News: Cowboys RB Sammy Morris has rushed for 82 yards on 25 carries in two games this season and could be in for another slow performance in Week 17 against the Giants. New York ranks 22nd in the league in run defense, giving up over 126 yards per game, and has allowed an average of 17 Fantasy points to opposing running backs.
Analysis: Felix Jones is expected to get the start for Dallas again on Sunday, which leaves Morris with the backup duties. While the Giants have not been very tough against the run thus far, the 34-year-old is not looking like the best of options for Sunday. Consider Morris a low-end No. 4 Fantasy RB or flex option for Week 17.
News: Cowboys RB Sammy Morris led the team with 29 rushing yards on 13 carries in Week 16 versus the Eagles. After it was announced that the Giants lost to the Jets, starter Felix Jones did not play, leaving Morris as the lead back. He also caught four passes for 10 yards in the 20-7 loss.
Analysis: One has to think if Jones is healthy, he'll get the bulk of the carries in Week 17 versus the Giants. If that is the case Morris would not be worth using in many Fantasy leagues. Continue to monitor the running back situation before setting those lineups.
News: Dallas RB Sammy Morris could be the main back for the Cowboys in Week 16 against the Eagles, if Felix Jones doesn't play. As of now, owner/general manager Jerry Jones expects Felix to play -- he's listed as questionable on the injury report. Philadelphia has been giving up 19 Fantasy points per game to opposing team's running backs this season.
Analysis: Morris rushed for 53 yards in his debut last weekend just days after he was signed by Dallas. Despite not playing much for the Cowboys, Morris has a good matchup. The Eagles have been allowing 113 rushing yards per game and have been burned for 11 touchdowns on the ground this year. Even though running backs have produced behind that offensive line in Dallas, Morris should be viewed as merely a flex option for Week 16.
News: Cowboys RB Sammy Morris looked pretty impressive in his debut in Week 15 against the Buccaneers. Morris finished with 53 yards rushing on 12 carries in the 31-15 victory, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. He had a long of 15n yards but did not score in the contest.
Analysis: Morris was just signed on Tuesday and looked very fresh against the Bucs. The veteran will serve as a backup to Felix Jones, but could see a few touches a game. However, as long as Jones is healthy, he likely won't touch the ball enough to be worth owning in most formats. Leave him on the waiver wire heading into Week 16.
News: Dallas signed RB Sammy Morris on Tuesday after placing starting RB DeMarco Murray (ankle) on season-ending injured reserve. Morris, who played with Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett in Miami in 2004, has spent the past four seasons with New England.
Analysis: Morris is expected to serve as the backup to RB Felix Jones as the two represent the only healthy running backs on the Dallas roster. The 11-year veteran is not expected to receive many carries and should not be considered a worthwhile Fantasy option.
News: ESPN reports RB Sammy Morris is expected to sign with the Cowboys in the wake of DeMarco Murray suffering a fractured right ankle Week 14.
Analysis: If Dallas does sign Morris, then he immediately becomes the backup RB to Felix Jones since Phillip Tanner is already on IR. Morris could be the power back to complement Jones in the running game. However, we expect Jones to get much of the workload out of the backfield, so Morris would merely be a handcuff Fantasy option initially.
News: Veteran RB Sammy Morris was one of several cuts by the Patriots on Saturday. Morris re-signed before the season to provide depth at the position but was shown the door, likely because of his age and declining ability. Other Patriots released include: DE Markell Carter, DE Aaron Lavarias, WR Tiquan Underwood, DE Alex Silvestro, LB Niko Koutouvides, RB Eric Kettani and DL Landon Cohen.
Analysis: Morris might land on an NFL roster before the end of the year but the 12-year veteran isn't exactly a candidate to pick up tons of yardage. Fantasy owners should keep him off of rosters.
News: The Patriots have re-signed veteran RB Sammy Morris, according to the player's agent. Morris' touches have been on a downward spiral over the last three seasons and could continue to trend that way given the young depth the Patriots have at the running back position.
Analysis: Morris might wind up playing fullback and otherwise being a mentor to the Pats' young running backs. We suspect his stats will be minimal this season. Fantasy owners should pass on him.
News: The Patriots drafted running backs Shane Vereen of Cal and Stevan Ridley of LSU in the 2011 NFL Draft, likely signaling the end of Sammy Morris' time with the team. Morris will be a free agent this offseason after spending four seasons with the Pats.
Analysis: We're not sure if Morris, who will be 34 when the season starts, will play football again, which makes him a risky choice in any Fantasy league. Pass on him at this point.
News: The Boston Herald reports that RB Sammy Morris has no plans to retire and could return to the Patriots in 2011. The story reports that with Kevin Faulk and Fred Taylor considering retirement, Morris could stick around with the Pats to offer guidance to a young position group that will include BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Danny Woodhead and likely a rookie.
Analysis: Keep an eye on what happens with Morris, but he has minimal Fantasy value. Ignore him in all leagues on Draft Day.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris had another slow performance in Week 14 against the Bears. He had just one carry for 2 yards and returned a kickoff for 18 yards in the 36-7 win. Morris has 15 carries on the year for 38 yards.
Analysis: Morris continues to see minimal touches for the Patriots this season and does not pose much Fantasy value going forward. As long as he is buried on the depth chart, continue to view the 33-year-old as a low-end option. Leave Morris on waivers heading into Week 15 against the Packers.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris did not see too many touches in Week 13 against the Jets. He did not carry the ball and had just one reception for 4 yards in the 45-3 win.
Analysis: Morris has received just 14 carries on the year and does not stand to see many more as he his buried as the No. 4 running back on the Patriots depth chart. With the Bears and their second-ranked run defense up next on the schedule, continue to leave the 33-year-old on waivers in all formats.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris hauled in a 15-yard catch in the team's Week 12 win at Detroit. It was his fourth catch of the season.
Analysis: Morris doesn't post enough stats to warrant Fantasy use. Keep him off of rosters.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris caught one pass for 22 yards in a Week 9 loss at Cleveland.
Analysis: Morris has become an afterthought in the Patriots offense behind BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead lately and really shouldn't be owned in Fantasy play right now. New England visits Pittsburgh in Week 10.
News: With the emergence of BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead, Patriots RB Sammy Morris has seen his role on the team take a major hit. So major, he did not even see the ball once in Week 8 after seeing it just once in the previous two weeks. If there was any way he would assume a bigger role, it would be against the lowly Browns in Week 9. Cleveland sports the NFL's 19th-ranked rush defense, allowing 111.3 yards per game.
Analysis: The 2.6 yards Morris gains on average could also be the reason for the fallout. Still, when you have Tom Brady on your side, defenses have to prepare for the passing game. The only way Morris could possibly jump back into the Patriots RB rotation is by making the most of the limited opportunities he could get if the team opens up a fair lead on Sunday. Consider Morris to be a very low-end Fantasy option at the absolute best.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris was non-factor in Week 7 against the Chargers. Morris ran for just 2 yards on one carry in the 23-20 win.
Analysis: Morris will only be used if the running backs in New England are injured, and he has minimal Fantasy value. We recommend leaving him on the bench for week 8 against the Vikings.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris had a quiet game in Week 6 against Baltimore. Morris had just one carry for 3 yards.
Analysis: Morris will only be used if the running backs in New England are injured, and he has minimal Fantasy value. Don't plan on using Morris in the majority of leagues in Week 7 against the Chargers since that's a difficult matchup.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris was little-used in Week 4 against the Dolphins. He carried the ball just two times for 3 yards in the 41-14 win. He was mainly used as a blocker and opened up a huge hole on special teams as WR Brandon Tate returned a kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown.
Analysis: Morris has carried the ball nine times for 24 yards on the year and has fallen down the depth chart behind BenJarvis Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead. He has seen a few more opportunities with injuries to Fred Taylor and Kevin Faulk but has not been producing at a high level. Unless his role improves significantly, consider Morris a low-end Fantasy RB for use in deeper leagues. He does not play again until Week 6 against the Ravens as the Patriots are on a bye next week.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris will be one of the primary options the Patriots could turn to if Fred Taylor can't play in Week 4 against the Dolphins. Taylor missed his third straight day of practice on Friday, making his chances of playing of Monday slim. The Dolphins rank 19th against the run this season, allowing 117.3 yards per game and have allowed an average of 16 Fantasy points to opposing RBs this season.
Analysis: Morris will likely be the prime candidate to start if Taylor can't play on Monday, but he will have to compete with BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead for carries. Morris has seven carries for 21 yards this season and has yet to find the end zone. Consider him a low-end No. 4 Fantasy RB heading into Week 4 against the Dolphins.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris got six carries for 19 yards in a Week 3 win over the Bills.
Analysis: Morris should be the No. 2 back in New England if Fred Taylor continues to have trouble dealing with his current toe injury, but with BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead showing off their solid skills against the Bills on Sunday, Morris will still have two other guys to share carries with. Continue to stash Morris in deeper leagues, but don't start him in Week 4 at Miami.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris did not seen much action against the Jets in Week 2. The 33-year-old did not rush the ball once and was targeted for two passes in the 28-14 loss. He snagged one catch for 19 yards in the fourth quarter but dropped his only other opportunity.
Analysis: The Patriots traded away Laurence Maroney before Week 2 but it really did not enhance Morris' performance. He sat and watched while Fred Taylor, Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis had more productive games and really did not seen any action until the fourth quarter. He will see minimal playing time, barring injuries to the players in front of him, and should be benched in the majority of leagues heading into Week 3 against the Bills.
News: After the Patriots traded away Laurence Maroney earlier in the week, RB Sammy Morris could see an increased role for Week 2 against the Jets. He had just one carry for 2 yards in the opener against the Bengals. New York gave up just 49 yards rushing in Week 1 but Morris will likely still be behind Fred Taylor, Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis on the depth chart. In 15 career games against the Jets, Morris has 258 yards rushing with two touchdowns.
Analysis: Morris has not had a ton of success against the Jets in his career, averaging just 3.11 yards per carry, and still has some work to do to vault up the depth chart. He will see minimal playing time, barring injuries to the players in front of him, and should be benched in the majority of leagues in Week 2 against the Jets since that's an extremely difficult matchup.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris had a quiet game in Week 1 against Cincinnati. Morris had just one carry for 2 yards. The Patriots were down a RB with Laurence Maroney (thigh) out, but Morris was still just the No. 4 option in carries behind Fred Taylor, Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis.
