49ers defense bounces back, still takes the loss

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12/14/2014) The 49ers defense held up their end of the bargain, but didn't get much help in a 17-7 loss to the Seahawks in Week 15.

The 49ers held the Seahawks to just 290 yards of total offense in the game, including just 138 through the air. They also did a good job pressuring Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, who was sacked five times and intercepted once.

The 49ers DST unit had failed to get to double digits in Fantasy scoring in each of their previous two games, before getting their Sunday. They will look to do so again in Week 16, with the Chargers on the schedule.

49ers DST comes away with five picks in Week 11

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11/17/2014) The 49ers DST unit took advantage of Eli Manning's struggles in Week 11, in a 16-10 win.

The 49ers defense limited the Giants to just 330 yards of total offense, and came up with a huge number of big plays in the win. The 49ers forced five turnovers, as they intercepted Eli Manning five times and sacked him twice in the win, as the Giants offense failed to get anything consistent going.

The 49ers DST unit is riding a three-game streak with at least 10 Fantasy points, and they will look to keep it up in Week 12 against the Redskins.

49ers DST holds Chiefs in check

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10/6/2014) The 49ers defense held an opponent under 20 points for the first time since the season opener in Week 5, a 22-17 win over the Chiefs.

The 49ers held the Chiefs to just 265 yards of total offense on 50 plays, though the Chiefs did score on both of their red zone trips. San Francisco forced one turnover in the game, and failed to record a single sack of quarterback Alex Smith.

The 49ers DST got the job done Sunday without the benefit of big plays. They will look to keep rolling in Week 6, with a matchup against the Rams on the way Monday.

49ers allow 17 second-half points in Week 3 loss

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(9/21/2014) The 49ers defense allowed 17 second-half points Sunday, and the Cardinals stormed back for a 23-14 win Week 3. Arizona finished with 338 yards, which included 84 rushing yards.

San Francisco held Arizona to a pair of first-half field goals before rookie wide receiver John Brown had touchdown catches of 21 and 24 yards in the third quarter to put Arizona ahead.

The 49ers did force a fumble of wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald in the red zone in the fourth quarter. However, they recorded no sacks and no interceptions in the loss.

San Francisco is back in action Week 4 vs. Philadelphia.

San Francisco DST has a field day with Tony Romo

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(9/7/2014) The 49ers DST had a field day with Tony Romo and the Cowboys Week 1.

San Francisco wasted no time picking up points. On the Cowboys first drive of the game, the 49ers forced a fumble and ran it back for a touchdown. They nearly scored again on Dallas' third drive. Tony Romo threw an interception to Eric Reid. Reid nearly brought it back all the way, but was taken down at the 2-yard line.

The team more than made up for that miss over the course of the game. San Francisco managed to pick off Romo two more times. They also picked up three sacks.

While the performance was mostly dominant, the 49ers proved to be somewhat vulnerable in the run game. DeMarco Murray managed 118 yards on 22 carries.

The 49ers DST will take on the Bears Week 2.

49ers DST to be tested Week 1

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(9/4/2014) The 49ers DST will get a big test Week 1 against the Cowboys.

San Francisco is dealing with some big losses on defense heading into the season. Glenn Dorsey and NaVorro Bowman are both sidelined with injuries, Aldon Smith is currently suspended and the team lost three members of the secondary during free agency. While the unit has been strong in the past, that’s a lot to overcome.

It doesn’t help that the club is taking on the Cowboys Week 1. Because Dallas’ defense was so bad last season, the offense had to compensate by getting into shootouts each week. They were successful, as Fantasy defenses averaged 5.06 Fantasy points per game when facing the Cowboys. That was the second lowest figure in the league.

More of the same is expected from Dallas this season, which means the 49ers could have their hands full Week 1. It’s tough to carry two defenses early in the year, but there’s just too much going on here to recommend San Francisco as a strong Fantasy start.

49ers surrenders costly touchdown late in title game

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1/19/2014) The 49ers gave up a costly fourth quarter touchdown, which proved to be the difference in Sunday's NFC Championship game against the Seahawks in Seattle.

With the Niners up 17-13, Aldon Smith jumped offside on a 4th-and-7, which gave Seattle a free play, and Russell Wilson hooked up with Jermaine Kearse, who made a leaping catch over Carlos Rogers in the end zone with 13:52 remaining in the game. The defense also had a tough time keeping Marshawn Lynch in check, who gashed San Francisco's defense for 109 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.

The defense recovered a fumble, forced four sacks but allowed 308 yards of total offense in a 23-17 defeat. The 49ers also received bad news, as left guard Mike Iupati suffered a broken ankle and NaVorro Bowman torn his ACL in his left knee, according to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.

San Francisco DST limits Panthers to 10 points

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(1/12/2014) The 49ers DST did a great job against Carolina.

San Francisco allowed the Panthers to score just 10 points. The team was able to disrupt Cam Newton, sacking him five times. They also forced Newton to throw two interceptions, including one that basically sealed the game. The 49ers will have their hands full next week against Seattle.

