Safety makes difference for Titans DST

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(12/14/2014) After falling short in six straight games, the Titans DST finally scored double-digit Fantasy points, according to standard CBSSports.com scoring, Week 15 against the Jets, but it needed a safety to do it. That safety came in the second quarter on a sack of Geno Smith by Jurrell Casey, who also forced a fumble on the play. The Jets recovered the fumble in the end zone.

It was one of three sacks the Titans had on the day. In all, they allowed 16 points on 277 yards.

The Titans didn't have any takeaways, which was a bit of a letdown going against the Jets, but they were competent with a favorable matchup. In Fantasy, that's all you can really ask for.

The Titans have another favorable matchup Week 16 at Jacksonville. They had a season-high six sacks against the Jaguars in Week 6, limiting them to 14 points, so consider holding on to the Titans DST for another week.

More of the same for Titans DST

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(12/7/2014) The 2014 Giants aren't known for being a great offensive team, but the Titans sure made them look like one in Week 14, giving up 36 points on 402 yards. Tennessee has allowed at least 35 points in three straight games for an average of 41.3 during that stretch.

The one saving grace for the Titans DST in Week 14, as was also true in Week 13, was a touchdown. Defensive back Marqueston Huff intercepted a pass in the third quarter and returned it 23 yards for the score. It was the Titans' only takeaway on the day.

Even with a touchdown in back-to-back games, the Titans DST hasn't scored more than eight Fantasy points in standard CBSSports.com leagues since Week 11, when it had 12. Of course, it hasn't had the most favorable matchups during that stretch, especially not in Weeks 12 and 13, which makes it an interesting call for Week 15 against the Jets. That matchup is probably good enough to earn the Titans DST a look in most leagues, but it's no slam dunk.

Titans allow more than 40 points again

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(11/30/2014) After allowing 43 points to the visiting Eagles in Week 12, the Titans gave up 45 to the visiting Texans in Week 13 -- and on a whopping 457 yards. Worse yet, they went without a sack for the first time in seven games. Their one saving grace was a fumble returned 62 yards for a touchdown by defensive back Jason McCourty in the third quarter.

Of course, since it was the first touchdown for the Titans DST this season, it doesn't do much for its long-term outlook. It was a fluke play in a game where there was clearly a lack of good play, and that's pretty much been the case for the Titans DST all season. It should remain on waivers for Week 14 against the Giants.

Report: Titans will release veteran LB Shaun Phillips

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/25/2014) The Titans are expected to release veteran linebacker Shaun Phillips on Tuesday, according to the Tennessean. Phillips had 10 sacks last season with the Broncos, but registered 19 total tackles and two sacks in 11 games this season with Tennessee.

Poor showing for Titans DST

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(11/23/2014) After holding their own against the Steelers in Week 11, piling up five sacks to give them three games with at least that many this season, the Titans couldn't have been much worse defensively Week 12 at Philadelphia. They allowed a season-high 43 points on 462 yards. They did record two interceptions, their most since having three Week 1 at Kansas City, but they also had just two sacks.

Apart from that aberration in Week 1 and Week 6 against the hapless Jaguars, the Titans DST hasn't had much to offer Fantasy owners this season. You should keep a safe distance for Week 13 at Houston.

Hamstring injury knocks Titans' Kamerion Wimbley out of Week 12

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/23/2014) Titans defensive end Kamerion Wimbley was forced out of Sunday's game against Philadelphia with a hamstring injury. Wimbley sustained the injury while trying to chase down LeSean McCoy in the first half. The team has him questionable to return to the game.

Titans DB Michael Griffin exits with apparent arm injury

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/23/2014) Titans defensive back Michael Griffin went down with an apparent left arm injury Sunday against the Eagles. Griffing suffered the injury trying to wrap up a Philadelphia player in the second quarter. He was escorted back to the locker room for further evaluation.

Titans S Bernard Pollard not 'around' the team during his rehab

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/14/2014) The Titans have sent out an open invitation for injured safety Bernard Pollard to rejoin team activities. Pollard suffered a season-ending torn Achilles Week 5 vs. Cleveland. According to defensive coordinator Ray Horton, Pollard has not been a presence in meeting room and road trips, per the Tennessean.