Analysis: Morris will only be used if Maroney and Taylor are injured, and he has minimal Fantasy value. Don't plan on using Morris in the majority of leagues in Week 2 against the Jets since that's an extremely difficult matchup.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris will enter his 11th NFL season most likely as the No. 3 RB in New England behind Fred Taylor and Laurence Maroney. He will get some carries in Week 1 against Cincinnati, but he's not expected to do much in what could be a tough matchup since Cincinnati was among the best teams at stopping the run in 2009. The Bengals only allowed seven rushing touchdowns to opposing running backs last year and only Jerome Harrison and Jamaal Charles ran for more than 100 yards in a single game.
Analysis: Morris will get spot duty against the Bengals and thus has minimal Fantasy value as long as Taylor and Maroney are healthy. He is not worth using in the majority of leagues for Week 1 barring a significant injury.
News: New England RB Sammy Morris had his mouth examined by the training staff during Thursday's preseason game with New York. The trainers wiped away some blood before taking him back to the locker room. Coach Bill Belichick didn't get into specifics, but he said Morris received a "stitch or two" in his mouth after leaving the game in the first half. Belichick wouldnt say if he plans on using a committee of running backs or one primary back. Fred Taylor and Laurence Maroney are also in the mix to see substantial carries for the Patriots. Morris was targeted once during the game and did not have any carries.
Analysis: Receiving a few stitches shouldn't keep Morris out of action in Week 1versus Cincinnati. With him likely being among a committee of running backs, his stats and production will vary week-to-week. Morris should be considered a late-round Fantasy flier on Draft Day.
News: In the team's third preseason contest, which usually acts as the dress rehearsal for the regular season, the Patriots started Sammy Morris at RB over Laurence Maroney and Fred Taylor. Unfortunately, Morris didn't do much out of the backfield. He produced 12 yards on five carries in the first half, as New England primarily stuck with the passing game. Morris did have 52 yards and one touchdown on six carries (8.7 ypg) coming into Thursday.
Analysis: One bad performance is not going to put Morris in the coach's doghouse. Still, we doubt he is going to be an elite back in 2010 for the Patriots. Yes, he might start often and be the team's leading rusher. But New England has a bevy of backs for all sorts of situations, so Morris might not be a reliable Fantasy option. He is best left as a late-round Fantasy flier on Draft Day. Initially, he might be started as a flex option or low-end No. 2 Fantasy RB if the Patriots have favorable matchups early in the season.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris scampered 20 yards for a touchdown during Thursday's win over the Falcons. He got some time with the first team offense, but did most of his damage in the second half. On third and twelve in the third quarter, he took a handoff from Brian Hoyer and ran around left end for his first score of the preseason. Morris finished with 52 yards on six carries, adding one reception for three yards.
Analysis: Morris has averaged 4.6 yards a carry over the last two seasons in New England, but he won't see enough opportunities to rack up Fantasy points due to the Patriots' committee approach to the running back position. Having to share ball with Kevin Faulk, Laurence Maroney and Fred Taylor, Morris doesn't figure to be more than a No. 5 Fantasy RB. But he could be a nice mid-season waiver wire pick up.
News: New England was playing from behind immediately in the Wild Card playoff loss to Baltimore on Sunday. Because of that, the team needed to throw the ball more often than they would have liked. That translated into minimal production from the team's four running backs. Kevin Faulk led the way with 52 yards on 14 carries. He added six receptions for 37 yards. Sammy Morris rushed once for 9 yards and had three grabs for 15. Laurence Maroney had one carry for 2 yards and made no catches. Finally, Fred Taylor rushed twice for 1 yard.
Analysis: Morris finished the regular season with 319 rushing yards, 180 receiving yards and two total touchdowns. He clearly wasn't a major part of the Patriots' offensive attack and isn't likely to be a viable option heading into 2010.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris started Sunday's game at Houston but did little. Morris had seven carries for 9 yards and three catches for 13 yards.
Analysis: Morris started with Laurence Maroney and Kevin Faulk inactive. Morris will get his share of carries in the playoffs, but he has minimal Fantasy value since the Patriots continue to rotate running backs. Don't count on Morris for much production heading into the playoffs.
News: With RBs Kevin Faulk and Laurence Maroney inactive for Week 17 at Houston, Sammy Morris is expected to get the bulk of carries.
Analysis: Morris should be considered a very nice starting option in deeper leagues that are still going in Week 17. Problem is, we're not sure how much of the surrounding offensive talent in New England will be helping his cause.
News: You already know that Pats head coach Bill Belichick won't say anything about who's playing for how long when his team plays at Houston in Week 17. The Patriots are secured a home game next week with no chance at a bye, and the only way they can attain the No. 3 seed as opposed to the No. 4 seed is if they win. But the Patriots have quite a history of playing deep into the season even with playoff ramifications limited or locked up: Only once in their last six playoff appearances (all under Belichick) have the Patriots rested their starters in the season finale. That includes their 2007 run to a perfect regular season when they took on the Giants in Week 17. "Close game, blowout, we get behind, I'm expecting to play the whole game," QB Tom Brady said this week.
Analysis: There's elevated risk in starting any Patriots players in Week 17 since the team could opt to bench their starters without warning. But they could also deliver. Our hunch? Expect at least a half from Brady, Randy Moss and Wes Welker with the typical unreliable running back rotation from the Patriots. If that's good enough for you, start them in Week 17. Otherwise, consider other options before going with any of these guys since they could seriously disappoint. Check out what else we have to say about players on playoff-bound teams who might rest in Week 17.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris took over for the benched Laurence Maroney on Sunday against Jacksonville and played well. Maroney was benched after losing a fumble at the goal line in the first quarter, and Morris came on with 12 carries for 95 yards and a touchdown and one catch for 3 yards.
Analysis: The Patriots might decide to lean on Morris in Week 17 at Houston with Maroney dealing with fumble issues. Consider Morris a sleeper in the season finale and add him where available. But also keep in mind that the Patriots still have Kevin Faulk, and Fred Taylor also returned in Week 16 against the Jaguars. Faulk had six carries for 41 yards, and Taylor had 11 carries for 35 yards.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris rushed four times for 13 yards and caught a 2-yard pass in a Week 15 win over the Bills.
Analysis: Morris continues to share carries with Kevin Faulk behind Laurence Maroney in New England and has minimal Fantasy value heading into Week 16 vs. Jacksonville.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris ran six times for 35 yards in a Week 14 win over Carolina. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: Morris continues to share carries with Kevin Faulk behind Laurence Maroney in New England and has minimal Fantasy value heading into Week 15 at Buffalo.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris ran nine times for 40 yards and caught two passes for 25 yards in a Week 13 loss at Miami.
Analysis: Morris continues to back up Laurence Maroney and he should get a decent amount of touches the rest of this season if he can remain healthy. However, he really is only worth a bench spot in deeper PPR leagues for Week 14 vs. Carolina.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris (knee) went through limited practice all week as the team prepares for Week 13 at Miami. Morris returned to action in Week 12 against the Saints after missing four games with a knee sprain but had a minimal role behind starter Laurence Maroney.
Analysis: Don't be surprised if Morris is on the injury report for the rest of the season. And, don't be surprised to see him play more as a fullback and lose more possible reps when Fred Taylor comes back. Consider Morris a low-end reserve going forward.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris (knee) went through a limited practice Wednesday and Thursday as the team prepares for Week 13 at Miami. Morris returned to action in Week 12 against the Saints after missing four games with a knee sprain.
Analysis: Don't be surprised if Morris is on the injury report for the rest of the season. However, he is good enough to play. Unfortunately, in his absence, Laurence Maroney has passed him on the depth chart. Morris is at best a No. 4 Fantasy RB or flex option for Week 13.
News: New England RB Sammy Morris was finally back in action for the Patriots on Monday night at New Orleans in Week 12. Morris needs to continue to work his way back into rhythm in the running game as he was limited to five carries for 18 yards.
Analysis: Morris has been out since rushing for 68 yards in Week 5 against Denver on 17 carries. After such an absence, Morris wasnt much of a factor for the Patriots running behind Laurence Maroney in Week 12. Until he proves a dangerous part of the running game once again we can only say he has limited low-end Fantasy value for Week 13 at Miami.
News: New England RB Sammy Morris (knee) is active for Week 12 on Monday night at the Saints.
Analysis: Morris missed extended action for New England but is finally able to return. We're not sure what his role will be with the team yet so don't use him in Week 12 at the Saints.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris (knee) was limited in practice all week in preparation for Monday night's Week 12 game in New Orleans and is listed as questionable.
Analysis: Morris appears to be getting closer and closer to a return to action, but the fact this game is the last one of the week, you should just probably go with a healthier option instead of risking a zero.
News: Patriots RBs Sammy Morris (knee) and Fred Taylor (ankle) are both inactive for Week 11 vs. N.Y. Jets. Morris was questionable coming into the game, while Taylor was already ruled out.
Analysis: Morris was practicing during the week, but it just didn't seem as though he was ready to return. Taylor's return date is still undetermined, but the Patriots are holding out hope he will be back this season. Keep both players reserved for Week 11.
News: New England RB Sammy Morris was limited in practice all week as the team prepares for its Week 11 game against the Jets. He is considered questionable for the game and is likely a game-time decision.
Analysis: Morris has not played in each of the Pats' past three games. He could be back Week 11 but will not be a recommended Fantasy option. If he returns, he'll likely have to split carries with Laurence Maroney and wouldn't get the lion's share probably.
News: New England RB Sammy Morris, RB Fred Taylor, DL Jarvis Green, LB Eric Alexander, DL Ty Warren and DB Shawn Springs have been ruled out of the team's Week 10 game at Indianapolis.
Analysis: Morris and Taylor have a shot to put up some numbers once they're healthy enough to return, but the rest of these players have little to no Fantasy value.
News: New England RB Sammy Morris has been listed as inactive for the team's Week 10 game at Indianapolis with a knee injury.
Analysis: Morris has not played in each of the Pats' past two games and it isn't surprising to see him out again in Week 10. Morris is not likely going to be back until at least Week 11, so all Fantasy owners can do is continue to hang on to him. When he returns, he'll likely have to split carries with Laurence Maroney.
News: New England RB Sammy Morris (knee) was not able to practice on Wednesday or Thursday but did return to practice in a limited fashion on Friday as the team prepares for its Week 10 game against the Colts. He is considered questionable for the contest.
Analysis: Morris has not played in each of the Pats' past two games and could be out again Week 10. Morris is not likely going to be back until at least Week 11, so all Fantasy owners can do is continue to hang on to him. When he returns, he'll likely have to split carries with Laurence Maroney.
News: The Patriots have listed the following players as inactive for Week 9 vs. Miami: WR Julian Edelman, RB Fred Taylor, RB Sammy Morris, CB Jonathan Wilhite and LB Eric Alexander.
