Buster Skrine ditches hard cast for soft cast Thursday

(8/29/2014) Browns cornerback Buster Skrine is no longer wearing a hard cast on his right arm and hand, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Skrine is just 10 days removed from thumb surgery and is wearing a soft cast. He is listed as week to week, leaving his status up in the air for Week 1 against Pittsburgh.

Browns unveil lengthy inactives for third preseason game

(8/23/2014) The Browns have a lengthy list of players sidelined for Saturday's preseason game against the Rams, as a result of a slew of injuries in recent weeks.

Defensive backs Buster Skrine (thumb) and Joe Haden (foot), and wide receiver Nate Burleson (hamstring) headline the list. Also among the inactives are: running back Edwin Baker (hamstring), defensive backs Pierre Desir (knee), Isaiah Trufant (knee), T.J. Heath (hip) and K'Waun Williams (hamstring), linebackers Eric Martin (concussion), Darius Eubanks (shoulder) and Keith Pough (ankle), defensive lineman Desmond Bryant (wrist), tight end Martell Webb (groin) and offensive linemen Michael Bowie (shoulder), Randall Harris (knee) and Nick McDonald (wrist). 


Buster Skrine undergoes thumb surgery Monday

(8/18/2014) Browns cornerback Buster Skrine underwent thumb surgery Monday and is week to week, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

“I’m not sure how long he’ll be, but we think he should be available for the opener," coach Mike Pettine said Saturday. "He injured his thumb, but we’re confident that he should be ready to go for Pittsburgh."

Skrine's absence opens the door for rookie first-round pick Justin Gilbert to draw the start opposite Joe Haden Monday night.

Skrine, who sustained the injury in Friday practice, has been battling first-round pick Justin Gilbert for a starting spot, but is more likely to open the season as the top slot corner if deemed healthy.

(11/29/2013) Three Browns have been designated as questionable for Sunday against Jacksonville, but none are starters. They are offensive lineman Martin Wallace (illness), tight end MarQueis Gray (hamstring) and defensive lineman Armonty Bryant (back).

The probables are wide receiver Josh Cooper (illness), cornerback Buster Skrine (ribs), tackle Mitchell Schwartz (toe), running back Willis McGahee (knee), punter Spencer Lanning (knee) and linebacker Paul Kruger (finger).


One of three injured Browns returns to practice on Wednesday

(11/27/2013) One key defensive starter is set to practice Wednesday for the Browns, the Cleveland Plain Dealer has reported. Cornerback Buster Skrine (ribs) is ready to roll, but linebacker Craig Robertson (knee) is out.

Also not practicing will be linebacker Tank Carder (shoulder), who filled in for Robertson in Week 12 before sustaining his injury. If Carder and Robertson can't play Sunday against Jacksonville, Darius Eubanks will start.

(10/4/2013) Browns defensive back Buster Skrine had another productive game in Week 5 against the Bills, a 37-24 win.

Skrine racked up six tackles -- all solo -- and picked up his first career sack. Skrine has 28 tackles through five games, putting him on pace for his second 80-plus tackle season.

(9/29/2013) Browns defensive back Buster Skrine picked off his first pass of the season in Week 4, in a 17-6 win over the Bengals.

Skrine picked off Andy Dalton late in the fourth quarter, with the Bengals driving and attempting to mount a comeback. He added three pass defenses and two tackles in the game.

Skrine has 22 tackles and seven passes defended through the first four games of the season. Sunday's was his first interception since his rookie season in 2011.

But in the Week 3 win over Minnesota, Skrine stood tall, breaking up two potential touchdown passes and making a team-high nine tackles. “I’m proud of Buster, I’m proud of the way he competes,” safety T.J. Ward told the Plain Dealer. “Buster gets singled out some times, but he is the epitome of scrappy.”


Browns defenders stat in Week 2 loss

(9/16/2013) Browns cornerback Buster Skrine led the defense with a team-high nine tackles (seven solo) Week 2 at Baltimore. He was part of a defensive effort that shut out Baltimore in the first half, but the Ravens still emerged with a 14-6 win.

Linebacker D'Qwell Jackson had eight tackles (four solo), as did free safety Tashaun Gipson (four solo) and defensive lineman Jabaal Sheard (three solo). Sheard had 1/2 sack, as did defensive lineman Desmond Bryant, who finished with five tackles (one solo).

Browns safety T.J. Ward finished with four tackles (two solo) and cornerback Joe Haden, who spent most of the afternoon shadowing Ravens receiver Torrey Smity, had three solo tackles and one pass defense.

(9/6/2013) Browns starting cornerback Buster Skrine might not start in Week 1 if his absence from practice is any indication. Skrine (shoulder) is on the stationery bike, according to the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram.

If Skrine can't play, the nod would likely go to Chris Owens, who started just 12 of the 58 games in which he played for Atlanta before signing with the Browns during the offseason.

The possible loss of Skrine for the game Sunday against Miami would weaken a Cleveland secondary that already lacks depth.

(9/5/2013) Browns second-year cornerback Buster Skrine had just earned the starting job, but his status for Sunday has been thrown up in the air with a shoulder injury, according to the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram. It is believed he hurt his shoulder in practice on Thursday.

The Browns are already short at that position with Chris Owens still recovering from a foot injury. Their only other option is rookie third-round pick Leon McFadden, who is still struggling to get up to speed at the NFL level.

Skrine and Chris Owens are locked in a fight to start alongside Joe Haden. Ogbonnaya is battling with Brandon Jackson to be the backup behind Trent Richardson.

The Browns are resting nearly all their starters aganst the Bears.

(8/24/2013) The continued absence of Chris Owens (foot) gives Buster Skrine a leg up on the Browns' starting cornerback job alongside Joe Haden. Owens will miss his second straight preseason game Saturday night in Indianapolis.

The 5-foot-9 Skrine struggled mightily on the outside last year. He was flagged often for pass interference and gave up several big plays, but his coaches and teammates praised him for his plucky style and he has performed better in this preseason.
