Panthers got 'everything they hoped for' in Star Lotulelei

(1/29/2014) The Panthers drafted defensive tackle Star Lotulelei 14th overall last April and got "everything they hoped for," according to the team's website. The 6-2, 315-pound rookie helped Carolina improve from 14th in run defense (110.1 yards allowed per game) to second in 2013 (86.9).

He started all 16 regular-season games, getting 47 tackles, three sacks and 11 quarterback pressures. In the playoff loss to San Francisco, Lotulelei made six tackles, one for loss.


Panthers defenders shine in shutout win Week 3

(9/23/2013) The Panthers tied a franchise record with seven sacks during a 38-0 win Week 3 vs. N.Y. Giants. Greg Hardy led the charge with three sacks, but Thomas Davis, Charles Johnson, Kawann Short and Star Lotulelei each had one.

Davis finished with five tackles (two solo), Johnson had four tackles (two solo) and three quarterback hits, Short had four tackles (two solo) and Lotulelei had two tackles (one solo).

Robert Lester and Melvin White each had an interception. Lester had five tackles (three solo), and White finished with two solo tackles and also forced a fumble.

Linebacker Luke Kuechly was second on the team with six tackles (one solo), which trailed Hardy's team-high eight tackles.


Coach: Star Lotulelei has 'come a long way'

(6/19/2013) Panthers coach Ron Rivera says rookie defensive tackle Star Lotulelei has "come a long way" in using his hands to get off his blocks since being drafted by the team in April. Lotulelei was in good shape for minicamp and was on the field a lot during the practice sessions, according to the Charlotte Observer

(4/25/2013) Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei slipped right into the Panthers' claws with the 14th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. He figures to immediately slide into the defensive line and help the Panthers' run defense and pass rush. Carolina ranked 14th against the run last season.

Rang: Lotulelei considered healthy

(4/5/2013) NFLDraftScout/CBSSports.com contributor Rob Rang reports Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei has passed a number of tests on his heart and is considered healthy for football. An echocardiogram performed at the combine showed Lotulelei had a heart condition but since then he's passed "at least 10 tests, including two Cardiac MRIs, the gold standard of medical testing of the human heart."

(4/2/2013) The Salt Lake Tribune reports Utah defensive lineman Star Lotulelei's heart is fine, welcomed news after having a slight issue with it at the NFL combine. Utah physician Dave Petron announced Lotulelei has "no evidence of dysfunction," and that tests found his heart function performed "consistently with that of highly trained athletes."

(2/25/2013) Utah defensive lineman Star Lotulelei, a top prospect in the NFL draft, reportedly has a heart condition that kept him out of the NFL combine. An echocardiogram performed at the combine showed Lotulelei's issue, forcing him to wait to work out for NFL coaches and scouts. Considered by many to be a Top 10 talent, Lotulelei will seek a second opinion while planning for his pro day on March 20.
