Jets' Sheldon Richardson: Missed OTAs for 'personal' reasons

(6/9/2015) Sheldon Richardson didn't expand on why he missed a chunk of the Jets' organized team activity practices this offseason. 

"Personal. Nothing more, nothing less," Richardson said when asked about his absence, via ESPN.com

Richardson took some heat from fans on Twitter after posting a tweet saying he has a "life outside of football." Richardson, however, isn't concerned what people think about his decision not to show up for part of the team's OTA practices. 

"Hate me or love me, that’s just the way it goes," he said. "I’m gonna play ball regardless."

Defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson said that Wilkerson told him he'd be there. 

Wilkerson has skipped the voluntary portion of the Jets' offseason activities due to a contract dispute.

(5/22/2015) Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson is skipping the team's OTAs this week, a decision that earned him criticism from fans and media. 

Richardson's explanation isn't likely to win anyone over. 

Richardson went on Twitter and told fans he missed the workouts because, "I have a life outside of football."

"I chose to enjoy my family a little longer," he continued. "So to (you) fans that know everything, please worry 'bout yourself."

Richardson pointed out in another tweet that he "jus' wasn't at practice," but that he was still "putting in work tho'"


Jets' Richardson, Marshall not at voluntary OTA's


(5/20/2015) The Jets were without defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson and wide receiver Brandon Marshall at the team's voluntary organized team activities on Wednesaday, per nj.com.

Wednesday marked the second day of the Jets' 10-day voluntary workout program. Marshall was present on the first day but Richardson was not.

Jets coach Todd Bowles said Marshall was absent on Wednesday because he "had something to take care of, but "it wasn't conveyed" to him why Richardson was not there.

Richardson was the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2013 and is projected to play a key role on the Jets' defense.

(5/20/2015) The Jets kicked off more offseason training activities Wednesday without three core members of their team, as Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson and Brandon Marshall were all absent for the voluntary training, per ESPN.com. 

Wilkerson's absence is no surprise, as the defensive lineman is seeking a new contract from the team and has stated he won't take part in voluntary team activities. Richardson and Marshall are not involved in contract disputes. 


Jets DT Sheldon Richardson going to Pro Bowl

(1/14/2015) Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson is headed to the Pro Bowl as a replacement for Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, who is out with a knee injury, reports ESPN.com. Richardson started every game this season and finished with 66 tackles, eight sacks and a forced fumble.

Probables dominate injury report released by Jets

(11/29/2014) The Jets have ruled out defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson (toe) and tight end Jace Amaro (concussion) for the Monday night game against Miami.

The team is otherwise healthy. All others on their injury report are probable, including quarterback Michael Vick (wrist) and running backs Chris Ivory (shoulder), Chris Johnson (knee), Bilal Powell (illness) and John Conner (groin). The other offensive probables are linemen Nick Mangold (shoulder), Oday Aboushi (shoulder) and Willie Colon (knee) and wideout Eric Decker (toe).

The defensive probables are linebackers Antwan Barnes (knee) and David Harris (shoulder), defensive back Jaiquawn Jarrett (calf) and defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson (back).

(2/1/2014) The awards for the 2013 NFL season were announced Saturday, and Packers running back Eddie Lacy and Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson won rookie of the year honors for offense and defense, respectively.

Lacy, the 61st overall pick out of Alabama, had 284 carries for 1,178 yards (4.1 yards per carry), with 11 touchdowns in his first year in the league. Richardson, a first-round pick out of Missouri, registered 77 tackles and 3.5 sacks while starting all 16 games this season for the Jets.

Rex Ryan refutes criticism of Sheldon Richardson

(2/1/2014) Rex Ryan has delivered a strong rebuttal to the claim by Hall of Famer Warren Sapp that Jets rookie defensive end Sheldon Richardson lacks pass-rushing skills.

"I believe he can rush the passer," Ryan told the New York Daily News. "Maybe Sheldon doesn't rush the passer like Warren Sapp did. Very few in this league have ever rushed the passer the way Warren Sapp has ... but this is a young man now. This guy is just now scratching the surface."

Richardson started 15 of 16 games and managed 77 tackles, but just 3 1/2 sacks.

Richardson received back-to-back carries at the 1-yard line and punched it in on his second attempt for his first career rushing touchdown. Defensively. He also chipped in with four total tackles (one solo) in a 30-20 defeat.