"He's still in his (walking) boot, so I'm sure he feels like he can't get around," Horton said. "And then when guys get hurt, you (go from) all the camaraderie and joking, and all of a sudden, you're not in the inner circle anymore. It is tough on an athlete to miss that kind of time."

Texans run over Titans in Week 9

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10/26/2014) The Titans DST unit entered Week 8 against the Texans riding a solid two-week stretch of performance, but failed to keep it going in a 30-16 loss.

The Texans got off to a fast start in the game, and the Titans had no answer for it on defense. The Texans racked up 405 yards of total offense and avoided turning the ball over, with the only positive contributions from the Titans DST coming in the form of five sacks.

The Titans DST unit is averaging just 8.2 Fantasy points per game this season, so Sunday's performance certainly wasn't out of the norm for them. They are on bye in Week 9, with a matchup against the Ravens waiting in Week 10.

Titans list Week 8 inactives

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/26/2014) Titans quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, running back Antonio Andrews, wide receiver Kris Durham, tight end Taylor Thompson, tackle Will Svitek, defensive lineman DaQuan Jones and cornerback Coty Sensabaugh were ruled inactive Week 8 vs. Houston.

Titans LBs Shaun Phillips, Quentin Groves dealing with injuries

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/20/2014) Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt said Monday linebacker Shaun Phillips suffered a hip injury and linebacker Quentin Groves suffered an ankle injury Sunday against the Redskins. Phillips is headed for an MRI and Whisenhunt added he didn't know the status of either player for Week 8 vs. Houston.

Titans DE Ropati Pitoitua seeking a cast for broken finger

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(10/20/2014) Titans defensive end Ropati Pitoitua, who underwent surgery to repair a broken finger earlier in the month, will visit a specialist on Tuesday about creating a cast for his finger. Pitoitua suffered the injury Week 6 and was inactive against Washington Week 7.

The Titans will host the Texans Week 8.

Titans decent against backup quarterbacks

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/19/2014) The Titans got only so much of an opportunity to take advantage of struggling quarterback Kirk Cousins Week 7 at Washington. Not long after he threw his one and only interception, the Redskins replaced him with Colt McCoy.

The Titans also recovered a fumble (by Cousins) in the first quarter and had three sacks in the contest. They limited the Redskins to 19 points on 351 yards.

It was the second straight game in which the Titans DST scored double-digit Fantasy points, going by standard CBSSports.com scoring, but of course, the previous one came against the Jaguars.

If nothing else, the Titans DST has shown it can make the most of favorable matchups. Because its next one Week 8 against Houston is only so-so, you may want to look elsewhere in Fantasy.

Shonn Greene among Titans inactives Week 7

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/19/2014) Titans running back Shonn Greene, cornerback Coty Sensabaugh, linebacker Akeem Ayers, tackle Will Svitek, tight end Taylor Thompson and defensive end Ropati Pitoitua were among the team's inactives Week 7 at Washington.

Titans DST the latest to benefit from Jaguars

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/13/2014) After looking horrible the previous four weeks, allowing an average of 32.3 points on 406.5 yards, the Titans DST suddenly came to life Week 6 against Jacksonville. Funny how that works.

Actually, it's not. The Jaguars have allowed the most Fantasy points to DSTs this season -- and by a wide margin. They're a gimme in Fantasy. You want the DST of virtually any team that faces them.

If you want the numbers, not that they should matter since they certainly won't be the norm for other matchups, the Titans allowed 14 points on 379 yards. They piled up a season-high six sacks, recorded an interception and recovered a fumble. Though they now have 15 sacks on the season, tying them for seventh in the NFL, they had only one in their previous three games combined.

The Titans have what seems like a decent matchup Week 7 Washington, but given its performance in the four games leading up to this one, you should probably avoid their DST.

Titans lose Bernard Pollard (Achilles) for rest of season

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/6/2014) Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt announced Monday safety Bernard Pollard will miss the rest of the season after suffering a ruptured Achilles Week 5 vs. Cleveland. Pollard finishes the season with 27 tackles (22 solo), one sack and one pass defense.

