Zach Mettenberger making most of opportunity

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(11/23/2014) With a 43-24 loss to the Eagles Week 12 at Philadelphia, Titans rookie quarterback Zach Mettenberger is now 0-4 as an NFL starter. But judging by his numbers, playing from behind seems to suit him just fine.

He has thrown for multiple scores and at least 250 yards in three of those four starts, finishing with a career-high 345 yards in this one. He completed just 20 of 39 passes, but thanks to some big plays by tight end Delanie Walker and wide receiver Justin Hunter, he was still plenty productive.

And it's not like he's been depending on them all this time. Walker was inactive for Week 11 because of a concussion, and Hunter averaged just 32.0 yards in Mettenberger's first three starts. For a rookie, he does a fine job of spreading the ball around.

Of course, he doesn't have much of a supporting cast and still has to answer for that one ugly performance Week 10 at Baltimore. At a deep position, three solid games out of four probably doesn't move the needle in Fantasy. But in two-quarterback leagues, Mettenberger is looking like a sneaky pickup right now.

Titans QB Zach Mettenberger cracks 300-yard mark for first time

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/23/2014) Titans quarterback Zach Mettenberger surpassed the 300-yard threshold for the first time in his career in his team's 43-24 defeat to the Titans in Week 12.

Mettenberger hooked up with Justin Hunter for a 40-yard touchdown in the first quarter, followed by a 6-yard touchdown strike to Dexter McCluster in the fourth quarter. He compiled 345 yards through the air while completing 20 of 39 pass attempts. He added two touchdowns, one interception and finished with an 88.1 passer rating.

Mettenberger will look to get back on track in Week 13 against Houston.

Zach Mettenberger bounces back from early pick-six

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(11/18/2014) Titans quarterback Zach Mettenberger's first pass Monday night was supposed to be a simple out route. The rookie threw behind wideout Justin Hunter, and Steelers cornerback William Gay intercepted and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown.

Mettenberger bounced back, however, completing 12 of his next 18 throws for 241 yards and two touchdowns. He finished 15 of 24 for 263 yards, posting a 110.0 rating.

Mettenberger hooked up with Nate Washington for an 80-yard touchdown shortly before halftime and hit tight end Chase Coffman for a 4-yard score in the third quarter. But he was unable to lead a scoring drive in the fourth quarter.

Mettenberger visits the Eagles in Week 12.

Zach Mettenberger struggles in second half during Week 10 loss

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/9/2014) Quarterback Zach Mettenberger is still searching for his first career win after the Titans lost 21-7 in his second career start Week 10 at Baltimore. The rookie quarterback completed 16 of 27 passes for 179 yards, one touchdown and one interception Sunday.

Mettenberger gave Tennessee the early lead as he found running back Leon Washington for a 3-yard score on a shovel pass with 20 seconds left in the first quarter.

He had 138 passing yards by halftime, but struggled to move the football in the second half and had just 41 passing yards after halftime.

The Titans are back in action Week 11 vs. Pittsburgh.

Zach Mettenberger faces tough matchup in Week 10

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11/7/2014) Titans quarterback Zach Mettenberger put up a solid Fantasy performance in his first career start, but faces a tough test in his second, Week 10 against the Ravens.

The Ravens were picked apart by Ben Roethlisberger last week, but that was the first time a quarterback had picked up more than 22 Fantasy points against them all season. Entering the Steelers game, the Ravens were allowing just 16.9 Fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks, which doesn't bode well for Mettenberger.

Mettenberger was hit or sacked on just three of his 43 dropbacks in his first start, a number the Ravens are likely to beat, as they rank 14th in the league in sacks through eight games. If they can get more pressure on Mettenberger, he could be in for a long day.

In two quarterback leagues, Mettenberger might be worth a look, but there are probably better options available otherwise.

Zach Mettenberger racks up some garbage-time points

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10/26/2014) The Titans asked a lot of rookie quarterback Zach Mettenberger in his first NFL start, and he acquitted himself fairly well in a 30-16 loss to the Texans in Week 8.

The Titans tried to hide Mettenberger in the first half, when he attempted just 13 passes and was intercepted once. Playing from behind in the second half, however, Mettenberger looked solid, completing 20 of 28 passes for 237 passes and two touchdowns, while getting little help from the running game.

The Titans were down big early, with Mettenberger's first score coming with a 24-point deficit at his back. Still, he managed to avoid being a disaster, which is as much as you can ask from a third-string quarterback with a sixth-round draft history.

Fantasy owners will obviously need to see more from Mettenberger before even considering adding him, but this was a decent enough start to his pro career.