Analysis: Edelman, Taylor and Morris were declared out earlier this week, so you should have already made plans to be without them. The other guys on this list have no Fantasy value.
News: The Boston Herald reports that RB Sammy Morris will be back on the field in two weeks for New England. The veteran rusher hurt his knee in Week 6 and hasn't played since.
Analysis: If you have the roster space to use on a player who will carry some value as a starter in a couple of weeks, take a shot on Morris -- he should at least get a portion of the carries from Laurence Maroney upon his return, possibly in Week 11. He's not expected to play Week 9 against the Dolphins.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris (knee) did not practice Wednesday or Thursday as the team prepares for Week 9 vs. Miami. The Patriots were on a bye in Week 8 and Morris has not played since injuring his knee early in Week 6.
Analysis: The Patriots aren't going to tip their hat with Morris' status, so it is really a guessing game. But we aren't betting on the veteran running back to suit up at this point. Keep Morris reserved in Fantasy until further notice.
News: The Patriots have announced the inactives for their Week 7 game vs. Tampa Bay in London: WR Julian Edelman, RB Fred Taylor, CB Terrence Wheatley, RB Sammy Morris and DT Ron Brace.
Analysis: The Fantasy-viable guys in this group -- Edelman, Taylor and Morris -- were declared out earlier this week, so hopefully you already benched them. The other guys can continue to be ignored.
News: The Boston Globe reports that Patriots RB Sammy Morris did not travel with the team to London and thus is not expected to play in their Week 7 game vs. Tampa Bay. Morris hurt his knee early in Week 6 action and was replaced by Laurence Maroney.
Analysis: Expect Maroney to see the strong majority of carries against the Bucs in Week 7 with BenJarvus Green-Ellis filling in. They've got a great matchup against the Bucs' 31st-ranked run defense. As for Morris, keep him reserved in Fantasy play unless you can find someone good off waivers to replace him with on your roster. Assuming he comes back relatively soon, he still carries some value to help Fantasy owners.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris is yet to return to practice after hurting his left knee on the team's third offensive play against the Titans in Week 6. Is coach Bill Belichick confident he'll play again this season? "Sure," he said on Tuesday. "If the player wasn't going to be back during the season, then we'd place him on injured reserve." Morris is considered questionable for Week 7.
Analysis: Well, at least that gives us something to go on, though the Patriots are keeping all information on Morris close to the vest, as usual. You'll want to keep an eye on his status throughout the week, because if he's practicing and looks like he'll play, he has some sleeper appeal against a Buccaneers defense that allowed 250 rushing yards to the Panthers in Week 6.
News: The Patriots, as expected, gave no update on RB Sammy Morris, who left Sunday's game against the Titans with a knee injury in the first quarter and did not return. "We'll take a look at him today," coach Bill Belichick said Monday. "There's always a little more information a day or two days after the game, after we get a chance to see where things are at 24 to 48 hours after. We'll do that like we normally do, and assess his availability for practice and ultimately at the end of the week for the following game."
Analysis: Keep an eye on Morris and see what happens heading into Week 7 at Tampa Bay. When healthy, Morris is a No. 3 Fantasy RB. If Morris is out and with Fred Taylor (ankle) still hurt, Laurence Maroney could be considered a sleeper against the Bucs, who just allowed over 250 rushing yards to Carolina in Week 6.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris injured his left knee on the team's opening drive Week 6 against the Titans. Morris banged up his knee after hauling in a 3-yard pass from quarterback Tom Brady. He could not put any weight on the knee as he was taken off the field. The team provided no update on his condition after the 59-0 win.
Analysis: It was a real shame Morris went down early against Tennessee since the Titans defense was all banged up and it was a great matchup for the Patriots running backs. Morris was starting for the injured Fred Taylor (ankle). Injuries always seem to be an issue for Morris. Continue to keep tabs on his progress leading up to Week 7 against the Bucs.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris will take on the Titans in Week 6. Tennessee has the third-ranked run defense in the league, but that stat is inflated a little because they're so bad against the pass.
Analysis: Tennessee is a mess right now, but Morris might not be used as much as he was last week (19 touches) if New England can hit Randy Moss and Wes Welker all day. Of course, if DB Cortland Finnegan can get back on the field, that might well change things a bit. Consider Morris a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy RB for Week 6.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris, who started for the injured Fred Taylor (ankle), led the team with 17 carries for 68 yards during a Week 5 loss to the Broncos. His longest carry went for 19 yards. Morris also had two catches for 39 yards and totaled 107 yards on the afternoon. Unfortunately, he failed to find the end zone.
Analysis: Morris has been in a starting position before, so he will have no problems filling in for Taylor. However, his biggest hurdle is to remain healthy. He gets a real test in Week 6 against the Titans. Tennessee has one of the best run defenses in the NFL, so consider Morris a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy RB for Week 6.
News: Patriots RB Fred Taylor will likely need ankle surgery after hurting himself on the final play of Sunday's game against Baltimore. A timetable for his return remains uncertain. Expect Sammy Morris and Laurence Maroney to see the biggest boost in touches with Kevin Faulk continuing to play a similar pass-catching role out of the backfield.
Analysis: The injury should keep Taylor sidelined for at least a few weeks, but more will be known after he undergoes the procedure. Morris saw six carries for 21 yards in Week 4 against Baltimore, but he did find the end zone and also caught five passes for 35 yards. Maroney got seven carries for six yards against the Ravens. Neither should be thought of as anything more than a potential injury or bye week replacement option until someone can break out, but both players are worth taking a gamble on off the waiver wire. We rank Morris as a better prospect than Maroney for now. We don't recommend Faulk outside of deeper formats.
News: The Providence Journal reports Patriots coach Bill Belichick is fond of RB Sammy Morris, who played well Sunday against Baltimore. Morris had six carries for 21 yards and a touchdown and caught five passes for 35 yards against the Ravens. "Sammy has proven to us over the past couple years that he's a dependable player in every phase of the game, whether it be offense, in the kicking game, running game, passing game," Belichick said. "We have a lot of confidence in him in every one of those [duties], and he's come through for us, time, time and again."
Analysis: Morris has become the second-best Fantasy RB for the Patriots behind Fred Taylor, but Morris might be the better option in PPR leagues. If you're looking for a bye-week replacement in Week 5 at Denver, Morris could be a good option based on how he's played the past couple of weeks.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris had six carries for 21 yards and a touchdown and caught five passes for 35 yards Sunday against the Ravens.
Analysis: Morris had the best day of the Patriots running backs with 56 total yards. Still, Fred Taylor, Laurence Maroney and Kevin Faulk each had more than five carries. Morris is worth owning in deep leagues at this point, but don't plan on starting him in any formats in Week 5 at Denver.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris, who was barely used in the first two games this season, managed to contribute 62 yards in Week 3. He will try to help out again in Week 4 against the Ravens, who have the league's best rushing defense.
Analysis: Morris is stuck behind Fred Taylor at the moment, along with Kevin Faulk and Laurence Maroney. Morris should only be starting in super-deep PPR leagues for Week 4.
News: In the Patriots Week 3 win vs. the Falcons, RB Sammy Morris had 16 yards on five carries but added 46 yards on three catches.
Analysis: Morris continues to post poor totals as part of the Patriots' rushing team. His team hosts the Ravens and their run-stuffing defense in Week 4, so continue to keep Morris planted on Fantasy benches and waiver wires for the upcoming matchup.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris had two carries for four yards and one catch for 14 yards in a Week 2 loss to the Jets.
Analysis: Morris has been seeing less carries than Fred Taylor and Laurence Maroney in the Patriots rushing attack, but he can pitch in now and again with a couple of touches and a few catches. Stash him in deeper leagues for the time being, but don't start him in any formats at this point.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris was used in Week 1's win over the Bills on Monday night. Only, it was as a blocker. Morris did not get any carries or catches and failed to stat on Monday night. Wide receiver Sam Aiken also played but went without a catch.
Analysis: Morris was not involved in the offense as the carries went to Laurence Maroney, Fred Taylor and Kevin Faulk. Until he gets involved in that rotation, he should be benched in all Fantasy leagues, if he's owned at all. Do not use him Week 2 against a tough Jets defense. Aiken should not be owned in Fantasy at this time.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris (finger) is active for Week 1 on Monday night against the Bills in New England.
Analysis: Morris is ready to play Monday and should be involved on offense, but how much remains to be seen since New England is carrying four other running backs. Morris could be used as a flex option in deeper formats. Morris had 24 carries for 85 yards in one game against the Bills last season.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris (finger) went through limited practice reps Thursday and Friday as the team prepares for Week 1 vs. Buffalo. Morris, who played in just one preseason game, told the Boston Globe he believes he will play Monday. "I've been doing this a while. My body feels in good shape, so I'll go from there," Morris said.
Analysis: Morris sounds ready to play Monday and should be involved on offense, but how much remains to be seen since New England is carrying four other running backs. If Morris is active for Week 1 against the Bills, he could be used as a flex option in deeper formats. Morris had 24 carries for 85 yards in one game against the Bills last season.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris did not play in Thursday's preseason finale against the Giants because of an undisclosed injury. He missed the last two games and finished the preseason with 12 carries for 45 yards.
Analysis: Even though the Patriots have a crowded backfield, Morris is expected to be one of the backs that sees a decent amount of carries on a weekly basis. However, we are unsure of his Week 1 status since New England likes to play injuries news close to the vest. If Morris is active for Week 1 against the Bills, he could be used as a flex option in deeper formats. Morris had 24 carries for 85 yards in one game against the Bills last season.
News: Patriots RBs Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk were held out of the team's third preseason game at the Redskins with undisclosed injuries.
Analysis: Even though the Patriots are mum on these injuries, we don't believe them to be serious. We might not see them in the team's preseason finale because the team might prefer to keep them fresh for the regular season. Morris should be part of a congested backfield for the Patriots and be serviceable as a reserve RB in standard formats while Faulk could be as good as a low-end NO. 3 RB in deeper PPR leagues since he's got a good role as a reliable third-down back for New England. Both are worth late-round picks.
News:Sammy Morris led all Patriots running backs with 12 carries for 45 yards during the preseason opener against Philadelphia Thursday. Morris, whose longest run went for 16 yards, also added one catch for 14 yards.
Analysis: Morris has produced well for the Patriots the last two seasons in what has become a crowded backfield. He totaled 727 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in 2008, while adding 17 catches for 161 yards in 13 contests. New England once again has a logjam of backs, but Morris is expected to be one of the feature runners. Consider him a nice No. 4 Fantasy RB Draft Day.
