News: The Chargers released backup quarterback Billy Volek shortly after they signed QB Charlie Whitehurst on Friday, according to a tweet by the team's director of public relations. Before his release, Volek would have earned $2.75 million plus a $750,000 signing bonus this season, according to a tweet by the San Diego Union-Tribune. The swap will save an estimated $1.5 million in cap space for this season.
Analysis: Volek will look for backup work elsewhere. For now he's not worth any Fantasy consideration.
News: San Diego and backup QB Billy Volek agreed to a two-year contract Saturday, bringing the veteran back for sixth season with the club. He hasn't started a game with San Diego, but started 10 games for Tennessee from 2003-05 and has a career passer rating of 84.9.
Analysis: Volek, 35, has played in 13 games with the Chargers, mainly late in games already decided. But after QB Philip Rivers was hurt against the Colts in the 2008 Divisional Playoffs, Volek replaced him and led the Chargers to the victory at Indianapolis. He is not worth selecting in any upcoming Fantasy draft.
News: Chargers backup QB Billy Volek saw some action in mop-up time against the Cardinals in the Week 4 game. The Chargers blew out Arizona 41-10, and Volek entered the game and completed the only pass he attempted for 8 yards.
Analysis: Volek saw the same type of duty in Week 2, when the Chargers beat Seattle in blow-out fashion. He's a good backup QB for the Chargers, but not worth owning in Fantasy leagues unless starting QB Philip Rivers is injured.
News: Chargers backup QB Billy Volek saw mop-up action in Week 2 as San Diego beat up on Jacksonville, 38-13. Volek handed the ball off and took a knee for minus-1 yard rushing.
Analysis: Volek is a solid backup and is not worth owning in Fantasy leagues. Unless something happens to Philip Rivers, Volek will not see much action in 2010.
News: Chargers backup QB Billy Volek was able to participate in full practice for what was considered a walkthrough on Saturday in preparation for Monday night in Kansas City. Volek (knee) is ready to play in the game.
Analysis: Volek has been solid through the years as a backup but that is all he'll be against the Chiefs on Monday night. He has no Fantasy value as we doubt he will be seen in the game.
News: San Diego backup QB Billy Volek entered the Week 17 game against Washington after the first two series of downs for starter Philip Rivers. Volek ended up throwing the game-winning touchdown pass from 2 yards out in the 4th quarter with just seconds remaining to Mike Tolbert. Volek finished 19 for 30 for 216 yards with the touchdown pass and an interception.
Analysis: Volek was solid as Rivers backup in the Week 17 game against Washington but doesnt figure to see the field in the playoffs. The 10-year veteran is nothing but a backup in the NFL and doesnt need to be taken in Fantasy Drafts come 2010-11.
News: San Diego backup QB Billy Volek played the entire fourth quarter Friday at Tennessee with the Chargers dominating the Titans and Philip Rivers getting a chance to rest. Volek did not attempt a pass, but he had three kneel downs to end the game. He finished with minus-3 yards rushing.
Analysis: Volek is normally just an insurance policy in case Rivers gets hurt, but he might see extended action in Week 17 against Washington. The Chargers locked up the No. 2 seed in the AFC with this victory, and Rivers might not play much, if at all. If that happens as expected then Volek would be considered a sleeper for the season finale.
News: Chargers TE Brandon Manumaleuna, RB Jacob Hester, WR Kassim Osgood and QB Billy Volek all dressed, but failed to record an offensive stat in Week 14 against the Cowboys.
Analysis: Most of these players dress as backups for the Chargers and don't regularly stat. It's safe to leave them off Fantasy rosters. The Chargers play the Bengals in Week 15.
News: Chargers TE Brandon Manumaleuna, WR Kassim Osgood, TE Kris Wilson and QB Billy Volek didn't record offensive statistics Week 13 at Cleveland.
Analysis: None of these players ever contributes enough statistically to make an impact in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers.
News: Chargers QB Billy Volek got a few snaps on Sunday in a Week 12 win over the Chiefs. He completed his only pass for 15 yards and lost 2 yards on two carries.

News: Chargers TE Brandon Manumaleuna, RB Michael Bennett, WR Kassim Osgood, TE Kris Wilson and QB Billy Volek didn't record offensive statistics Week 8 against the Raiders.
Analysis: None of these players ever does enough statistically to matter in Fantasy. Leave them all on waivers.
