49ers get offensive contributions from role players

(10/5/2014) The 49ers got offensive contributions from several role players in their Week 5 win over the Chiefs. Among them, tight end Derek Carrier caught both his targets for 16 yards and fullback Bruce Miller had a 10-yard grab.

Wideout Bruce Ellington rushed once for zero yards and had a 1-yard catch. Tight end Vance McDonald was targeted twice without a catch.

Wideout Michael Crabtree (foot) and running back Frank Gore (back) head the list and are joined by safety Antoine Bethea (ankle), tight end Vance McDonald (knee), safety Eric Reid (hamstring), defensive tackle Tony Jerod-Eddie (shoulder), nose tackle Ian Williams (ankle) and punter Andy Lee (ankle).


Vernon Davis inactive against Chiefs

49ers release final Week 5 injury report

(10/3/2014) The 49ers listed center Marcus Martin (knee) as doubtful on the team's final injury report for Sunday's Week 5 game against the Chiefs.

Six 49ers were listed as questionable to play, including cornerback Tramaine Brock (toe), offensive tackle Anthony Davis (knee, ankle), tight ends Vernon Davis (back) and Vance McDonald (knee), safety Eric Reid (hamstring) and nose tackle Ian Williams (ankle).

Six additional players were listed as probable, including safety Antoine Bethea (ankle), wide receiver Michael Crabtree (foot), running back Frank Gore (back), punter Andy Lee (right ankle) and defensive ends Tony Jerod-Eddie (shoulder) and Justin Smith (not injury related).

Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald listed questionable for Week 4

(9/26/2014) 49ers tight ends Vernon Davis and Vance McDonald were both deemed questionable for Week 4 against Philadelphia.

Davis was a limited participant again on Friday because of injuries to his ankle and knee. Through the team's official website, head coach Jim Harbaugh said he remains "optimistic" that Davis will play, though he is expected to be a game time decision for Sunday.

McDonald was a limited participant in practice as well, but told Comcast SportsNet Bay Area that he's declared himself "ready" for Sunday's game. He could see a bigger role if Davis fails to suit up.

(9/19/2014) The 49ers have nine players listed on the injury report for Week 3. Center Marcus Martin, who's nursing an knee injury, was the only player ruled out for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

Deemed questionable are cornerback Tramaine Brock (toe), tackle Anthony Davis (hamstring), tight end Vernon Davis (ankle) and tight end Vance McDonald (knee).

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick (back), running back Carlos Hyde (calf), defensive end Justin Smith (not injury related) and tackle Joe Staley (knee) were ruled probable for Sunday.

(9/15/2014) The 49ers got contributions from a variety of players in their Week 2 loss to the Bears. Wideout Steve Johnson caught two of four targets for 26 yards, tight end Vance McDonald had a 9-yard reception and fullback Bruce Miller carried once for no gain.

Receiver Bruce Ellington was targeted once without a catch.

Both players were listed as probable on the injury report, so the news shouldn't come as a surprise. McDonald is dealing with a hamstring injury. Culliver has an ankle issue.

Tackle Anthony Davis and center Marcus Martin have been ruled out. This ends a streak of 64 consecutive starts for Davis. He's dealing with a hamstring issue.

Cornerback Chris Culliver and tight end Vance McDonald are considered probable. 

Wide receiver Michael Crabtree is questionable due to a calf injury. Crabtree has been insistent that he'll play despite the issue.


Pressure on Vance McDonald to produce

(2/11/2014) The 49ers are committed to a two-tight end offense but only got "real production" from Vernon Davis, reports the Sacramento Bee. So the pressure is on 2013 second-round pick Vance McDonald to "tap his potential in 2014," the report said.

McDonald finished the regular season with eight catches for 119 yards, failing to adequately replace Delanie Walker. McDonald played nearly half the team's offensive snaps and improved as a run blocker throughout the season, the report added.


Vance McDonald 'developing nicely'

(1/28/2014) 49ers tight end Vance McDonald, a second-round pick, finished his rookie year with eight catches for 119 yards. He ended up doing a lot of run-blocking.

Offensive coordinator Greg Roman liked what he saw from the 6-4, 267-pounder out of Rice. "He's getting a lot better without question," Roman told the team's website. "The nuances, all the little tricks of the trade, he’s starting to get a little bit more comfortable with. He’s developing nicely into the player that we really felt he would be. He’s been a very valuable asset for us this year.”


49ers receive little from role players

(1/20/2014) The 49ers received minor production offensively from role players in Sunday's 23-17 loss the Seahawks in the NFC Championship game.

Kendall Hunter finished as the team's second-leading rusher with 16 yards on three carries (5.3 yards per carry). Vance McDonald and Quinton Patton each finished with one grab. McDonald caught a 13-yard pass from Colin Kaepernick, and was not involved the rest of the way. Patton had a 2-yard reception in the second quarter.

Tight end Vance McDonald was targeted twice without making a catch. He stumbled on one route that would have gained about 20 yards.

(12/1/2013) 49ers tight end Vance McDonald suffered an ankle injury during Sunday's game against the Rams in Week 13. McDonald sustained the injury in the first quarter and was able to return in the second half. He was not involved in the passing game and was held without a target in a 23-13 victory.

49ers get little from role players

(11/26/2013) 49ers running backs Kendall Hunter and Anthony Dixon were both held under 15 yards on the ground during Monday's win over the Redskins in Week 12.

Hunter broke for a 4-yard run late in the fourth quarter for his longest gain of the night. He had eight carries for 12 yards (1.5 yards per carry). Dixon rushed for 13 yards on three carries.

Fellow running back LaMichael James was barely involved, as he failed to receive a carry in the running game. In the passing game, he finished without a catch despite being targeted once. Tight end Vance McDonald caught his only targeted pass from Colin Kaepernick for a 23-yard gain.

The 49ers will host the Rams in Week 13.