Titans QB Zach Mettenberger has decent outing in first career start

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/26/2014) Although he didn't win Sunday, Titans rookie quarterback Zach Mettenberger didn't have a bad performance in his first career start during a 30-16 loss Week 8 vs. Houston. Mettenberger completed 27 of 41 passes for 299 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also lost a fumble.

Mettenberger didn't hit his stride Sunday until the second half. He completed just 7 of 13 passes for 62 yards and one interception in the first half, which resulted in a 34.8 quarterback rating.

His first career passing touchdown was a 6-yard completion to Delanie Walker late in the third quarter. His second touchdown pass went 12 yards to Justin Hunter late in the fourth quarter.

"I thought he did a nice job in the second half ... being able to move the ball was encouraging," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "He stood in the pocket at times, hung in there and made some throws."

The Titans are on a bye Week 9 before returning to action Week 10 at Baltimore.

"As I settled down, I was able to let it rip and complete some passes," Mettenberger said. "We showed in the second half we could do it. We have the right guys to get it done. This is my first game starting. There's a lot of things I can improve on and will improve on."

Jake Locker improving, but coach not ready to name him Week 8 starter

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/22/2014) Titans quarterback Jake Locker was limited in practice Wednesday as he works his way back from a thumb injury, which has kept him out the last two games. Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Locker is improving, but he isn't ready to declare him the starter for Sunday's game against the Texans.

Locker was not available to the media on a Wednesday for the first time this season, per The Tennessean.

"I figured we'd have a little more clarity tomorrow after (Jake) practicing today, so that's why (Jake wasn't available). Does that make sense?,'' Whisenhunt said. "He did pretty much everything. He was limited because I don't want it to flare up tomorrow and be an issue. But he did a lot today. He did a good part of practice."

Titans QB Jake Locker scheduled to throw Tuesday

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(10/20/2014) Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt said during Monday's press conference that quarterback Jake Locker is scheduled to throw on Tuesday, according to the Tennessean. His status for Week 8 against the Texans could depend on how his right hand feels after throwing. After Sunday's loss, Whisenhunt said soreness kept Locker from making his return against Washington and that he expects him to return this week.

"Locker is still our guy. Nothing has changed from the quarterback perspective," Whisenhunt said, per ESPN.

Titans QB Charlie Whitehurst throws for two TDs in Week 7 loss

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/19/2014) Titans quarterback Charlie Whitehurst threw a pair of touchdowns Sunday, but it wasn't enough in a 19-17 loss Week 7 at Washington. Whitehurst completed 17 of 26 passes for 160 yards and one interception, while rushing for 10 yards.

Whitehurst threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Kendall Wright with 1:04 left in the second quarter to give Tennessee a 10-6 lead. He then threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Derek Hagan with 7:41 left to put Tennessee ahead 17-16.

Whitehurst was making his third start this season in place of Jake Locker, who missed a second straight game Sunday due to a thumb injury. However, coach Ken Whisenhunt said after Sunday's loss he expects Locker to make his return Week 8 against the Texans.

Jake Locker can't catch a break

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/5/2014) After missing Week 4 with an injury to his right wrist, Titans quarterback Jake Locker got off to a great start Week 5 against Cleveland, looking much like the player who got so much attention on the waiver wire after Week 1 with two touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground. But as has been so common throughout his career, an injury ended his day early. He spent the entire second half on the sidelines, his throwing hand heavily wrapped after he smacked it on a defender's helmet with about five minutes to go in the second quarter.

Whether or not this injury sidelines him for the next several weeks, it's another reminder not to put too much stock into Locker as a sleeper. His particular style of play (he's always been the scrambling sort) seems to invite injury while also stunting his development, which contributed to his performance in Weeks 2 and 3. What results is an inconsistent passer who you can't trust to make it through four quarters.

Locker was almost knocked out earlier in the game when he took a blow to the head after crossing the goal line on his 11-yard touchdown run. You're playing with fire every time you use him. So next time you feel the urge because of his matchups or whatever else, stop and ask yourself if you're being too cute.

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/5/2014) Titans backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst exploded early upon his forced entry into the game Sunday against Cleveland before showing why he is a backup quarterback.

Whitehurst hit Kendall Wright on an 11-yard scoring strike with his second pass, then tossed a perfect 75-yard heave to a wide-open to Justin Hunter on the next possession for another touchdown. He finished the first half 2 of 3 for 86 yards.

After intermission, however, Whitehurst and the Titans were blanked. He completed 11 of 18 for 108 yards in the second half.

Whitehurst will likely start next Sunday against Jacksonville if starter Jake Locker remains sidelined.
