Da'Rick Rogers, Griff Whalen benefit from LaVon Brazill's ban

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/8/2014) With LaVon Brazill suspended for at least a year, Da'Rick Rogers and Griff Whalen have the inside track on the Colts' final two receiver spots, reports ESPN.com. Rogers and Whalen should make the team behind Reggie Wayne, T.Y. Hilton, Hakeem Nicks and rookie Donte Moncrief.

Griff Whalen becoming important target for Andrew Luck

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1/1/2014) Colts receiver Griff Whalen, who spent time this year on the practice squad, has become one of Andrew Luck's favorite targets. Whalen has been targeted 20 times over the last three games, catching 15 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns.

According to ESPN.com, Whalen has a built-in advantage because he played with Luck in Stanford. Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton was their offensive coordinator at Stanford, "and he’s using the same passing plays he used while coaching them in college," the report said.

Hamilton told the website that "the quarterback-receiver dynamic is all about trust and the quarterback has to trust that the receiver is going to get to the spot and or beat man coverage."

The Colts host the Chiefs in a playoff game Saturday.

Colts pass catchers do little Week 17

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(12/29/2013) The Colts pass catchers didn't do much Week 17 against the Jaguars.

Griff Whalen was the only player to catch a touchdown, scoring on a 7 yard pass. He finished the game with 32 yards. Tight end Coby Fleener had just one reception for 25 yards. Da'Rick Rodgers caught two passes for 20 yards. Stanley Havili also caught two balls, but had 18 yards. Weslye Saunders had 18 yards, but caught one ball. LaVon Brazill caught one bal for 11 yards. Tight end Jack Doyle had one caught for 2 yards.

Tashard Choice also had one catch for 5 yards. He also carried the ball five times for 18 yards.

Griff Whalen leads Colts in receiving yards

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(12/22/2013) It was less than a month ago when the Colts released Griff Whalen to make room at another position. He's since re-established himself as more than just a part-time receiver. Whalen worked often at Kansas City in Week 16, leading the team with seven catches on eight targets for 80 yards.

Whalen was used mainly in the slot, running lots of curl, crossing and out routes.

"He's a guy that is a tireless worker; he is accountable," coach Chuck Pagano said. "There's obviously a trust factor with the quarterback, going back to their college days. He's one of those guys we've had up, back down, then back up again; he works at his craft. He practices extremely hard, probably harder than he plays the game. It's not a surprise to see Griff making the plays that he makes because we see it all the time in practice. He did a phenomenal job for the second week in a row, he got first downs for us, made some clutch catches, made guys miss in the open field, got yards after contact, so he did a great job."

It's a dimension the Colts offense could continue to use not just next week against the Jaguars in Week 17 but also in the playoffs.

Griff Whalen makes impact in return

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(12/15/2013) Colts wide receiver Griff Whalen, back on the active roster after being waived in mid-November, was a surprise contributor Week 15 against the Texans. Working out of the slot, he was targeted five times, catching four passes for 45 yards, second-most on the team. He also scored his first career touchdown on a 14-yard strike from quarterback Andrew Luck in the first quarter.

Whalen was filling in for LaVon Brazill, who was out with a bruised right foot after making an impact of his own with two touchdown catches last week. He'll look to remain involved Week 16 at Kansas City.

Colts add Griff Whalen to active roster

(12/14/2013) The Colts added wide receiver Griff Whalen to the active roster Saturday. Defensive back Jalil Brown was waived to make room on the roster.

Five Colts players contribute during Week 10 loss

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/10/2013) Colts fullback Stanley Havili, running back Dan Herron, wide receiver Griff Whalen, wide receiver LaVon Brazill and wide receiver David Reed all made it onto the stat sheet during a 38-8 loss Week 10 vs. St. Louis.

Havili had one carry for 1 yard, while adding three catches for 25 yards.

Herron had one carry for no gain and one catch for 57 yards. In fact, Herron almost scored on his 57-yard catch-and-run, but he was pulled down at the 3-yard line late in the fourth quarter.

Whalen had three catches for 36 yards. His longest catch went 25 yards and he was targeted five times.

Brazill had one catch for 11 yards, despite five targets. Brazill was targeted multiple times in the end zone. He was targeted on a 53-yard pass from Andrew Luck in the first half, but the pass was too far in front of Brazill in the end zone. Brazill was targeted three times by quarterback Matt Hasselbeck when the Colts got down to the Rams' 3-yard line. The last target near the goal line, however, was intercepted.

Reed initially had a 4-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, but the play was reversed to a 2-yard catch after it was ruled Reed stepped out of bounds before scoring.

The Colts are back in action Week 11 at Tennessee.

Griff Whalen targeted nine times

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(11/4/2013) Colts receiver Griff Whalen saw a lot of playing time in the slot Week 9. He was targeted nine times, second on the team.

Whalen finished with three catches for 32 yards. That doesn't sound like much, but Whalen entered the game with two catches on the season. One of his grabs Sunday night converted 3rd-and-10 for a 17-yard gain on Indy's winning drive.

Whalen faces the Rams in Week 10.

Satele (elbow) and Jean Francois (groin) are both dealing with injuries. The rest are all healthy scratches.

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(9/15/2013) Colts wide receiver Griff Whalen hauled in his first two receptions Sunday, in a 24-20 loss to the Dolphins in Week 2.

Whalen was targeted three times and was able to bring in two receptions for 28 yards. He had a long catch of 22 yards.

Whalen could see a bigger role moving forward if Darrius Heyward-Bey is forced to sit out Week 3 against the 49ers.
