Longwell kicks four XPs

News: Seahawks kicker Ryan Longwell managed four extra points during a 30-28 Divisional Playoff loss Sunday at Atlanta. He attempted no field goals.
Analysis: Longwell was signed during the week after Seattle placed regular kicker Steven Hauschka on injured reserve with a calf injury. Longwell will probably have to find work again in 2013, so don't plan on drafting him in Fantasy at this time.

Longwell now starting

News: The Seahawks have placed kicker Steven Hauschka on injured reserve and signed kicker Ryan Longwell, the team announced Wednesday. Hauschka converted 24 of 27 field goals and 46 of 48 extra points this season and set the postseason franchise-mark with three field goals made in the NFC Wild Card game at Washington while kicking with an injured calf. Longwell last kicked with the Vikings in 2011. He did not play in the NFL this season.
Analysis: If available, Longwell can be considered an option in Playoff Challenge leagues. Seattle plays at Atlanta in the Division round, and Longwell could play at a high level like Hauschka did against the Redskins.

Longwell inks with Seattle

News: The Seahawks have signed veteran placekicker Ryan Longwell Wednesday after working out with the team Tuesday, according to ESPN.com. The Seahawks may be without the Steven Hauschka Sunday against the Falcons, after suffering a calf injury last week at Washington.
Analysis: It seems as if the Seahawks were convinced by Longwell's tryout. The 38-year-old has not played this season after being released by the Vikings in May. At this point, it is uncertain who will take the kicking duties during Seattle's playoff game against at Atlanta, so we'll keep an eye on that moving forward. Last week, the Seahawks used Hauschka for field goal duties and punter Jon Ryan for kickoffs. If he earns the spot start, then he'll gain marginal value in all Playoff Challenge formats.

Longwell booted for Walsh

News: The Vikings have released veteran placekicker Ryan Longwell, who had three years remaining on his contract. The 37-year-old veteran of 15 seasons, including six with the Vikings, saw his job become tenuous when the team selected Georgia kicker Blair Walsh in the sixth round, and even more so when coach Leslie Frazier said last week keeping two kickers was "not in the thinking right now."
Analysis: Walsh is considered a reliable mid-range kicker who is not afraid to tee it up from 60-plus yards. But he hit 21 of 35 field goal attempts (60 pct.) in 2011 while setting an NCAA record with at least one field goal in 45 games in his career. It's tough to take a shot on Walsh knowing he hit just 60 percent of his kicks in school, and even tougher knowing that the Vikings' offense isn't expected to put him in position to kick a ton of field goals. We wouldn't take Walsh with a pick in Fantasy and wouldn't obviously take Longwell until he lands somewhere (if he lands somewhere).

Longwell faces competition

News: The Vikings picked Georgia placekicker Blair Walsh with a sixth-round pick, and he's expected to battle Ryan Longwell for the starting job in camp.
Analysis: Longwell made more field goals in 2011 than in 2010 but connected on fewer kicks overall, converting just 78.6 of his attempts. The Vikings offense is expected to be about as good as it was toward the end of last year, which means whoever wins the kicking battle between Longwell and Walsh will have some opportunities to boot field goals, but not as many as other kickers around the league. We wouldn't draft either kicker.

Longwell gets two more FGs

News: Vikings K Ryan Longwell kicked two field goals for the second straight game Week 17 against the Bears, connecting on a 26-yarder in the first quarter and another 26-yarder in the second quarter. He also had an extra point. He did, however, have a 48-yard field goal attempt blocked by DL Julius Peppers in the second quarter.
Analysis: Longwell finished the season about as well as he could have considering the state of the Vikings offense, which was led by rookie QB Christian Ponder and was without star RB Adrian Peterson. He's still a good enough kicker to serve as a No. 1 Fantasy option, but he'll need a better supporting cast to get drafted as such in 2012.