LaMichael James providing spark in return game

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1/8/2014) 49ers running back LaMichael James didn't get a carry in the playoff win at Green Bay, but he made an impact as a returner. James returned three kickoffs for 78 yards, including a critical 37-yarder, and returned two punts for 20 yards.

"A very admirable job," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "A blue-collar effort on his part. Catching the balls in the elements and the wind and the factors that were there. I thought he did a great job and was able to set up a 37-yard kickoff return to help us answer the scoring drive of the Packers. He was rock solid.”

49ers DST brings heavy pass rush

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1/5/2014) The 49ers sacked Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers four times in their 23-20 playoff win, including two by linebacker Ahmad Brooks and 1 1/2 by linebacker Aldon Smith. It was the most Rodgers had been sacked all season.

San Francisco held Green Bay to 6 yards in the first quarter, 281 overall. But the 49ers DST failed to force a turnover. The unit will look to be more disruptive in next Sunday's playoff game at Carolina.

49ers becomes first unit to prevent 100-yard rusher

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/29/2013) The 49ers turned in a solid performance as they became the first defensive unit to not allow a 100-yard rusher in a game this season, during Sunday's 23-20 victory over the Cardinals in Week 17.

San Francisco limited Rashard Mendenhall to 40 yards and Andre Ellington to only 30 yards on the ground. However, the 49ers did allow Carson Palmer to pass for 407 yards in the win. The defense recorded one interception and one sack and allowed 482 yards of total offense.

The 49ers will travel to Green Bay for a showdown against the Packers in the opening round of the playoffs.

49ers DST scores late

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12/24/2013) The 49ers DST buckled down when it mattered the most. With Atlanta threatening to tie or pull ahead with just over a minute left, linebacker NaVorro Bowman intercepted a deflected Matt Ryan pass and returned it 89 yards for the clinching touchdown.

On the play, cornerback Tramaine Brock blanketed receiver Harry Douglas and knocked the ball up in the air. Brock got his own interception on the game's final play, snagging a Hail Mary in the end zone.

San Francisco finished with those two interceptions and got a sack from defensive tackle Justin Smith. Thus the 49ers came through for Fantasy owners despite giving up 402 yards.

The 49ers DST visits Arizona in Week 17.

49ers DST could enjoy feeding frenzy on MNF

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12/18/2013) The 49ers DST enters Week 16 as Fantasy's No. 6 unit, having averaged 16.8 Fantasy points over the past four weeks. San Francisco ranks third in points allowed (16.3) and total defense (299.1). The team is tied for seventh with 10 fumble recoveries and tied for 10th with 15 interceptions.

Monday night the 49ers face the Falcons, who rank in the middle of the pack in Fantasy points allowed to DSTs. Playing at home on a national stage, in what could be the final game at Candlestick Park, San Francisco will ride an emotional surge.

All three CBSSports.com senior Fantasy experts rate the 49ers DST a top-3 play.

49ers defense dominant in Week 15 win

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12/15/2013) The 49ers defense had a good showing during a 33-14 win Week 15 at Tampa Bay. San Francisco held Tampa Bay to less than 200 total yards (183), which included just 39 rushing yards.

The Bucs didn't get on the scoreboard until Vincent Jackson's 11-yard touchdown catch with 29 seconds left in the second quarter. Tampa Bay's only other touchdown came on a 24-yard touchdown catch by Timothy Wright in the fourth quarter.

The 49ers special teams also got a nice assist from the Bucs. Eric Page tried to get cute on a kickoff return in the fourth quarter by handing the football off to Russell Shepard on a reverse. Shepard lost the ball as he slipped to the ground, which allowed Kendall Hunter to scoop up the football for a 2-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

The 49ers forced an interception late in the fourth quarter and finished with four sacks. San Francisco is back in action Week 16 vs. Atlanta.

Continue to lean on 49ers DST Week 15

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12/11/2013) The 49ers had one of their best defensive efforts when they needed it the most Week 14 vs. Seattle, holding the Seahawks to 17 points and 264 yards in a key NFC West showdown. The 49ers will look to bring the same intensity to the field Week 15 at Tampa Bay.

DSTs have scored well against the Bucs, so that bodes well for Fantasy owners who have the 49ers DST. DSTs average 10.8 Fantasy points per week against Tampa Bay, which is the eighth-highest average. DSTs have scored less than 10 points just four times this season against Tampa Bay.

It's no surprise the 49ers have been one of the highest-scoring DSTs in 2013. They haven't let down Fantasy owners and are probably one of the main reasons why you have made it this far in your league. You have been leaning on the 49ers DST all season and it's not time to stop Week 15.

49ers keep Russell Wilson in check in Week 14

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/8/2013) The 49ers enjoyed a solid performance defensively against the Seahawks in Week 14.

