Jaguars bringing Cecil Shorts along slowly

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(8/19/2014) Jaguars receiver Cecil Shorts looked good in practice Sunday and Monday, but the team isn't letting him go full throttle, coach Gus Bradley told the Florida Times-Union. Shorts injured his hamstring on the first day of training camp and didn't practice until Sunday.

"Obviously, he's a guy who wants to take as many reps as he can," Bradley said. "But we're bringing him along slowly in drill work. He gets two reps per period. We'll gradually increase it to where he gets four and then take it from there."

Shorts will play Friday against the Lions, but not into the third quarter like the rest of the starters, the paper said.

Cecil Shorts practices for first time since July 25

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(8/17/2014) Jaguars receiver Cecil Shorts returned to practice Sunday. It was his first practice since he injured his hamstring on the first day of camp, July 25, reports the Florida Times-Union.

Eight Jaguars skip trip to Chicago

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8/14/2014) The following Jaguars players did not travel to Chicago for Week 2 of preseason: linebacker Paul Posluszny, wide receiver Tandon Doss, safety Deion Belue, linebacker Dekoda Watson, wide receiver Allen Robinson, wide receiver Lamaar Thomas, wide receiver Cecil Shorts and tight end Clay Harbor.

Cecil Shorts 'definitely ahead of schedule'

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8/9/2014) Jaguars wide receiver Cecil Shorts told The Florida Times-Union he is "definitely ahead of schedule" in his recovery from a hamstring injury suffered July 25.

Shorts declined to give a timetable for his return, but the report indicates it is unlikely to play Thursday against the Bears. He appears to be targeting Aug. 22 against the Lions to return, and has been able to increase his activity in recent days.

"I ran 100 percent a couple times last week straight-line and actually ran 8-10 routes, too, and felt good," Shorts said. "I'm going to do it again Sunday and we’ll go from there. We just want to be careful and not aggravate it."

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8/8/2014) The Jaguars revealed a list of players who will not participate in Friday's preseason opener against the Buccaneers. The following players will sit out: Sherrod Martin, Tandon Doss, Alan Ball, Toby Gerhart, J.T. Thomas, Allen Robinson, Cecil Shorts, Brandon Barden and Clay Harbor.

Cecil Shorts won't suit up vs. Bucs

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/8/2014) When the Jaguars take on the Buccaneers in preseason action on Friday, receiver Cecil Shorts won't play. Shorts will rest his hamstring, hurt back in the early days of training camp. Receivers coach Jerry Sullivan cautioned that Shorts needs to get back on the field in order to make an impact this season, the Florida Times-Union reported

Shorts aims to get back on the field well before Week 1.

Jaguars have lost seven receivers so far

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(8/6/2014) For a few hours Wednesday, the Jaguars had two healthy receivers who have played in the NFL. That's how many receivers Jacksonville has lost. ESPN.com updated the team's woes at wideout:

Mike Brown went down with hamstring tightness Wednesday after a strong camp. It's unclear how long he'll be out.

Starter Cecil Shorts left the first practice July 25 with hamstring tightness too and has not practiced since. Rookie Allen Robinson strained his hamstring July 31 and will be out at least one more week. Tandon Doss is out indefinitely with a badly sprained ankle.

Rookie Damian Copeland went on IR on Monday with a wrist injury. Rookie Nathan Slaughter sprained his foot and is out several weeks. Ace Sanders, who caught 51 passes last year, took a leave of absence for "personal issues" and will face a four-game substance abuse suspension upon his return.

"Man, I've never seen anything like it," said receiver Kerry Taylor, who started four games last year. "I don't even know what to call it."

Marqise Lee, Cecil Shorts listed as starters

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(8/4/2014) The Jaguars released a depth chart showing Cecil Shorts and rookie Marqise Lee as the starting wideouts, reports ESPN.com. Lee is the only one of the top three projected receivers practicing, as Shorts and rookie Allen Robinson are out with hamstring injuries.