News: Chargers QB Philip Rivers threw three touchdown passes in Week 7 at Kansas City. He three for 268 yards and did not throw an interception in the game, completing 18 of 30 passes. He also rushed twice for 18 yards. Billy Volek enetered the game late, but did not attempt a pass. He took a knee three times and finished the game with three carries for -3 yards.
Analysis: Rivers has thrown for three touchdown passes twice this season. He has not thrown an interception since Week 2 and remains a solid No. 1 QB in all Fantasy formats not having too many huge games yet this season. He could be in line for another big game in Week 8 against a very weak Oakland Raiders team. Continue to start him in all leagues. Volek will continue to play a backup role as long as Rivers is healthy and should remain a backup in all leagues.
News: Chargers receiver Legedu Naanee, WR Kassim Osgood, FB Brandon Manumaleuna, TE Kris Wilson and QB Billy Volek all received no stats on Monday night against the Broncos despite being active for the game. Only Volek did not get off the bench.
Analysis: Naanee doesn't catch the ball enough to warrant Fantasy use and the same goes for the rest of the players listed above. You can leave them all on waivers for Week 7 at Kansas City.
News: Chargers FB Jacob Hester, FB Mike Tolbert, RB Michael Bennett, WR Malcom Floyd, WR Kassim Osgood, TE Brandon Manumaleuna, TE Kris Wilson and backup QB Billy Volek all dressed but failed to record an offensive stat Week 4 at Pittsburgh. Hester did score a touchdown, but it was on a fumble return on special teams and not on offense.
Analysis: Most of these players are backups for the Chargers and are not a big part of the offensive scheme. They have little to no Fantasy value heading into the team's Week 6 game vs. the Broncos (they're on bye in Week 5).
News: Chargers RB Jacob Hester, WR Kassim Osgood, TE Brandon Manumaleuna, TE Kris Wilson and QB Billy Volek all dressed but failed to record an offensive stat Week 3 vs. Miami.

News:Malcom Floyd, Brandon Manumaleuna, Jacob Hester, Kassim Osgood, Billy Volek and Kris Wilson did not record relevant Fantasy stats Week 1 against the Raiders.
Analysis: None of these players have any real Fantasy value, although Floyd is a big play receiver that could eventually be worth picking up at one point. He finished the 2008 regular season with 15 catches for 127 yards and two touchdowns.
News: In the Chargers' win at Tampa Bay in Week 16, TE Kris Wilson, backup QB Billy Volek, FB Mike Tolbert and FB Jacob Hester were active but didn't record any stats.

News: The following Chargers did not record an offensive statistic in Week 11 at Pittsburgh: QB Charlie Whitehurst, QB Billy Volek, RB Jacob Hester and WR Kassim Osgood.
Analysis: None of the players on this list should be considered viable Fantasy option. They are not in a position to contribute regular stats as they aren't in line for regular playing time. They've got some depth chart climbing to do and should be left on the waiver wire.
News: The following Chargers did not have an offensive statistic in Week 10 against Kansas City: QB Billy Volek, TE Brandon Manumaleuna, WR Lagedu Naanee, RB Jacob Hester and WR Kassim Osgood.
Analysis: None of the players on this list should be considered viable Fantasy option. They are not in a position to contribute regular stats as they aren't in line for regular playing time. They've got some depth chart climbing to do and should be left on the waiver wire.

News: Chargers WR Kassim Osgood, QB Billy Volek and WR Craig Davis didn't record offensive statistics Week 6 against the Patriots.
Analysis: Without an injury, none of these players figures to make an impact in Fantasy anytime soon. Leave them all on waivers.
News: Chargers TE Brandon Manumaleuna, WR Legedu Naanee, RB Jacob Hester, RB Mike Tolbert, WR Kassim Osgood and QB Billy Volek were all dressed for San Diego's Week 6 loss to Miami but failed to record an offensive stat.
Analysis: Manumaleuna could have some Fantasy value if Antonio Gates gets hurt, but at the moment he has the same value as everyone else in this list -- zero.
News: Chargers TE Legedu Naanee, RB Jacob Hester, WR Malcom Floyd, WR Kassim Osgood and QB Billy Volek all dressed, but failed to record an offensive stat Week 4 against the Raiders.
Analysis: Most of these players are either reserves, play on special teams or aren't an integral part of the Chargers' offense. They have little to no Fantasy value heading into Week 5 against the Dolphins.
News: Chargers TE Legedu Naanee, WR Malcom Floyd, WR Kassim Osgood and QB Billy Volek all dressed, but failed to record an offensive stat Week 3 against the Jets.