News: Patriots RB Fred Taylor was excited for his first day of training camp Thursday in New England. "It feels great," he said. "I'm privileged. We're in a recession and I have a job, so it feels great. It's a different experience." Taylor is competing with Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk, Laurence Maroney and BenJarvus Green-Ellis for playing time. Patriots coach Bill Belichick didn't give any hints who has the edge for the starter's spot. "Well, we feel like we have good competition at the running back position," Belichick said. "Those guys all really have proven themselves. Fred, of course, has had a tremendous career. Laurence has done a lot of great things for us. He played very well at the end of the '07 season and then he kind of had a short season last year. Sammy Morris has done a great job for us as has Kevin. [Green-Ellis], when he had an opportunity to play last year, was a good performer. So we'll let the players that we have in the backfield, put them out there, let them compete and let them play. I would think we would be able to get production from all of them because that's what we've gotten in the past."
Analysis: It sounds like you will get the dreaded RBBC with the Patriots, which means all these guys will be sharing carries. If you're looking to rank them, take Taylor first, Morris second, Faulk third, Maroney fourth and Green-Ellis last. At best, the No. 1 Patriots RB will be a No. 3 option, so only consider them as late-round fliers for reserves.
News: New England RB Sammy Morris carried 24 times for 85 yards in Week 17's win over the Bills but the Pats failed to make the playoffs regardless. Morris was the bulk of New England's offense on a windy day where passing was almost impossible.
Analysis: Morris is nice option as a No. 2 Fantasy RB heading into next season after rushing for 727 yards and seven touchdowns on the year as part of a mess of running backs used by the Pats this season. Morris ultimately showcased himself as the team's top back and should return as thus in 2009.
News: New England RB Sammy Morris had 15 carries for 88 yards and two carries for 45 yards Sunday against Arizona. Morris had a three-game scoring streak snapped.
Analysis: Morris still posted solid stats and remains a good Fantasy option against Buffalo in Week 17. Morris missed the earlier game against Buffalo but should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy RB against the Bills.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris now has three touchdowns in his past three games and could find the end zone again this week against Arizona. The Cardinals allow 106.7 rushing yards per game with 10 touchdowns and are making the dreaded cross-country trip for a 1 p.m. ET start.
Analysis: Don't worry about Morris losing touches to Kevin Faulk and LaMont Jordan. Morris will get enough carries to be a successful Fantasy option against the Cardinals in this matchup in a game where weather could be an important factor. Consider Morris a No. 2 Fantasy RB this week.
News: RB Sammy Morris rushed for more than 100 yards for the second time this season on Sunday with a 117-yard performance against the Raiders in Week 15. His longest run went for 35 yards and he did get into the end zone for a touchdown. Morris got the 100 yards despite sharing carries with Lamont Jordan and Kevin Faulk.
Analysis: Morris got only two more carries than Jordan had and was only slightly more productive. Since he'll likely continue to split touches three ways, he doesn't have much of a chance of putting up similar numbers, especially if he goes against a solid defense. The Patriots go against the Cardinals in Week 16, so think of Morris as a No. 2 or No. 3 back.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris hasn't done much since coming back from a knee injury that cost him three games, but he has scored two touchdowns the past two weeks against Pittsburgh and Seattle. He should make it three in a row this week at Oakland since the Raiders are among the worst run defenses in the NFL, allowing almost 159 rushing yards per game with 18 touchdowns on the season.
Analysis: Kevin Faulk could also play well this week and would make a solid flex option in all leagues. You can think of Morris more as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy running back, and the Patriots should be able to run over the Raiders as most teams have this season.
News: Running back Sammy Morris leaped into the end zone from 1 yard on fourth down with 2:44 remaining and the Patriots rallied past the Seattle Seahawks 24-21 on Sunday. Morris finished with 11 carries for 36 yards and the score to lead the Patriots in rushing.
Analysis: Morris has touchdowns in two straight games for the Patriots and has emerged as their No. 1 option. He looks like he's finally relinquished the rust from his last injury and could be a decent No. 2 or 3 option in Fantasy in Week 15 at Oakland.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris rushed 10 times for 45 yards in Week 13's loss to the Steelers. Morris scored a touchdown on the ground in the 1st quarter. Morris scored the game's first touchdown on a 2-yard run. He also caught one pass for 12 yards.
Analysis: Morris scored for the first time since Oct. 20 against the Broncos -- a span of six games. He looks like he's finally relinquished the rust from his last injury and could be a decent 'flex' option in Fantasy in Week 14 at Seattle. The Seahawks have a terrible defense and he and Kevin Faulk could be in line for nice games.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris ran eight times for 35 yards and caught two passes for 14 yards in a Week 12 win at Miami. He also lost a fumble.
Analysis: Morris still looked a little rusty in his second game back from injury, and he split carries with Kevin Faulk 50/50. This kind of committee is probably going to continue for the time being in Week 13 against the Steelers, and you probably don't want to start Morris in any leagues with that matchup.
News: In a pivotal AFC East game in Week 12, Sammy Morris and the Patriots will play against his old team, the Dolphins, in Miami. Morris was back after a three game absence in Week 11 against the Jets and was limited to five carries for 14 yards.
Analysis: The matchup isn't a good one for the hobbled Morris, who avoided the injury report this week and could start but continue working in a committee situation with Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Miami ranks ninth vs. the run with just five rushing TDs allowed this season and only one 100-yard game allowed all year. Consider other options besides Morris in Week 12 since there's no guarantee to the amount of playing time he'll get this week anyway.
News: New England RB Sammy Morris was back after a three game absence in Week 11 against the Jets. New York won 34-31 in overtime and Morris was limited to five carries for 14 yards. Most of them came early in the game.
Analysis: Morris was used sparingly, as expected, in his first game back from injury. He should continue to be worked into the offense slowly and will still split time with Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis in Week 12 at Miami. Morris rushed nine times for 27 yards the last time the Patriots played the Dolphins and we don't consider him a worthy Fantasy option next week.
News: New England RB Sammy Morris is active for Thursday's Week 11 game against the Jets in Foxboro. Morris is expected to start for the Patriots with BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Kevin Faulk coming off the bench.
Analysis: Both Green-Ellis and Faulk have performed admirably in Morris' stead and you can expect New England to limit Morris in his first game back despite getting a starting nod. It is good news for everyone involved that Morris is back but we still recommend keeping him on your bench for at least one more week. Green-Ellis and Faulk are definitely better Fantasy options.
News: After missing three weeks with a knee injury, Patriots RB Sammy Morris might finally play. The veteran rusher practiced on a limited basis this week and is listed as questionable for Week 11 vs. the Jets. While Morris has missed time, running backs BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Kevin Faulk have played admirably in his place. The Boston Herald doesn't expect Morris to be anything more than an emergency option in case something happens to Green-Ellis and Faulk.
Analysis: Play it safe with Morris and don't start him unless you're desperate for a running back, and that's only if he's active. Like we do with all NFL games, we'll have the official inactive list for the game about an hour before kickoff on Thursday night (figure 7:15 p.m. ET). Green-Ellis and Faulk are definitely better Fantasy options since Morris hasn't gone full-go in practice yet.
News: The Patriots participation report Tuesday for Week 11 against the Jets on Thursday listed RB Sammy Morris (knee) as limited in practice. This was an upgrade from the past three weeks when Morris did not participate at all.
Analysis: Keep an eye on what happens with Morris heading into Thursday's game. When healthy, he would be a No. 3 Fantasy RB, but Morris would now be sharing carries with BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Kevin Faulk. LaMont Jordan (calf) remains out and did not practice Tuesday.
News: As expected, Patriots RB Sammy Morris (knee) will miss Week 10 against Buffalo. Morris has now missed the past three games with the injury. LaMont Jordan (calf) is also out. Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis will share carries against the Bills.
Analysis: Keep Morris reserved for Week 10 and hope he can return in Week 11. When healthy, he is a No. 3 Fantasy option, but he will likely share carries with Jordan, Faulk and Green-Ellis when all are healthy.
News: The New England Patriots could again be short-handed at running back when they face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Sammy Morris did not practice all week and is listed as doubtful. LaMont Jordan sat out practice the last two days and is listed as questionable. That has left the Patriots with only three healthy backs: Kevin Faulk, Heath Evans and free agent rookie BenJarvus Green-Ellis.
Analysis: Jordan has missed the last four games with a calf injury and Morris the last two with a knee injury. It's probably best for Fantasy owners to look to healthier alternatives outside of Jordan and Morris. As for Faulk and Ellis, consider Faulk a low-end No. 2 Fantasy RB and Ellis a high-end No. 3 Fantasy RB or 'flex' option. Evans has little to no Fantasy value.
News: The Patriots were without Sammy Morris (knee) and LaMont Jordan (calf) in practice Thursday, and it appears like both will miss Week 10 against Buffalo. With Morris and Jordan out, Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis are expected to share the load against the Bills.
Analysis: Keep Morris and Jordan reserved for Week 10 because it sounds like they will be out. Consider Faulk a No. 2 Fantasy option, with Green-Ellis a No. 3 or flex Fantasy RB.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris did not practice Wednesday because of his knee injury. Morris has now missed the past two games with the injury and will be listed as questionable for Week 10 against Buffalo.
Analysis: Continue to keep an eye on Morris throughout the week, but don't plan on using him in Week 10 against Buffalo. It's likely he will miss this game as well with the knee injury. Hopefully he can return, but don't expect to have him back.
News: New England RB Sammy Morris is officially inactive and out for Week 9 at Indianapolis. His reps are expected to be split among Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis; running back LaMont Jordan also was listed as out for the game.
Analysis: Morris should remain benched in all leagues as he figures to be the primary running back for the Patriots upon his return to health. When that will happen remains to be seen, but you can expect it not to come in Week 9. Faulk looks like the best Patriots running back to lean on in a matchup against the Colts' weak run defense.
News: After not practicing all week, the Patriots downgraded RB Sammy Morris (knee) to out on Saturday, making him inactive for the team's Week 9 battle at Indianapolis. His reps are expected to be split among Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis; running back LaMont Jordan also was downgraded to out Saturday.
News: After not practicing all week, the Patriots listed RB Sammy Morris (knee) as doubtful for Week 9 at Indianapolis. His reps are expected to be split among Kevin Faulk, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and possibly LaMont Jordan, who is questionable for the contest.
Analysis: Morris should remain benched in all leagues as he figures to be the primary running back for the Patriots upon his return to health. When that will be remains to be seen, but you can expect it not to come in Week 9. Faulk looks like the best Patriots running back to lean on in a matchup against the Colts' weak run defense.
