Matt Simms likely to stick on roster

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(8/27/2014) Jets quarterback coach David Lee offered high praise of third-string quarterback Matt Simms, an indication the team likely will keep three quarterbacks, reports ESPN.com. "Matt Simms has improved as much as any guy I think I can ever remember coaching," Lee said.

Simms will get the bulk of the playing time in Thursday's preseason finale against the Eagles.

Jets studs and duds from offseason work

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/20/2014) The Jets have finished up their minicamp and are off until training camp. With that in mind, the Newark Star-Ledger broke down some studs and duds from all the offseason work.

The studs include receivers Stephen Hill and David Nelson, offensive lineman Oday Aboushi, cornerback Dexter McDougle and safety Calvin Pryor .

The duds were quarterbacks Michael Vick and Matt Simms and offensive lineman Willie Colon.

Report: Jets re-sign Matt Simms

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1/13/2014) Jets backup quarterback Matt Simms has signed a one-year deal to stay with the team, reports NorthJersey.com. He appeared in three games behind starter Geno Smith, completing 16 of 31 throws for 156 yards and a touchdown with one interception.

Matt Simms flops in relief performance

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12/1/2013) Given the chance to step into the quarterback role for the second half of Sunday's 23-3 loss to the Dolphins in Week 13, Jets backup Matt Simms didn't exactly impress. Simms completed just half of his passes and led the team on a single scoring drive in the loss.

Simms came out of the locker room as the quarterback at the start of the second half with the Jets down 6-0, after Geno Smith completed just 4 of 10 passes with an interception. Simms wasn't much better himself, completing 9 of 18 passes for 79 yards and a pick of his own.

Simms obviously has a chance to start in Week 14 against the Raiders, but coach Rex Ryan was not ready to name a starter after the game. A decision will be made at some point during the week.

Matt Simms plays well in blowout loss Week 11

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/17/2013) Jets backup quarterback Matt Simms received some mop-up duty during a 37-14 loss Week 11 at Buffalo. Simms entered the game in the fourth quarter after starter Geno Smith turned the ball over four times (three interceptions).

Simms got off to a great start, completing 3 of 3 passes for 48 yards on his first drive, which ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Cumberland.

Simms came close to a few other touchdowns passes, targeting Stephen Hill on 5- and 11-yard touchdown passes and David Nelson on a 17-yard touchdown pass, but all three attempts fell incomplete. Simms finished 4 of 6 for 60 yards.

After the game, coach Rex Ryan announced Smith would remain the starting quarterback heading into Week 12 at Baltimore.

Several do little for Jets in defeat to Bengals

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/27/2013) When your backup quarterback is your leading rusher, you know you've had a bad game. But that was the sad reality for the Jets in Cincinnati on Sunday, when Matt Simms paced the team with 35 yards on three attempts. Simms was 3 of 7 passing for 17 yards.

Simms was one of several meager contributors in the 49-9 loss. Among the others was running back Alex Green, who added 20 yards on three carries and one reception for 7 yards.

Also catching passes were tight ends Zach Sudfeld (2-10) and Jeff Cumberland (1-9). Sudfeld was a surprise co-starter at that position.

Jets have plenty of healthy players

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(9/8/2013) The Jets have the following players active and available for Week 1 at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The following players were all listed as probable coming into the game: LB Nick Bellore (Oblique); DB Antonio Cromartie (hip); DL Leger Douzable (illness); WR Clyde Gates (shoulder); DL Damon Harrison (knee); DB Ellis Lankster (foot, hamstring); DB Dee Milliner (Achilles); QB Matt Simms (calf, oblique); T Willie Colon (knee, shoulder); G Vladimir Ducasse (calf); G Brian Winters (ankle).

Jets release lengthy injury list

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(9/6/2013) The Jets have released an expansive Week 1 injury report. Those listed are as follows:

Out: Defensive end Quinton Coples (ankle), quarterback Mark Sanchez (shoulder).

Questionable: Defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis (back), wide receiver Santonio Holmes (foot).

Probable: Linebacker Nick Bellore (oblique), offensive lineman Willie Colon (knee/shoulder), cornerback Antonio Cromartie (hip), defensive tackle Leger Douzable (illness), offensive lineman Vladimir Ducasse (calf), wide receiver Clyde Gates (shoulder), linebacker David Harris (hip), wide receiver Stephen Hill (knee), tackle Ben Ijalana (knee), wide receiver Jeremy Kerley (finger), cornerback Ellis Lankster (foot/hamstring), cornerback Dee Milliner (Achilles), quarterback Matt Simms (calf/oblique), quarterback Geno Smith (ankle), tight end Kellen Winslow (knee) and offensive lineman Brian Winters (ankle).

Greg McElroy out, Matt Simms in for Jets

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(8/31/2013) The Jets released quarterback Greg McElroy Saturday, ESPN reports. That paves the way for Matt Simms to make the 53-man roster behind Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith at quarterback.

McElroy played in two games last season for the Jets behind Sanchez and Tim Tebow. He went 19 for 31 for 214 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Simms went 33 for 44 for 285 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the last preseason game against the Eagles.

Matt Simms fined, but fine after fine performance

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:57 pm ET) There has been some bad mixed in with the good for Jets quarterback Matt Simms. After completing 33 of 44 passes for 285 yards in a 27-20 win over Philadelphia, he has been fined $7.875 by the league for unsportsmanlike conduct.

That, however, can hardly dim the optimism for Simms after he stated his case to be the third-string quarterback behind Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez (or the other way around). Simms told NewJersey.com after the game, "I love being a Jet and I hope to continue to be a Jet."

As was emphasized in the movie West Side Story, when you're a Jet you're a Jet all the way.

Fourth-stringer Matt Simms set to start preseason finale

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8/28/2013) The scrambled Jets' quarterback situation in New York got a bit of clarity at least for this week when Rex Ryan announced that Matt Simms will start the final preseason game Thursday night against the Eagles, reports the New York Post. The team lists Simms as the fourth quarterback on its depth chart.

The poor performance by anticipated starter Geno Smith against the Giants, as well as injuries to Mark Sanchez (shoulder) and Greg McElroy (knee) motivated the Jets to sign quarterback Graham Harrell, who had just been given his release by the Packers.

Smith will not play against the Eagles. Sanchez has been deemed "day to day" by the team, but it is feared he could miss more significant time.

Rex Ryan won't name Thursday starter

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(8/27/2013) Jets coach Rex Ryan wouldn't say Tuesday who will start Thursday's preseason finale against the Eagles, according to the New York Daily News. With Mark Sanchez sidelined with a shoulder injury, the options are rookie Geno Smith, Greg McElroy or Matt Simms.

Simms among Jets' cuts

by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com
(8/31/2012) The Jets continued trimming their roster in preparation for the regular season and released quarterback Matt Simms on Friday. Simms, a rookie out of Tennessee, made his preseason debut Thursday at Philadelphia and connected on 3 of his 6 passes for just nine yards.