Analysis: Most of these players are either reserves, play on special teams or aren't an integral part of the Chargers' offense. They have little to no Fantasy value heading into Week 4 against the Raiders.
News: Chargers WR Malcom Floyd, WR Kassim Osgood, WR Craig Davis, TE Brandon Manumaleuna and QB Billy Volek all dressed, but failed to record an offensive stat Week 2 against the Broncos.
Analysis: Most of these players are either reserves, play on special teams or aren't an integral part of the Chargers' offense. They have little to no Fantasy value heading into Week 3 against the Jets
News: Chargers TE Legedu Naanee, WR Malcolm Floyd, WR Kassim Osgood and QB Billy Volek all dressed, but failed to record an offensive stat Week 1 against the Chargers.
Analysis: Most of these players are reserves and have a minimal role in the Chargers offense. They should not be started in Fantasy leagues heading into Week 2 against the Broncos.
News:Chargers coach Norv Turner hasn't decided how long starting QB Philip Rivers or backups Billy Volek and Charlie Whitehurst will play Saturday against the St. Louis Rams, reports the North County Times. Turner said he'll make the decision on Saturday. "I do want to see Billy play a lot and see Charlie play a lot, so that will weigh into the decision," Turner said.
Analysis: Draft Rivers as a No. 2 Fantasy QB, but he has upside to be a starter later in the season if his knee remains healthy. He is worth a late-round pick in all leagues. Ignore Volek and Whitehurst unless Rivers suffers a setback.
News: Backup quarterback Billy Volek was on the free-agent market for less than 24 hours before agreeing to a three-year contract to return to the San Diego Chargers. Terms of the deal Friday weren't immediately available. Volek said remaining with the Chargers was more important than trying to land a starting job with a team that wasn't as good as the Chargers, who reached the AFC championship game before losing to New England.
Analysis: Volek's return is important for San Diego, because starter Philip Rivers is rehabbing from reconstructive surgery on his right knee. In the deepest of Fantasy Football leagues, Volek is worth a look as a late-round flier as early-season insurance for those who draft Rivers.
News: Chargers QB Billy Volek might have helped his stock heading into free agency this offseason after leading San Diego to the AFC Championship Game when starter Philip Rivers hurt his knee. Volek, who didn't play much during the regular season, could try his luck on the market or could stay with the Chargers since Rivers is coming off surgery for a torn ACL.
Analysis: If Volek stays with the Chargers he would be a temporary starter until Rivers is healthy. If he goes elsewhere he could compete for a job, but he will likely remain a backup option. Volek's Fantasy value will be determined this offseason, but for now consider him a No. 2 Fantasy QB heading into 2008.
News: The Chargers have listed Philip Rivers as doubtful for the AFC Championship Game at New England on Sunday with a knee injury. Rivers only practiced on Friday on a limited basis. Billy Volek is expected to start in place of Rivers if Rivers is ruled out before kickoff on Sunday.
Analysis: There is some speculation that Rivers has a partial ACL tear in his knee, but nothing has been confirmed by Rivers or the team. Rivers has tossed four touchdowns in two postseason games and will likely be throwing often against the Patriots. He would be worth starting in most postseason Fantasy formats, if healthy. Otherwise, Volek would be the desperation spot Fantasy starter if Rivers cannot go.
News: Chargers QB Billy Volek completed 3 of 4 passes for 48 yards and sneaked himself into the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown run Sunday as San Diego ended Indianapolis' season with a 28-24 win. Volek was filling in for Philip Rivers, who left the game on the last play of the third quarter with a knee injury.
Analysis: Depending on Rivers' status for Sunday, Volek could suddenly find himself thrown into the fire in the AFC Championship against the Patriots. Good luck, Billy. He's obviously not worth picking up for that game, and has minimal value heading into the 2008 season.
News: With the game in hand Monday night against Denver, San Diego backup QB Billy Volek replaced Philip Rivers and was 1-of-3 passing for 1 yard. He also had four carries for minus-2 yards and lost a fumble.
Analysis: Volek has minimal Fantasy value unless something happens to Rivers. With Rivers healthy, don't plan on using Volek in Week 17 at Oakland.
News: Backup QB Billy Volek attempted one pass (a miss) vs. Detroit in Week 15.
Analysis: So long as he's the backup quarterback, he shouldn't be on a Fantasy team.
News: Chargers backup QB Billy Volek took over for Philip Rivers for part of the second half, missing on two pass attempts with an interception and minus-1 rush yard in Week 14 at Tennessee.