Longwell misses FG, PAT

News: Vikings K Ryan Longwell recorded nine points in the Week 16 win at Washington on Saturday. Longwell missed a FG in the game, but made good on two to finish 2 for 3 with a long of 36 yards. Longwell went 3 for 4 on PATs to finish with his nine points. Clearly, had it not been for the missed PAT and field goal, Longwell could have performed even better in the Week 16 victory.
Analysis: Longwell missed his first field goal since since Week 10 at Green Bay, though he missed a PAT as well on Saturday. The bad news is that he's only hit seven field goals and all of those came in just three games since. The Vikings don't score a whole lot of points and that translates into limited Fantasy production for Longwell. He has only scored in double figures in Fantasy production twice since Week 6 of the season, the last time he faced his Week 17 opponents, the Bears. Longwell went 1 for 2 against the Bears Week 6 and finished with four points. Longwell is more of a No. 2 Fantasy K for Week 17.

Longwell perfect in Week 15

News: Minnesota K Ryan Longwell connected on two field goals and a pair of extra points during the Vikings' 42-20 loss to New Orleans in Week 15. Longwell converted field-goal attempts of 44 yards and 49 yards -- the second time this year he's booted two kicks of 40-plus yards.
Analysis: Longwell's production has been severely limited by Minnesota's poor offense this season as he had been held without a field-goal attempt in three of his previous four games entering Sunday. Consider him a low-end option against Washington in Week 16.

Vikes barely need Longwell

News: For third time over the last four games, Vikings K Ryan Longwell did not have any field goal attempts, as he had little to do in a Week 14 loss to the Lions. Longwell did convert all four of his extra-point attempts.
Analysis: It's just as well that Longwell isn't getting chances to kick field goals, as he has made just 16 of the 20 attempts that he has been provided this season. Between the questionable accuracy and the lack of scoring opportunities, owners should avoid Longwell outside of deeper leagues.

Longwell busy in Week 13

News: Minnesota K Ryan Longwell booted three field goals and three extra points during the Vikings' 35-32 loss to Denver in Week 13. Longwell connected on kicks of 40, 25 and 39 yards as he finished with three field goals for the first time since Week 3 against Detroit.
Analysis: Longwell halted a two-game stretch in which he did not attempt a field goal as he topped double digits in Fantasy points for only the third time this year. He remains a shaky option because of Minnesota's unreliable offense and should be viewed as a low-end kicker in Week 14 at Detroit.

Longwell again without field goal

News: Vikings K Ryan Longwell went without a field goal for the third straight game Week 12 at Atlanta, finishing with two extra points. He has attempted only one field goal during the three-game drought.
Analysis: Longwell had at least one field goal in each of the Vikings' first eight games, but clearly the offense isn't doing much for him right now. That doesn't figure to change this year with rookie QB Christian Ponder still learning the ropes. Longwell remains just a low-end Fantasy option for Week 13 against the Broncos.

No field goals for Longwell

News: Vikings K Ryan Longwell, who had just one point Week 10 at Green Bay, again went without a field goal Week 11 against the Raiders. He had three extra points, giving him a combined 10 points over his last three games. Longwell did line up for a field goal in the second quarter, but holder Chris Kluwe picked up the ball when it was clear the attempt would have been blocked.
Analysis: Longwell has scored in double digits twice this season, but his production is inconsistent with a rookie quarterback leading the Vikings offense. He's no more than a No. 2 Fantasy K.

Longwell misses lone attempt

News: Vikings K Ryan Longwell missed his long field-goal attempt in Week 10 against the Packers. Longwell was short on a 52-yarder kicked into the wind in the first quarter. He did make his lone extra-point attempt, but finished with just one point in the 45-7 defeat.
Analysis: Longwell had made 10 straight attempts from 50-yards or more prior to his miss on Monday night, although he is still 13 for 17 on the season. However, the Vikings are really struggling to put points on the board right now, which is limiting his chances. Consider Longwell a low-end Fantasy option heading into Week 11 against the Raiders.

