Improvements still not enough for Raiders' D

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11/17/2014) The Raiders defense held their own in Week 11, but couldn't come up with enough big plays to come away with the upset in a 13-6 loss to the Chargers.

The Raiders held an explosive Chargers offense to just 300 yards in the game, including only 180 through the air on 34 attempts by Philip Rivers. However, though they knocked him around a few times, the Raiders came away from the game with just two sacks and no turnovers in the loss.

The Raiders have not posted a double-figure Fantasy scoring game since Week 1, though Week 11 was their best since they recorded 8 points in Week 3. They take on the Chiefs in Week 12.

Blocked punt not enough to save Raiders

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(11/3/2014) The Raiders didn't have a stellar defensive showing Week 9 at Seattle, but they limited a team to fewer than 330 yards for the second straight game, giving up 326. The Seahawks scored 30 points, though.

The Raiders did have a big play in the third quarter, when Brice Butler recovered a punt blocked by Denico Autry in the end zone for a touchdown. It was the first touchdown for the Raiders DST this season.

The Raiders also had a sack in the game, giving them a grand total of eight all season. Clearly, their DST is nothing to write home about in Fantasy. It will be hopelessly overmatched Week 10 against Denver.

Raiders can't turn around defensive troubles

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10/27/2014) The Raiders DST's struggles continued in Week 8, a 23-13 loss to the Browns.

The Browns manage just 306 yards of total offense, but took advantage of a number of short fields to score on five drives. The Raiders mostly avoided allowing big plays, but also couldn't come up with any of their own, coming away from the game with just one sack and no turnovers forced.

The Raiders have failed to reach double digits in Fantasy scoring since Week 1, and they probably won't reverse that trend in Week 9 with the Seahawks on the schedule.

Raiders CB D.J. Hayden could be activated before Sunday's game

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(10/24/2014) Raiders coach Tony Sparano told reporters Friday that D.J. Hayden is "good to go," but would not commit to whether the cornerback will be activated off the Physically Unable to Perform List in time for Week 8 against the Browns, ESPN reports. The team is expected to place Usama Young and LaMarr Woodley on the season-ending injured reserve list, which would open a spot for Hayden.

The Raiders have 12 days remaining to activate Hayden, or else he lands on the injured reserve list.

Report: Raiders safety Usama Young suffers torn ACL, MCL

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/20/2014) Raiders safety Usama Young is out for the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL and MCL Sunday against the Cardinals, a source told ESPN. Young has totaled 23 tackles (21 solo), two pass defenses and one sack through six games.

Pick not enough to save Raiders DST

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/19/2014) The Raiders had both an interception and a sack in Week 7 -- just the second time they've had one of each in a game to give them three and six, respectively, on the year -- but they didn't have the greatest defensive showing against Arizona, allowing 24 points on 365 yards.

They did at least snap a streak of two straight in which they allowed more than 30 points on more than 400 yards, but if this is the upside for the Raiders DST, it's clearly a unit you want no part of in Fantasy.

Even with a favorable matchup Week 8 at the Browns, who were just shown up by the Jaguars in Week 7, you can do better than the Raiders DST in standard 12-team leagues.

Raiders DST performs about as you'd expect

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/13/2014) The Raiders didn't offer much resistance against one of the league's most prolific offenses Week 6 against Chargers, allowing 31 points on 423 yards. They recorded a sack to give them five on the year, but that still puts them near the bottom of the league in that category. They didn't have a takeaway.

In standard CBSSports.com leagues, the Raiders DST scored 10 Fantasy points Week 1 at the Jets but has averaged just 3.8 in four games since. Even with a favorable matchup, it's not worth using in Fantasy. Leave it on the waiver wire for Week 7 against Arizona.

Raiders place LB Nick Roach on season-ending IR

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(10/8/2014) The Raiders have placed linebacker Nick Roach on the season-ending injury reserve list due to the lingering effects from a concussion, the Bay Area News Group reports. Roach, who played every game last season, suffered the brain injury in an exhibition game against the Packers on Aug. 22 and was never medically cleared for full contact.

The team signed Jamar Chaney to take his spot on the roster.

Raiders force three turnovers in blowout

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(9/28/2014) The Raiders DST unit provided little resistance to the Dolphins in a 38-14 loss in Week 4.

The Dolphins racked up 435 yards of total offense in the game, and did so in spit of shutting the offense down early in the third quarter. The Raiders failed to register a single sack in the game, though they did force three turnovers, with two fumbles recovered as well.

The Raiders held the Patriots to 16 points a week ago, but have given up 30-plus points in two of three games. They are on bye in Week 5, with a potent Chargers offense on the way in Week 6.

Kaluka Maiava exits Week 4 with hamstring injury

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9/28/2014) Raiders linebacker Kaluka Maiava left Week 4 against the Dolphins in London with a hamstring injury. He suffered the injury on his sixth snap of the game and was ruled questionable to return.

