(9/11/2013) Oakland tight end David Ausberry was slated to start this season, but a shoulder injury sustained in the preseason still has him sidelined. He again missed practice on Wednesday. Ausberry, however, does seem to be making progress. He has ditched the sling he was wearing last week to protect his injured shoulder, according to the Contra Costa Times.

The Raiders received decent production from fellow tight ends Jeron Mastrud and Mychal Rivera in their loss Sunday at Indianapolis. They combined for three catches for 67 yards.

Raiders search for a tight end

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/31/2013) With Brandon Myers gone to the Giants after making 79 catches last season, the Raiders are scrambling to identify their top tight end. David Ausberry, Richard Gordon and rookies Nick Kasa and Mychal Rivera are in the mix.

"We're looking for someone to step up," coach Dennis Allen said, via the Oakland Tribune. "We want someone to say, 'I'm the man, and this is my job.' We're going to let the competition dictate that and give everyone an opportunity."

The paper gives a slight edge to Ausberry, a 6-4, 258-pound converted wideout.

David Ausberry making good impression

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/29/2013) Raiders tight end David Ausberry is making a good impression early in training camp in his attempt to replace Brandon Myers as the starter this year.

Sports Illustrated columnist Peter King said Ausberry is the "most impressive unknown player I saw" in his first week of touring training camp. And the Contra Costa Times reports that Ausberry should have the lead in his battle with Richard Gordon, Nick Kasa and Mychal Rivera, as well as Brian Leonhardt and Jeron Mastrud.

Coach Dennis Allen likes what he sees from Ausberry.

"Absolutely we're looking for somebody to step up," Allen said. "That's what training camp is all about. We want somebody to step up, say that, 'I’m the man and this is my job.' We’re going to let the competition dictate that. We're going to give everybody the opportunity, at least early in camp, to prove that they're worthy of that title, of being the guy."

Raiders tight end job up for grabs

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/4/2013) The Contra Costa Times reports the departure of Brandon Myers to the Giants in free agency left a huge void for the Raiders to fill at tight end. Myers led the Raiders in receptions last season, and he played almost every down, while David Ausberry and Richard Gordon bided their time on the sideline. Ausberry and Gordon are back for another crack at earning more playing time. The Raiders drafted Nick Kasa and Mychal Rivera as a means of creating more competition. “It’s pretty wide open,” coach Dennis Allen said. “All those guys are doing a nice job. Obviously, it’s hurt not having Kasa (hamstring) out there because he’s a guy we really anticipated being able to step-in and potentially fill a role for us. So, hopefully, we’ll get him out there soon. The big thing, again, with those guys, just like it is with everyone else, it’s going to be the consistency issue because they are relatively young at the position.”
