Packers safety rotation could change in preseason

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8/8/2014) Packers defensive back Morgan Burnett will sit out Saturday's preseason opener against the Titans, reports ESPN.com Friday.

The report also indicates that there is a chance Burnett can lose his starting job, with rookie Ha Ha Clinton-Dix expected to step in while Burnett is out. Micah Hyde is also making a transition from cornerback and has reportedly impressed coaches. Coach Mike McCarthy did note that he considers Burnett a starter, but that doesn't mean he will dominate the playing time.

"We don't get caught on 11 players, especially [when] the emphasis for our whole defense is to play more players," McCarthy said.

Mike McCarthy wants to see more of Micah Hyde

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/25/2014) Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he wants defensive back Micah Hyde on the field all the time. As a rookie Hyde served as the No. 3 corner and made 55 tackles, adding two passes defended and a forced fumble.

"As far as Micah Hyde, I’m going to say it again, make sure we’re clear: Micah Hyde deserves the opportunity to be an every-down player on our defense," McCarthy said, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "And as we go into 2014, that’s our responsibility as a coaching staff to create those competitive opportunities for him to get that done.

"I got to a point in the season where Micah was standing on the sidelines too much. He’s a good football player and I thought he deserved the opportunity to compete to play. And it’s tough to do when you’re a rookie because you get into camp and you’re trying to build packages. … We’re going to give Micah the opportunity to play on all three downs – whether that’s corner, nickel, dime, safety, that’s the versatility I think he brings to our football team."

Micah Hyde might play safety, too

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/26/2014) Packers cornerback Micah Hyde could move to safety in some personnel groupings, enabling him to stay on the field all three downs, reports ESPN.com. "Micah is to me a multiple-position player," coach Mike McCarthy said at the NFL scouting combine.

"I'd like to see Micah compete to play all three downs on defense, so if there's a personnel group that he has to play safety, yeah that's an option."

Hyde served as the third corner as a rookie, making 55 tackles, defending two passes and forcing a fumble.

Safety is Green Bay's weakest link

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/5/2014) Packers starting safeties Morgan Burnett and M.D. Jennings combined for zero interceptions last season, the first time that's happened in Green Bay since at least the 1950s, reports the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Every other NFL team got an interception from a safety on its roster.

"We just didn't get it done and I don't think that was a lack of ability, because the ability is there," safeties coach Darren Perry told the paper. "We just have to make sure we're consistent."

Burnett led the team with three fumble recoveries, but also paced the Packers with 17 missed tackles. Coach Mike McCarthy said immediately after the season that he wants more "impact players" on defense.

Green Bay could give a longer look to Sean Richardson or Micah Hyde, or address the safety position through free agency and the draft.

Six injured Packers players cleared to play Week 12

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/24/2013) Packers center Evan Dietrich-Smith (knee), cornerback Micah Hyde (groin), linebacker Clay Matthews (thumb), linebacker Andy Mulumba (ankle), defensive end Mike Neal (abdomen) and defensive tackle Ryan Pickett (knee) were all cleared to play Week 12 vs. Minnesota. All six players were listed as probable.

Five Packers listed as probable

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(11/22/2013) Packers OL Evan Dietrich-Smith, CB Micah Hyde, LB Clay Matthews, LB Andy Mulumba and LB Mike Neal are probable Week 12 against the Vikings.

Matthews and Mulumba were able to practice in full Thursday. Neal and Smith were limited in practice Thursday. Hyde was unable to practice Thursday and Friday due to a groin injury.

Packers DST delivers again

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(10/28/2013) The Packers DST scored double-digit Fantasy points for the fifth straight time in Week 8. Micah Hyde's 93-yard punt return for a touchdown -- the unit's second score this season - highlighted the performance.

The punt-return score tied for fourth-longest in team history.

Green Bay sacked Minnesota's Christian Ponder three times and allowed only four completions to wide receivers. The Packers did not force a turnover, but they held the Vikings to 243 total yards.

The Packers DST will look to stay hot Week 9 vs. Chicago.

Micah Hyde ready to return punts

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10/18/2013) Packers cornerback Micah Hyde will be the team's new punt returner with Randall Cobb out, according to ESPN.

Hyde filled in at the position once Cobb left during the Ravens game. Hyde received high praise from head coach Mike McCarthy. "I think he’s about as natural of a returner as far as handling the football that I’ve seen coming out of college," McCarthy said.

Hyde also has 10 tackles and one sack in five games.

Micah Hyde nets first career sack

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/14/2013) Packers rookie cornerback Micah Hyde had the best game of his young career Week 6 at Baltimore. He totaled the first sack of his career, while forcing one fumble and totaling six sacks (five solo).

Hyde has 13 tackles (10 solo) through five games.
