Texans QB Tom Savage all but set as backup for Sunday

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:39 am ET) Bill O'Brien is "leaning towards" choosing Texans rookie Tom Savage over newly acquired veteran Thad Lewis as the backup quarterback to Ryan Fitzpatrick for the Sunday game against Tennessee, the Houston Chronicle has reported.

"It's very difficult to ask Thaddeus to come in here and pick up on this offense in three days and be the No. 2 guy Sunday," O'Brien said. "Tom has improved a lot. I think this week has been his best week of throwing the ball. He definitely has a grasp of our offense."

The promotion has Savage smiling, but he's not getting complacent.

"Whether your're two or three, you're always preparing to be the guy at some point," he said. "Nothing really changes for me, just keep working and getting better."

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

O'Brien said he will have "more to report" on Mallett's status later in the week. O'Brien would not name a starting quarterback for Week 13 against the Titans. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tom Savage are the two other quarterbacks on the roster.

"I'm trying to get ready for Tennessee," O'Brien said. "Whether (Mallett is) there or not, the next guy's gonna step up, whoever it is."

(8/24/2014) Texans coach Bill O'Brien said rookie quarterback Tom Savage has "closed the gap" with No. 2 quarterback Case Keenum. Savage hit 5 of 6 passes for 68 yards and a touchdown against the Broncos on Saturday, while Keenum went 11 of 18 for 74 yards.

Bill O'Brien not ruling out change in QB rotation

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(8/10/2014) Texans coach Bill O'Brien did not rule out a change in the quarterback rotation when asked about it Sunday, reports Pro Football Talk. Starter Ryan Fitzpatrick went 6 of 14 for 55 yards with two interceptions in Saturday's 32-0 loss to Arizona, while backups Case Keenum and Tom Savage combined to go 5 of 8 for 43 yards.

"I think you’re always thinking about what you can do to make the team better," O’Brien said. "So any time you have a chance to review things and regroup a little bit on a day off like it is today, as a head coach, you’re always thinking about things that can make the team better, whether that’s a change in the depth chart, a change in a scheme, a change of a position of a player, whatever it may be. We’ll continue to discuss that today."

Case Keenum ahead of Tom Savage in battle of backups

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/27/2014) In the battle to back up Ryan Fitzpatrick, quarterback Case Keenum is getting more reps than rookie Tom Savage, reports the Houston Chronicle. Coach Bill O'Brien said Savage will get a legitimate shot.

"Tommy gets a lot of reps on his own because we do a two-spot drill (with two quarterbacks throwing at the same time to different receivers) early in practice," O'Brien said. “It balances itself out. We’ll take however many practices we need to determine who’s the backup quarterback. We’ll take our time with that."

Ryan Fitzpatrick named Texans starter

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/17/2014) Texans coach Bill O'Brien named Ryan Fitzpatrick the starting quarterback, the official team website reports Tuesday.

Fitzpatrick was expected to battle rookie Tom Savage for the job in training camp, but O'Brien has apparently seen enough to trust Fitzpatrick with the role now.

"He's a guy that earned the job," O'Brien said.

Savage will now compete with Case Keenum and T.J. Yates for the No. 2 job. O'Brien said "I don't know" when asked if he will carry two or three quarterbacks on the roster this season.

Texans continue to evaluate quarterbacks

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/16/2014) The Texans' quarterbacks -- all four of them between Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tom Savage, T.J. Yates and Case Keenum -- continue to be a work in progress, reports the Houston Chronicle.

Coach Bill O'Brien said that Fitzpatrick, the expected Week 1 starter, had a "decent offseason" and has done a good job of picking a new offense. But O'Brien said the quarterback competition is wide open.

"T.J. and Case ... they've also done a good job," O'Brien said. "Savage is a rookie. He's a little bit behind. But you can see he's got some tools. He can throw the football and he works extremely hard."

The backup position is expected to come down to Keenum and Yates. But O'Brien didn't rule out Savage for the spot.

"I don't know. We'll see. We'll let it play out a little bit," O'Brien said.

Texans could cut a quarterback

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/9/2014) The Texans may enter training camp with only three quarterbacks on the roster, coach Bill O’Brien said Monday per the Houston Chronicle.

Veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick is the Texans' expected Week 1 starter and signed a two-year, $7 million deal this offseason. Rookie Tom Savage was a fourth-round pick and is being groomed by O’Brien to eventually take over the position.

If the Texans trim their roster either T.J. Yates or Case Keenum is expected to be the odd man out.

Texans' quarterback job is 'wide open'

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5/28/2014) Four quarterbacks have a chance to start the Texans' season opener, reports the Houston ChronicleRyan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum, T.J. Yates and rookie Tom Savage are all in the running and the job is "wide open," coach Bill O'Brien said after the first day of OTAs.

"These guys are good guys, they’ve been fun to coach," O’Brien said. "(Quarterbacks coach) George Godsey’s done a great job with them. And I think they’ve enjoyed learning this offense and they’re competing. It looks like there’s good chemistry in the room, which is important in the quarterback room. I’ve been impressed with these guys, the way they work at it."

Texans select QB Tom Savage in Round 4

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

The 6-foot-4, 228-pound pocket passer has the strong arm that head coach Bill O'Brien wanted in the draft. He completed 61 percent of his passes for 2,958 yards with 21 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2013 for the Panthers.

Savage will join a group that has Case Keenum, Ryan Fitzpatrick and T.J. Yates currently at quarterback.