News: New England RB Sammy Morris was not present for the media portion of Thursday's practice with the Patriots. On Tuesday, Morris claimed he'll be back this season and said he's working towards that end. With Morris and LaMont Jordan (calf) sidelined last week against the Rams, the Patriots had just three healthy running backs: Kevin Faulk, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Heath Evans.
Analysis: It sounds like Morris will miss the game against the Colts, which could open the door for Jordan to play if he's healthy or Faulk and Green-Ellis to carry the load again. It's hard to guage who will be the No. 1 option for the Patriots with the injury to Morris, but whoever it is will have a good matchup since the Colts struggle to defend the run. For now, keep Morris reserved unless he practices this week, but don't plan on dumping him unless the Patriots say his season is over.
News: The Boston Globe reports Patriots RB Sammy Morris expressed frustration Tuesday that he is sidelined after gaining a career-high 138 yards against the Broncos Oct. 20, but he indicated his knee injury will not threaten the rest of his season. Morris declined to detail his injury or place a timetable on his return. He only said "I'm working my way back." With Morris and LaMont Jordan (calf) sidelined last week against the Rams, the Patriots had just three healthy running backs: Kevin Faulk, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Heath Evans. Coach Bill Belichick did not reveal Tuesday whether Morris or Jordan would be ready for action Sunday at Indianapolis.
News: Patriots RBs Sammy Morris and LaMont Jordan were both named among the inactives for New England's Week 8 game vs. St. Louis. Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis will likely split the bulk of the carries in the backfield, with Heath Evans maybe getting a few carries here and there.
Analysis: Both Morris and Jordan were doubtful coming in, so this news isn't a huge surprise. The Patriots are now down to a third-down back in Faulk, a fullback in Evans and a scout team rusher in Green-Ellis. All three are low-end options, with Evans the worst of the bunch and Faulk the best, especially in leagues where receptions count.
News: The Patriots listed RBs Sammy Morris and LaMont Jordan as doubtful for Week 8 vs. the Rams. That leaves Kevin Faulk, Benjarvus Green-Ellis and fullback Heath Evans as the only healthy running backs left on the roster.
Analysis: Starting any of these three rushers is a risky proposition since there's no rhyme or reason to how the Pats use their backs. That goes double when they're down to a third-down back in Faulk, a fullback in Evans and a scout team rusher in Green-Ellis. All three are low-end options, with Evans the worst of the bunch and Faulk the best, especially in leagues where receptions count. Obviously, Morris and Jordan need to remain benched in all leagues.
News: New England's Sammy Morris (knee) and LaMont Jordan (calf) were both held out of Thursday's practice. All of a sudden, it doesn't look like either is a strong bet to face St. Louis in Week 8.
Analysis: Although Bill Belichick called Morris day to day on Tuesday of this week, he hasn't practiced yet and should be considered an injury risk to start against the Rams. Assuming his knee injury doesn't end up serious, he'll continue to play the leading role out of the Patriots' backfield, meaning he deserves a roster spot in all Fantasy leagues. Track his progress over the week, because if he can play, you'll want to start him Week 8 against the Rams.
News: New England RB Sammy Morris couldn't practice on Wednesday and is listed as questionable for Week 8 against the Rams.
Analysis: Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Tuesday that Morris is day to day so we expect he'll be fine against the Rams. Assuming his knee injury doesn't end up serious, he'll continue to play the leading role out of the Patriots' backfield, meaning he deserves a roster spot in all Fantasy leagues. Track his progress over the week, because if he can play, you'll want to start him Week 8 against the Rams.
News: During a conference call with the media Tuesday, Patriots coach Bill Belichick would not get into details over the knee injury RB Sammy Morris suffered before halftime in Week 7 vs. Denver. Before the injury, Morris had 138 yards rushing and a touchdown. "I really can't say too much about it," the coach said. "When we go to practice (Wednesday) we'll see where all the players are. ... We will just have to wait and see on a day-to-day basis how everybody is doing. So we'll call Sammy day-to-day."
Analysis: We're left to speculate until the Patriots offer something more concrete via their injury report. Ultimately, you can't expect Morris to play this way every week as he had a sensational matchup against a bad Broncos defense. Assuming his knee injury doesn't end up serious, he'll continue to play the leading role out of the Patriots' backfield, meaning he deserves a roster spot in all Fantasy leagues. Track his progress over the week, because if he can play, you'll want to start him Week 8 against the Rams.
News: RB Sammy Morris looked like he had taken firm hold of the Patriots running game following the loss of Laurence Maroney, rushing for a season-high 138 yards on 16 carries in the first half Week 7 against the Broncos. He even scored a touchdown on a four-yard run in the second quarter. He then hurt his knee and had to leave just before halftime.
Analysis: Tough injury for Morris, who exploded after averaging 3.2 yards per carry over the first five games. Of course, the Broncos haven't exactly made a habit of stopping the run game this season, so you can't expect Morris to play this way every week. Assuming his knee injury doesn't end up serious, he'll continue to play the leading role out of the Patriots' backfield, meaning he deserves a roster spot in all Fantasy leagues. Track his progress over the week, because if he can play, you'll want to start him Week 8 against the Rams.
News: It looks like Laurence Maroney (shoulder) is going to miss another game Monday against Denver, which would give Patriots RB Sammy Morris the start and the majority of carries. The Patriots will likely lean on their running game with Matt Cassel's struggles, and it's a good matchup for Morris. The Broncos allow 137.5 rushing yards per game with seven touchdowns, and last week Maurice Jones-Drew had 22 carries for 125 yards and two touchdowns at Denver. Morris already has three rushing touchdowns this year and does a good job catching the ball with 12 grabs for 90 yards.
Analysis: Consider Morris a low-end No. 2 Fantasy RB against the Broncos and a great flex option. If he's available in your leagues, add him now.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris, filling in for usual starter Laurence Maroney (shoulder), scored his first touchdown in three games Week 6 at San Diego. The touchdown came on a one-yard plunge in the fourth quarter. He finished with 10 rushes for 26 yards and four catches for 49.
Analysis: Morris' yards-per-carry average looks terrible, and it didn't improve with Sunday's performance. Still, he looks like the most reliable Patriots back for Fantasy purposes, if you can consider any of their four options reliable. As part of a deep platoon, consider Morris just a No. 3 Fantasy RB even against a poor Denver defense in Week 7.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris led all New England rushers with 16 carries and 63 yards in a Week 5 win over the 49ers.
Analysis: Even with Laurence Maroney back healthy, Morris got the bulk of the carries in Week 5, although he failed to find the end zone. The Patriots have the truest running back-by-committee in the NFL, and Fantasy owners hate it. That makes Morris and the rest of the running backs in New England risky starts in any leagues heading into Week 6 at San Diego.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris started in place of Laurence Maroney in Week 3 against Miami and rushed for just 27 yards on nine carries. With Maroney expected to play Week 5 against the 49ers, Morris will probably go back to a reserve role.
Analysis: San Francisco is not as good at stopping the run as the Dolphins and for that Morris should have a better game. Still, he'll likely be splitting carries with Maroney and that makes him a low-end No. 2 Fantasy RB in Week 5.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris was held to 27 yards on nine carries in a Week 3 loss to the Dolphins. He also had one catch for zero yards.
Analysis: Morris got the start in Week 3 with Laurence Maroney out injured, but was held in check by a solid Miami defense and the fact the Patriots had to throw the ball to try and come from behind. The Patriots are off in Week 4, so be sure to take Morris out of your lineup.
News: Patriots RB Laurence Maroney was listed among the inactives for New England's Week 3 game with Miami. He came into the game questionable with a shoulder injury.
Analysis: LaMont Jordan, who was listed as doubtful with a foot injury, will likely share carries with Sammy Morris in the Patriots backfield. Morris likely has the more Fantasy value with his health and might be worth tossing in your lineup as a 'flex' option in larger Fantasy formats. Be sure to bench Maroney, of course.
News: The Patriots held RB Laurence Maroney out of practice Wednesday with a shoulder injury suffered in Week 2 at the Jets. He did return and get reps in the game after the injury. If he can't go, Sammy Morris is expected to get the start.
Analysis: If Maroney can't practice all week, he's unlikely to play against the Dolphins, an awesome matchup for whomever runs the ball for the Patriots. If you own Morris, be ready to get him active at a moment's notice. We'll be first to know whether or not he'll start this Sunday on Fantasy Football Today, 11 a.m. ET here on CBSSports.com.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris was held to zero rushing yards on eight carries during a Week 2 win against the Jets, but managed to put six points on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Morris was held to negative gains three times. He finished with two catches for seven yards as well.
Analysis: Morris had a much better Week 1 against Kansas City as he had 10 carries for 53 yards and one touchdown. Laurence Maroney did miss some time with a shoulder injury Week 2, but appeared at the end of the game. If he can't play Week 3 against the Dolphins, Morris could get the start at running back. Until that becomes official, Morris remains a low-end Fantasy RB.
News: Ah, those sneaky Patriots. Right when you're ready to declare Laurence Maroney their best rusher, they give Sammy Morris a heaping helping of reps, along with a carry inside the 5 good for a touchdown. In total, Morris had 10 carries for 53 yards with a touchdown and 34 yards on five catches. Maroney also had 10 carries, but for 51 yards, and with no receptions.
Analysis: Welcome to another season where we're guessing which Patriots RB is the one to start week in and week out. We saw Maroney on the field for the Pats' first two possessions, then Morris started to play more. Expect them to continue splitting reps, with Morris potentially the more intriguing runner. He's actually out there on the waiver wire and is worth an addition since it he's unlikely to stop seeing work. Consider him a low-end No. 3 option at the Jets in Week 2. If anything, the Pats could lean on their run game more if Tom Brady misses significant playing time.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris had five carries for a team-high 24 yards during Friday's preseason game against the Eagles. He now has 10 carries for 34 yards in the preseason.
Analysis: Morris has slowly worked his way back from sternum-clavicle separation that abruptly ended his 2007 season. He has even more backfield company in LaMont Jordan heading into 2008, and has some serious competition to backup Laurence Maroney. For now, only draft Morris in deep leagues with a late-round pick.
News: The Boston Herald reports Patriots RB Sammy Morris, who did not play in the preseason opener, is looking forward to getting into a game and continuing to show that he's past the sternum-clavicle separation. "I don't know if anxious is the word. It's a little more than that," Morris said when asked about the prospects of seeing some time Sunday at Tampa Bay. "For me personally, it's getting back from an injury-shortened season . . . there's a lot of anticipation." Morris indicated he's had no lingering issues from the injury thus far in camp. "I haven't really thought much about it," he said. "I don't feel any pain leftover from the injury. It's more a focus of starting everything again, getting (the season) going."
