Stroke forced linebacker Russell Allen to retire

(4/22/2014) Former Jaguars linebacker Russell Allen said he suffered a stroke in Week 15 of last season that forced him to retire.

Allen told Sports Illustrated that he collided with a Bills offensive lineman and begin to suffer some concussion-like symptoms such as seeing double. The next day MRI results concluded that he needed extensive testing. After three days of tests, doctors said that part of his brain had become inactive and that he'd be on blood-thinning medication for the rest of his life. 

Allen has been invited to return to the Jaguars and help the team off the field. He plans on coaching high school football in California.

(4/18/2014) On Thursday the Jaguars released veteran linebacker Russell Allen along with Will Pericak , D'Aundre Reed and Jabin Sambrano, ESPN reported. Allen was released with a failed physical designation, a sign that he might not quite be over the effects of a concussion suffered late last season.

(11/17/2013) Jaguars linebacker Paul Posluszny was ruled inactive Week 11 vs. Arizona because of a concussion. Posluszny, who came in as questionable, was replaced in the starting lineup by Russell Allen, who was replaced by John Lotulelei at outside linebacker.

Jaguars defense getting healthy

(10/20/2013) Jaguars linebacker Russell Allen and defensive linemen Andre Branch and Roy Miller are all active for the Week 7 game on Sunday at home against San Diego. All three defensive players were listed on the injury report as probable to play in the game with various injuries. Allen has a ribs issue, Branch is dealing with a knee and Miller a shoulder. All will play through the pain against the Chargers.

(9/29/2013) Jaguars linebacker Russell Allen recorded not only his first sack of the season, but the first full sack of his career Week 4 against the Colts. He also had seven tackles, including five solo.

Allen, who had 131 tackles a year ago, has only 19 in four games this season.

(7/17/2013) The Jaguars starting linebackers heading into training camp are projected to be Paul Posluszny in the middle with Geno Hayes and Russell Allen on the outside, reports the Florida Times-Union.

"Certainly it’s a real plus that Paul, Russell and Geno have a good amount of experience," linebackers coach Mark Duffner said.