Analysis: Volek still isn't expected to play much anytime soon, so Fantasy owners shouldn't have him on their teams. The Chargers host the Lions in Week 15.
News: Chargers RB Lorenzo Neal, WR Kassim Osgood and QB Billy Volek all dressed, but failed to record an offensive stat Week 12 against the Ravens.
Analysis: Most of these players either contribute on special teams or as reserve bodies on the Chargers' depth chart. They have little to no Fantasy value at this time. The Chargers play the Chiefs in Week 13.
News: Chargers QB Billy Volek didn't play Sunday against Jacksonville.
Analysis: Volek has minimal Fantasy value unless something happens to Philip Rivers. He should not be used in Week 12 against Baltimore.
News: Chargers WR Craig Davis, WR Kassim Osgood, RB Andrew Pinnock, TE Brandon Manumaleuna and QB Billy Volek didn't record statistics Week 10 against the Colts.
Analysis: These players sit too low on the depth chart to contribute much statistically. Keep all on waivers for Week 11 at Jacksonville.
News: RB Darren Sproles, FB Lorenzo Neal and backup QB Billy Volek both played in San Diego's 35-17 loss to the Vikings in Week 9 but didn't record an offensive statistic.
Analysis: None of these players has any Fantasy value at this time. The Chargers host the Colts in Week 10.
News: Chargers RB Andrew Pinnock, WR Legedu Naanee, WR Kassim Osgood and QB Billy Volek didn't record statistics in Week 8 loss against the Texans.
Analysis: These players sit too low on the depth chart to contribute much in Fantasy. Keep them on waivers for Week 9 at Minnesota.
News: Kassim Osgood played in Week 6 against the Raiders, but he did not post any offensive statistics. Backup quarterback Billy Volek also dressed, but he did not play.
Analysis: Neither Osgood or Volek are worth using in Week 8 against the Texans once the Chargers return from their bye week.
News: Chargers FB Lorenzo Neal (3-yard rush) and RB Darren Sproles (2-yard rush) helped the team run over the Broncos in Week 5. Backup QB Billy Volek also had two kneel-downs for minus-2 yards.
Analysis: None of these players are Fantasy relevant and shouldn't be used vs. Oakland in Week 6.
News: Chargers TE Brandon Manumaleuna, TE Legedu Naanee, WR Kassim Osgood and QB Billy Volek did not record an offensive statistic Week 4 against the Chiefs.
Analysis: Most of these players don't play a vital role in the team's offensive scheme at this point and hardly rack up enough stats to warrant heavy use in Fantasy leagues. Ignore them heading into Week 5 against the Broncos.
News: Billy Volek dressed for Week 2 at New England, but he did not get into the game.
Analysis: Volek is only worth a look in Fantasy leagues if Philip Rivers goes down with a long-term injury. The Chargers play at Green Bay in Week 3.
News: Notable Chargers who were active and dressed but didn't record an offensive stat vs. Chicago in Week 1 include: FB Andrew Pinnock, RB Darren Sproles, RB/WR Legedu Naanee, WR Malcom Floyd, WR Kassim Osgood and backup QB Billy Volek.
Analysis: Naanee and Floyd have some potential but aren't worth owning in Fantasy play. The rest are waiver-wire types. Don't expect any of these guys to perform at New England in Week 2.
News: San Diego's Philip Rivers played only two series in Sunday's preseason game against the Seahawks. He completed 5-of-7 for 71 yards in the loss. His backup, Billy Volek, threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Malcom Floyd late in the second quarter. Volek was 13-of-18 for 143 yards.
Analysis: In his first year as a starter, Rivers threw for 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions in leading the Chargers to their second AFC West title in three years. Expect Rivers to make a full recovery for next season, but continue to monitor his status. He'll be a low-end No. 1 or top-end No. 2 Fantasy QB in '07. Volek is only worth a look in the deepest of leagues as insurance for owners of Rivers.
News: WR Greg Camarillo, TE Brandon Manumaleuna, WR Kassim Osgood, WR Az-Zahir Hakim and backup QB Billy Volek were able to play in Week 16 against the Seahawks but they did not post any offensive statistics.
Analysis: None of the players mentioned above are worthy of any Fantasy consideration in Week 17 vs. Arizona.
News: Backup QB Billy Volek dressed for Week 15 against the Chiefs but he did not get into the game.
Analysis: Volek is not a recommended Fantasy option in any league for Week 16 at Seattle.
News: Notable Chargers players who were active but didn't record an offensive stat in Week 14 include: WR Kassim Osgood, WR Greg Camarillo, TE Brandon Manumaleuna, QB Billy Volek and RB LaDainian Tomlinson (just kidding on that last one).