Analysis: Morris has to get on the field to show he's ready to be the No. 2 back for the Patriots behind Laurence Maroney. With LaMont Jordan on the team and playing well, Morris could be pushed to third string. For now, only draft Morris in deep leagues with a late-round pick.
News:The Sports Xchange notes, one of the more interesting practice drills during training camp with New England is live, goal-line work pitting the first units on both sides of the ball against each other. The Patriots closed practice with such a drill on Thursday and both Sammy Morris and LaMont Jordan had solid, second-effort touchdown runs in the action. Patriots coach Bill Belichick joked of the double-edged nature of the drill afterward, "We win and we lose."
Analysis: Morris and Jordan are both competing to back up starter Laurence Maroney and will also both be vying for goal-line carries. The winner's Fantasy value will increase and especially if they are given the ball around the end zone. Both players have showed well thus far, so no decision has been made. Check back because this is one of the more interesting backup battles since the Patriots figure to score a lot of points.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris showed no ill-effects of the injury that limited him all of last season on the practice field yesterday, hitting the hole hard and effectively picking up blitzing linebackers like rookie Jerod Mayo and veteran Tedy Bruschi, whose attempt to go over the top was turned aside by Morris.
Analysis: Morris will compete with Kevin Faulk, Kyle Eckel and Heath Evans for backup carries behind Laurence Maroney. Consider Morris a good handcuff to Maroney and take a flier on Morris in the latter rounds of most drafts.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris appears fully healed from the freak injury that ended his season prematurely last year, reports the Boston Herald. Morris, who suffered a sternum clavicle separation, feels he'll be ready to go Monday when passing camp starts in Foxboro. Before the injury, Morris had compiled consecutive 100-yard rushing efforts and was the team's leading ball carrier (85 carries, 384 yards, three touchdowns). After he was hurt, Morris was placed on season-ending injured reserve because it was tough to gauge just how long the injury would need to heal. Morris has been working out and lifting weights for several months without any difficulty.
Analysis: Morris will compete with Kevin Faulk, Kyle Eckel and Heath Evans for backup carries behind Laurence Maroney. Consider Morris a good handcuff to Maroney and take a flier on Morris in the latter rounds of most drafts.
News: After his season-ending chest injury in mid-October, there were times when RB Sammy Morris didn't feel he was part of the Patriots. But Monday marked a new beginning for him, reports the Boston Globe. When players convened for the first official day of the team's voluntary offseason program, Morris was right there with them. Morris, who turned 31 Sunday, also feels he has some momentum on his side as he recovers from a sternum clavicle separation. "I'm really pleased with my progress," said Morris, noting that he began lifting weights about six weeks ago. "The doctors say everything looks good and that it was a freak injury, but that guys bounce back from it." Morris's return would bolster a running back group that includes leading rusher Laurence Maroney, do-it-all threat Kevin Faulk, fullback Heath Evans, and second-year man Kyle Eckel.
Analysis: Morris was off to a strong start in 2007 before suffering the injury in the third quarter of the Oct. 14 win at Dallas. He had posted back-to-back 100-yard rushing efforts and was the team's leading rusher (85 carries for 384 yards and 3 TDs) when he went down. Look for Morris to again assume the backup running back duties behind Maroney. He should be drafted as insurance for Maroney and considered a No. 4 Fantasy option at best.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris is trying to get ready for 2008 after being placed on injured reserve with a chest injury following Week 6. Morris played in the first six games, making his only starts against Cleveland and at Dallas, and rushed for 384 yards and three touchdowns on 85 carries, which nearly matched his output (400 yards on 92 carries) last season. In a 34-13 victory Oct. 1 at Cincinnati, Morris gained a season-high 117 yards, marking the second 100-yard game of his career. It was highlighted by a season-high 49-yard run. He followed with a 102-yard performance vs. the Browns before he was injured. Asked how he was doing in his rehab, Morris told the Boston Globe, "A lot better, but it's a process. It's long and boring, but you've got to be patient." As for his prognosis, Morris said, "Just continue the healing process all I can and, like I said, continue to be patient for next year."
Analysis: Morris was a solid backup for Laurence Maroney early in the season. Keep an eye on what the Patriots do this offseason, but if Morris is the No. 2 option again in New England he would be worth a look in deeper Fantasy leagues.
News: The Patriots announced Friday that RB Sammy Morris (chest) was placed on Injured Reserve, ending his 2007 season. Morris hurt himself at Dallas in Week 6 and was unable to return. He finishes 2007 with 384 rush yards and three rushing touchdowns with 35 receiving yards on six catches.
Analysis: Morris can now be safely dropped in all seasonal Fantasy leagues. The Patriots will rely on Laurence Maroney to be its primary rusher with assistance from Kevin Faulk and Heath Evans.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris (chest) did not practice Wednesday or Thursday as the team prepares for Week 9 at Indianapolis. Morris has missed the last two games and has not played since injuring himself Week 6 against the Cowboys.
Analysis: Morris is expected to miss Sunday's game against the Colts and might be sidelined for a few more weeks. Morris did an excellent job filling in for Laurence Maroney (groin) when he was out and emerged as a viable Fantasy RB. There is no telling his role upon his return, but Morris is worth stashing in Fantasy leagues, if you have the room.
News: As expected, Patriots RB Sammy Morris is inactive and out for New England's Week 8 game with the Redskins.
Analysis: Morris is expected to miss a couple of weeks with a chest injury, so make sure you have your backup plan in place. Morris' role might even be reduced when he does return, but with Maroney's injury issues, Morris is certainly worth keeping around on your roster if you have space.
News: Notable inactives from the Redskins-Patriots Week 8 game include: Redskins QB Mark Brunell (No. 3/emergency QB), WR Reche Caldwell, RB/FB Rock Cartwright, CB Fred Smoot and DL Ryan Boschetti. For the Patriots, DB Mel Mitchell, DB Eugene Wilson, RB Sammy Morris, LB Eric Alexander, TE Benjamin Watson and DL Kareem Brown are inactive.
Analysis: Laurence Maroney will start for Sammy Morris while Kyle Brady and Marcellus Rivers will split Ben Watson's reps. Aside from those two, none of the other inactive players should start or be on active rosters in any Fantasy league.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris (chest) is listed as doubtful for Week 8 vs. Washington. He did not practice all week. Morris missed his first game of the season Week 7 and might miss a month worth of games.
Analysis: Don't expect Morris to play Week 8, and it is probably best to start making plans to be without his services for a few more weeks. Morris did an excellent job filling in for Laurence Maroney (groin) the last few weeks and emerged as a viable Fantasy RB. There is no telling his role upon his return, but Morris is worth stashing in Fantasy leagues, if you have the room.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris (chest) did not practice Wednesday or Thursday as the team prepares for Week 8 vs. Washington.
News: As expected, Patriots RB Sammy Morris is inactive and out for New England's Week 7 game with the Miami Dolphins.
Analysis: Morris is expected to miss a couple of weeks with his chest injury, so make sure you have your backup plan in place. With Laurence Maroney back for Week 7, Morris' role could be reduced when he does return, but with Maroney's injury issues, Morris is certainly worth keeping around on your roster if you have space.
News: RB Sammy Morris (chest) is out for Week 7 at Miami. Laurence Maroney, if healthy, will start in Morris' place. Otherwise, Kevin Faulk and Heath Evans will split the rushing duties.
Analysis: Don't expect Morris to play Week 7, and it is probably best to start making plans to be without his services for a few weeks. Morris did an excellent job filling in for Laurence Maroney (groin) the last few weeks and emerged as a viable No. 1 Fantasy RB. There is no telling his role upon his return, but Morris is worth stashing in Fantasy leagues, if you have the room.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris (chest) is listed as doubtful for Week 7 at Miami. He did not practice all week. Reports during the week suggested that Morris will be sidelined for a month after he injured the bone connecting the sternum and clavicle during a Week 6 win over the Cowboys.
Analysis: Don't expect Morris to play Week 7 and it is probably best to start making plans to be without his services for a few weeks. Morris did an excellent job filling in for Laurence Maroney (groin) the last few weeks and emerged as a viable No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy RB. There is no telling his role upon his return, but Morris is worth stashing in Fantasy leagues, if you have the room.
News: The Boston Herald, citing an NFL source, reports that RB Sammy Morris hurt a bone in his chest and will be out at least for Week 7 at Miami and could miss as much as a month. He injured the bone connecting the sternum and clavicle and left Texas Stadium in a sling and in pain. A preliminary diagnosis didn't reveal any broken bones, reports the source. The paper adds that the team hopes Laurence Maroney (groin) will be ready to play at Miami in Week 7, and that the Patriots brought in free-agent RB Kevan Barlow for a workout on Tuesday.
Analysis: Fantasy owners who have Morris should bench him for the time being. Those that have Maroney should stick to the site for the latest on him this week leading up to the game. If he plays, expect him to split reps with Kevin Faulk and Heath Evans, particularly at the goal line. If Maroney misses the game, then Faulk should see the bulk of the work at running back for the Patriots with Evans pitching in. We'll know more as the week goes on. Barlow is at best a Fantasy roster flier at this time.
News: Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Monday that he had no news on the status of RB Sammy Morris, who left the club's Week 6 game at Dallas with what was believed to be a chest injury. Morris totaled 14 yards on 10 carries in the game. "No. Sorry," was all Belichick said when asked for an update on Morris' status on Monday.
Analysis: Morris was playing in place of Laurence Maroney, who has missed three straight games with a groin injury. It is believed that Maroney would be ready to step in for Morris if Morris cannot play. Kevin Faulk and Heath Evans would also see playing time, and those two would play extensively if Maroney was still not able to play. We'll be sure to keep on top of the Patriots' RB situation since whomever plays the most will be a strong option at Miami in Week 7.
News: The Patriots were already without RB Laurence Maroney (groin) Week 6 at Dallas, but it go even worse in the third quarter when RB Sammy Morris, making his third start in place of Maroney, left with a chest injury. His return was doubtful after he was taken into the locker room for X-rays. Morris totaled 14 yards on 10 carries before leaving the game and did not return at any point in the second half. He was replaced by Kevin Faulk.
Analysis: Tough break for the Patriots and Fantasy owners. Morris was doing such a good job in place of Maroney coming into the Dallas game. Continue to follow the injury news out of New England in the coming week. The Patriots play the Dolphins in Week 7, a very favorable matchup for Morris even if Maroney finally returns to action.