Longwell redeems himself

News: Ryan Longwell's Week 8 got off to a poor start, as he missed a 45-yard field goal attempt within the first two minutes of the game against the Panthers. However, Longwell went from goat to hero, when he converted a 31-yard attempt in the fourth quarter, which proved to be the game-winning score in a 24-21 contest. Longwell also converted all three of his extra point attempts.
Analysis: Longwell is reasonably accurate, but the Vikings are not among the league's highest-scoring teams. He is merely a low-end kicking option in Fantasy, and he needs to be avoided during the Vikings' bye in Week 9.

Longwell perfect in Week 7

News: Vikings K Ryan Longwell had a productive outing in Week 7 against the Packers. He made both of his field goal attempts and converted three extra points in the 33-27 loss. He made his field goals from 46 and 52 yards.
Analysis: Longwell has now made both of his attempts from 50-plus yards this season and is 12 for 14 overall in field goals. The Vikings might be able to put up more points with QB Christian Ponder at the helm, which would only help Longwell's Fantasy value going forward. Heading into Week 8 against the Panthers, continue to view the 37-year-old as a low-end Fantasy K.

Longwell moves on from misses

News: Minnesota K Ryan Longwell led the NFL in field goal percentage last season. He’s one of the most accurate kickers in league history. So it’s always strange to see Longwell miss, which happened to the Vikings in each of the past two games. Neither kick had an impact on the outcome, but watching the ball sail wide of the goal post is never a pleasant sight for the 15-year veteran. “It’s no fun,” Longwell said this week as Minnesota prepares for an NFC North showdown with Green Bay in Week 7.
Analysis: Longwell has accounted for more points than any other player during his 15 years in the league, and his field goal percentage since 2009 is second only to Houston's Neil Rackers. “Given the career and the success he’s had in the NFL, you don’t panic,” special teams coordinator Mike Priefer said. “You just try to figure out what you think might have gone wrong, and then you go from there.” The Vikings appear to be content letting Longwell work past his struggles, but he won't get many scoring opportunities with Minnesota's poor offense. Consider him a low-end option for Week 7.

Longwell stumbles in Week 6

News: Minnesota kicker Ryan Longwell hit his only extra-point attempt on Sunday against Chicago, but would go 1-for-2 in field goal tries. He nailed a 37-yarder, but missed from 38 yards in Week 6. The Vikings would lose the game, 39-10.
Analysis: Longwell and the Vikings struggled in Week 6 and heading into Week 7 the task doesn't get any easier. Minnesota hosts Green Bay next Sunday, a team that has a high-powered offense. The Vikings will have trouble keeping up, but Longwell may get some chances to kick some field goals. At this time, Longwell is merely a low-end kicking option, best left as a bye-week replacement.

Longwell nails 53-yard field goal

News: Minnesota K Ryan Longwell helped the team earn its first win of the season on Sunday of Week 5 against Arizona. Longwell did miss a field goal in the game, but he connected from 53 yards out as well. Longwell went 2 for 3 on field goals and added four extra points for a total of 10 points scored on the game.
Analysis: The problem for Longwell this season has been kicking for a team that has been unable to put up a whole lot of offense. Longwell does have two games in double digits in scoring and his missed field goal Week 5 was his first of the year for the Vikings. That said, heading into Week 6 at Chicago, we're not sure the Vikings will be able to put up a whole lot of points. If Longwell has been your Fantasy starter week in and week out, there is no reason to sit him for the Week 6 game.

Not much work for Longwell

News: Vikings K Ryan Longwell had a quiet day in his Week 4 game against the Chiefs. Longwell didn't get many opportunities, but he was perfect in the 22-17 loss. He converted his only field goal attempt, which was for 33 yards, and he also was good on both of his extra point attempts.
Analysis: Longwell has been a decent low-end option in Fantasy this year, though his offense blew an opportunity to give him some work against a struggling Chiefs defense. The Vikings will face the Cardinals in Week 5, and that provides Longwell with another good chance at racking up some points.