Analysis: None of the players who were actually statless should be used in Fantasy play.
News: Chargers TE Brandon Manumaleuna, WR Kassim Osgood and QB Billy Volek all dressed but recorded no offensive stat in Week 12 against the Raiders.
Analysis: None of these players are recommended Fantasy options for Week 13 at Buffalo.
News: Billy Volek was active but did not play in San Diego's Week 11 win over the Broncos.
Analysis: Obviously Volek has no value unless Philip Rivers suffers an injury.
News: WR Kassim Osgood and QB Billy Volek were able to dress for Week 10 but neither posted any offensive statistics.
Analysis: Neither of the three players are worth using for now.
News: TE Brandon Manumaleuna, WR Kassim Osgood and QB Billy Volek were all able to dress for Week 9 against the Browns but neither posted any offensive statistics.
Analysis: Neither of the three players are worth using for Week 10 at Cincinnati.
News: TE Brandon Manumaleuna, FB Lorenzo Neal, WR Kassim Osgood and backup QB Billy Volek did not record any offensive statistics in Week 8.
Analysis: None of these players are worth starting in Fantasy Football.
News: WR Kassim Osgood, WR Vincent Jackson and backup QB Billy Volek did not record any offensive statistics in Week 7 at Kansas City.
Analysis: None of these players are worth starting in Week 8 vs. St. Louis.
News: The Chargers listed QB Billy Volek (emergency QB), CB Gordon Cletis, FB Andrew Pinnock, WR Greg Camarillo, TE Ryan Krause, LB Nick Speegle and S Andre Lott on the inactive list for Week 6 at San Francisco.
Analysis: None of these players should be in your active lineup for Week 6.
News: The San Diego Chargers announced WR Greg Camarillo, CB Cletis Gordon, FS Bhawoh Jue, T Leander Jordan, TE Ryan Krause, SS Andre Lott, FB Andrew Pinnock, QB Billy Volek (third quarterback).
Analysis: None of the players are major Fantasy impact players, so no big loss here.
News: Notable inactives for the Chargers in Week 4 include: QB Billy Volek (emergency QB), CB Cletis Gordon, FS Bhawoh Jue, FB Andrew Pinnock, SS Terrence Kiel, WR Greg Camarillo and TE Ryan Krause.
Analysis: None of these people are worth owning in Fantasy Football leagues.
News: Titans coach Jeff Fisher said Wednesday that QB Billy Volek lied to him and never took advantage of the opportunity to be the starter. The Titans traded Volek on Tuesday to the Chargers for a sixth-round draft pick that could become a fifth-rounder depending on playing time. Fisher claimed it was in the first week after Volek was made the starter during the offseason that the quarterback lied to the coach. Fisher wouldn't say what the lie was. "I never at anytime in my career have gone into such detail (about a trade). But I felt the responsibility, as Billy felt he was thrown under the bus," Fisher said. "Billy threw this organization under the bus, along with a number of his teammates."
Analysis: Volek told several reporters on his way to the airport that he got a raw deal and didn't know why he went from starter to third-stringer before the season. Volek shouldn't ever start unless Chargers QB Philip Rivers goes down with an injury or plays himself out of the starting gig. Fantasy owners shouldn't bother with Volek on rosters at this point.
News: The Chargers have traded a conditional 2007 sixth-round pick to the Titans in exchange for QB Billy Volek. The pick could become a fifth-round choice if Volek participates in 50 percent of the team's total offensive plays in 2006. "We're excited to add Billy Volek to strengthen our quarterback position," said General Manager A.J. Smith. "We're always exploring ways to upgrade the talent on the Chargers. Billy brings talent and experience, and adds depth at that very critical position."
Analysis: Volek is ultimately an insurance policy for the Chargers as a backup to Philip Rivers and a mentor of sorts for rookie Charlie Whitehurst. Volek shouldn't ever start unless Rivers goes down with an injury or plays himself out of the starting gig. Fantasy owners shouldn't bother with Volek on rosters at this point.
News: Titans QB Billy Volek told The Tennessean that he's ready to move on with his career. The Chiefs, Raiders and Chargers are all interested in acquiring Volek. "I just have to wait and see. I have to do what is best for my career," Volek said. "Tennessee fans have been great for me, and now it is time for me to move on."