News: As expected, Patriots RB Laurence Maroney (groin) is inactive for Week 6 at Dallas. It will be the third straight game that the Patriots will be without their starting running back. Sammy Morris will likely once again net the majority of carries for the Patriots. He has two 100-yard rushing games in Maroney's absence.
Analysis: Morris has done a solid job carrying the load for the Patriots and that trend should continue into Week 7. The Cowboys do pose a tough matchup, but Morris remains a solid No. 2 Fantasy RB.
News: According to the Boston Herald Patriots RB Laurence Maroney will not play Sunday against Dallas. While Maroney made the trip with the team, he will miss his third straight game with a groin injury, according to a source. That means the bulk of the running chores once again will fall on Sammy Morris, who has filled in more than admirably during Maroneys absence. Morris will be going after his third straight 100-yard game.
Analysis: It appears Maroney will be out, but check CBSSports.com prior to setting your lineup to make sure the report is accurate. Even if Maroney does play, Morris would still be a good start this week, so consider using him.
News: The Boston Globe reports that Patriots coach Bill Belichick said the following about RB Laurence Maroney on Friday: "He's making progress, he's doing some things on the field, it will probably be a game-time decision," Belichick said. "He's definitely getting closer."
Analysis: It looks likely that Morris will get another starting shot in Week 6 as he goes for a third-straight 100-yard rushing game. Still, keep an eye on the inactives for the Patriots/Cowboys game on Sunday and have no fear in starting Morris if Maroney is inactive again.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris had 102 yards rushing in Week 5, giving him back-to-back 100-yard rushing games for the first time in his career. Morris has also scored three of the four New England rushing touchdowns this season.
Analysis: Whether Morris will have Laurence Maroney back alongside him in the Patriots backfield this weekend is still to be determined. Either way, Morris is still a low-end No. 1 RB start in Week 6 against a Cowboys defense that is ranked seventh in the NFL.
News: During a Week 5 win over the Browns, Patriots RB Sammy Morris once again received the majority of carries with Laurence Maroney sidelined for the second straight week with a groin injury. Morris carried 21 times for 102 yards. His longest gain went for 13 yards. He also had two receptions for nine yards.
Analysis: Morris went over 100 yards for the second straight week, but failed to score a touchdown. No worries. Considering he has three of the Patriots' four rushing touchdowns this season, he'll still likely see the majority of red zone touches even when Maroney returns. Follow the news out of New England leading up to Week 6 against the Cowboys. If Morris doesn't have to share carries with Maroney, he will likely be a low-end No. 2 Fantasy RB. If he does share, he will likely be a No. 3 Fantasy RB or 'flex' option.
News: The Patriots released their inactives for Week 5 against the Browns on Sunday and for the second straight week they will be playing without starting RB Laurence Maroney, who is sidelined with a groin injury. Expect Sammy Morris to once again to receive the bulk of carries in Maroney's absence. The Browns rushing defense is ranked 30th out of 32 teams in the NFL.
Analysis: Morris had 117 yards rushing and a touchdown last week against Cincinnati, once again in place of Maroney, and has three of the Patriots four rushing touchdowns this year. Morris is ranked ahead of several stud RBs in this week's rankings, and for good reason. He is definitely a low-end No. 1 choice for Week 5.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris had 117 yards rushing and a touchdown last week against Cincinnati and has three of the Patriots four rushing touchdowns this year. The Browns are No. 30 against the run, giving up 160 yards per game. If Laurence Maroney (groin) returns after missing the Bengals game, he could also play a factor this week and is worth starting.
Analysis: Morris is ranked ahead of several stud RBs in this week's rankings, and for good reason. He is definitely a low-end No. 1 choice for Week 5, especially if Maroney can't go.
News: The Cleveland Browns rushing defense is ranked 30th out of 32 teams in the NFL, which means Patriots RBs Laurence Maroney (if he's healthy) and Sammy Morris could run wild in their Week 5 match-up.
Analysis: The Pats are 8-0 when Maroney has 15-plus carries, so if he's ready to go on Sunday you know they will be trying to give the former Minnesota Golden Gopher plenty of the ball. However, Morris put up over 100 yards in Week 4 and will certainly see enough carries to also be a factor. Both will be legitimate No. 2 Fantasy RBs in Week 5.
News: With RB Laurence Maroney (groin) out for Week 4 at Cincinnati, Sammy Morris had a chance to shine against the No. 27 run defense in the NFL. He finished with 21 carries for 117 yards and a touchdown and he also added two receptions for 15 yards.
Analysis: Morris has been really impressive for the Patriots and he might continue to total impressive rushing totals even if Maroney is able to return. There should be plenty of football to go around in Week 5 against the Browns. Morris is a good looking No. 3 Fantasy running back or 'flex' option for this favorable matchup.
News: The New England Patriots have announced Laurence Maroney (groin) has been listed as inactive for Week 4 at Cincinnati, so Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk are expected to shoulder the load in his absence.
Analysis: Morris, who has been a touchdown vulture most of the season, had been splitting carries with Maroney on about a 65-35 basis. Look for Morris to be a solid Fantasy play in Week 4 against a Bengals defense which allowed the Browns to hang 51 on them in Week 2, including 200-plus yards by the lumbering Jamal Lewis.
News: The Patriots will face the Bengals in Week 4, who are No. 27 in run defense and have proven vulnerable on defense the past two weeks against Jamal Lewis and Shaun Alexander.
Analysis: Sammy Morris could be a factor this week since he has two touchdowns the last two weeks. Consider Morris a viable 'flex' option for Week 4.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris rushed 12 times for 46 yards in Week 3 vs. Buffalo, including a 4-yard TD run in the third quarter.
Analysis: Laurence Maroney had 19 carries and made it over the century mark for the first time this season, but he saw Morris get most of the carries down by the goal line, including the TD run. Maroney is still the No. 1 back in New England and will see the majority of the carries and the yards, but Morris can be useful as a 'Flex' option in larger leagues because of his touches near the end zone. Consider him in that role for Week 4 at Cincinnati.
News: Sammy Morris had 10 carries for 51 yards and a touchdown in Week 2 against the Chargers, outperforming Laurence Maroney in terms of Fantasy production. Maroney ended up with 15 carries for 77 yards and no scores.
Analysis: Morris has seen 21 carries in the first two games, which likely doesn't sit too well with Fantasy owners of Maroney who are hoping for 100-yard games, especially down the stretch when the Patriots are protecting big leads. For now, Morris remains useful only in deeper Fantasy leagues. The Patriots host the Bills in Week 3.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris had 11 carries for 54 yards Sunday against the Jets. He did a good job in stealing a few carries from starter Laurence Maroney. Morris also added two catches for 11 yards.
Analysis: Morris is a backup RB in Fantasy Football and should not be started in Week 2 against San Diego. He is a decent reserve to have, however, in case Maroney gets hurt.
News: Patriots RB Sammy Morris started Friday's preseason game against the Bucs in place of the injured Laurence Maroney. Morris rushed the ball nine times for 27 yards and even scored on a two-yard run in the first half.
Analysis: Morris will backup Maroney and should be drafted as insurance in case Maroney can't handle the load as a first-time starter. Consider Morris a low-end Fantasy RB and a late-round draft pick.
News: Despite missing four games with a suspension last year, new Patriots RB Sammy Morris still played in 12 games, carrying the ball 92 times for 400 yards and one touchdown. This year, he has a new task. Maybe Morris will spell second-year running back Laurence Maroney. Maybe not. Yes, the Patriots brought Morris in as their former workhorse, Corey Dillon, was riding out of town. But, no, he's not necessarily Dillon's replacement. Morris is a 6-foot, 220-pound AFC East lifer who's never been a 1,000-yard rusher but can eat up yards, on the ground, catching passes, or on special teams. "He fits right in," said Maroney. "He comes in, he's like a brother. He's like a real good back. I like the way he runs. I talk to him all the time because he's a veteran and I ask him questions sometimes. He fits well."
Analysis: Morris will backup Maroney and should be drafted as insurance in case Maroney can't handle the load as a first-time starter. Consider Morris a low-end Fantasy RB and a late-round draft pick.
News: The Patriots announced the signings of two veterans: TE Kyle Brady from Jacksonville and back up RB Sammy Morris from division-rival Miami. Brady is expected to become the lead blocking tight end for the Patriots while Morris will back up RB Laurence Maroney and contribute on special teams.
Analysis: While both will be surprise touchdown recipients during the year, neither one should receive much consideration in Fantasy play. Morris is worth drafting with a late-round flier at this point by those owners who draft Maroney with a top-25 pick.
News: Several Dolphins did well against the Colts, including RB Sammy Morris (two carries for 19 yards), TE Justin Peelle (two catches for 31 yards), WR Wes Welker (three catches for 23 yards) and WR Derek Hagan (one catch for 6 yards).
Analysis: None of these players have any Fantasy value for 2007.
News: Sammy Morris started in Week 16 against the Jets and he posted 14 rushing yards on six carries and chipped in with four receptions for 23 yards.
Analysis: Morris is not worth using in Week 17 at Indianapolis, as Ronnie Brown (hand) was able to return against the Jets and he ran for over 100 yards. Morris should see less than 10 carries in Week 17 and will be a reserve in 2007 as long as Brown is healthy.
News: According to the Miami Herald, Dolphins head coach Nick Saban said Friday that Sammy Morris will start Monday night and that he is yet to decide how much he will use Ronnie Brown. Brown (hand, questionable) has been able to practice all week.
Analysis: We expect the two running back to split carries in Week 16 vs. the N.Y. Jets, limiting their potential for a big game. Both players will be worthy of a start as a No. 2 RB, but risky ones. Perhaps too risky for the likes of a Fantasy championship week.
News: According to the Sun-Sentinel, Dolphins RB back Ronnie Brown, who returned to practice for the first time since breaking his left hand in the Thanksgiving Day victory over the Lions last month, said he's not limited in any way but would prefer to come off the bench in support of replacement starter Sammy Morris. "For my situation I expect Sammy to start," said Brown, who wore a protective pad underneath his glove. "He's done so well the last few weeks and I haven't practiced." Morris has averaged 83 yards over the past four games.
Analysis: Expect Brown and Morris to share carries, which would limit the value of both. Consider Brown a No. 3 RB and Morris a good flex option if you need help at the position.
News: The Miami Herald reported Tuesday that Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown (hand) says he's been cleared to practice and is hopeful to play vs. the Jets in Week 16. "[The doctor] said it's healing up fine," Brown said. "There's still going to be some risk if I go out there. But it's nothing too major." Sammy Morris had been starting in Brown's place.
