Report: Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict to appeal $25K fine

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/16/2014) Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict is appealing his $25,000 fine from the league for twisting the ankles of Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and tight end Greg Olsen as they laid on the ground after scoring touchdowns on Sunday.

Burfict has been warned that he's considered a repeat offender, which results in escalating discipline, a league source told ESPN. That could result in him being called into the league office after his next offense. He has had a history of personal fouls, including eight unnecessary roughness calls in 2013 alone. Despite having played in just one full game this year, he is tied for the team lead in penalties.

Report: Vontaze Burfict fined for twisting ankles of Newton, Olsen

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/15/2014) Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict will be fined $25,000 for twisting the ankles of Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and tight end Greg Olsen following video review of Sunday's game, according to ProFootballTalk.com, ESPN and NFL.com. Burfict will be summoned to the league office for his next infraction, according to ESPN.

Burfict was not penalized during Sunday's game for his actions, which came after Newton and Olsen recorded touchdowns in the second half. Though on Monday, Olsen called for league action against Burfict.

"In instances like that that are so clearly premeditated, that he had in his mind that if he had those opportunities that he was going to try to attack guys’ legs, but guys who are coming off ankle problems specifically, there’s no room for it," Olsen said Monday, per The Charlotte Observer. "And I think the punishment needs to go beyond a fine. Guys like that don’t learn from that stuff. He’s been fined 100 times for head-hunting, and he did it to (receiver) Kelvin (Benjamin) again. You watch the film; it’s just what he is."
