreement."
Analysis: If the Eagles decide to part ways with Akers as expected then he will land with a new team prior to the start of the 2011 season. Akers remains a quality kicker, and plenty of teams will line up for his services. Continue to monitor what happens with Akers, but as long as he plays in 2011 he will be considered a starting option. He will be worth a late-round pick on Draft Day.

David Akers

Akers out of a job?

News: The Eagles selected Nebraska kicker Alex Henery in the fourth round of April's draft, suggesting that Pro Bowl kicker David Akers is out of a job. Akers was designated with the transition tag earlier this offseason but apparently will not have the chance to sign it; the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Akers has been informed that he's out of a job but wouldn't comment on it. Henery made 68 of 75 field goals (90.6 percent) at Nebraska, and he also punted for the Huskers, but he didn't partake in kickoffs, which means he's on the Eagles to boot field goals and extra points above all else. Head coach Andy Reid wouldn't comment on his kickers other than to say that Henery was the best in football last season.
Analysis: The writing is on the wall: Henery will be the Eagles' kicker in 2011. But that doesn't mean that Akers will sit at home. Chances are a team will pick up Akers when he becomes available and he'll still be useful in Fantasy play. But until that happens, he's a tough choice to draft in Fantasy play. It also stinks that he won't kick for the Eagles, which means his opportunities might not be quite as plentiful.

Akers gets transition tag

News: The Eagles have placed a transition tag on kicker David Akers, severely limiting his free-agent movement. Akers is now guaranteed a one-year salary of the average of the 10 highest-paid players at his position, and the Eagles have the right to match any contract offer he receives from another team. However, unlike the franchise tag, the Eagles would not receive any compensation if they don't match another team's contract. The Akers move came as "a surprise and a disappointment," said agent Jerrold Colton, reports the Philadelphia Daily News. Colton acknowledged that talks toward a longer term deal during the 2010 season were not productive. "We were very far apart on financial terms and structure," Colton said.
Analysis: Akers finished 2010 as a Top 10 Fantasy kicker and should retain that title in 2011 given the explosiveness of the Eagles offense. Look his way with one of your last two picks in drafts.