Longwell gets into double figures

News: Minnesota K Ryan Longwell had a solid afternoon in the Week 3 overtime loss to the Lions. Longwell connected for three field goals with a long of 49 yards as he went 3 for 3 in the game. He added two extra points and finished with 11 points total on the Week 3 game Sunday.
Analysis: The Vikings showed the ability to move the ball on Sunday of Week 3, but seemed to get stopped deep in the other team's territory plenty. This offense has its issues, but that could mean solid games for Longwell week in and week out. Longwell continued to show he's one of the more consistent kickers in the NFL in the Week 3 game, and the Vikings should have little trouble scoring points in Week 4 at Kansas City. Against the Chiefs, Longwell can be starting in all Fantasy leagues.

Longwell scores eight in loss

News: Minnesota K Ryan Longwell did all he was asked to do Week 2 against the Buccaneers. He made good on both of the extra points he tried on the afternoon and he made a pair of field goals (from 22, 29 yards out) on the way to scoring eight points in the loss.
Analysis: Longwell has been solid for a long time, and he has looked as much in 2011 thus far. Fantasy owners should not worry about his production going forward, especially with the offense showing early life on Sunday. Longwell is good enough to be considered a low-end option across the board.

Longwell perfect in opener

News: Minnesota K Ryan Longwell converted his lone field-goal attempt and a pair of extra points during the Vikings' 24-17 loss to San Diego in Week 1. Longwell registered all of his points in the first half and connected on a 33-yard field goal in the second quarter.
Analysis: Longwell has been one of the most accurate kickers in the NFL but he's unlikely to line up for many chances this season. The 37-year-old was just 17 for 18 in field-goal attempts last season and notched his fewest extra points since 2006. Consider him a low-end option in Week 2.

Longwell stays put in Minnesota

News: Vikings K Ryan Longwell was able to reach an agreement with the Vikings on Wednesday. The Star Tribune reports that the four-year deal is worth a reported $12 million, with $3.5 million guaranteed. Longwell's accuracy has improved in each of the last two seasons.
Analysis: Longwell expressed publicly that he "wouldn't mind going back" to the Vikings, and that's exactly what happened. He has been one of the more reliable K options in the NFL over the last two seasons, with 43 made kicks in 46 attempts over the past two seasons. Even at age 37, Longwell remains one of the top legs in all of football, and we see him as a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option. He should either be drafted with a final-round pick in all leagues or used as a bye-week replacement during the season.

Longwell would like return to Vikes

News: According to ESPN.com, kicker Ryan Longwell will be a free agent once the lockout ends, but he might not return to the Vikings. Longwell said during a radio interview that he intends to play in 2011 and said he "wouldn't mind going back" to the Vikings. Asked if he would consider returning to Green Bay if Packers place-kicker Mason Crosby moves on in free agency, Longwell laughed and said: "You never say never. You just don't know." Perhaps the Vikings will pursue Longwell once free agency begins. But it will be hard to replace him since he's made 43 of 46 attempts over the past two seasons. "I still feel like I'm very strong and very accurate," Longwell said. "And I still feel like I'm a definite asset in the locker room after what we've been through in Minnesota the last few years."
Analysis: Keep an eye on where Longwell ends up, but we expect him to return to Minnesota. He should be considered a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option, and he should either be drafted with a final-round pick in all leagues or used as a bye-week replacement during the season.

Longwell has rare multi-FG game

News: Vikings K Ryan Longwell kicked a pair of field goals and one extra point in Week 17 against the Lions. Longwell made both of his field goals in the fourth quarter. He hit from 27 and 48 yards. It was his first multi field-goal game since Week 10.
Analysis: Longwell attempted more than one field goal just three times in 2010. That was definitely an indication of how inconsistent the Vikings offense was this season. Longwell is usually one of the most reliable Fantasy kickers available and he could get back to that level in 2011, if the Vikings make the right moves in the offseason to improve their offense. Longwell will probably be a viable Fantasy option heading into next season.