Analysis: Monitor Brown's status throughout the week. If he plays, he'll be a good No. 2 Fantasy RB at home against an average Jets run defense. If he doesn't play, then Morris would be a No. 3 option for Week 16.
News: Dolphins RB Sammy Morris had 20 carries for 71 yards and five catches for 12 yards against Buffalo.
Analysis: Morris should be considered a No. 3 RB for Week 16 against the Jets if Ronnie Brown (broken hand) remains unable to play. If Brown plays, Morris would have no Fantasy value.
News: Miami RB Ronnie Brown (hand) is listed as out for Week 15 at Buffalo. Sammy Morris will start in Brown's place.
Analysis: Morris is a nice No. 2 Fantasy RB option based on his projected workload and matchup. Fantasy owners should continue to rest Brown until he returns to action, which may or may not even be this season since Morris is doing so well for the Fins.
News: Dolphins coach Nick Saban said Monday that RB Ronnie Brown (hand) would likely miss Week 15 at Buffalo. That would mean that Sammy Morris would start at running back for the Dolphins in the game. Morris had 25 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown against New England in Week 14. He also had two catches for 39 yards.
Analysis: Morris is a nice No. 2 Fantasy RB option based on his projected workload and matchup. Fantasy owners should continue to rest Brown until he returns to action, which may or may not even be this season since Morris is doing so well for the Fins.
News: Dolphins RB Sammy Morris had 25 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown against New England. He also had two catches for 39 yards.
Analysis: Morris did well in his second start for the injured Ronnie Brown (broken hand). Brown is going to try and return in Week 15 against Buffalo. If that happens, keep Morris reserved. But if Brown is unable to play, consider Morris a solid No. 2 option.
News: Dolphins RB Sammy Morris (ankle) is listed as probable for Week 14 vs. New England.
Analysis: Morris will likely play against the Patriots and should be considered a No. 3 Fantasy RB for Week 14.
News: Dolphins RB Sammy Morris had 12 carries for 47 yards and three carries for 20 yards against Jacksonville in his first start for the injured Ronnie Brown (broken hand).
Analysis: Consider Morris a No. 3 RB for Week 14 against New England.
News: With Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown (broken hand) out for Week 13 against Jacksonville, backup Sammy Morris is ready for his first start this year. Last week against the Lions, Morris finished with 12 carries for 91 yards. Morris, who was suspended earlier this year for four games, has 27 carries for 126 yards this season. "Injuries are a part of this game, and you have to be able to step up and fill in," Morris said. "That's one thing I've always prided myself in. I feel confident in what I bring to the table, and we'll take it as it comes. I'm confident."
Analysis: Consider Morris a No. 3 RB this week. The Jaguars are No. 5 in run defense and have allowed seven rushing touchdowns.
News: Miami Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown had surgery Friday to stabilize a second metacarpal fracture of his left hand. Brown will be evaluated on an ongoing basis. Brown injured his left hand after being tackled in the backfield by Lions rookie linebacker Ernie Sims on Thursday. Brown, who gained 68 yards on 15 carries, left the field for X-rays and didn't return.
Analysis: It is unknown how long or even if Brown will be out. Continue to monitor the situation before using Brown for Week 13 against Jacksonville. If Brown misses any time, Sammy Morris would be the Dolphins starting RB, and he is worth adding at this point.
News: Dolphins RB Sammy Morris had 12 carries for 91 yards against Detroit, mostly in reserve of injured RB Ronnie Brown (hand), who left the game in the third quarter. Morris also lost a fumble.
Analysis: Keep an eye on Brown's status prior to Week 13 against Jacksonville because Morris could have significant value if Brown misses any time. If not, Morris is not worth owning at this time.
News: Dolphins RB Sammy Morris had six carries for 20 yards and two catches for 17 yards against Kansas City.
Analysis: Morris has no Fantasy value at this time.
News: Dolphins RB Sammy Morris had one carry for 3 yards and one catch for minus-2 yards against Chicago.
Analysis: Morris has no Fantasy value at this time.
News: Dolphins RB Sammy Morris had one carry for 5 yards and one catch for 44 yards against Green Bay.
Analysis: Morris has minimal Fantasy value at this time.
News: RB Sammy Morris had two rushing yards on five carries and seven yards receiving on one catch in the Dolphins' 20-17 Week 6 loss to the Jets.
Analysis: Morris is not worth using at this time and should only be owned if RB Ronnie Brown is injured.
News: Dolphins RB Sammy Morris returned from his four-game suspension against New England and had two carries for 5 yards.
Analysis: Morris is not worth using at this time and should only be owned if RB Ronnie Brown is injured.
News: The Dolphins have activated RB Sammy Morris for Sunday's game against New England. Morris was out the first four weeks due to violating the NFL's drug policy. Inactive for the Dolphins are LB Derrick Pope, WR Cliff Russell, DL Jeff Zgonina and DL Kevin Vickerson.
Analysis: Morris should be reserved until he proves something on the field or if RB Ronnie Brown gets hurt. As for the other players, they have no Fantasy value.
News: According to The Miami Herald, Dolphins head coach Nick Saban intends to use running back Sammy Morris during Sunday's game at New England. The team has yet to activate Morris for Sunday's game, but it is expected to happen sometime Saturday. Morris is expected to be immediately thrust into the picture taking over the backup running back spot on the depth chart behind starter Ronnie Brown. Lee Suggs will go from the team's No. 2 to No. 3 RB. The Dolphins have one of the worst running games in the league and hope Morris will be able to provide a spark.
Analysis: No one expected Morris to be utilized so quickly after coming off a four-game suspension. This probably says a lot about how displeased Saban is with the team's running game. Morris should be able to spell Brown a few carries here and there, but he is not expected to carry a whole lot. Keep an eye on Morris, but it is not expected he will be much of a Fantasy option seeing Brown is still going to get the majority of carries.
News: According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Dolphins plan to activate running back Sammy Morris after a four-game suspension on Saturday.
Analysis: It could take a few weeks for Morris to get back in the full swing of things. Unless starter Ronnie Brown goes down with an injury, Morris probably won't be counted on to carry but a few times a game. He is not currently a viable Fantasy option.
News: Dolphins RB Sammy Morris admitted serving a four-game suspension under the NFL's anabolic steroid and related substance policy wasn't easy. Morris, who participated in his first regular-season practice Wednesday, was barred from team headquarters as part of his punishment. Morris was forced to work out on his own, even donning pads and doing drills by himself in a local park. "On more than one occasion, I'm picking up (food) for the kids and I'll realize I'm supposed to be at practice right now," said Morris. "Stuff like that gnawed at me a little bit, but you've got to move forward." Morris should be set to do that against New England, as he is expected contribute as a backup and on special teams against the Patriots.
Analysis: It could take a few weeks for Morris to get back in the full swing of things. However, unless starter Ronnie Brown goes down with an injury, Morris probably won't be counted on to carry but a few times a game. He is not currently a viable Fantasy option.
News: Dolphins FB Sammy Morris returned to the team after serving a four-game suspension for violating the steroids policy. The team received a roster exemption for the time being. Morris should bolster the special teams units as well as the backfield.
Analysis: Morris could receive a handful of carries on a weekly basis, but unless Ronnie Brown goes down with an injury, Morris won't be helpful in Fantasy league play.
News: The league confirmed Saturday that Sammy Morris must sit out the first four games for violating the NFL's steroid policy.
Analysis: Morris was expected to enter this season as the backup to starter Ronnie Brown, filling the role vacated by Ricky Williams, who is serving a one-year suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The little Fantasy value that he had is gone now.
News: Miami running back Sammy Morris will be suspended for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL's steroid policy, two newspapers reported Thursday night. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel and the Palm Beach Post, in stories posted on their websites after the Dolphins defeated St. Louis 29-9 in their preseason finale, both reported that Morris tested positive during the 2005 season for ephedrine, a banned stimulant. Team officials declined comment, citing confidentiality policies, and Morris was not available to reporters in the locker room after the game. He had four carries for 3 yards in Miami's win.
Analysis: Morris was expected to enter this season as the backup to starter Ronnie Brown, filling the role vacated by Ricky Williams, who is serving a one-year suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The little Fantasy value that he had as a late-round pick is diminished with this news.
News: Sammy Morris had a strong performance in last Saturday's 13-10 victory over Tampa Bay, producing 35 yards from scrimmage (32 rushing, three passing) while also scoring on a one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Analysis: Such a performance could help boost confidence that Morris is capable of adequately replacing Ricky Williams as starter Ronnie Brown's backup. He is worth a late-round choice as insurance for owners who land Brown.
News: The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins are confident that Sammy Morris can be effective as the their No. 2 back behind Ronnie Brown.
Analysis: The Herald also stated that the 'Fins aren't guaranteed to add another back before camp, so at this point Morris will remain second on the depth chart.
News: The NFL has suspended Ricky Williams for one year after his appeal of a postive drug test was denied. He will miss the entire 2006 season as a result, which means Ronnie Brown will become Miami's true featured back.
Analysis: Brown now has to be considered a serious breakout candidate. Sammy Morris will move to second on the depth chart and is now worth a late-round choice as insurance for owners who land Brown.
News: The Palm Beach Post reports Sammy Morris could move to second on the depth chart in Miami behind starter Ronnie Brown if Ricky Williams loses his suspension appeal.
Analysis: There has been no set timetable for a decision on Williams, but at this point Fantasy Footballers should consider Morris as a potential late-round choice in drafts.
News: According to reports, Dolphins RB/FB Sammy Morris has re-signed with the team.
Analysis: Morris had a measure of Fantasy value when he backed up Ronnie Brown early in 2005, and would serve in the same role if Ricky Williams loses his appeal for a failed drug test. Consider him for a roster spot only in uber-deep Fantasy leagues that use three or more running backs. He's not expected to make much of an impact statistically.
News: Miami RB/FB Sammy Morris was buried on the depth chart behind Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, gaining only 58 yards and a touchdown with 54 receiving yards. He is a free agent entering the offseason.
Analysis: Perhaps if Morris lands with another team he will carry some Fantasy value, but for now he's an afterthought.
News: With Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams performing well for Miami, reserve RB Sammy Morris hasn't seen playing time recently.
Analysis: Morris does not warrant any Fantasy consideration.
News: Backup Miami RB Sammy Morris had 10 rushing yards and 18 receiving yards vs. Carolina in Week 3.
Analysis: Morris should not be on a Fantasy roster except in deep leagues that start three RBs.
News: Miami RB Sammy Morris was held to just four carries for 23 yards in Sunday's loss to the Jets.
Analysis: Morris has limited Fantasy appeal at this point. He should not be a starter for Week 3 vs. Carolina.
