Lions counting on Darius Slay as starter

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/30/2014) Lions cornerback Darius Slay was inconsistent as a rookie but the team is counting on him as a starter in 2014, according to the team's website.

“He has a lot of work to do,” general manager Martin Mayhew said. “I think he’s up to the challenge. He finished up strong for us the last half of the season. I’m looking forward to seeing him this season.”

The Lions are expected to play more aggressive, man-to-man coverage under new coordinator Teryl Austin, a style that suits Slay's strengths, the report said.

Lions want consistency from up-and-down Darius Slay

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/10/2014) Lions cornerback Darius Slay had an up-and-down rookie year after being drafted 36th overall. He began the season as a starter, lost the job to Rashean Mathis, then made the most of another chance to start when he replaced the injured Chris Houston on Thanksgiving.

In that 40-10 win over Green Bay, Slay had three passes defensed and two tackles.

"You know, he had some things, he had some growing pains," new defensive coordinator Teryl Austin told the team's website. "There were some times he didn't look very good and there were some times he looked outstanding.

"Our goal is to try to get him to be consistent, to be a consistent player. That way, that talent will start to take over."

A knee injury cost Slay three games. He finished with 34 tackles and six passes defensed. He'll get every opportunity to earn a starting job in 2014, according to the website.

"I took it serious, but it’s a team effort here," he said. "And I knew I was going to end up with a potential look; my name could be called at any time, so I had to game-plan seriously just as always, like I was starting. So it wasn’t a big issue."

Slay has been replaced in the starting lineup by Rashean Mathis, but coach Jim Schwartz continues to believe Slay has a bright future in the NFL.

"They tell me the same thing,"  Slay said. "It’s a learning process. It’s just like I learned with the zone concepts. They say I’m a great man player, but I’ve got to learn the concepts of how to match players better and all that. So right now I’m just learning, watching ’Shean and getting better."