Hamstring problem has Cecil Shorts out for a few weeks

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(7/26/2014) Gus Bradley has announced that a hamstring injury will keep Jaguars wide receiver Cecil Shorts sidelined for several weeks. That could keep him out of at least two preseason games.

Shorts easily led the team with 777 yards receiving last year. His health and productivity are critical considering that fellow Jacksonville wideout Justin Blackmon has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL.

Report: Cecil Shorts a no-go for Saturday practice

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(7/26/2014) Hamstring tightness that forced Jaguars top receiver Cecil Shorts out of practice Friday has apparently prevented him from participating Saturday. He is not on the field, according to the team website, though the injury is not considered serious.

The team can certainly use a healthy Shorts this season. Though his production weakened as the year progressed, he did finish with 66 receptions for 777 yards.

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/25/2014) Jaguars receiver Cecil Shorts was pulled from practice Friday because of hamstring tightness, reports the Associated Press. However he was spotted later walking around with his family without a wrap or ice on. The Florida Times-Union presumes the injury isn't serious

Jaguars counting on Marqise Lee, Allen Robinson

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/17/2014) The Jaguars have questions at receiver this season, reports ESPN.

Heading into the season, the only certainties based on experience are Cecil Shorts and Ace Sanders. After that, the rest of the group is unknown.

The report says it would seem second-round picks Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson would naturally be the next two, but both missed most organized team activities and all of minicamp with injuries. They're supposed to be fully cleared for camp, but they missed valuable time.

Next would be Kerry Taylor and Mike Brown, as well as undrafted rookie Allen Hurns. Justin Blackmon is suspended indefinitely.

Jaguars receiving corps starts to take shape

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/24/2014) The Jaguars are expected to go with Cecil Shorts, Allen Robinson, Marqise Lee, Mike Brown, Allen Hurns and Ace Sanders as their receivers this season, reports the Florida Times-Union.

The report says Sanders has an edge on Tandon Doss, and Hurns, an undrafted free agent, was one of the biggest surprises of the offseason and makes the team if he can stay on the field. Brown also earns a spot because his reliability gives him the advantage.

Cecil Shorts out for minicamp

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/17/2014) Jaguars receiver Cecil Shorts will not take part in this week's minicamp, reports the team's official website.

Coach Gus Bradley said Tuesday that Shorts will be out all week. He was bothered with a calf injury during OTA workouts.

Cecil Shorts could be looking at a raise

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/9/2014) Jaguars receiver Cecil Shorts could be looking at a similar contract that Seattle's Doug Baldwin signed recently, reports the Florida Times-Union.

Baldwin signed a three-year, $13 million contract that includes $8.5 million guaranteed. Shorts is scheduled to become a free agent next offseason.

"I'm not even thinking about that," Shorts said. "That's not my job."

Asked if he noticed Baldwin's deal, Shorts said: "You take note of everybody. … But I don't have anything to do with the numbers – that's something my [representation] and [Jaguars general manager] Dave [Caldwell] will figure out when the time comes. I'm just focused on football."

The report says if Shorts is offered a contract before training camp starts, he should take it "every day of the week and twice on Sunday."

With the addition of Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson, Shorts' numbers could dip along with possibly playing for a rookie quarterback (Blake Bortles) at some point. He's also suffered from concussions and a groin injury the last two seasons.

Jaguars receivers hurting

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(6/6/2014) Jaguars rookie receiver Marqise Lee missed his third consecutive practice Thursday with an ankle injury, reports the Florida Times-Union. He was joined on the sidelines by wideouts Cecil Shorts (calf), Ace Sanders (hamstring), Mike Brown (groin), rookie Allen Robinson (hamstring), Tandon Doss (calf) and Lamaar Thomas (knee).

Tight calf sidelines Cecil Shorts

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/3/2014) Jaguars receiver Cecil Shorts, who had earned praise from his head coach this week, left practice early Tuesday with calf tightness according to the official team website. Shorts is one of seven Jaguars receivers missing at least a part of Tuesday's practice.