Raiders add Brandian Ross as Tyvon Branch lands on IR

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(9/24/2014) The Raiders announced Wednesday they claimed safety Brandian Ross off waivers from the Dolphins. To clear a roster spot, safety Tyvon Branch (foot) was placed on injured reserve.

Report: Tyvon Branch expected to land on IR

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(9/24/2014) Raiders safety Tyvon Branch needs foot surgery and will be placed on injured reserve, sources told NFL.com. Branch will undergo surgery for a Jones fracture in his foot, and the operation will be performed by Dr. Robert Anderson.

Raiders might be down two starting LBs Week 4

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(9/24/2014) With Miles Burris (foot), Sio Moore (ankle) and Nick Roach (concussion) all recovering from injuries, the Raiders might have to start Kaluka Maiava and Bojay Filimoeatu at linebacker alongside Khalil Mack during Sunday's game against the Dolphins, according to CSNBayArea.com.

"We’ll continue to monitor that situation, but I’m hopeful that one or maybe two of (the injured players) could be ready," head coach Dennis Allen said. "We’ll just have to see how the week goes."

Raiders defense holds its own

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(9/21/2014) The Raiders hadn't looked particularly good defensively prior to Week 3 -- and in fact, gave up 30 points to the Texans in Week 2 -- but they performed admirably at New England, limiting the Patriots to 16 points on 241 yards.

They didn't force a turnover in the contest, but they did have two sacks, one each by Justin Tuck and C.J. Wilson.

The Raiders seemingly have a favorable matchup Week 4 against the Dolphins, but given how poorly they performed with what seemed like favorable matchups in their first two games, you may want to steer clear of the Raiders DST in Fantasy.

(9/21/2014) Raiders linebacker Kaluka Maiava had a season-high eight tackles, including three solo, Week 3 at New England. His season high prior to this game was four.

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(9/21/2014) Raiders defensive lineman Justin Tuck, who missed a day of practice earlier in the week because of an illness, not only played Week 3 at New England, but he also recorded his first sack with his new team, finishing with four total tackles (two solo).

Tuck had 11 sacks for the Giants last year.

Charles Woodson has lowest tackle total yet

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(9/21/2014) Raiders defensive back Charles Woodson, who had nine total tackles in Week 1 and eight in Week 2, had a modest four, including three solo, Week 3 at New England.

Woodson had a career-high 97 tackles in 2013, his first year back with the Raiders.

Tyvon Branch breaks his foot

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(9/21/2014) Raiders defensive back Tyvon Branch broke his foot in the second half Week 3 at New England and will be out for an extended period of time. According to ESPN, the injury could even cost him the rest of the season.

Even though he left early, Branch still led the team with 10 tackles, including seven solo, putting him in double digits for the second time in three games. He played in only two games last season, missing much of the year with an ankle injury.

Justin Tuck active for Week 3

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(9/21/2014) Raiders defensive lineman Justin Tuck, who missed a day of practice this week with an illness, is active for Week 3 at New England. He was listed as probable on Friday's injury report.

Tuck, who is in his first season with the Raiders, has yet to record a sack after recording 11 with Giants last year.

Tyvon Branch racks up 11 tackles in Week 2 loss

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9/14/2014) Raiders safety Tyvon Branch enjoyed a productive performance at home against the Texans in Week 2. He led the way with 11 total tackles (nine solo) in a 30-14 loss. He has 19 total tackles on the year.

Raiders can't solve Arian Foster, Texans

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9/14/2014) The Raiders had some issues containing Arian Foster in a Week 2 loss to the Texans at home on Sunday.

Foster gashed the defense for 138 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. Oakland permitted 327 yards of total offense, 188 of which came on the ground. None other than J.J. Watt caught a touchdown pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick from 1-yard out. The team also failed to force a turnover and record a sack in a 30-14 defeat.

The Raiders will travel to New England for a Week 3 showdown against the Patriots.

Nick Roach a no-go Sunday

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(9/7/2014) The Raiders listed linebacker Nick Roach among their inactives for Week 1 at the Jets. Roach suffered a concussion in the third preseason game and was limited in practice all week. He was listed as questionable on Friday's injury report.

Roach had 112 total tackles and 5 1/2 sacks last season, his first with the Raiders.

Sio Moore stretchered off field after helmet-to-helmet collision

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8/22/2014) Raiders linebacker Sio Moore was carted off with a neck injury Friday night against the Packers in exhibition play. He was taken to the hospital where his X-rays came back negative, per the Bay Area News Group.

Tyvon Branch suffers ankle injury in preseason game

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8/16/2014) Raiders safety Tyvon Branch suffered an ankle injury during Friday's preseason game against the Lions, according to the Bay Area News Group.

Branch was limited to two games last year because of a fractured fibula suffered earlier in the season. He will be evaluated leading up to the third preseason game next Friday against Green Bay.
