49ers undecided about No. 3 receiver

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(8/27/2014) Quinton Patton, not Steve Johnson, served as the 49ers' third receiver Sunday against the Chargers, notes the Sacramento Bee. Coach Jim Harbaugh told the paper that he hasn't decided who will fill that role during the season.

Johnson told the paper he's still working to build chemistry with quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

49ers not ready to award Steve Johnson No. 3 receiver role

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8/22/2014) The 49ers aren't ready to declare Steve Johnson as the team's No. 3 receiver. In fact, according to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, the team won't "put numbers" on their receivers. Johnson is fight Brandon Lloyd, Quinton Patton, and rookie Bruce Ellington for snaps this preseason.

When asked if Johnson is the third wideout, offensive coordinator Greg Roman said: "It depends. It depends. I think we'll have some flexibility there."

Colin Kaepernick, two others, face no charges from Miami incident

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/12/2014) There will be no charges filed against 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, Seahawks receiver Ricardo Lockette or 49ers receiver Quinton Patton from a suspicious incident that occurred earlier this offseason in Miami in which Kaepernick was linked to a possible sexual assault, Comcast Sports Net reports.

"No charges, no indication that a criminal act was committed," Ed Griffith of the state attorney's office said. "She was alleging that she may have been the victim of a sexual assault, and there was no evidence."

The announcement brings a conclusion to an episode in which Kaepernick maintained his innocence from the beginning.

Quinton Patton OK after injury scare

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/4/2014) 49ers receiver Quinton Patton had an injury scare at practice Monday with his foot, but he's expected to be fine, reports the Sacramento Bee.

Patton had a CT scan Tuesday, and the results were good. Patton missed most of this rookie season in 2013 with a broken foot.

He is expected to be the No. 4 receiver for the 49ers this season behind Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin and Steve Johnson.

Stevie Johnson's Fantasy value at the end of the line?

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/9/2014) When you're the top receiver in Buffalo, you have a shot at 1,000 yards and lots of catches. But when you get traded from that spot to one where you're just another fish in a pond, your chances of being a stellar contributor decline. That's what's going on with Steve Johnson, who was traded from the Bills to the 49ers.

Johnson joins a Niners team ripe with receiving talent. Michael Crabtree is a stud outside threat, Anquan Boldin has made his living in the slot but can also work outside. Quinton Patton is a young receiver with some wheels. And Vernon Davis is also in the mix. How, exactly, is Johnson supposed to come up with 1,000-plus yards and lots of touchdowns with that crew to work with?

Answer: He's not. We've already seen his numbers tumble since his breakout 2010 season and last year his body didn't do him any favors after reportedly not working out during the offseason. We expect Johnson to play a complementary role with the Niners, more than likely in the slot. He's hard to get excited about. Johnson might be worth a late-round pick in drafts this summer.

How Lloyd's signing impacts 49ers' receiving corps

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(4/15/2014) The 49ers signed Brandon Lloyd on Tuesday, which should impact Kassim Osgood and Jon Baldwin but not matter much to Quinton Patton, reports ESPN.

The 49ers are locked in with their top two receivers in Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin, and Patton is expected to be No. 3 on the depth chart. After that, the 49ers are wide open, and Lloyd could be No. 4 ahead of Baldwin and Osgood.

The report says if Lloyd makes the team Baldwin will likely be out. The team re-signed Osgood this offseason because he is a huge part of the special teams. But the 49ers will likely not keep more than six receivers.

Patton, who finished the season strong in 2013 as a rookie, should have time to develop as the No. 3 option. The 49ers are also expected to take a wide receiver in the draft.

Colin Kaepernick among those named in 'suspicious incident'

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(4/10/2014) 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was one of three people named in a Miami-Dade County police report surrounding a "suspicious incident" in South Florida on April 1.

A spokesperson for the police told CBSSports.com that Kaepernick is not being investigated but that they're following up on an information report involving him.

Per the report, obtained by CBSSports.com, the woman claims she woke up in a hospital bed without knowledge of how she got there following a visit to see Kaepernick, former 49ers and current Seahawks receiver Ricardo Lockette and Niners wideout Quinton Patton in a Miami-area hotel. It's made clear that Kaepernick and the victim had a previous physical relationship.

"The 49ers organization is aware of the recent media report regarding Colin Kaepernick and is in the process of gathering the pertinent facts," general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement.

Anquan Boldin excited for 49ers offense

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(4/3/2014) 49ers receiver Anquan Boldin said he's excited for the offense this year with Michael Crabtree coming back at 100 percent. Crabtree missed the first 11 games last year with an Achilles injury.

Boldin said in an interview with CBSSports.com that Colin Kaepernick now has all of his weapons back with Crabtree, Boldin and Vernon Davis. Quinton Patton is expected to take on a bigger role, and the 49ers have an excellent backfield with Frank Gore and the potential of second-year running back Marcus Lattimore, who is coming back from a devastating knee injury at South Carolina in 2012.

"It's going to be big," Boldin said of Crabtree being back. "It's going to be major for us. Toward the end of the season you were able to see a glimpse of what it's like to have me and him on the field at the same time, and then you have Vernon working out of the tight end position. And we have the young guy in Quinton Patton coming along. We were expecting him to play well. With all four of us on the field and Frank coming out of the backfield and getting Lattimore healthy, it's going to be tough. It's going to be a potent offense, and we're looking to make a run this year."

Quinton Patton doesn't get vote of confidence

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/26/2014) Second-year wideout Quinton Patton is listed as the 49ers' No. 3 receiver behind Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin.

But coach Jim Harbaugh said the team continues to search for "a third guy who can get open and make plays, another option for the quarterback to go to, a chance to attack all areas of the field," reports CSNBayArea.com. "A playmaker. That’s what we’re looking for.”

Patton missed 10 games last year due to a broken foot, finishing with three catches. The 49ers aren't banking on his rapid development.

Quinton Patton a part of the 49ers future

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(2/20/2014) The 49ers drafted Quinton Patton last year and he showed flashes of big-play ability before he broke his foot. Though he didn't make much of an impact in 2013, Comcast Sportsnet believes he is viewed as a potential starting wideout within the organization

Patton wound up catching just three passes for 34 yards in six games last season.

Quinton Patton to train with Colin Kaepernick in offseason

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1/29/2014) On the flight home from the NFC Championship Game, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick invited rookie receiver Quinton Patton to train with him in Miami this offseason. “I was like, ‘I’m there. I’ll be down there training with you,’” Patton told the team's website.

It's an important offseason for Patton, who finished the playoffs as the team's No. 3 wideout and could move up if 11-year veteran Anquan Boldin leaves via free agency.

“I just want to get bigger, stronger, faster,” Patton said. “I want to get better at the little details and everything will take care of itself.”

Quinton Patton 'may be a find'

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1/28/2014) A broken foot wiped out much of 49ers receiver Quinton Patton's rookie season. But when he returned he "showed a real burst," reports ESPN.com. "He has explosion and plays with a lot of confidence. He looks like he may be a find."

The fourth-round pick is headed for a bigger role, especially if San Fran does not re-sign Anquan Boldin.

Quinton Patton to work with QB in offseason

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(1/24/2014) Rookie wide receiver Quinton Patton was used little by the 49ers in 2013. He doesn't plan to be little-used in 2014, which is why he has accepted an invitation to work out with quarterback Colin Kaepernick in Miami during the offseason.

"I just want to get bigger, stronger, faster," Patton told the team website. Patton managed just three catches for 34 yards in the regular season and added two receptions for 25 yards in the playoffs. "I want to get better at the little details and everything will take care of itself," he added.