Analysis: Volek is only worth owning in the deepest of Fantasy leagues as a flier since he could conceivably land in a nice situation with the Raiders or Chiefs. However, keep in mind that if he does get dealt, he'd have to learn a whole new offensive system and wouldn't be able to help a team much for several weeks.
News: Notable Titans inactives for Week 2 include: QB Billy Volek (emergency quarterback), RB Travis Henry, FB Ahmard Hall, WR Courtney Roby, TE Erron Kinney, DT Robaire Smith and DE Antwan Odom.
Analysis: Only Henry and Kinney have significant Fantasy value for the season. The rest shouldn't be owned.
News: According to the Tennessean, Titans QB Billy Volek said the San Diego Chargers are one of the teams who contacted the Titans after he asked to be traded last month. Volek said he thinks there's a chance something could happen next week, after the Titans and Chargers play on Sunday. "I know that they have a lot of interest. I know that they have contacted Floyd Reese and they contacted my agent," Volek said. "There is an opportunity for me there and it is a bridge I'll cross when it presents itself." Volek is currently behind veteran Kerry Collins and rookie Vince Young. The Chargers are quarterbacked by former first-round pick Philip Rivers, who is backed up by rookie Charlie Whitehurst.
Analysis: Volek has no Fantasy value right now as a reserve, but keep an eye on the situation because he could become insurance for Philip Rivers owners if the trade to San Diego goes through.
News: Jeff Fisher tried to keep his starting QB a secret leading into the opener, but said Monday that Kerry Collins is locked in as his starter while Vince Young will continue to get into games for a series here and there. Billy Volek will be the No. 3 QB and might not suit up for some games.
Analysis: Volek is relatively worthless in Fantasy leagues at this point. Drop him for a flier at another position or with another QB. It appears the Titans will go with the veteran Collins until Young is ready. Volek could be traded, but that's just as bad of news, because he will have to pick up a new playbook in the middle of the season. Don't expect much from the former Fresno State star at this point.
News: The Titans didn't announce their starter for Week 1 until 90 minutes before kickoff, and gave the job to Kerry Collins over Billy Volek. He opened his 12th NFL season with his fifth team. Rookie Vince Young also played a series. Collins finished 17-for-38 for 223 yards, but he was intercepted twice. Young went 3-for-4 in his only series of the game, but threw an interception after being perfect earlier in the drive.
Analysis: Collins may have one the job, but he didn't make the Titans feel very good about the decision. He's clearly the QB to own in Tennessee, but is not a recommended starter unless you are truely desperate in leagues that require starting two QBs. Vince Young is still not going to see regular playing time, so his value is limited to keeper leagues. As for Volek, he should not be owned in any leagues unless he wins back his job.
News: According to both The Tennessean and Sirius Satellite Radio, the Titans are expected to start Kerry Collins at quarterback, making Vince Young the No. 2 and Billy Volek as the No. 3/emergency option. Young is expected to take some reps in the game.
Analysis: Regardless of who starts, anybody under center for Tennessee is not worth using Week 1 for Fantasy purposes. Collins appears to be the most likely to start, but Young is the one with the best long-term potential. Volek probably shouldn't even be owned in leagues at this time.
News: A report in The Tennessean sayss that Titans QB Kerry Collins is expected to start Week 1 vs. the Jets, although the team has yet to name an official starter. The Titans have named rookie QB Vince Young the No. 2 QB, meaning that either Collins or Billy Volek will be the No. 3/emergency QB for the team. According to Don Banks of Sports Illustrated, sources in Tennessee claim that Volek was non-chalant about preparing for the 2006 season since he seemingly inherited the spot when Steve McNair was dealt to Baltimore. His decision-making was slow and he took a long time to grasp the new offense. That prompted the Titans to not only draft Vince Young and bring him along as a rapid pace, but also sign Collins and bring him along swiftly. Volek is also more of a drop-back passer and not a good fit for the West-Coast offense.
Analysis: Regardless of who starts, anybody under center for Tennessee is not worth using Week 1 for Fantasy purposes. Collins appears to be the most likely to start, but Young is the one with the best long-term potential. Volek probably shouldn't even be owned in leagues at this time.
News: Billy Volek remained on the Tennessee roster on Monday and promised he won't disrupt the locker room. Kerry Collins is busy learning the offense. Vince Young? The rookie is happy the regular season has arrived. The Titans? They're either bluffing to raise Volek's trade value by keeping him around, or they want to protect themselves at quarterback. So, they don't care how he feels in being demoted from the starter to the No. 3 guy. Coach Jeff Fisher wouldn't say Monday who will start Sunday in the season opener against the New York Jets.