Titans CB Coty Sensabaugh getting MRI for sore knee

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/6/2014) Titans cornerback Coty Sensabaugh said he is going to get an MRI on his sore knee, according to The Tennessean. Sensabaugh has totaled 20 tackles (17 solo) and one sack through five games.

Titans DST continues to struggle

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/6/2014) Though their struggles at Cincinnati and Indianapolis in Weeks 3 and 4 were understandable, the Titans had another poor defensive showing Week 5 against Cleveland, allowing the Browns to come back from a 28-3 deficit. The Browns finished with 29 points on 460 yards, the second-most the Titans have allowed all season.

The Titans did have both a sack and an interception in the contest. The sack was their first since they recorded four each of the first two weeks.

Though the Titans DST hasn't shown much in recent weeks, its matchup Week 6 against Jacksonville is enough to get any DST on track. It figures to be one of the top sleeper units in Fantasy, so you'll want to make a play for it on the waiver wire.

Blidi Wreh-Wilson diagnosed with a concussion

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9/29/2014) Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt told reporters Monday that cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson has been diagnosed with a concussion, via the team's official website.

Wreh-Wilson left Week 4 against Tennessee with the ailment. He will now go through the league's concussion protocol and will need to be medically cleared before he can return to action. He has totaled 16 tackles (four solo) on the year.

Titans give up 41 points in blowout loss

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(9/28/2014) The Titans DST unit provided little value in Week 4, in a 41-17 loss to the Colts Sunday.

The Titans provided little resistance as the Colts' offense dominated the game. The Titans gave up 498 yards of total offense in the game, including 393 through the air by Andrew Luck. Luck was not sacked once in the game, though he did account for the Titans lone turnover, an interception.

The Titans opened the season with a solid showing on defense, but have been tagged for 100 points over the last three games. They face the Browns in Week 6.

Blidi Wreh-Wilson being evaluated for concussion

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(9/28/2014) Titans cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson was being evaluated for a concussion following Sunday's game at Indianapolis. Wreh-Wilson had four tackles (three solo) and one pass defense Sunday.

Titans list Week 4 inactives

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(9/28/2014) Titans wide receiver Kris Durham, cornerback Brandon Harris, linebacker Akeem Ayers, tackle Byron Stingily, tight end Taylor Thompson and defensive end Ropati Pitoitua were all ruled inactive Week 4 at Indianapolis.

Titans held sackless in blowout Week 3 loss vs. Bengals

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(9/21/2014) The Titans defense couldn't record a sack but managed one interception in the team's 33-7 blowout loss to the Bengals in Week 3.

The Titans racked up eight sacks over the team's first two games but couldn't get anything done against the Bengals' offensive line Sunday. Tennessee fell victim to a trick-play touchdown in the first quarter, with Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton catching a touchdown pass from wide receiver Mohamed Sanu. The Bengals also converted for three touchdowns in goal-to-go situations.

Titans safety George Wilson made the lone big play for the defense, picking off Dalton on a tipped ball during an attempted screen deep in Cincinnati territory late in the first half. Unfortunately, the Tennesee offense wasn't able to convert the turnover into points, throwing its own interception before halftime. The Titans will look to rebound when they head to Indianapolis in Week 4.

Jason McCourty active for Week 3 vs. Bengals

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(9/21/2014) Titans cornerback Jason McCourty (groin) is active for Sunday's matchup with the Bengals.

McCourty was listed as questionable on the team's final injury report, but he'll suit up. Running back Dexter McCluster (foot), quarterback Charlie Whitehurst (finger) and linebacker Wesley Woodyard (ankle) are also active after being listed as probable.

Titans have trouble stopping the run during Week 2 loss

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(9/14/2014) The Titans defense had trouble slowing down Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray during a 26-10 loss Week 2. Murray rushed for 167 yards and one touchdown, as Dallas racked up 368 total yards in the win.

The Cowboys managed just two offensive touchdowns, but kicker Dan Bailey totaled four field goals -- all over 40 yards.

The Titans did finish with four sacks and one fumble recovery. Tennessee is back in action Week 3 against the Bengals.