Coach praises Cecil Shorts' OTA workouts

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/3/2014) Through four days of OTA practices in Jacksonville, receiver Cecil Shorts has stood out as the Jaguars' top receiver according to coach Gus Bradley. Maybe that's not a surprise given Shorts' experience and production, particularly compared to the other receivers on the roster, but it does show he's healthy and ready to contribute.

"Cecil has had a great four days," Bradley said Monday according to the Florida Times-Union. "He really has (played well) even when we were down some numbers in wide receivers and he stepped up again. He's doing a tremendous job leading that young group and for himself. The challenge for him is to compete with himself and that's how we talk. He's doing a great job."

Jags looking to extend Cecil Shorts

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5/13/2014) Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell expressed confidence that receiver Cecil Shorts will be with the team for a long time, reports the Florida Times-Union. The 2011 fourth-round pick is entering the final season of his four-year deal.

"We've had some general discussions with his representation," Caldwell told the paper. "Obviously, we want him here for the long haul. He's a valuable part of our organization and we'd love to at some point in time take care of Cecil."

Shorts caught 66 passes for 777 yards and three touchdowns last year.

Jaguars draft another WR with Allen Robinson

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/9/2014) With the No. 61 pick in the NFL Draft, the Jaguars selected receiver Allen Robinson from Penn State.

Robinson is the second receiver the Jaguars have drafted with Marqise Lee going earlier in the second round at No. 39 overall, which is a need with Justin Blackmon suspended. Jacksonville also drafted a quarterback in the first round at No, 3 overall with Blake Bortles.

A behemoth at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, Robinson is best known for his strong frame, sharp cuts and physical play. He's not afraid to mix it up and has good hands. He's a good run blocker, too.

Robinson set several single-season school and conference records last year thanks to a 97-catch, 1,432-yard campaign. He will compete with Lee to start opposite Cecil Shorts this year.

Jaguars draft Marqise Lee

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/9/2014) With the No. 39 pick in the NFL Draft, the Jaguars selected receiver Marqise Lee from Southern Cal.

Lee had an injury-plagued 2013 (left knee), which is part of the reason he may have fallen to the second round. But in 2012 he caught 118 passes for 1,721 yards (14.6 avg.) and 14 touchdowns while averaging 28.5 yards per kickoff. In 2013 he had 57 catches for 791 yards (13.8 avg.) and four touchdowns.

The Jaguars have a need at receiver with Justin Blackmon suspended, and Lee could be asked to play right away alongside Cecil Shorts.

Cecil Shorts not yet at full strength

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(4/24/2014) Entering a contract year following a disappointing season, the stakes couldn't be higher for Jaguars wideout Cecil Shorts. But in order to rebound and earn that large pay day, he has to get on the field first. That's a problem -- the Florida Times-Union reports Shorts is still dealing with the effects of groin surgery and is not yet at 100 percent, but hopes to be soon.

"I'm on the right path where I'm able to run without any pain," Shorts said. "I still have some work to do and I'm not 100 percent yet, but I'm looking to get there soon. Now, I have to get my strength back and confidence back."

Coach Gus Bradley commented that Shorts is "leaner" and more focused than before on becoming a better contributor to the offense. Shorts will experience his first training camp where he's not learning a new playbook. He had a career-high 66 catches last year for 777 yards and three touchdowns.

Cecil Shorts must prove he can stay healthy

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/5/2014) As Jaguars receiver Cecil Shorts enters the final year of his rookie contract, the 26-year-old must prove he can stay healthy and play 16 games, reports ESPN.com. Shorts missed 11 games over his first three seasons, including the last three games of 2013 with a sports hernia.

The website suggests the Jags should hold off on a contract extension until Shorts proves his durability.

Cecil Shorts expects to be ready for OTAs

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12/30/2013) Jaguars receiver Cecil Shorts told the team's website he expects to be ready for OTAs, or Organized Team Activities, in May. Shorts underwent sports hernia surgery this month after playing in 13 games this season.

He finished with 66 catches for 777 yards and three touchdowns.