San Francisco forced two sacks on Russell Wilson and picked him off once. Eric Wright came down with the interception for the team's only turnover of the day. The 49ers allowed 264 yards of total offense in a 19-17 victory.

The 49ers will look to keep rolling in Week 15 against the Buccaneers.

49ers may have hands full at home vs. Seattle

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/7/2013) The 49ers may have their hands full in a pivotal macthup at home against the Seahawks in Week 14.

The last time these two teams faced each other, San Francisco's defense fell apart and allowed 98 yards on the ground to Marshawn Lynch. Lynch scored two rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown In fact, the 49ers have been outscored 71-16 over the previous two meetings.

Still, the Niners have allowed 105.5 yards per game on the ground, which ranks 11th, and 206.2 yards per game through the air, which is the third fewest allowed in the league. Opposing DST units have scored only 6.00 Fantasy points per game this season. Fantasy owners may want to think twice before starting the 49ers DST this week. Consider them a low-end starting option for Week 14.

49ers DST stays sharp in win over St. Louis

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/1/2013) The 49ers enjoyed another dominant performance during Sunday's win over the Rams in Week 13.

San Francisco limited Kellen Clemens to 218 yards passing with one touchdown and one interception. That interception came late in the fourth quarter when Carlos Rogers picked off Clemens to seal the game for San Francisco. Clemens was sacked three and the defense only allowed 312 yards of total offense in a 23-13 victory.

The 49ers will look to keep rolling in a difficult matchup at home against the Seahawks in Week 13.

49ers in line for another monster performance

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/30/2013) The 49ers could be in line for another monster performance during Week 13 against the Rams.

San Francisco allowed only 190 yards of total offense against the Redskins in Week 12. The Niners allowed only 11 points and 188 yards of total offense in their previous meeting against the Rams in St. Louis in Week 4. DSTs against the Rams have scored 8.55 Fantasy points per game this season.

Our Fantasy experts have all ranked the 49ers in the Top 5 this week. Consider them a must-start option in all formats for Week 13.

49ers defense stays dominant in Washington

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/26/2013) The 49ers suffocated Robert Griffin III and kept the Redskins in check in a Week 12 win on Monday night.

San Francisco held Griffin to a season-low 127 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Donte Whitner picked off Robert Griffin III on the final play of the opening quarter. The 49ers sacked him four times and limited Washington to 190 yards of total offense in a 27-6 victory.

San Francisco will host St. Louis in Week 13.

49ers DST an elite option Week 12

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(11/21/2013) The 49ers DST averaged 17.5 points over a six-game stretch until hitting a speed bump Week 11. You can forgive the 49ers DST for that, as the unit faced Drew Brees in the Superdome.

San Francisco still ranks fourth in scoring defense (17.8), seventh in total defense (323.8), tied for fourth in fumble recoveries (9) and tied for 13th in interceptions (11). The 49ers DST has scored three touchdowns in its past six games.

In Week 12 San Francisco visits Washington for Monday Night Football. The Redskins' mistake-prone offense gives up the ninth-most Fantasy points to opposing DSTs, 11.0 per game. Consider the 49ers DST a top-5 option.

Niners DST a dud in loss to New Orleans

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11/17/2013) It's usually a good idea to play the 49ers DST in Fantasy leagues. But not Sunday in New Orleans.

The Saints did enough to keep the points down for that unit. They scored 23 points, totaled 387 yards, yielded just one turnover and kept the Niners down to one sack in their Sunday win.

Second-best not bad for 49ers DST on Sunday

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11/10/2013) The 49ers DST was not the best group on their own field Sunday, but they still performed well in a loss to Carolina. They held the Panthers to 10 points and 250 yards overall, recovered a fumble, picked off a pass and added four sacks.

Phil Dawson perfect in three field goal attempts on Sunday

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11/10/2013) Phil Dawson must have felt Sunday like he did for 13 years in Cleveland. He was the only 49ers player who scored in the loss to Carolina. Dawson drilled all three field goal attempts from 52, 43 and 25 yards. All of them came in the first 24 minutes of game action. He watched his offense founder the rest of the game.

49ers DST a must-play again in Week 10

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11/8/2013) Fantasy owners should not bother weighing options in regard to sticking the 49ers DST in their Week 10 lineups. Don't waste your time. Just do it.

Forget their overall statistics. The Niners defense struggled the first three weeks of the season, but have righted themselves. They have surrendered a meager average of 12.2 points a game in their last five and have racked up 13 turnovers during that stretch. And they are playing at home against Carolina. The Panthers boast one of the premier all-around running games in the NFL despite the lack of a featured back, but their passing attack is average at best.

The Niners run of five straight dominant performances came against some of the weak sisters of the league, especially on offense. But don't be fooled by that. Only those first three games have kept San Francisco from securing its rightful place near the top of the league in all defensive categories. Its DST is ranked sixth, seventh and ninth this week by the three CBSSports.com senior Fantasy writers for a reason.

Don't overanalyze this. Put the 49ers in your lineups and save that brain power for other lineup decisions.