Analysis: Volek said there has been discussions with general manager Floyd Reese, who said last week that the quarterback's name had come up in talks with other teams. But Volek is leaving the business to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, hired last year. From a Fantasy standpoint, don’t start any of the three this week. You should already have better options on your team, with one of these guys as a bye-week replacement or injury stand-in.
News: The Tennessee Titans decided Saturday to protect themselves - for now - by keeping both veteran quarterbacks Billy Volek and Kerry Collins on the roster, instead releasing Matt Mauck.
Analysis: Volek had not been happy since the Titans signed Collins on Monday. Asked if Volek's situation might change, coach Jeff Fisher said rookie Vince Young will be their No. 2 quarterback, with a decision on who starts Sept. 10 against the New York Jets coming later this week. The Titans said Volek's name had popped up in talks with other teams. Asked if the Titans are continuing to seek a trade, Fisher said Volek had a no-trade clause in his contract. Keep an eye on this situation as it progresses.
News: Billy Volek did everything he could to make his case for a starting job on Friday at Green Bay, finding Brandon Jones on a crossing route for a 54-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to give the Titans a 21-7 lead. That was the only pass he threw in the game.
Analysis: Titans coach Jeff Fisher still hasn't named a starter for the Titans' opener against the New York Jets. The signing of Kerr Collins does not bode well for his chances of making the team, let alone start for the Titans. He remains the starting quarterback for now, but his grasp on the job is tenuous at best, making him only worth considering as a No. 3 Fantasy QB.
News: The Tennessee Titans might dodge the question of who their starting quarterback is by giving rookie Vince Young the start in their final exhibition game. The Titans are stuck in a situation where Billy Volek, chosen as the starter when Steve McNair was traded, now has competition after the team signed 11-year veteran Kerry Collins on Monday. Volek isn't happy with the move and might be seeking a trade. He declined to talk to reporters Wednesday, referring questions to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. His agent said only, "No comment." Fisher did say he had settled on a playing order for his quarterbacks that should be about even. He might even get Matt Mauck in the game. Fisher could decide to split the game evenly between Young, who needs as much work as possible, and Collins to speed up his learning curve of the Titans' offense. That would allow the Titans not to play Volek, who had been waiting patiently for his chance to replace McNair before they signed Collins. General manager Floyd Reese said he talked with Rosenhaus only once. That doesn't mean Volek, whose 10 NFL starts were the only such experience on the roster before Collins arrived, hasn't been the topic of conversations with other teams. "This time of year over the next couple of days, there's an endless number of conversations you'll have with clubs in the league saying 'What if?' Some you talk to three or four times, some you talk to once," Reese said. "Billy's name has come up from some of the clubs."
Analysis: Volek remains the starting quarterback, but his grasp on the job is tenuous at best, making him only worth considering as a No. 3 Fantasy QB. Frankly, we'd avoid the situation.
News: Kerry Collins and the Tennessee Titans have agreed on a deal. He is expected to challenge starter Billy Volek for the No. 1 job in Nashville, which will give the team a little more time to develop rookie Vince Young rather than throwing him into the fire if things start to go south with Volek at the helm. "Billy's got some competition," head coach Jeff Fisher said. "I've spoken with Billy. Billy's not too awfully pleased with it."
Analysis: Collins will still need to learn the playbook and get on the same page with receivers, etc., and that will take time. But Fantasy owners of Volek and Young have to be a little put off, as it is never good to see even more competition for playing time. Volek remains the starting quarterback, but his grasp on the job is tenuous at best, making him only worth considering as a No. 3 Fantasy QB.
News: Tennessee starting quarterback Billy Volek had a decent night in Saturday's preseason game at Denver, completing 6-of-9 passes for 70 yards. He did have an interception, however.
Analysis: Volek had a decent night, but he is going to have to keep the peddle to the metal to avoid being overtaken by rookie QB Vince Young. He is such a dynamic and versatile quarterback that it will be hard for the Titans to keep him off the field for too long. Volek is simply keeping the spot warm at this point.
News: Billy Volek, who has served as Steve McNair's primary backup for the past six years, is now No. 1 on the depth chart with McNair traded to Baltimore.
Analysis: Volek isn't the long-term answer for the Titans with Vince Young coming aboard, but he appears to be in line to be their starting quarterback in 2006, which makes him a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB in 2006. Consider him with a late-round pick in deeper leagues.
News: The Tennessean reports that Titans QB Billy Volek, who has long been a backup for the team, has been taking the first-team reps in minicamp. The Titans' previous starter, Steve McNair, has been barred from the Titans' facility and has filed a grievance against the club. "Billy's role right now, he is our most experienced guy and he is the starter. If there comes a point where that ends up being the way we are going to go, Billy will be ready to step in there," Titans Coach Jeff Fisher said. "If for some reason it works out where Steve is not going to be here, then Billy is going to get himself ready to play, but that is a hypothetical situation, and I'll deal with that when we are able to be certain about which direction we're going."
News: Steve McNair 's tenure with the Titans could be over. His agent said the team is considering releasing McNair or possibly trading him to the Ravens. "We could have something worked out later today or tomorrow," agent Bus Cook said. "We're working on some things." The Titans drafted Texas quarterback Vince Young with the No. 3 overall pick as McNair's successor, and they already were looking for a way to reduce or shed the $23.46 million salary cap number the co-MVP of 2003 is scheduled to count for in 2006.
Analysis: Volek isn't the long-term answer for the Titans with Vince Young coming aboard, but he appears to be in line to be their starting quarterback in 2006, which makes him a low-end No. 2 Fantasy QB in 2006. Consider him with a middle- to late-round pick in deeper leagues.
News: The Nashville Tennessean reports Billy Volek has been running the Titans' on-field workouts in the absence of Steve McNair. "Billy had a real good day (yesterday)," head coach Jeff Fisher said.
Analysis: Should McNair be released after Draft Weekend, Volek would become the starter in Tennessee and a valuable sleeper candidate.
News: According to reports, Steve McNair will remain with the Titans next season after the team paid a $1 million non-exercise fee that will void the final three years of the contract. That means Billy Volek will again be a reserve, unless of course the team is able to deal him in the offseason.
Analysis: The Titans are expected to add a rookie quarterback in April's Draft, either Vince Young or Jay Cutler, to replace McNair. As a result, there's a decent shot that Volek will be dealt. The N.Y. Jets could have some interest.
News: Titans QB Billy Volek played sparingly in 2005, throwing for 474 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.
Analysis: Volek is a candidate for the Titans' starting QB job assuming the team parts ways with Steve McNair. However, the team is also interested in drafting a quarterback and that person would compete with Volek for the top gig. Volek's Fantasy status as anything but a No. 3 Fantasy QB is risky.
News: Billy Volek started in place of the injured Steve McNair (pectoral) in Week 17 at Jacksonville. He completed 14-of-25 for 114 yards and two touchdowns.
Analysis: Volek might be a useful Fantasy quarterback in 2006 if he can find work as a full-time starter.
News: The Tennessean reports Steve McNair (pectoral) is expected to sit out the regular-season finale. Matt Mauck, not Billy Volek, will start against Jacksonville. "They know what I can do and they know what I am capable of," Volek said. "I really don't have any choice of what they are doing upstairs."
Analysis: It appears McNair's season is over, so keep him reserved. Mauck is not a recommended starter in most cases, and Volek's "absence" could mean the Titans want to see how Mauck performs in case Volek is traded in the offseason.

Analysis: McNair has a fantastic matchup against Houston this week. It's safe to get him into your active lineup. Billy Volek should be reserved immediately if you have him active.
News: Titans QB Billy Volek could see action against the Texans if Steve McNair absorbs any kind of hit that affects his lower left leg. McNair missed Wednesday and Thursday's practices with a shin contusion and sore left ankle.
Analysis: Volek should remain benched for Fantasy owners who have Steve McNair as their starting QB.
News: The Tennessean reports Titans head coach Jeff Fisher said that Steve McNair will remain the team's starter for the remainder of the season. Billy Volek will remain the team's No. 2 QB.

News: The Titans flew to Arizona without injured Steve McNair, giving backup quarterback Billy Volek his first start this season Sunday against the Cardinals. The Titans officially downgraded McNair from questionable to out Saturday after listing him as questionable each day because of back and ankle injuries. He missed each practice, including Thursday when he was excused for personal reasons, and sat out two sessions last week. Volek will be making his 10th start Sunday after starting eight times last season for an injured McNair. "I've said this for a long time now, even though Steve is the starter, I still prepare myself like I'm the starter," Volek said after practice Friday. "So, I'm just going to go out there and play my game."
Analysis: Ouch. McNair owners are out of luck in Week 7. Track his progress in practice next week before you consider him in future lineups. Volek is a solid replacement option for Week 7, if he is on your roster. He threw for 2,486 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2004 and became only the fourth quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least 400 yards in consecutive games.
